Basketball Live Thread: Evening Games

We start with a nice hate game (whenever the ACC semifinal is done ... yeah, a Big 12 game is NEVER not pre-empted at first) and go all night.  Make this your base of operation...

9:00pm

WAC Finals: Utah State vs New Mexico State (ESPN2)

My Prediction

KState wins in 12 OT’s. 123-114. Bill Self is thrown out in the 7 OT, Cole Aldrich never fouls out, despite committing 45 fouls called out by Bob Knight.

I say

that the other BIG 12 SBN blogs get together and write a letter with the their members signing and sending it to ESPN, and Big 12, surely if the entire conference complains, they will look at it. Probably will even be able to get some radio stations on board.

Great moments are born from great opportunity.

This is just ridiculous.

Of the three games that make up the Big 12 semis and finals, approximately 0.75 of them will have been shown on ESPN.

okay kids

looking at schlabach’s bubble watch this morning and realizing two bids are now gone from his four proclaimed this morning (the cusa upset and the fact that washington won the pac 10), which two would you give it to? i’ve got florida and mississippi state right now.

however, if mississippi state, minnesota win and utah state loses, he’s going to take someone off his lock board. my first in line is VT, how about you?

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 13, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Cal goes off the lock board.

Zero wins against at large tourney teams. One top 50 win. 4 Sub 100 losses.

i don't think cal is in trouble

simply because i don’t think the committee will let the pac 10 be a one bid league.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 13, 2010 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

they were pac 10 regular season champs.

has a reg. season champ from a bcs conference ever been left out?

The Big 12 in '98-99 was pretty close, I think...

Texas was the conference champ at 19-12 with a #45 RPI, and they got into the field with no problem.

yep, in about a half hour.

go new mexico state! i wanna see this bubble absolutely fall apart.

any rock-m-tology updates?

or do i have to wait until tomorrow morning?

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 13, 2010 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

That'll be tomorrow.

Haven’t figured out if I’m going to post a full bracket in the morning, with disclaimers like “If Minnesota wins…” or whatever, or just post a full bracket at about 4pm.

by Bill C. on Mar 13, 2010 8:36 PM CST up reply actions

If I'm still up at the end of all the games...

…I can at least throw a “last four in/out” list out there…would hate for demand to not have supply…

you're the best!

VT
cal
mississippi state
florida

illinois
minnesota
seton hall
rhode island

those are mine.

I'm odd...

looks like they're going to the tourney

always nice to say you have another victory against a tourney team, no matter the seed.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 13, 2010 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

They will most likely get the play in game...

But played at Mizz, KSU, Ok St, Oregon, GT, Colo, Ariz St, and Michigan and lost none by more than 20 which is pretty competitive for a 16 seed.

basically though

if two of minnesota wins/new mexico state wins/mississippi wins happen, then NONE of those teams get in. not illinois, not seton hall, not rhode island, not mississippi, not mississippi state (if they don’t win), not florida, no one.

by StopSpe on Mar 13, 2010 10:18 PM CST reply actions

Decaf has also had 6 or 7 game-winners this year.

No doubt it was going to him, although Georgetown had a real chance at the other end but I think they should have called a time out as they sprinted to half-court. That way they could all regroup and probably get a better look than that weird long layup.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 13, 2010 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

sometimes the element of surprise is a good thing...

…and the dude did end up getting through and scoring an open look…just couldn’t do anything with it yesterday.

by Bill C. on Mar 13, 2010 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

That look was weird though for a couple of reasons.

First, it required an Armstrong-esque leap for mankind in order to get to the basket, so he either does a long layup or tries to float it in, both kind of awkward. Second, he then had to move his arms in such a way to avoid the defender that it wasn’t even physically possible for him to get the strength to put it in from that distance.

Ugh, Stephen Bardo is such a bad announcer.

He’s doing the WAC championship on ESPN2 and he’s got a really annoying voice and keeps screaming about a goaltend that was clearly a clean block.

And can somebody confirm that Stephen Bardo is the same guy that did the Vandy game and talked about how there “weren’t enough black people named after African countries”? He sounds similar to that guy but I’m not sure if he was announcing that game.

NMSU on a nice run.

Now up 5 on Utah State at the final media timeout.

Bardo just said:

“What comes around goes around.” I really wish he would think before speaking, although he did a valid point on the last play as a foul was called on USU after a completely clean block. NMSU up 5, 2 min left.

I think when in doubt...

The committee will simply say that Minn beat Ill on Ill’s home floor. That will break the tie.

I know. Such a difference it is to be 10-7 instead of 9-8

Three shots by Coffee really woke up the committee to how we perform under pressure and gave us a bid in the tournament.

Nothing better than a court rush on the opponent's floor.

That’s what I love most about mid-major conference championships, the ultimate “F*** you” to your host and it also means you just pulled an upset as the higher seed gets home court.

Alright...

…I will be drawing the bracket up from scratch in the morning, but for now…

Last Eight In
Georgia Tech
UTEP
Utah State
California
Notre Dame
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest
Florida

First Eight Out
Mississippi State
Minnesota
Illinois
Seton Hall
Ole Miss
Rhode Island
Memphis
UAB

Could see MSU and Florida flipping when I draw it up again tomorrow…and I’m REALLY going to be rooting for MSU and Minnesota tomorrow, just to see what would happen…

I think that when all else fails that will sit with the committee.

And Florida beat Mississippi State (albeit at home) a month ago.

If the committee is truly trying not to give more credence to recent results (and honestly, I doubt they’ll be able to do that), then that will more or less cancel out, and the rest of the resume is what will matter.

by Bill C. on Mar 13, 2010 11:39 PM CST up reply actions

Just saw College Basketball Final talking about Big East Championship.

Turns out Decaf’s right foot landed on the ground before the shot, meaning he should have been called for traveling.

So that means this week the referees messed up twice big time. First, they failed to start the clock fast enough, giving Evan Turner too much time to hit a game-winner (which wouldn’t have counted if the clock started when he first touched it) and now WVU is given a victory in a game that could have been won by Georgetown in 10 seconds if traveling was called or at least sent to overtime.

"Sometimes when Will Ebner tackles people, I think they are going to explode on impact."

by StopSpe on Mar 13, 2010 11:37 PM CST reply actions

AND

Sherron Collins STILL has never led the Big 12 in any category!

I blame Ed Hightower. There is a good chance he could have used his black magic ( not a racial slur I swear) and been at 2 games at both of those games.
