Goodnight, sweet Saffy prince.

I'd argue that my rage over the Laffy Saffy-Meme Madness situation...
…was one of my finest moments on this site.

My dad tore his ACL and has never been the same.
Although he is not quite the athlete that Laffy Saffy is.

Depends
on the state of the leg prior to the injury, the extensiveness of the injury, the surgeon and the technique used, and the rate of recovery. Maclin (as Bill said) got back better than ever, and Domino (and Ebner?) recovered in record time. I don’t know how much the BB team spends with Rex Sharp (the football trainer) or if Dr. Pat Smith of COG is the team doctor.
I would say (in my professional opinion) that if Saffy get’s cut by Dr. Smith, say next Tuesday (need time for swelling to go down), AND if there’s no major cartilage tears, then Saffy could be back running in three-four months (summer). BUT, getting in Mike Anderson shape could take longer.

those are very good points can not agree more
I would like to add;
Stress on ligaments can be different for BB players vs FB especially BB players of his size
Is Saffy the type of body that handles the technique well?
Good Luck Saffy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good point
he’s got a few things going for him in that area:
1. He’s male (don’t laugh). Females, for multiple reasons, are 8 times more likely to tear an ACL, and have a 25% re-tear of the graft.
2. Grafts of ligaments (the ACL) come from tendons, which are much, much stronger. The American Journal of Orthopedics showed that a graft made from the Hamstring tendon (the muscle on the back of the thigh) is 250% stronger, and a patellar graft (taken from below the kneecap, which includes bone from the kneecap and the tibial tuberosity, the boney protrusion on the top of the shin) is about 100% stronger. Which is used is generally up to the operating surgeon. I’ve been told the recovery time for a hamstring graft is faster, but that a patellar graft can be inserted and attached easier.
That being said, Saffy is in good shape. If there is no other structural damage, he should be weight-baring in a few weeks. then the hard road to recovery begins.

That is sweet info.
So some Orthos don’t use a hamstring section due to…..?
Seems like it is a better (higher tensile strength) option than the patellar graft.
I guess this is interesting that some surgeon would go for the patellar graft because it is easier to attach, when the hamstring is stronger and faster recovery.
Oh, quick question. How bad is it to get the hamstring to recover? I suppose that might be a reason for not doing it.
Thanks for the info i didn’t understand that aspect. ( I work with mice only, so…don’t need to reconstruct anything on them!!)

PETA
that last statement was a joke. I take animal ethics courses once every two years.
It takes me and a DVM over a year to add any kind of procedure that we might need for research, to ensure safe and proper ethical/moral treatment of our furry little friends.
Fucking mice. (joke again)

I work with rats
just as temperamental, but bigger.
Hard to say why surgeon’s to one over the other. A lot, I think, has to do with training. Dr. Smith does pateller cause he’s always done it, and does it pretty well. Some of the folk at Mizzou Ortho do hamstring. Again, they both work. The figures for hamstring may be due to the “bundling” they do with the graft, but not entirely familiar with it.
Also, with the pateller graft, there’s two bone stumps involved. Therefore, those can be screwed into place (a hole is drilled for the graft). Don’t think the hamstring give you that.

At this point, I think the odds are great that he will be ready for next season.
Surgery, therapy and recovery are infinitely better now — with D1 athletics staff/trainers, anyway — than they used to be, and I expect him to be full-speed. The damage, of course, is to this year’s team.

Brandon Rush tore his ACL in summer league
And we won a title with him as our leading scorer the next year. Safford will be back, and if he takes the B-Rush route, will have rock-solid fundamentals to make up for his lack of ups till they get back.

Damn...
damn damn damn damn damn.
So, who will do the surgery? COG or Mizzou Ortho?

I would bet on COG.
There is a God and I'm not it, after that EVERYTHING is subjective. Be careful for what you wish for, you just might GET IT!
Too bad for Safford
Hopefully he will recover well and help lead our team to new heights next season.
Hard to say
Andrews gets involved in a lot of things, but ACL tears are pretty simple operations these days.

According to the STL Post Dispatch
Not necessarily out for the season?
Safford will miss Saturday’s showdown at No. 6 Kansas State, but that’s as far as Anderson would go with the story.
"We’ll reevaluate it in the next week and then we’ll make a determination of what’s going to take place," Anderson said today on WHB radio in Kansas City. "We know eventually he’s going to have to have surgery."
Interesting
This may point to no other structural damage. Still no word on the level of tear to the ACL. It’s worth pointing out that you don’t need an ACL to move about (I didn’t have one for five years). The possible plan may be to brace it for five days, allow the swelling to subside, then fit him with a knee brace for the remainder of the games.

A kid on my football team
Tore his ACl completely and continued playing in that game and the next, a week later in a brace. I think it has alot to do with HOW the tendon tore. I think, someone please correct me if Im wrong, that it is better for the ACL to be completely torn rather than partially torn. I think the fact he walked back to the bench without crutches could speak to how he’s feeling
by TheHamburglar on Feb 25, 2010 12:56 PM CST up reply actions
i can attest to the faxt that you can still move around without an ACL
But it suuuuuuuuuucks. I was able to finish the softball game I was in by being careful. But the next day it was stiff as all get out and painful for a while after that Especially in the week right after it happens. I waited about five or six months after I tore mine to get surgery (of the patellar variety) but didn’t run on it in that span of time. Now I’m not a D1 athlete so they may be more aggressive with Saffy. Though I can run and cut just as well as I did before the surgery. Maybe even more so. The big challenge will be for him to trust that knee again
by darklighter09 on Feb 25, 2010 1:56 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah he was a offensive tackle
They moved him to the other tackle spot so he wouldn’t be putting as much pressure on that particular leg. Doctor said he could still move/play cause it tore completely. To be fair, this doctor also said I was fine after a torn labrum, sooo that soured me on his judgement

During playoff runs
Diagnosis’ and recovery times seem to be a little more leniant, as seen with Dwight Freeny, hopefully they take the necessary time in this situation

This does suck...
but I have to point out that Missouri has been extraordinarily lucky when it comes to the injury bug (knock on wood), and if there is any program/system that can sustain its level of play despite injury its Missouri.
True
Mike doesn’t want that. He doesn’t need to go out and sign a bunch of McDonald’s All-Americans. He just needs to go find a few Burger King-type guys and he’ll get it done.

Maybe we'll get a glimpse
of what it’s like to finally have Bowers in the starting lineup, and see if he, steve Moore, and possibly Underwood(?) can fill those minutes at least as well as Saffy
Finally
a chance for Sutton to start at power forward.

Actually, that makes total sense.
We’ve won 100% of the games that Jarrett Sutton has played in.

This
Is like saying Notre Dame never lost while Rudy was playing.

This is coming together quite nicely.

We'll survive.
Safford is a good player, no doubt, but I think we’ll be fine with Bowers and Ramsey. My only concern is the lack of depth now once we get into tournament time.
"Missouri is not a good passing team. It's a great passing team."
I'm not sure either of them are really ready though...
I’m guessing Moore will start getting a LOT more minutes and both Stone and Underwood will split the time that Moore has now.
"Missouri is not a good passing team. It's a great passing team."
Off-topic, but...
Jason King has called us a bubble team.
"Missouri is not a good passing team. It's a great passing team."
Why is Texas Tech above us?
We obviously have more wins in conference play and overall… Feeling he’s a bit too much onto Pat Knights jockstrap, eh?
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
Tech is 8th and we're 5th.
I think you mean he has A&M ahead of us, which I think is for good reason (not meaning just the head-to-head meeting). I’d order everything in the top 6 as:
Kansas
Kansas State
Agriculture and Machinery
Missouri
Baylor
Texas
"Missouri is not a good passing team. It's a great passing team."
Ah, my bad...
Too much Texas in the Big 12 for me =(. But why are we a bubble team according to him? I saw on some ESPN articles that we were a lock to get in..
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
We ARE a lock to get in. King is an idiot.
We’re going to have 10 possible 11 or 12 regular season Big 12 wins as well as probably a win or two in the Big 12 tourny after a first-round bye. At best we could get a 4 or 5 seed and at worst we might be a 9 or 10 seed, if the season ended today we’d likely be a 7 seed.
"Missouri is not a good passing team. It's a great passing team."
Thats what I thought...
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
Never mind the fact that he, too, listed Mizzou as in 5th place
even though they have a 9-4 record.
Which, last time I checked, was better than 8-5.
Although I did get the ESPN blogger to fix his post from this morning that contained the same error. I sent him a heads up via Twitter.
"Put. That coffee. Down. Coffee is for closers." ~ Blake (Alec Baldwin), Glengarry Glen Ross
You really think it's for good reason?
Looking at A&M’s results, I’m not really sure where they beat us out except in the head-to-head. Victories over Clemson and Minnesota at a neutral site in non-con, and then in conference they split with Baylor, lost their away game to Texas and lost to both Kansas and K-State. I don’t know if I could make the argument that Missouri is better than them after they beat us at home, but I don’t think their resume is much better than ours.

Even still
I think this may sum up the national view of where Mizzou stands. If we finish strong and win at least 2 games in the NCAA tourney, that’d be a nice one finger salute to the national media. Similar along the lines of last years team. Maybe then people, and by people I mean everyone over at ESPN and Dick Vitale, will start to recognize Mizzou as a legit team, and not a one season “fluke”, if you will

i wouldn't bet on it.
seems to me like the only team west of acc country they like is always michigan state. kansass if they have time to go “in depth”.

I kind of like being under the radar.
I vividly remember hearing Tony Kornheiser on PTI before the Memphis game last season saying that Missouri “had about a 2% chance of winning the ball game” and that “the way the teams run up and down the court will work in Memphis’s favor.”
"Missouri is not a good passing team. It's a great passing team."
hahahhahah......
oops………..so how’d that one work out? Gimme a second to remember.
