can someone explain the fullback joke to me? im not even entirely sure whether this blog is advocating a fullback and making fun of people who dont want it, or vice versa. i think its vice versa, but hell, i dont know. and whatever it does mean…why?

its pretty straightforward really.

there are quite a few crazy mizzou fans over at tigerboard and maybe a few on RMN who hate mizzou’s offense. And they think that the reason mizzou cant get “over the hump” is because we play a gimmick style of football instead of power i big ten style football. They think that if we used a fullback we would automaticly be a national title contender. These are also the same people who want pinkel and yost fired.

okay good

i am a miami dolphins fan. subsequently, i hate the big 10, scores of 3-0, and terrorists. i enjoy dan marino, the passing game, and apple pies.

ill definitely concede the running game has its benefits (i hope that yelling NO FULLBACK! doesnt also mean NEVER RUN!) but yeah, we play in the big 12. pass the damn football. thanks.

Actually I am a fan of using fullbacks but I don't believe it would make us great..

I think they’re necessary sometimes in short yardage situations such as the goal line..however I know how anti fullback the rest of you are so I’ll shut my trap now…

by tiger24 on Jul 23, 2010 1:46 AM CDT up reply actions

It’s not that they are anti-fullbacks per se. As I understand it the argument goes like this:

When you run a system like, oh, say, I dunno, the spread, it isn’t just a matter of training everyone what to do, you also select players who have mental and physical attributes that pay off the most within your system. So for the spread that basically means that where there is a tradeoff at any given between speed and strength, you’re mostly going for the fast guy over the strong guy (within the limits of, y’know, nose tackles can’t be 120 pound sprinters, etc). Your offensive line needs to spread out and the react fast to manipulate the gaps that this opens up, your receivers have to get places in a hurry, blah blah blah.

To use a fullback well it isn’t just a matter of finding one sufficiently tough fast solid guy and handing him the football, you have to have some power blocking that will shove a big hole for him and such… and Mizzou just isn’t equipped to provide that support, because the players are all optimized for a spread offense instead. And you can only have so many players under scholarship, so it’s not like you can go out and get a whole spread #1 offense and then a second smashmouth #1 offense too.

But fans watching from the stands don’t see all of that, they just look out at a short yardage situation and say “y’know what works in these situations? A fullback. I’ve been saying this for years and Pinkel still hasn’t got one, he’s so stubborn, RAWR!!1” And then follows on RMN the great rolling of eyes… And a tight end is sent out to pick up the short yardage anyway… or at least, that’s what happened when we had Coffman. Last year we just panicked slightly and looked lost. hopefully things are looking up a tad more this year.

The people of greater football wisdom than I (and there are many) will now proceed to tell you all the ways in which I got this wrong :)

Just to clarify even more, the reason you want fast guys on the spread is this:

Different offenses have different philosophies:

The idea of a spread is that the advantage offenses have over defenses is that they only need to have one guy open somewhere in space, so you putt a bunch of fast guys out there, spread them way the heck out so you can’t double cover anyone very easily, and have them burn around like crazy knowing that pretty much someone somewhere is going to come free (note, can be a runner or a passer – runners come off scrimage, passers stretch the field, they both make space fore each other.

In contrast, smashmouth offense basically says "ok, you might be able to catch us, but we’re stronger than you so we’ll keep running even while you try to hold on.

The option says "we only need one guy covered less than the others, so we’ll set up several plays that evolve from the same starting move, and then read the defense to see which one they are covering the least.

So you can see how for each of these kinds of things you would want totally different players, at almost all positions. And that’s why it’s almost impossible to flip styles for just a few plays in the middle of a game, and to do that well enough to actually succeed against a defense that has to be built to handle any and all of the systems it is going to see in a given year.

also, in college, you hve limited practice time

so it’s not really feasible to install both a smashmouth and a spread scheme at the same time.

by jschooltiger on Jul 23, 2010 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Right. Anything done half-arsed is going to get stuffed with a vengeance, so the only way to get by is to optimize to the max, and do whatever yo are going to do very very well. And that takes a lot of resources, and as JST says here, time that the coaches don’t have.

and for thew record in my opinion D-Wash should be able to get us short-yardage TDs.

sometimes he didnt come through last year but hopefully that changes.
