The Trib (Dave Matter): Emptying the Notebook
GOOD● Missouri and Oklahoma are tied for the most pass attempts in the Big 12 with 111. But nobody has given up fewer sacks than MU’s four. And Blaine Gabbert will be the first to admit that a couple of those have been on him, not his offensive line.
...
● The Tigers have converted on 19 of 22 scoring chances in the red zone, the second-best percentage in the Big 12. Of teams with 20 red-zone chances or more, only Stanford, Ohio State, TCU and Houston have a better scoring percentage than MU.
● Third downs have been trouble for the offense. The Tigers have converted just 39.6 of their third downs, up a few clicks from last year’s mark but still just 10th-best in the Big 12 and 69th nationally. (MU was never worse than third among Big 12 offenses converting on third down in 2006-08 and never worse than seventh nationally. Seventh in 2006, second in 2007 and fifth in 2008. That’s outstanding. Or, it was outstanding.) On the flip side, opponents have converted 41 percent of their third downs against MU, the worst rate in the Big 12.
● Only 14 teams are averaging more penalty yards per game than MU’s 71.5. The Tigers were flagged nine times on Saturday for another 91 yards. I don’t have the total count, but it seems like personal fouls are piling up. Nothing wrong with playing aggressively, but not at the expense of precious yardage.
