I would assume that as a good faith gesture...

The columbia PD let the Mizzou athletic dept know that they were going to charge him soon, which is the reason for the timing of the suspension.

by MUTIGERS86 on Aug 30, 2010 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

That's what I was thinking as well.

When the suspension was given before any legal actions were taken against Washington, I thought that someone informed Coach Pinkel that legal action was going to move forward. It also might have hinged on whether Washington was going to seek out a deal that supplanted lesser charges instead of being tried on a felony charge.

by M Krip on Aug 30, 2010 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Or they could have known, same as everyone, he was in some form of legal doo doo, and suspended him for that.

Well...

Keep in mind he still has a redshirt season left. If he can fight this and win in court, it’s not like he will be a draft pick or anything next year, so it wouldnt shock me if he hung around for next year.

by MUTIGERS86 on Aug 30, 2010 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

yep.

With Lawrence, Moore, Josey and Murphy, Mizzou’s running backs situation goes from “experienced with upside” to “mostly inexperienced with upside”. There’s still talent there to succeed, it’s just that the potential has to become production earlier than anticipated, particularly for Lawrence (and probably Moore when he gets healthy).

Gotta think this places a lot more pressure on B. Gabbert and his young wideouts. Good news is that Jackson looks to be a starter on Saturday, but his health still has to be a question mark.

Follow me on twitter.com/SteveCusumano

by MizzouCus on Aug 30, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I’m not ready to enter the panic room. Obviously, I’m a big Kendial Lawrence believer (if you haven’t heard), but I think this is a situation where the system is going to carry a lot of the burden. Derrick Washington is incredibly talented, no doubt, but I think the players behind him — specifically Lawrence and Moore — are at least on his same level. Now, a down hasn’t been played and we won’t know anything until 11:30am Saturday, but losing Washington doesn’t make me tear my hair out.

All of that said: this is an incredibly sad story, and I hope it finds a just resolution. Go, justice system, go.

As MUTIGERS86 says below, he's got the redshirt available

If guilty, we can hopefully guarantee he’ll never be seen on field again – even if his sentence would allow him to play.

If innocent, I would be shocked if this were brought to a conclusion (barring a plea bargain) soon enough that it would make sense to not call this a red-shirt season. However, I find it unlikely that this would still be going next year, so assuming he’s able to stay in school and keep his head down, he should be eligible to play next year – again, assuming innocence.

I just have a hard time

envisioning a scenario where

1. Washington gets cleared legally to the point where he’d be welcomed back for a circumstance like a redshirt

And

2. The process of getting Washington cleared takes less than 12 months

I can see the fan base being wary of accepting him back

However, the right thing to do here is to let the law have its say and trust that Justice will be done. Once justice is done, the Athletic Department needs to accept that.

There will always be people who are suspicious of him and any verdict that is handed down, but as long as the AD doesn’t interfere, if he’s found “not guilty”, it will be important for the program to show that they will stick behind kids who are acquitted.

by Andy--01 on Aug 30, 2010 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd be willing to bet...

…that a substantial portion of the fan base (and ANY fan base) has already made up its mind one way or the other on this case. Which is obviously very unfortunate. Some will always believe the female, some will always believe the male.

by Bill C. on Aug 30, 2010 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

What I'm getting at is that it isn't a binary thing

There’s a lot of possibilities between “we find out the defendant made it all up” and “Washington is guilty of everything and then some”. His case could be reconciled and still be considered “guilty” where the team might not want the association. It’s essentially the line between the “family” and “first class” principles that Pinkel likes to talk about. Now that I type it out I see it more likely that he’d be back, but I could definitely see a “you paid a bunch of money in a plea bargain and we don’t want to pull strings to get you a redshirt so you can get the year back you lost to rape” response from the staff(again, if those were the circumstances, not that I think they are).

a criminal case

shouldn’t take a year to conclude if the Defendant is interested in expediting the process. Most people slow play the system but if you want to move it quickly, you can do it much quicker than a civil case.

curious what D-Wash's next move would be

and if there’s a deal on the table that allows him to plead guilty have the charge reduced to a misdemeanor. That would allow him to rejoin the team (in theory) since I believe the policy is that any player charged with a felony is suspended until the felony is resolved. Reducing the felony to a misdemeanor, I think, would do that, and Pinkel could bring Washington back onto the team…though I’m not sure how I feel about that, sounds more like a loophole, and I’d rather Mizzou’s athletic department stay away from that kind of look-the-other-way behavior.

A person who says they are a former MU tutor claims student/tutor meetings are never to take place off campus so the fact they were meeting off campus in the first place should raise some red flags.

I know the Fulmer Cup is a joke and this charge against Washington is serious, but I think the FC does give a good indication of just how fast things have fallen apart at Mizzou. A few weeks ago, Mizzou looked stable and were ranked very low in the FC rankings. With the two recent DUI’s coupled with this charge, it looks like they will jump easily into second place and will be pushing Georgia for first. All within one week.

my first time going to Edward R Jones dome,

Where is there available parking in that area usually if I don’t have anything reserved ahead of time? I don’t mind walking a mile or so with my family if needed either. We usually park up town in Columbia for games at Faurot field.

Any help or tips would be appreciated. =)

by M Krip on Aug 30, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Personally, I do the MetroLink.

There is a huge gravel lot right across from the Ed, and several other lots downtown (remember, Busch and the DrinkScotch are within walking distance).

MetroLink is like $4 roundtrip, free parking, and you get out of the area quicker if you’re looking to bail right after the game. You’re looking at $20 for parking, and getting hassled to get out. I’m guessing you’re coming from the west, so you’ll pass several MetroLink stations on your way in to town.

http://www.metrostlouis.org/MetroLink/stationlist.asp Either page (red or blue), you’re looking at getting off at the Convention Center stop. The stations ABOVE the Convention Center stop are the stops North (red line) and West (blue line) of the dome.

Scariest Thought

If anyone can help ease my fear right now please steer me right.
The thing that frightens me about losing DWash is the fact that he seemed to be the only vocal leader on this roster. in years past we have had a guy like spoon every year that was the vocal leader and you could always see had the guys attention it was the same with Chase. The scary part to me going into this game is not knowing who that leader is going to be. I love the make up of this team and will be cheering for them regardless of the opponent, and glad that our opponent will now be another college team and not the long arm of the law.

some lead by their actions on the field, some guys are louder behind the scenes. just because there doesn’t seem to be a clear cut guy jumping around and yelling like a manic doesn’t mean there aren’t leaders.

I've always thought vocal leadership was overrated

Lead by example.Speak up when necessary, but you don’t need someone running their mouth all of the time.

Agreed

However, as a fan that basis my teams confidence on players body language and interaction with one another, that is a relatively improtant factor for me. I am just sharing my opinion in a public forum. I do think actions are much louder than words and hope to see guys fall in line behind the organizations goals. I just wondered if I was the only one thinking this at the time.

Sad development

A solid running game is going to be key – I hope Kendial is ready to go. More than anything, this turns the offense into the Blaine show. We will go as he goes.

Anyone NOT see this coming?

All I can say is that this team has the ability to PLAY through this. I’m hoping that all the adversity stays OFF the field! What ever the outcome, FOCUS on the game! MIZ—-

What, that one of our star players would be charged with sexual assault right before the season? Yeah, we were all just waaaiting for that.

The discussion on whether to @Washington on Twitter was really interesting.

"What's misunderstood about you?"
"Nobody thinks I'm a genius."

Hey Gabbert,

Step up, bro, it’s your offense now

Making you feel old since 9/26/09

by solidpit on Aug 30, 2010 5:43 PM CDT reply actions

it was his offense anyway

if missouri is going to be a player for a conference championship and on the national level, it’s not going to be because derrick washington is or isn’t on the team.

If it was Gabbert..

would it be a different story?

by tiger24 on Aug 30, 2010 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

if it was gabbert i think we’d struggle to make a bowl game
