if bowers isn't on their list

it’s because he’s too highly regarded by mizzou fans. imo, they have it right. but it’s hard for me to tell for sure what they think. the link isn’t working.

Seriously?

If Tony Mitchell (who IS on the list) does indeed a) play for Mizzou next year and b) do pretty well, he probably still won’t put up numbers better than what Bowers did last year. The “unknown quantity over known quantity” thing gets taken too far sometimes, and this is one example.

Also . . .

assuming that everyone makes it to campus, my bet is that Ratliffe is the most productive newcomer.

The one thing I learned from the links..

is that Cody Hawkins has beaten OU/Neb/West Virginia. Amazing that with the string of Smith/Daniel/Gabbert we have not been able to beat OU/Texas if Hawkins can lead a team to beat those 3.

True.

He’s also had a hand in losses to Colorado State/Iowa State/Toledo in that same time frame.

Reason #1...

…why individual wins and losses don’t really mean jack. Ron Prince beat Texas twice, and I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure Gary Pinkel’s a better coach than Prince. Lofty words, I know.

And while Hawkins has indeed beaten OU, I’m not really sure why Nebraska is part of that example…Smith and Daniel went a combined 4-3 versus them…

I included Nubs

Because it is a team clearly better than Colorado. All 3 of those were when they beat them I believe. Not positive about WVU. Just stating, that in all the years of Smith/Daniel/Gabbert, outside of maybe a Smith win over Nebraska, I don’t think any of those qb’s have beaten a team that I can say were better than us. I don’t think this Mizzou team has upset a team in like 6 years. Thats very surprising.

Just basically stating..

That since I got to school (2005), there has not been one game mizzou played where I went in thinking there was better than 50% chance we would lose, and then we won. However there are plenty of the opposite.

For the sake of contrarianism:

Colorado was a bowl team that year. Nebraska was not.

by RPT on Jul 16, 2010 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Fair Enough.

But my original point remains the same. I guess the worse you are, the more games your underdog in, the more chances for an upset, but I mean since 2005.
Game we won that we should have lost-
Maybe Nebraska in 2005. They finished a game better than us, but we beat them two years before at home, so I actually thought we would win, but I could be convinced that this was an upset.

Games we lost that we should have won-
2005-New Mexico
2006-Iowa State
2008-Kansas
2009-Baylor
2009-Navy

Now I’m not bashing Pinkel, or anything like that. I think hes a good coach, just surprised that of all the upsets in college football over the years, this team hasn’t really pulled one off in 5 seasons.

That's fair.

I see the point you’re making. It’s just my personal preference that leads me to prefer being the “better” team and thus favored in 80-85 percent of games rather than being considered inferior just to have the chance to pull an upset.

by RPT on Jul 16, 2010 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh I prefer this to being K St or Colorado.

Don’t get me wrong. Just would prefer the team that is favored in 80-85 percent of games and occasionally pulls off an upset in that 15-20 percent of games.

I feel that is about the peak this program can get to.

We will never be Texas or Oklahoma, but its realistic for this program to be favored in 9 or 10 games a season, and occasionally win 1 or 2 of the games they aren’t.

The only reason . . .

. . . Hawkins has defeated these teams, IMO, is because his team was so weak the other team took them for granted and did not properly prepare. Good teams do not look past Mizzou – they prepare their very best, and we just have to do the same.

I NEED the Mizzou Preview

All we ever get down here is SEC mags…which is understandable. But I’m thirsting for some Mizzou info (the kind not found on RMN, of course)

I would not at all be surprised . . .

. . . if Marcus Denman stands out as the backcourt leader of the Tigers this year and has an eye-opening junior season. He just seems to be more experienced than Dixon, and a more complete player than English.

by countrycal on Jul 16, 2010 9:26 AM CDT reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised, either

But frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if any, some, or all of the three – Denmon, Dixon, English – really step up. I do think people are making the right call picking Kimmie as the most likely to make a huge impact, though. If his mental game catches up with his physical skills, then he’s going to be a terror, especially if he can unlock his inner Chievous and really start drawing fouls driving the basket.

All that being said, I think the cogs that are really going to make Mizzou click this year are Ratliffe and Moore (and maybe Mitchell, although I don’t know as much about his game). One thing about Mizzou last season is that they had to have guards crashing to get rebounds. If we have big men that can really dominate on rebounding and get the ball out to streaking guards (beautiful outlet passes being something Big Steve has shown a talent for), then we’re really going to blow some people up. Color me excited.

I'm just as excited

It has been a long time since we have had such an array of talent and experience. All that I see that needs to develop is the molding of all elements into a team, at which CMA is quite adept. Kimmie has already shown he can be team “glue” off the court, but not yet on the court (though a few times late in the season last year he sacrificed scoring for rebounding, and showed other signs of on-court “glue”).

We still don’t know how the newcomers will do against strong D-1 competition, so for me the most likely choices for on-court “glue” are the six key returnees. Of those, Denman and Dixon are at the top of my list, mostly because of their balance on both ends of the court, and willingness and ability to hit the boards regularly. I believe you are definitely right about Stevie. If he becomes an Arthur Johnson in the middle (even without the scoring) he will make this team darn near unbeatable. The same goes for Ratliffe, though I see Bowers and Mitchell playing different roles.

by countrycal on Jul 16, 2010 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Of course, I wouldn’t OBJECT if Steve wanted to turn into full-on Arthur Johnson, and I’d be real surprised if he didn’t find his groove offensively this year. I don’t necessarily expect him to score 20 points a game, but he’s got soft hands and some pretty solid post moves, it just seemed like last season he lacked confidence on that end of the floor.

All I can say is, on days when Marcus and Kimmie are clicking…God help anybody trying to stop us.

One of the comments on that Rush the Court article is kind of hilarious

“The down year contributes to Burks and Higgins being ranked so high”

Down year? Really? 3 Big 12 teams in the preseason top 15 is a down year?

really?

Think he means down year on individual talent.

There are no Kevin Durants or Michael Beasleys or Blake Griffins. Last year 5 big 12 guys went in the first round. This year, Perry Ellis might be the only guy expected to do the same. Maybe Shelby too.
