#Mizzou announces that Blaine Gabbert is entering the 2011 NFL draft

So says Dave Matter. React accordingly. Oh, me? I'll be over here sobbing into a burlap doll with a tiny black No. 11 jersey on it and long flowing locks of blonde-ish hair.

I’ll miss having him here, and I wish he were staying, but I’ll always proudly say “Blaine Gabbert FROM….MIZZOU!” when I see him in the NFL.

We’ll reload at QB, like we have every single year under Pinkel. Not worried. At least we know what we have going into Spring ball, so the Spring just got way more interesting.

Someone had the idea, we wrote it, and stuff happened.

It didn’t destroy journalism (as the Mizzou Mafia list would have it), it wasn’t the best story we ever wrote, but people clearly loved the (stuff) out of it.

I would much rather write one story a month that has people that up in arms than another “city council tables everything” story every two weeks.

Of course both are important, but the first doesn’t cancel out the second.

Four years in a row we’ll put a guy in the 1st round. That’s really, REALLY, hard to do. The 2008-2011 1st rounds consist of 128 picks, and Missouri players will make up a minimum of 3% of those picks. Considering Missouri is 0.8% of Div 1 football, it’s a pretty tall order.

There certainly was a sense of entitlement from most of the private school kids I met at Mizzou

though, it wasn’t any different than the relatively wealthy public school kids I met.

On the whole, the people I met from SLU were very down to Earth (I still have several close friends whom I – or my wife – met at Mizzou who went to SLU), and the ones I met who went to DeSmet were (very nearly ALL of them) very obnoxious about the supposed superiority of the education they received and were very happy to talk very condescendingly about every other school and the students of said schools.

So… I don’t have a lot of love for DeSmet, and by extension, many public school kids. In my experience, they need to be knocked down several notches before they’re tolerable to be around. That’s not to say I don’t give them, or you – as the case may be – the benefit of the doubt. I’m just not surprised when they (more often than not) meet my low expectations.

it's what Pinkel (basically) promised when he got to Mizzou.

He said we’d always have a QB. We have. And with Franklin, Glaser, Gabbert the 2nd and Berkstresser in the bullpen I have full confidence. Glaser has been here since January of 2009. Franklin and G2 have been here since January of 2010. Is Berkstresser enrolling early, too? Either way, we have a QB in our system right now that knows our system, knows how we do things and will win the starting job. That QB still has Moe and Egnew to throw to, and they catch everything. He still has Moore, Lawrence and Josey to hand the ball to. He has one of the most experienced offensive lines in the country ready to block for him. He’s got Jerrell Jackson, he’s got Wes Kemp, and he’s got this young corps of receivers DYING to make a name for themselves. He’ll have the best kicker in the conference at his disposal. He’ll have a defense sporting one of the best front sevens in the conference (despite the impending departure of Aldon Smith).

Our next QB doesn’t have to be the man. He might be anyway, but he doesn’t have to be. That’s a really, really nice feeling.

With Bradford's and Ryan's immediate (and relative) success, though...

…one does have to figure that the often-too-high drafting of QBs will continue, however, especially considering how many of the league’s worst teams currently have bad (or worse, or in Cincinnati’s case, decrepit) QBs.

I do, however, feel that QB races in spring and summer ball make for a better team. I, for one, will state this: In Franklin We Trust.

Let the Franklin era begin with cries for Tyler Gabbert after Franklins first int.

All the best to Blaine, you don’t see a QB with his measurables in college that often, and certainly not at Mizzou. We’ve been lucky, dispite what some have thought.

Might be a good thing for the defense knowing they can’t rely on the Offense to bail them out. Fully expect Aldon to leave now, I love watching him play, but this does put us back into our comfortable “everyone doubts us” mode which has worked out so far.

They have demonstrated that even with the system, you can still go in the 1st round as a QB (assuming that’s where he’s going). That’s one less recruiting bullshit other coaches can use.

not really fair to say he didn't do anything with it.

He came in January of 2009, a year behind Blaine Gabbert. He wasn’t going to supplant Blaine Gabbert as Daniel’s replacement; nobody was. So he redshirted.

This year he lost a battle for the #2 spot with a very highly rated player in James Franklin. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Franklin seemed like a guy that would come in more prepared having played very successfully in very high level Texas HS football, those players typically are more prepared for college than others.

Glaser drew a lot of praise from Gabe DeArmond and Dave Matter in fall camp, and Tyler Gabbert seems to be stealing Gabe’s attention coming out of the bowl practices. But I think people are forgetting about Glaser and that he does have some skills and has been around the program. I’m just saying he’s yet another quality backup we have that may not win the starting spot but provides us EXCELLENT depth and could play if called upon.

what about the CBA?

Specifically, if it doesn’t get worked out? I don’t know all the in’s and out’s, but I thought there were scenarios re: the CBA that would have caused basically all the juniors to come back?

Surprised there appears to be a decision before that gets worked out.

The scenario was that all the CBA rumbling would scare players off from the draft this year.

But since it’s been rather quiet on that front the last few weeks, I guess draft-eligible players aren’t as worried about it as we hoped they’d be.

Me thinks Gabbert has been a much better college player than Freeman.

He has a much better supporting cast than Freeman had.

But yes, he’s also had more success. His footwork is infinitely better than Freeman’s was, and his arm is, honestly, probably a bit better (as amazing as that is to say) … though I do think Freeman probably had better pocket presence.

He has fantastic makeup, build, and obviously is a prodigious talent. More than that he is an absolute warrior. Honestly, every game I saw him play there were at least a few plays where you could flat out see his competitiveness and desire to win. He’s smart, apparently modest, and will be exposed to great coaching and mentorship at the next level (not that our staff wasn’t doing their job, but the offenses at Mizzou and the NFL are somewhat apples to oranges).

That a record for MU? Can chase hang on, and brad get old enough, for us to make it 4? I’m looking at you Mr. Franklin.

You can't be mad at Blaine.

He’ll go anywhere from 5th to 16th and the money he’ll receive will set him and his family up for life.

Thanks for the memories, Gabbert. I’ll always love you for burning Nebraska.

On one of the OKC TV stations, the sports dude, after going through a list of...

OU and OSU coaches who are leaving and players that may leave, finished by saying that Mizzou’s Blaine Gabbert was declaring for the NFL draft. Turned to the anchor and said, “And that’s good news for OU and OSU!”

Blaine will make a very good NFL QB. I wish he would stay for his senior season but what’s that stacked up against $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

It'd be more fun

to punch them in the taint. I totally agree with your assessment of how steaks should be prepared.

Good for him. I’m not a Gabbert hater, but he didn’t fit our system as well as I thought he would of. Good luck to you in the NFL, but boy a part of me is really glad he left. Our QB situation won’t be as bad now with all the talent we have there. I hope Franklin proves a lot of people wrong, and makes this decision Gabbert make a great one. Gabbert wouldn’t of helped us much next year if you think about it. Would you want more of his running around the pocket doing nothing but looking for a place to run? I wouldn’t… I want someone who will look down field and run around, play smart, run decent, and throw effectively. Franklin I believe will do all of this. Gabbert will be forgotten. Did he win us a Big 12 championship? Did he win us any bowl games? No he didn’t, so we shouldn’t miss him too much.

I'm content with his leaving.

I think its going to set us back next season though as I thought Mizzou would make a solid run for a conference title or at least a BCS at large bid. I think listening to the naysayers was irritating him. It showed in his post game interview after the OU win. It seems like he and Moe are both fixated on the idiot element minority of the fan base instead of focusing on the majority of people who really appreciate what they do for the school and the fans. I will welcome in a new era of Mizzou QB’ing with Franklin, Glaser or lil Gabbert. I have a high opinion of all three of them. Hopefully, we’ll give the young guys a running game to play along with too.

RE: Blaine

been reading this all day, couldn’t chime in.
1) Blaine – good for you. You played hell out of football while you were in the spotlight at M-I-Z (anyone?). In fact you played a good deal of your tenure (most of…last season) injured and never acted like a p**sy. go. Make money, eat asparagus and let announcers regularly say “56 yrard pass by Blaine Gabbert, 1st round pick from Missouri” until you retire for the 3rd time.
2) I’m totally thinking that “Denmoneys” could replace “Blaineys”
3) I really don’t wan’t to stop typing Rad©liff
