Question

If you believe the Yahoo! sports report that the Heisman trust is considering revoking Reggie Bush’s Heisman and will discuss it coming up, where do you stand on the issue of compensating intercollegiate athletes in a monetary fashion?

I know I am not whom you want to respond to this..

..but I believe that Reggie Bush cannot really be faulted to strongly here. I mean, maybe his actions since have been less than admirable. However, being a kid straight out of high school offered all those toys? We all would have taken it. That doesn’t diminish his performances on the field.

Saying that, rules are rules. and his trophy will/should be revoked. He was not complying with all NCAA regs when he won, so he cannot hold the trophy.

Also, since Memphis basketball is facing a similar situation, do you like Derrick Rose would’ve been stripped of his John R. Wooden award that season (had he not finished 2nd)?

"...some of the biggest roars you hear at Mizzou Arena these days are for steals, shot clock violations, and forcing opponents into timeouts in their own backcourt. Just as Anderson has crafted himself a team built on defensive intensity, he's built himself a fan base that echoes that same value system." - RPT

by tigr on Sep 7, 2010 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree about stripping his Heisman.

The Heisman is for the best player in NCAA D-1 football in a given year (or, more accurately, the best player on a championship contender or otherwise highly ranked team in a major conference that plays QB or RB in a given year). Reggie Bush WAS that. He was not cheating in the traditional sense – his performance wasn’t improved in an illegal manner – as far as we know. He won the trophy because he was better than everyone else. Accepting money didn’t make him more likely to win the trophy, and I can’t think of any way that it could (it’s not like his diet or workout regimen would have been changed by strict poverty).

However, when it comes to taking a title away from a team, I feel that you have to act decisively. Even if there is no evidence that USC had anything to do with Bush getting money, it’s not something that would be that difficult to imagine, and it’s very easy to see where that gives them a competitive advantage in winning a BCS Title.

To sum up – accepting illegal money doesn’t make individual success more likely, but it DOES make team success more likely. Therefore, individual awards shouldn’t be revoked if a player is cheating in that manner, but TEAM awards should be.

The fact that he would have been rule ineligible had the rule breaking been known at the time is irrelevant.

by Andy--01 on Sep 7, 2010 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree, sir.

I think you have to set a precedent that if you break the rules, you will be punished. Honestly, most of these kids (i believe) these days do not care that the university will be punished once they leave. If they know that they will be personally punished, I think these kids are less likely to accept these “benefits”.

I do not think that Vince Young should receive the award though, not one bit.

Question: #1) If Reggie got caught taking steriods, would you remove his trophy?

Question: #2) If he got caught in a situation similar to the Paige arena incident with Mizzou, would you remove his trophy?

"...some of the biggest roars you hear at Mizzou Arena these days are for steals, shot clock violations, and forcing opponents into timeouts in their own backcourt. Just as Anderson has crafted himself a team built on defensive intensity, he's built himself a fan base that echoes that same value system." - RPT

by tigr on Sep 7, 2010 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I can respect that

Question 1 – absolutely. He unquestionably gained a competitive advantage by doing that, therefore, the trophy should be removed (and, he broke an actual LAW, not just an NCAA rule).

Question 2 – I’m assuming you mean Paige’s academic cheating? Tougher question, but I would say that he would keep the trophy in that case. USC may have to revoke his degree (if he has one in this scenario), but the trophy is for on-field performance.

Against it

In an ideal world where every athlete in a given sport would be paid the same at every school of a certain level, I would still be against it. College football and basketball bring in lots of money on the backs of the student athletes, that is true. However, the short list of Athletic Departments that actually MAKE money illustrates where that money goes. It does not go to making coaches rich (while some are VERY rich, they are the minority – especially considering how short the average career is), it goes to providing athletic opportunities for students in other sports. The players are compensated fairly well, a free education, free food and free room is nothing to shake a stick at. In fact, considering the equivalent cost of what they’re getting for their talents, they’re making more than most minor league ball players.

That being said, I have no problem with ANY athlete attempting to take their talents to the pro circuit. If they’re college grads, college freshman, high school seniors or 10 year olds, if a pro team is willing to pay them for their athletic ability, more power to them. If I would have been offered a 6-figure salary at 18 to work for Dell, I sure as hell wouldn’t have wanted a union telling me I had to attend college for a specific amount of time.

However, if you don’t accept that free tuition/room/board is “fair”, there is no way that all colleges could afford to pay a “fair” wage. Texas may be able to pay all their football/basketball athletes $60,000/year, where Western Kentucky might only be able to pay $1000. Who would decide what is “fair”, and who would pay it for the schools that just can’t afford it? Would the NCAA pick up the slack, or would the schools be forced to drop to a lower division, until the cost of the players equaled their budget? Would Mizzou have to drop men’s swimming and diving to afford to field a football team – the team that finances all the other sports? There would HAVE to be regulation of this, otherwise there would be severe imbalance. That would not be right in any way.

Boise State

What do you make of the apparent end to America’s love affair with Boise State? We’ve enjoyed them putting a wrench in the BCS in prior years, but it seems that people would just like them to go away now.

by MUPete on Sep 7, 2010 8:03 PM CDT reply actions

As a Mizzou fan, I love Boise State.

We have seen in the past, that Mizzou is not the prettiest girl at the dance when it comes to invites to bowl games. Therefore, any factor that helps get a playoff into place – we should all sit back and enjoy.

However, I cheer for Boise State to beat the big boys like VA Tech, Oklahoma, Oregon, etc. – I cannot wait for the day that they are nipped in the butt by a small team that will bring their years of work down upon their heads. This ‘little team’ that I am hoping pops up might just by Dave C and the Wyoming team next week. (well, maybe not.. but I can hope). I know this sort of contradicts what I said above, but it’s what I do best.

by tigr on Sep 7, 2010 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't get the Boise hate at all

It’s not like Boise wouldn’t play any BCS-conference school that was willing to do a home-and-home with them, and they’re also pretty clearly willing to do one-off road games with BCS conference opponents (Va Tech this year, Ole Miss next year). So, if their schedule isn’t tough enough, the problem is that the BCS schools are wimps. And yes, frankly, I include Mizzou in that criticism.

And hey, if Boise goes 12-0 and gets to play for the title even though their schedule is weaker than some 12-1 BCS conference champ, it occurs to me that one way to solve that might be to set up a system where all the BCS conference winners plus two wild cards go into a sort of post-season quarterfinal situation so that the team that wins the title would truly have to prove it on the field. Of course, I imagine Boise would be all for that arrangement. BCS conferences—your thoughts?

Hell—I hope Boise wins the whole thing while a 1-loss Texas or Florida or Ohio State has to sit at home and watch it. Maybe then we’ll finally get some momentum toward a playoff.

by Professor Chaos on Sep 7, 2010 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

IMO
Hell—I hope Boise wins the whole thing while a 1-loss Texas or Florida or Ohio State has to sit at home and watch it. Maybe then we’ll finally get some momentum toward a playoff.

Personally, I would prefer that Boise State gets omitted because Ohio State & ‘Bama go undefeated. They then don’t get screwed by having to play TCU – instead play another undefeated team from a BCS Con like Texas, in another BCS Game. Then, Boise State rocks them by 30+ and the natty title goes to the last minute. The year Boise finally wins a title with the BCS in place is the year that all the BCS honks will say “see the system works”. (conveniently ignoring every other possible non-BCS team that had no chance to win it all)

Gabbert is probably the best pro-prospect QB Mizzou has ever had, but do you think he’s going to take the next step and match Daniel’s accomplishments as a college QB?

The change is funny

My first home game as a student was the loss to New Mexico. Much harder for me to get upset with anything from Mizzou considering that starting point. I’ve definitely noticed a change in the students over the years. There were some f you Blaines thrown around during the Nebraska game last year (though I can’t really blame anyone for being cranky during that one and that has nothing to do with what was happening on the field). I don’t think it’s the expectation to win as much as the pressure to win. When Mizzou lost games in 05 and 06 it didn’t really hurt, it was not a surprise most of the time. After 2007, there’s that wish to be back at that level because of how fun it was. I understand the change in tone recently, but it doesn’t surprise me at the same time. It comes with the territory.

by danman31 on Sep 7, 2010 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed, with some additional points.

However, from my experience I don’t think it’s the pressure that does this to fans. I mean, I have sat with many people that are fans of Oklahoma and Nebraksa – both programs that carry great fan bases. I don’t see the same pessimism within those fan bases, however, I believe Mizzou fans do have a small excuse for their actions.

Both of those fan bases have shining moments in their programs that they can all look back on and say “Yeah, that was the top. We got there”. Mizzou has not, so we are a very unsatisfied fan base in that sense.

Also, those fan bases know they are probably going to be good in the future for quite some time. I am not convinced that Mizzou has righted a ship that was sinking for decades. I think the fan base in general believes that we are one bad season away (or a major upset loss (see the angst that will form over McNeese State) from “GP going to _______”, “Recruiting takes a big hit”, etc. Therefore, a lot of Mizzou fans treat every game like a do or die.

Nubs/Gators/Sooners/Trojans/Buckeyes know that they are set if they go into a funk, a program’s prestige can do a lot to bolster a program back into the limelight (see Notre Dame).

[these thoughts might not make sense, at all]

Shameful to boo their band

Granted, we have a great core of fans who come out and support the team through thick and thin and enjoy their times at the games. I have grown pretty fond of the older generations and their atitude that they bring.

I just don’t understand why on earth such a large amount of our fans would boo the oppossing team’s band. That was utterly classless. I wish we wouldn’t boo the other team when they enter the field but it isn’t nearly as bad as boo’ing a marching band. Where in the hell is that kind of behavior coming from and why are soo many people partaking in it?

Let the Notre Dame talks begin, again.

They were close to fruition before Notre Dame wanted a Home & Neutral with Mizzou – then they stalled. Look for a possible one-year scheduling, but we’re talking down the road (2015ish).

Until then, I think playing Iowa would be a pretty good idea.

Are you concerned by the scheduling practices of major programs

(specifically, the reluctance to schedule top-tier competition)? If you are concerned by this, what would you do to provide incentive to Athletic Departments to schedule better non-conference opponents?

by Andy--01 on Sep 7, 2010 9:33 PM CDT reply actions

A playoff system . . .

. . . should make it unnecessary for teams to schedule a lineup of cupcakes in order to guarantee six wins for a bowl game.

If the economy continue to get worse, it may also help solve the problem by forcing schools to play more competitive games in order to fill the stands.

by countrycal on Sep 7, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

That depends on how the playoff system is setup

if it’s done through the BCS rankings, having as few losses as possible will still be important. If it’s strictly for conference champions, then you’re right – the non-con games will be seen more as a tune-up than for schedule padding.

by Andy--01 on Sep 8, 2010 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

In this week's TMQB

Greg brought up the issue that the one year at a time athletic scholarship tenders that schools give out could be tantamount to an anti-trust violation, and that the DoJ has opened an investigation. If the NCAA required schools to provide athletes with guaranteed four years of a % of school (I’m sure baseball and softball and the like would still give partials), how would that alter the landscape of college athletics as we know it?
