On June 3, Beebe pushed for Deaton to declare allegiance to the Big 12. Beebe sent an e-mail to Deaton after reading an Associated Press story about the Big 12 spring meetings that included a quote from Deaton that said, "We’re not shutting our ears to anything."
Beebe wrote: "I admire you greatly Brady, but the quote at the end of this article, which is being written about throughout the country, is what is damaging us so badly. We have to have an unequivocal commitment in a few days!!"

Sports fan here
This has been a learning experience for me. I wasn’t old enough in the last realignment to really understand the greater picture.
Do these type of interactions happen often between ADs and conference heads? Does this seem a bit off?
Can we get the RMN team of lawyers to wade in on this? Perahps Smith/Smith and Ebner…

Errr... Dave Matter may have tweeted it
But Joe Walljasper wrote the article.

The 2010 Missouri Football Preview - Coming in August!
So in other words...
…Mizzou did everything right and still got blamed for it even though it’s now clear that the fault lies almost entirely with Nebraska. I am shocked, shocked I say, shocked.
I know this didn't work out perfectly for Mizzou...
…but all I can say is, the sentiment behind the Alden and Deaton e-mails are EXACTLY the sentiment I’d have tried to convey in the same messages. Alden and Deaton did so many things EXACTLY as I hope I’d have done them … which ticks me off all the more that Mizzou became a laughingstock regardless.

I really want to see the Nebraska emails now
I’d also like to see the emails between Beebe and Deloss Dodds, but this is a family site so maybe you can’t post those.
Don't hold your breath...
…on the Nebraska emails. I don’t foresee the Lincoln Journal-Star or Omaha World-Herald putting in a FOIA request to Dr. Tom anytime soon.

maybe Brown, Chip
or some of our pals in Tulsa who merrily trashed the crap out of MU will make that request. I don’t see the NU vs. everybody else vitriol toning down as the season gets going, I would expect it cranks up, especially when the insane-o faction of the NU fanbase starts throwing poo. Which they will, at the first slightest percieved ‘insult’ from UT or other school covering writers.
Considering ol’ Tom and Harvey’s reluctance (not) to take shots with Jim Delany standing behind them, bet they didn’t handle things quite the way Mr. Deaton did.
And almost zero chance any of the ‘MU is destroying the B12!’ crowd comes back and shares that they were just a bit off. Not exciting enough- and makes the writers look like jerks/poor journalists in retrospect.
And as I tweeted earlier...
…the first comment in the comments thread so perfectly encapsulates a good portion of not only idiot Mizzou fans, but idiot Internet fans in general. The grammar, the amazing conclusion, everything.

Too bad this is coming out after the frenzy
From Beebe:
"I request that your public comments express the positives about the Big 12," he wrote. "To the degree you feel you have to placate constituents who would like for you to express interest in another conference; I hope that you can indicate that your institution is a proud member of the Big 12, but that you will monitor the environment."
And
From Deaton:
"If any university President is not open to all information and analysis that may benefit their university, they should not be in their job. Frankly, I do not understand or accept the line of reasoning being suggested. As our meeting demonstrated, every President at the Board meeting was looking out for their University’s interest. They should be applauded for that.
This article contains clear, unequivocal evidence that we were being responsible members of the conference, informing them of pertinent information, yet doing what we needed to do to protect our taxpayer’s interests in attempting to provide the best University their money can pay for.
While I know that certain writers in the conference’s footprint don’t care now that the story is over and it’s not going to inflame their readership any more, I’d love to see a reaction to this new information.
As a K-State fan,
I have been very surprised at the amount of pure vitriol Missouri has received regarding the recent realignment….From everything I’ve read on the topic, I can honestly say I’d want my school administrators to act in exactly the same way. I fail to see how entertaining offers translates to betrayal…we allow individuals to do so all the time. While I recognize that had the Big 10 offered Missouri they would have left, I also understand that if my school had been in the exact same situation, I would have wanted the president to act in the same way.
I am glad Missouri is still here though…I can’t wait until the first KSU-MIZ Basketball game.
Yeah, basketball could be VERY fun this season...

Especially since...
…Nebraska was blatantly trying to break up the conference to avoid paying penalty fees.
I'm with you . . .
. . . on both counts. Often the complete picture is only seen by those willing to wait and investigate instead of jumping to conclusions and then moving on to some other more interesting subject. Mizzou officials were professional, reasonable, and properly loyal to both the university and conference. Actually, I was proud of the way all four remaining north teams handled the situation.
And, yes, I also am anticipating some fantastic basketball between MU and KSU – hold on to your hat, that is going to be some real basketball.
