A loss to Buffs, an uninspired home win over Huskers...what's up with my formerly top 10 Mizzou hoopsters?
Tim Cowlishaw, via Twitter. Well, Tim, perhaps you noticed that Colorado pretty much shot the lights out, with its best player scoring a career high, and Mizzou still had a chance to win. Or maybe you noticed that Mizzou was pretty much in control of the entirety of last night's game until Nebraska scored some garbage time points. Or you at least noticed that Phil Pressey, one of the team's pace-setters and young guns, has been battling a banged-up hand.
Or, you know, maybe you haven't watched a Mizzou game since Illinois. Or Georgetown. Or 2009.
(Tim, we'd like to be friends. We really would. But you've got to meet us halfway here. Nothing's "up" with Mizzou. They're playing basketball.)

Come over to our side of the 7th grade mixer in the gym, Tim.
We’d love to hold you (far away) and dance awkwardly to “Time of My Life” (the original, not the newfangled Black Eyed Peas version).
But we still have our braces on, and our mom just MADE us get this perm. I promise come high school (March) and college (willing, April) we will have shed this guise, and become the hot back-seat partner you’re looking for. Trust us.

I was referencing a meme for humor. If you are wondering I failed at making this joke.
It was the, “I’m 12 and what is this?” meme adapted for Mizzou.

I don't think of the Colorado game as much of an anomoly.
Fact is, this team plays below average defense especially for a mike Anderson team. We give lots of wide open looks and when we play a team with a great scorer
like Freeman or burks, this is going to be a problem. Now obviously those guys also hit some ridiculous shots that were not
wide open, but people should start gettin used to the fact that we will see some
more crazy shooting games from other teams stars, and will likely lose a few games
because of it
Annoying You Since 1986
I don't think that's true, really.
I mean, I agree that the Colorado game wasn’t an anomaly. We’ve seen games like that.
That being said, we’ve also played absolutely spectacular defense a few times this year, so I’d characterize our defense as “inconsistent” more than “below average.” Even beyond that, I think we’re spoiled by what great perimeter defenders Tiller and Taylor were, although they obviously are surpassed by our current guys in some other ways.
Finally, guys like Freeman and Burks are going to have games like that at times, but something I’ve noticed is that Mike Anderson HATES to double team one guy specifically – he wants his defenders moving and switching and trapping. The result is that guys like Burks are going to put up some points if they’re playing well, but we’re also going to generate more steals. If you remember in the 2008-2009 season, we didn’t even double team Blake Griffin, and he was the uncontested best player in the country that year, and you may recall that we won that game handily. Part of the system, just like the constant full court press means we give up a few easy buckets in transition.
Bottom line: young guys are gonna make some mistakes, the system makes some tradeoffs, but this is still one hell of a basketball team, and I have no qualms asserting that Cowlishaw’s being an idiot on this one.
We all understand what being a Mizzou fan is like. That’s no excuse for being a douche.

For the month between Oregon and Colorado...
…Mizzou opponents shot like 23% on 3-pointers. And a lot of the opponents’ only strong trait was 3-point shooting. Colorado was the first hot-shooting game a Missouri opponent had in a long time. I agree that this is, at times, a bit of a lackluster defensive team compared to what we are used to seeing (because our standards are quite high in that regard), but Colorado was very, very much an anomaly. Since Oregon, Missouri’s D has risen about 150 spots in the 3PT% rankings even counting the CU game. (That said, Phil Pressey does worry me a bit. He’s going for too many steals and leaving his man a lot.)
I still think we have a size gap defensively that is being exposed by the Burks' of the world.
Who on our current team has the size and speed/quickness to defend a 6’6" player who can handle?
Kimmeh has the size but not the quicks for a Burks or a Taylor from Vande. Denmon and M. Pressey have the speed and quickness but not the size or strength to deal with a 6’6" player that can shoot over the top. That type of player is challenge for us (and many others) defensively. Freeman wasn’t that tall but is a brute at about 235.
"Anderson won't make substitutions. He'll change lines - Tiller, Taylor and English hit the bench while Denmon, Dixon and Paul hop the boards. Welcome to Hockey Night in Columbia. He won't take time outs. He'll take on fuel and tires. Welcome to the Hardwood 400." - Atch
He's just mad because someone in Columbia is probably dating his daughter...

A sassy Cowlishaw reply:
@rockmnation I know Pressey has been hurt. If you think they’re playing like a top 10 team…enjoy your fantasy world.
A) Thanks for the readership, Tim.
B) Duke lost last night to an unranked team. Does that mean they’re not playing like a top 10 team?
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."
--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
And beyond that -- not to go off on a rant, but here goes --
that fails to address my original point, which is that Cowlishaw clearly did not watch last night’s game. That’s fine; I don’t expect people to watch every sports event ever. But if you didn’t watch it, or you’re relying on glancing at the final score to tell you everything you need to know, don’t comment on it! It’s simple as that!

those weren’t necessarily garbage points nu got at the end. they did cut the lead to 4 and we all know anything can happen at that point. i’m sure it was because our guys had their heads in their pants, but that’s a different argument.

He's sooo much better than that dum*ass Carlton at the Dallas Morning News
who is an A&M lackey who basically declared to all that Mizzou “really” didn’t beat A&M in FB this year.
Frankly, while some perspective is lost on Cowilshaw (CU much improved and shot lights out, NU improved and grates us w pesky slowdown, injuries, etc.) many Mizzou fans are slightly worried, as well, especially with A&M up next and a brutal Jan. to come.
Wonder if Cowlishaw realizes
The same “mediocre” Colorado team we lost to just beat kSU on the road last night. I realize that kSU isn’t exactly what we thought they were going to be preseason, but they are still a quality bball team. Come end of the year I don’t think a road loss to Colorado is necessarily going to be the bad loss that people seem to think it is right now.

But it’s impossible to rank teams and then expect them to play like that all year (shocking!). Has Ohio State looked like the Number 2 team for the last few games? No. Does that mean the program is in danger of pissing away the rest of the season ala Texas last year? Hell no. Same with Duke. They’ll probably win their remaining games by 20 or more now.

I'm not sure I agree with the mentality
that giving up some easy buckets and rebounds is part of the system. Yes, it is a bi-product of how the Tigers play, but that may not necessarily be what CMA wants and what we are capable of doing in this system. I do believe we could get more rebounds and defend the paint better even in the fastest 40 minutes of basketball. Those are two of our problems, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be corrected while still using this system.

I don't think this guy has taken into account
the incorporation of 5 new players on our roster who are seeing lots of minutes and just played their first couple Division I conference games. It’s a big transition and we were bound to struggle a little bit..let’s just hope they’re on the same page when they go to college station
Now be nice to ol' Tim
Tim’s entitled to his opinion. He may subscribe to radical ideas such as if the other team keeps shooting the lights out, at some point it’s on the defense. He may also think that there’s no such thing as garbage-time points in a game in which Mizzou is never up by more than 12.
But you make a good argument, and Colorado’s beating KSU may make it a great argument. “They’re playing basketball.” We’re two games into this conference schedule, and noncon play can be a poor indicator, so it is hard to fully know what’s a good win/bad loss just yet. But Tim C. did insist that Columbia was the place to be during the weekend of the MU-San Diego State game, so I say let him carry on. It’s good for the show, anyway.
"They're playing basketball"
A truly underrated quote. Often times people are so quick to jump the gun on teams, without realizing that upsets, and occasional poor play on the road are in fact PART of basketball.
