Sources tell ESPN a move to bring MU to the Big Ten is a "done deal."
That's what's going across KOMU's ticker right now. Um ... that's great and all ... but why am I not reading/seeing that anywhere else ... like, perhaps ESPN?
(UPDATE: Apparently Bruce Feldman said it in the Van Pelt podcast I linked in Mizzou Links but hadn't gotten a chance to actually listen to. So there you go. Kudos to KOMU for paying more attention than me.)
(UPDATE #2: I listened to the Feldman/Van Pelt podcast, and nobody says "done deal" ... so ...)
(UPDATE #3: KOMU is retracting the story soon. MAJOR gun-jumpage on their part.)

If this is happening, my 3 reactions will be:
1. Yay academics!
2. Boo for diamond sports.
3. Laughing at Nebraska, because it seems they REALLY wanted this.

Also... 4. Thank god we didn't get left behind.
That’s my biggest fear with the whole expansion thing. If there IS a major realignment, and the Big 12 gets picked a part (i.e. the Pac-10 and SEC start a bidding war for Texas), then we pretty much have to go to the Big Ten, else we’re getting left behind…

By the way...
I’m glad Ryen Russillo brought up how overrated the Northeast market is for college football.
As someone who loosely follows the Minnesota Vikings...
I’ve grown to massively distrust anything that comes from the whole “anonymous source via ESPN” dynamic. Remember last summer? Every other week it was “an anonymous source has told ESPN reporter Jim Gobbledygook that Brett Favre has signed a contract with the Vikings and will be reporting to the team within a few days!” And then of course we’d find out the whole report was BS.
The fact that they were EVENTUALLY right does not disprove my point.

Absolutely.
It was not even a month ago that Cowherd was saying Colorado and Utah were a “done deal” to the Pac-10 … now, Bruce Feldman >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cowherd, and I trust him enough to at least believe now that Mizzou is at/near the top of the list and all, but … yeah, there’s no such thing as a done deal one week after Jim Delany said “we’re nowhere close”…

How in the WORLD did KOMU derive anything even CLOSE to a definitive from that?? I’m extremely curious to know which KOMU staffer heard that and decided to run with the story.

I assume the "done deal" part happened before the podcast started...
…since Feldman said “Nebraska … in addition to Missouri.” Either he had already given the “done deal” line, or somebody at KOMU made the biggest leap of logic I’ve ever seen … especially since “done deal” was in quotes on the ticker.

Further clarification from KOMU...
I was listening live yesterday afternoon to a portion of the ESPN roundtable, which was done in at least three different segments. It’s possible that the podcast was edited down to highlights, or that the part KOMU is referencing was said outside the bounds of the roundtable itself.
Either way, doesn’t seem like something KOMU’s making up, but yeah, fail.
I weep for the loss of recruiting in the state of Texas.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight; it's the size of the fight in the dog.
- Mark Twain
I don't, because there wouldn't be a loss.
We’d be on Texas TV sets as much as we are now, we’d play in Texas roughly one fewer time per year (big loss), and as Gabe mentioned in the PowerMizzou link I posted today on Mizzou Links, if we still dedicated six assistant coaches or so to recruiting the state of Texas, we’d probably see the same results as we do now, ESPECIALLY if Texas were to leave for the SEC or Pac-10, de-centralizing the whole Big 12 region…
Rock M Nation

I've never quite understood the "losing Texas recruiting" argument
recruiting = relationships with HS coaches, not merely where you play.
by jschooltiger on Apr 29, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions
I agree
My cousin Van is a coach at Hazelwood Central and he’ll tell you everything you need to know about recruiting. Everything has to do with the relationships between the high school coaches and college recruiters. Mizzou doesn’t like to recruit at Central because they don’t have good relations with those coaches, even though they have won the state championship 2 years in a row. The coaches at Hazelwood Central still try to get those kids in college somewhere, even if Missouri won’t look at the fastest players in the state. As of last year, the University of Iowa had 9 players on their roster from the St. Louis area, three from Central. The high school coaches have a big impact on where their players go because they’re the ones who have the connections with colleges. They couldn’t give a Damn what conference that school is in as long as they’re getting their kids into a big time school.
Very, very, very true.
In addition, though, I’ve got to wonder if starting in 2014ish, there’s any interest in home and homes with Rice, SMU, North Texas, etc.
It’s not wholly necessary, but it wouldn’t hurt, right?
I am all for those match ups
sooner the better.
That would be awesome.
Also since it seems Mizzou is trying to get its recruiting fingers into more SEC territory, it would be nice to play, Florida A & M (awesome colors), Central Florida, or South Florida. Of course the South Florida one might be too much.

The modifier "former" helps out quite a bit.
For a set of people with notoriously thick skin, journalists get quite pissed off about dissent from within.
What I don’t get is why KOMU sent her a direct message saying there were going to take the story down while nearly simultaneously linking the podcast on their account as if the soundbite corroborates their story.
Let me ask you this, jschooltiger: If the Missourian ran that story, could it get away with simply taking it down? It would have to publish a retraction/correction, no? How come KOMU can hide behind a hyperlink to a statement we already believe to be just a passing statement about a rumor and pretend like there’s no question about the credibility of this story?
They'll need a straight-up retraction...
…because they not only had it on their ticker, but also had Lauren reading it on-air. You can’t take down video that already aired.
Rock M Nation
I'm on Twitter! http://www.twitter.com/billconnelly1
yeah, we'd have to publish a correction
if it ran in print, or put one with the story if it’s online. And actually, we don’t generally take stories down when a correction is needed because you can generally find the story in RSS feeds or on Google search results (Google will save headline and summary data.) We would edit the story to reflect that it had been corrected, like so:
http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2009/04/08/passover-events/
But the rules for broadcast media are different — I think they haven’t gotten quite used to the idea that their stories persist online, versus what Bill C is talking about below (above?) in the comment he just posted. (i.e. that it airs and people move on)
by jschooltiger on Apr 29, 2010 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions
in today's world, simply posting a retraction might not be enough
certainly just removing the story from a site isn’t enough, thanks to google and caches, it’s going to exist somewhere. and thanks to social media, the “content” of the story is going to spread quickly, even if the original story is removed. Running a retraction/updating the original story is a start, but still people are only going to see when they come to the site…and then KOMU is depending on other people to share KOMU’s mistakes via Twitter/Facebook.
Makes a lot more sense in my opinion for KOMU to update the original article with a correction, then push that corrected piece out through twitter/facebook, making an effort to alert people more directly. Considering that it’s through Twitter that they got publicly busted, it makes sense to publicly respond. They made a mistake, but acting like it didn’t even happen just compounds it.

Instead of updating the original article...
They just killed the original and then replaced it with a bastardized, off-the-radar, updated version that makes no mention of this morning’s reports.
Result: Pretending like nothing ever happened, or as it’s known in some businesses, “fraud.”
As soon as I see a retraction or an admission of a mistake from KOMU, I’ll be happy to post it and my indignant state will subside. But until then, I continue to believe this situation has been botched HORRIBLY.
I should clarify:
A PUBLIC admission. Sending one person a direct message on Twitter doesn’t exactly qualify.
it's getting picked up all over the state now...
Hi there. I’m the twitter whistle blower. Not quite as cool as the guy who blew the whistle on Bernie Madoff, but whatever. My parents are in Spfd, MO and apparently the TV news (KOLR 10, the CBS affiliate) is running teases saying, “Mizzou athletics will be making a big announcement today.” I’ll be interested to hear what this “announcement” is and what information they’re getting!
I am as anxious as anyone else to hear news on what is actually going down with the move to the Big10, but KOMU is supposed to be teaching honest, objective journalism. By discussing this on air all morning doesn’t make me incredibly proud to say where my journalism degree is from at the moment.

Until a viable source confirms it
Mizzou to the Big 10 will happen just after Colorado leaves for the Pac-10 (I believe Colin Cowherd made that same bold assessment)…
Surgeon General's Warning: K-State-Mizzou basketball may increase the risk of high blood pressure. Please consult your doctor prior to watching any of these games.
What about the Big 12?
By that, I mean we’ve heard so much about the structure of the new Pac-10 and Big 10, has there been any thoughts/predictions/theories on what the Big 12 plans on doing post-expansions? Or is it kind of a wait-and-see approach?
"I'm pretty sure there's more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is."
The Big 12's power brokers (sans OU, maybe) will catch on elsewhere.
But the concern for all the others is exactly what Bill and jschooltiger were talking about above by saying that Missouri simply can’t afford to get left behind.
The remnants of Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, etc. are going to be in one HELL of a predicament.
Yikes...
Sounds like Rice/SMU/Houston/TCU after SWC was dissolved…
"I'm pretty sure there's more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is."
Bingo.
OU is the one I’m most curious about, though. They won’t get the aTm treatment (a.k.a. UT dragging them along) and I don’t think they have a natural tie anywhere.
SEC
keeps talking about making moves if there’s a “significant shift in the conference paradigm”, any chance they try and go for OU?
"I'm pretty sure there's more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is."
The ACC is their first playground.
FSU and Miami are right in the crosshairs, Clemson makes a lot of sense, and Georgia Tech could even things out.
If they went West, they’d want Texas (and by default, A&M), but again, I can NOT imagine a situation in which the bigwigs in UT’s administration would allow Texas’ academics to be grouped in with the SEC. That isn’t academic purgatory in the eyes of Texas. That’s academic hell. And at the risk of editorializing too much, the people of Texas love themselves and their prestige WAY too much (I’m putting this delicately) to fall in that group.
Remember, Texas BADLY wanted to be in the Pac-10 prior to the formation of the Big 12. I think Texas looks West first, which hurts OU even worse.
OU certainly doesn't hold the same opinion of themselves academically...
…and if the SEC decided to move to 16 teams (not saying they would, but if it came to that), I could absolutely see them nabbing OU/OSU to the west, and then either Miami/FSU or GT/Clemson to the east. Obviously they could just go with the four east teams (or somebody’s brilliantly unique suggestion of UNC/Duke), but I could absolutely see OU moving to the SEC if they were trying to get to 16 without hurting their prestige.

Brilliantly unique =/= brilliant
Can’t imagine the SEC pulling in Tobacco Road to improve basketball or academics simply because it doesn’t bring much in the way of gridiron dollars. At this point, the SEC has totally embraced its stereotype: “We do football, damn it.”
Oh I don't think it would happen...
…but I loved the creativity of the idea.

I see OU as the consolation prize...
…for whoever loses the Pac-10 vs SEC bidding war for Texas (if it comes to that … and I’m willing to believe it will). Really, that probably protects OSU from falling into the ISU-KSU-Tech-Baylor hell, because they would probably be a tag-along.

//could totally do it myself
full disclosure
I’m a j-school alum. and this pisses me off. Along with spreading it through Twitter earlier (when I retweeted the response that @s_zimms got), I also posted it to Facebook. First response I got was from a fellow Mizzou alum (not journalism) saying Mizzou was just looking for attention, and that since Mizzou runs KOMU…well, connect the dots yourself.
I know that there is some great work being done at KOMU (and the Missourian and KBIA as well) by journalism students, but simply removing the story without any kind of public acknowledgment just feeds into the idea that those publications are nothing more than mouthpieces for the university.
The story would absolutely spread this quickly even if KOMU publicly acknowledged the mistake – but that’s a loss anyway. They already jumped the gun, now acknowledge it and move on. Acting like it didn’t happen doesn’t mean “it didn’t happen”.
Was this mentioned on-air at all? I wonder if it comes into play with the next broadcast.
