i was really hoping

that our shooting was just the result of some bad games. but four games in a row is disconcerting. i really feel that if we shoot like we can our ceiling is the sweet 16. shooting like this, its one and done…

i understand that teams have slumps

but we just havent seemed to find a rhythm or focus since the colorado game. maybe its losing safford. maybe playing steeeeeeeeeeve is throwing off the chemistry. maybe we’re pressing. but we cant be shooting this bad this late in the season. its a death sentence

by darklighter09 on Mar 10, 2010 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I really hope they haven’t peaked at the wrong time. Maybe this game will wake them up. That said, I usually don’t worry about this team if they’re within 10 at the half.

Edmonds hit 42 bombs in 2004

Holliday will not hit .301/.418/.643 to begin with……and then Edmonds also played GG defense in CF. Somehow Edmonds got really underrated in his time in STL. He was a MONSTER till 2006.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Mar 10, 2010 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

2010 holliday > 2004 rolen

or at least, 2004 rolen won’t be “far and away” better than 2010 holliday.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 10, 2010 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

Rolen was even better than Edmonds that year!

Holliday also won’t hit .314 .409 .598……and then Rolen played some of the best defense at 3B in history.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Mar 10, 2010 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

yeah...i just looked up the stats for rolen

god were those three insane. i guess there’s reason we won 105 games that year…

that said, holliday might at least approach those type of numbers. maybe not get there, but i don’t think it’s a stretch to say holliday could hit something like .300/.400/.550

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 10, 2010 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

Oh that's not a stretch

But you gotta factor in that Rolen was an All-MLB history defensive player on top of it.

yeah

like i said, we’re in agreement that the 2010 team is not going to be good as the 2004 team. that said, they are going to be very good, especially if carp and wainwright pitch like carp and wainwright.

also, ludwick and/or rasmus are capable of producing 75% of what edmonds gave that year, with raz being very good defensively in center field as well.

I can’t recall any game this season where Mizzou just plain gave up. One of the things I like about the team is that they keep fighting right until the end, even when they’re way down. It’s tough to beat a team three times in the Big XII. Given how few times Mizzou have been blown out this season, I can’t complain too much. Better for it to happen now than in the big tourney.

but yes, I think Mizzou would match up well with UNM.

Do you think Saffy’s injury is messing with this team’s psyche? Could they be using it as a scapegoat or am I just listening to the announcers too much?

Saffy’s a good player — by no means a great one. I think they haven’t learned to win without him.

I think at this point we can put away the "so much talent" label

He’s been mind numbingly horrible in Conference play. Sure he flashes the Illinois/Texas type games, but those are going to happen when you’re willing to put up 15 shots in 25 minutes whether you’re shooting well or not, defended or not, or fading away or set. To be honest I think he’d be a great 3rd, maybe even 2nd, banana type guy—-matches up well and plays defense, streak shooter can save you, but he’s just not a guy that you should be relying on to score IMO….and he has the highest FG attempts on the team by 100.

Maybe his universally praised work ethic can fix some of the issues going into next year, but it’s just maddening to me right now and given that he continues to bomb shots despite the past 16 games of bad doesn’t give me much confidence. The shot attempts he takes are just not ones that a <40% shooter should be dreaming of; he just doesn’t play within his ability.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Mar 10, 2010 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

i think your last statement is more true than anything

he doesn’t play within his own ability. he has flashes of absolute brilliance (texas, marquette, illinois) and tries to be that guy all the time instead of focusing on other, simpler things.

this is a mike anderson project. i think next year english will benefit from another offseason of practice and more help with dixon and denmon maturing another year and pressey coming in.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 10, 2010 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I mean I can see him becoming a great secondary player, but he’s just been awful as of late trying to be the go-to guy and just needs to stop that. Hit your open shots, drive to the basket and ditch the Kobe impersonations.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Mar 10, 2010 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

I see him becoming a great star player.

He’s just a sophomore, by conference teams figured him out and got him to take some shots he didn’t want to take. He has a nice move where he can drive to the basket or put a spin on somebody but all too often he gets trapped. He’ll figure out what to do in a given situation, whether he should jump and shoot or try that spin move when he knows he won’t get trapped and will be able to get to the basket. Also, I can see him working on a nice curl move on the court like Tiller does a lot. That could create some baskets.

I was actually more poking at you for saying you can only see him being a secondary player.

I can’t deny that he’s been playing poorly as of late (and I mean in the past 17 games) but he certainly has everything there to be a star. Not saying he will, just saying he probably will become that. It’s not exactly abnormal for sophomore players to hit a long slump like this.

beating 15-15 (7-11 Pac-10) and a 13-16 (5-11 SEC East) teams aren’t necessarily going to go down as good wins in many books.

I feel safe that Mizzou is in. A top five team in what is viewed as one of the top 3 conferences this year will be fine.

Since the Illinois Game...

When Denmon scores in double figures The tigers are 11-0. When he doesn’t…3-7.

Who would you most like to play in our next game?

I would love to play California or Wake Forest. I really don’t want to face Northern Iowa.

Something to cheer you up:

This loss is only going to fuel my passion when I write “Better Know An Opponent: UNLV” next week.

PLEASE NOT UNLV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate playing mid-majors in the tournament, especially in the first round.

Those of us out here in the Wild West

don’t cotton too well to folks calling UNLV or any MWC school a mid-major (spits into imaginary spittoon).

In all seriousness, though, UNLV would be a bad draw. Too similar to UNLV in some respects. Not quite fastest 40 mins, but counts on deep bench and relatively intense defensive pressure.

We could win, but it would be a coin flip, I would say.

agreed

Especially recently in football where the MWC has owned the Pac-10. That being said, I haven’t followed the MWC at all this year, though I thought about going to the Colorado St/SDSU game a couple weeks ago.
