"Funky" Askren gets controversial win
Ben Askren comes away with a first round win in Chicago last night, but there's quite a bit of controversy on The Interwebz about the victory. Friend of RMN Maggie Hendricks has the story over at Yahoo Sports.

I should add what Bloody Elbow had to say on the matter:
The ref stops the fight while Thomas is in a modified neck crank. Thomas is fine, he didn’t tap and he wasn’t out. Why would a ref stop that fight? It was competitive and Thomas was not tapping. The ref makes a big show in front of Thomas about announcing that it was a submission. That’s awful reffing, just awful, awful reffing.
Terrible reffing
But I think as soon as Askren got out of that triangle he was going to win the fight no matter what anyway. He was the better athlete and took the best Thomas had and escaped. The only chance he’d have had was a KO at the beginning of a round because Askren was a jokingly better wrestler—-he shot from like 9 feet out and got the TD.
That said Askren’s standup is a joke and should he face a decent defensive wrestler, he’ll be taking a nap. He really needs to work his boxing day and night.
Not afraid to nitpick
