"M*A*S*H"

“M*A*S*H” changed my life. I think it signaled the beginning of actually growing up. Before MASH, in war movies soldiers die quickly and seemingly painlessly. Soldiers didn’t lose eyes, legs, and arms. And every battle ever fought by Americans (other than Pearl Harbor) was a smashing victory for the Red, White and Blue.

Coupled with “The Green Berets” two years prior I began questioning the value of war, if there is such a thing. I was (at 17) ready to go if called, but I really didn’t want to go to another jungle in another part of the far east. My Grandfather frequently said “Wars are started by people my age, maybe they should be fought by people my age. I guarantee you they wouldn’t last as long.” How can something so silly make so much sense?

by joetown sarge on Jul 20, 2010 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

crap, typo....

MASH was a crappy movie.

The television show was unbelievable…I’m not old enough to remember it (ended in 83, I was born in 80) but I downloaded and watched nearly every episode a couple of years ago…it’s definitely a reminder of different times and different attitudes.

I have seen 1 1/2 Robert Altman films

And since I didn’t care for what I saw, I hereby logically declare that he’s overrated and all his movies (including the ones I haven’t seen) suck.

MASH was a crappy movie

compared to the TV show. As a standalone movie, it’s just another Vietnam movie (yes, I’m aware the show was about the Korean War, but if you missed the Vietnam undertones, you weren’t paying attention.)

by CPC on Jul 20, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

the show . . .

was clearly a mix of Korea and Vietnam, but the movie was released in 1970 and based on a 1968 novel, written before feeling about Vietnam had coalesced. The show took everything subtle about the movie and made caricatures of it (looking at you, Frank Burns).

Roger Ebert is smarter than I am. I’ll let him explain why it isn’t a crappy movie:

What do you think of San Diego State?

Specifically how well can Missouri slow down QB Ryan Lindley to WR Vincent Brown. The two are a vastly underrated combo since the Aztecs are not that good.

I have a question for you...

What’s the one SDSU home game (besides the fireworks game) that I better not miss? I’ve yet to attend a single SDSU sporting event, even though I drive right through campus just about every day.

by CPC on Jul 20, 2010 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

well...

You can have your pick of seats for most games since the fan base isnt great. This years team should at worst be exciting with the passing game. Colorado State would be a game the Aztecs should win so if that is important that is a game to see. The Utah game could be interesting since the Utes have the potential to be good so you would see a quality opponent.

So the NCAA is throwing its weight around right now regarding the whole "sports agents paying college players" issue

They’ve hit the Pac-10 and are investigating schools in the ACC and SEC…
My question, then, is 3-fold:
1) Do you expect the NCAA to expand its investigation into a program in the Big 12?
2) If so, which program would you expect to be the likeliest target?
and, I know none of us want to think about something like this, but
3) Is there any chance Mizzou ends up a part of this investigation?
You know, assuming the NCAA decides to eradicate this whole issue once and for all and penalize every program with even a whiff of impropriety.

How do I convince my girlfriend to root for Mizzou Men's Basketball?

She is a former college athlete (she played basketball for Wyoming when they won the NIT a couple years ago).

She refuses to support or even acknowledge that the team is good. In her mind, its just “create havoc, drive to the lane, fouls, and full court pressure that doesn’t work on big teams capable of preparing for it. They don’t have any real shooter (Kimmeh is not legit yet) and they don’t play ‘Team Basketball’ i.e. they play one-on-one a lot and rarely have a real half-court offense (just look at the games they lost in the last two NCAA tournaments).” She also does not have a high opinion of Mike Anderson’s recruiting.

Basically what I’m looking for is a clear argument that point-by-point outlines why she should change her mind and give MU Basketball a chance. This has been a main point of contention regarding sports in our relationship (she’s all for MU Football). Perhaps you could expand upon the subject and address other arguments against rooting for Mizzou. This would be a great post I could use to debate with her since my ability to argue basketball with her is underwhelming at best.

I read your guys’ Roundtables every week and am looking forward to hearing your response.

Just surprised...

Not saying Mizzou’s in game coaching is bad…but I think it would be tough to argue that the mizzou football staff is better at in game coaching than CMA.

by MUTIGERS86 on Jul 21, 2010 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I think

She has more of a experience with basketball having played it, whereas football is just like a pastime for her. I guess its harder for her to watch basketball at any level (she’s NOT a fan of the NBA) without judging it critically (but most often accurately).

Its my understanding that her opinion is: CMA is a coach who has gotten by on implementing a system that is so different it causes problems and match-up problems but doesn’t teach complete basketball skills or develop player’s talent’s beyond a playground mentality/level.

I'd ask her

But Nolan Richardson doesn’t coach at Mizzou.

I never watched Richardson coach, nor any of his teams that played in the SWC and later the SEC, but I would say its fairly indicative that his style led continued success at reaching the NCAA tournament, Eddie Sutton before him was no slouch.

Richardson did win one NCAA Championship for Arkansas.

By the way, the Number #1 Seed in the West Region the Year Richardson won his Championship? Missouri

I won't claim to have an in-depth knowledge of basketball

particularly coaching or what it takes to make a good team. However, my understanding is that a playground ball is a lot of off-the-dribble stuff, passing typically only when the player with the ball can’t score on his own. Which would imply not very many assists.

Last year, Mizzou had 522 Assists, compared to 382 by their opponents. Including only conference opponents, that’s 205 assists vs. 186. The assists per game puts us in 7th in conference, below average. However, looking at defensive assists against (and the fact that only 2 teams in conference averaged less A/G than our opponents did) certainly seems, to me, to indicate that our DEFENSIVE teamwork is pretty impressive, even if our offensive teamwork is bordering on selfish at times.

by Andy--01 on Jul 21, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

And, that was just 2009-10

We had nearly 3 A/G more than the 2nd best team in conference i 08-09. That means that teams 2-8 were closer to each other than teams 1 and 2 were. That is team offense.

by Andy--01 on Jul 21, 2010 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

See

This is a lot more along the lines of a positive argument in favor of CMA’s style.

However, I think someone could make a valid counter-point that our rate-of-assists was high due to the style of play creating more turnovers, more possessions and playing a more transition/fast break offense.

Show her tapes of the Quin Snyder years

if she doesn’t then believe that Anderson’s teams play “team basketball”, just from the comparison between the two, then all hope is lost.

by Andy--01 on Jul 21, 2010 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

She actually

Was around during the Quin Snyder years, her argument is that Snyder’s team played a more traditional style of basketball, the quality of the players and the quality of the coaching may not have been exemplary (and she wasn’t necessarily a huge fan of Snyder either) but at least it was less of a “gimmick” team identity.

by rhansom on Jul 21, 2010 9:01 AM CDT up reply actions

You error

Is in misunderstanding my opinion of Snyder’s basketball. I am not going to defend any coach over another, I enjoy watching CMA because its uptempo and smothering and has yielded positive results; I enjoy watching other programs because they can play half-court basketball in addition to transition basketball.

Throwing up random statistics is about as effective as throwing up 30 threes.

by rhansom on Jul 21, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't take this the wrong way

But quite frankly, I don’t think that there’s anything that you can do to change her mind.

Especially if she played the game and was in a “traditional” system.

If she views the 40 Mintues style as a “gimmick” it will be hard to convince her otherwise. Even if that gimmicky style has proven successful for most of Nolan Richardson’s and Mike Anderson’s careers.

Often, I think people refer to styles on basketball (or CFB) as “gimmicks” because they are experiencing a level of cognitive dissonance and unfamiliarity with the product. (this is where the RAWR! FULLBACK crowd comes from).

You mentioned upstream that she doesn’t watch basketball and is not a fan of the NBA (which is also more one-on-one oriented). My guess is that she has an idea of how basketball is “supposed” to be played, and I don’t think it matters what facts or data you bring to the table. It is a debate that you are not equipped to win (through no fault of your own).

I think you may ultimately be right, but I still feel that it is my duty to fight the good fight.

Which is why I was looking for the kind of in-depth retort I feel the people on RockMNation could provide. Even if I can’t convince her, it might be a usefully guide for debating the point against others, it doesn’t have to be a lost cause.

if a style of basetball wins games, then its successful.

I dont care if its different or its not “real” basketball, if it wins I’m fine with it and we were in the elite 8 2 years ago. If playground bball wins games and playground bball is fun to watch, then I’ll definately support it.
