Can't say I disagree with any of the depth chart changes referenced below. I still say the defense was not the reason Mizzou lost on Saturday, but that doesn't mean Matt White looked good. He has struggled most of the season. I have no idea if Braylon Webb is any better, but I can understand feeling the need to find out. Meanwhile, Austin Wuebbels could make for yet another offensive line starter who will miss time to injury. I've made it clear over time that I'm not the biggest Wuebbels fan, but it does add to the "Holy crap, everybody got hurt" picture of 2011, eh?

    ● A few changes on the depth chart: Braylon Webb is listed as the new starter at free safety, ahead of Matt White, who has started all five games and ranks seventh on the team in tackles and shares the team lead with three deflections. Webb, a redshirt freshman, has played as a backup and on special teams.

    ● Right guard Austin Wuebbels is questionable for Saturday’s game with a sprained shoulder. Jack Meiners is listed as the starter. Wuebbels has started the last 31 games at right guard.

    ● Tailback De’Vion Moore (high ankle sprain) is back on the depth chart and listed third, behind Henry Josey and Kendial Lawrence. [...]

    ● There are a couple open competitions for starting positions this week, including kicker. When practice resumes Tuesday Grant Ressel will have to outperform backup Trey Barrow to maintain the job he’s held since the 2009 season.

If we follow aTm's timeline,

We’re probably a week or so away from “real” news on expansionpalooza.

So, they did (or are doing) their due diligence, which was something they alluded to last Yuesday.

Otherwise…..
Not shocked with some of the lineup shakeup. Poor Ressel, but he hasn’t been delivering. If nothing else, having competition might get some of those kicks to split the uprights. shrugs

So, are all these just desperate leaks by a dissenter? If so, I’m wondering what the motivation for this last one is. MU as gold-digger? I think that angle could backfire, instead pushing many fence-sitters into thinking, hey, there really is more green in the SEC.

Alternately, it could just be that discipline among the admins is that shabby. Maybe they need to end “media happy hour.”

if anything, I read that as positive for MU

But if Boise were in the same conference as Mizzou, I would make the 2,000 (or however much) mile trip once, just to watch a game on the “smurf turf”.

It is a beautiful area and I enjoyed my visit there.

I was there for the first round game against Indiana before the UCLA game. We drove up to Sun Valley and all around. It was pretty country.

Gabe said two things on 810 yesterday that I found very interesting

1) Under Pinkel, they put all the burden of winning on the QB. So when the QB struggles (like against OSU in ‘08) they lose. When the QB succeeds, they can beat anyone. The only time I ever really remember them leaning on a non-QB was the second half of 2009 with Alexander. They got him the ball a lot all over the field. Not even Maclin got that kind of attention. Josey doesn’t need 25 carries and 10 receptions every game, but so far this year they are simply failing to get the ball in his hands. Maybe they are afraid he’ll get injured… but not using him because you’re afraid of injury and losing him to injury get about the same results.

2) Gabe said this was posted on PowerMizzou, so I don’t know if it is completely accurate: in the last 49 games against ranked opponents on the road, Mizzou is 1-48. ONE FOR FORTY EIGHT. That’s not even embarrassing, that’s gone way beyond embarrassing and into freakishly bizarre. This goes back to something like 30 years of road futility, so it includes several head coaches. This team over the last 30 years has beaten #1 teams at home (and perhaps with some correct officiating…) but can seem to just get a couple of fluke wins against some #20 or #24 ranked team at their place. I can’t believe that stat.

by Mac6uffin on Oct 11, 2011 7:20 AM CDT reply actions

There's also quite a bit of timing involved.

2010 Texas A&M ended up ranked, as did 2008 Nebraska. Meanwhile, 2006 Texas Tech had been ranked a couple of weeks prior. It’s an awful tidbit, but there’s at least a bit of context involved…

by Bill C. on Oct 11, 2011 7:35 AM CDT up reply actions

which means that bowl games are not included

(which makes the whole exercise pretty dumb if the 1-48 “stat” is supposed to tell us something about mizzou’s preparation/coaching.)

You know, Gabe—God love him—is NOT having a good year thus far in my opinion. EXPANSIONAPALOOZA is kinda getting the best of him.

There, I said it.

he only knew that tidbit because a reader passed it on, and he did qualify the timing piece of it.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Oct 11, 2011 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

It is such a weird stat that I can only think it’s mostly a fluke with one win instead of six.

Then again, does Mizzou beat that aTm team at the end of last season instead of the beginning? We’ll never know. (We still kill the Nubs at anytime in 2008!)

by Mac6uffin on Oct 11, 2011 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

It's also not the biggest sample in the world

in the sense that in any one season you’re often talking about 1 game, maybe two. That’s one of those factoids that sounds more provocative than it is. Who is making a living off beating ranked teams at their place even 40% of the time? It’s gonna be one of the royalty programs, if anyone at all. The difference between 1 win and 3 wins or 5 in a 30 year span is really pretty meaningless.

Home field advantage, according to some econometric analysis with lots of Greek letters that I read in the Journal of Quantitative Sports Analysis (?) years ago, is the single best predictor of victory in college football.

It seems to me that your problem is your redzone offense

Your avg ypg is over 100 over what your opponents get. However, of your 20 red zone appearances, you’ve come away with 11 TDs. This means you HAVE to make field goals, but your kicker is 7/13 on those. The final key is penalties, where you average 71 ypg in penalties whereas your opponents average just over 40.

Those are the three areas that I see that need work. Your rushing offense is great, #14 in the nation. Your passing offense is top 50. Your ppg and oppg are in the upper echelons as well. Just gotta watch those flags and start getting it in the endzone once your inside the 20.

by SEC Supremacist on Oct 11, 2011 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah

I didn’t think Franklin had a terrible game. He made three shitty decisions, one of which resulted in an INT, but he didn’t get a lot of help from seniors committing stupid penalties and receivers dropping balls.
