With all the wrap-up stuff about basketball going on recently, it struck me at how highly regarded Norm Stewart is. I'm not from Missouri -- Texas born, Texas bred as most of you know -- so I didn't really understand the allure.
On the other hand, I went to Missouri during the Quin Snyder era, and always thought of him as being a fine coach. Admittedly, I'm a Quin Snyder apologist, but I just always thought he was a pretty decent guy who made a couple bad decisions.
So I finally did something that I've wanted to do for a while: compare Stewart and Snyder side by side. My opinion's probably not going to be popular, but I think you can see by the chart that the result is both clear and a bit shocking.

First of all, a Thunderdoom would be fun.
Second of all, just ask Bill to explain to me why a freakin’ newcomer gets a position above me DESPITE MY TENURE HERE. Because I’d love to hear it.

Must be April 1
The whole idea of Norm v Quin can be summarized on the 3rd to the last line…league championships. The Zippo for the Gloriously Haired one tells it all.
Quin didn't make postseason every year.
05-06 wasn’t going to make postseason before he got fired. That’s why he got axed.
Facts are facts, man.
Every season that Quin Snyder finished, he made the postseason.

Pardon me....
How on earth does Duke win over Northern Iowa???
(Seriously, every Mizzou fan needs to know Norm coached there at one point in time, because the connection is just epic)

Quin Vs. Norm
I would take Norm any day over Quin. I thought Quin was OK, don’t get me wrong. His program seemed to really unravel in his last couple of years. I think his first couple he rode on the coattails of Norm’s great program. It seemed like his teams stood around the perimeter & shot 3’s waaay too much. Does anybody know what Quin is doing now?
A couple of things to consider.
1. Quin had one reprimand from the NCAA in 7 years as coach. Norm had 2 in 32 years.
(This logic also works in discussions with ku fans).
2. Norm’s HEAD coaching experience at UNI trumps Quin’s assistant role at Duke.
3. This is fairly subjective but my big issue with Quin as a coach (His management skills were reviewed by the NCAA.) is that his guys did not improve significantly during their tenures. Norm’s guys improved and Anderson’s guys improve from year to year and the team gets better in the process.
Revised score = 6 for Norm and 4 for Quin not including number 3 on my list.
I liked Coach Q, but . . .
He clearly was not ready for prime time; and made too many mistakes to get him past his greenness. To me, the greatest difference between the two was their coaching style. Norm coached from the inside out – meaning, he worked his butt off coaching his bigs so they could dominate a weak team, and stay toe-to-toe with stronger teams. Then, he added a flashfire guard or two every year to give his team the final advantage. Coach Q approached the game from inside out . . . with the greatest concentration being the perimeter. When he had AJ, he was able to get away with that, but AJ was special. What makes CMA better than either (in my opinion) is his ‘complete team’ approach – even when he was sometimes short some pieces – and the fact he cares more about the personal character of his recruits than either of the other two.
