The Trib (Dave Matter): Emptying the Notebook

James Franklin just can't get away from Chase Daniel and Blaine Gabbert. The two former quarterbacks were literally looming over Franklin's shoulder Saturday on Faurot Field as the video board featured taped messages from the two NFL QBs recorded a few weeks ago. On the field, Franklin is beginning to gain the same kind of respect his two predecessors earned while piloting the Tigers' spread offense. And it starts with making gutsy throws like his 39-yard touchdown to Michael Egnew, a downfield dart through heavy traffic.

"That was almost a perfect pass," Egnew said. "Perfect spiral, an easy catch. All I had to do was run. … There were a couple" defenders "who were close, but that's what was good with Gabbert and Daniel. They were confident in their arm. And I can see that in James right there. He was confident in this throw. That's what I like to see."

He still makes curious decisions with the ball, like his back-to-back interceptions into coverage in the second quarter. After that, though, Franklin completed his next 10 passes.

That was Columbia, Missouri 2008 – a significant fork in the road leading to the Cowboys' current stout status at No. 4 in the BCS Standings. OSU hadn't yet won any landmark games, especially on the road, yet shocked the No. 3 Tigers 28-23 that night on national TV to punctuate a 6-0 season start and elevate its football brand.

In retrospect, that breakthrough signaled OSU's rise as much as any as a signature win delivering believability not only across the country, but inside the Cowboys locker room. Fast forwarding back to today, the Pokes' spurs are well-earned and shiny, polished on victories claimed at once-dreaded locales like Austin and College Station and Lubbock; victories built on a tough win at Mizzou, where they pulled off clutch plays on offense and defense.

"Yeah, I think it was the starting point for us," said Weeden, a deep reserve on that team. "It just gradually went from there."

They need to create some sort of controversy/conflict.

Otherwise – snooze.

I never got the grudge b/w St. Louis & KC, but I spent the 80s in Dallas.

I started that piece & didn’t finish.

This x10000

All the stereotypes are crap.

The one that always riles me as a Kansas Citian is the “KC is a football town, STL a baseball one”. I couldn’t care less about the Chiefs if I tried, but am an incurable Royals tragic. But no, we all apparently worship the Chiefs and the Royals are an afterthought…

I also think the college sports mecca thing is overdone with KC. I know tons of folk who don’t care about college sports at all (or have a weak bandwagon likeing for the Beaker BB team), but love their pro sports.

by MizKC on Oct 17, 2011 7:33 AM CDT up reply actions

.

In the 70’s and 80’s, KC was very much a baseball town. The rivalry with the Yankees was one of the best in sports. But once Marty Schottenheimer came to town and the Royals began their 25 year slide, it became a football town. I’m still waiting to see what kind of a town we are when both are good at the same time.

Good Post.

…but just to be nitpicky, the Royals scored the winning run in that infamous ‘85 inning in with ONE out. Basically, the call didn’t change anything. And it didn’t stop the Royals from blowing out the cards in the next game, so blaming the ump for the Cards misfortunes in ‘85 is close to being a sourpuss ’03 Cubs fan and blaming Steve Bartman for the fact that Alex Gonzalez couldn’t field a grounder.

hm, WRNL thinks something very interesting.
None of this is too suprising to me. Dave Christensen is the best offensive line coach in the country (in my opinion), and Missouri typically is a very sound blocking team.

by Logan Hill on Oct 17, 2011 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I totally get that fans of other B12 schools are angry at Mizzou for potentially leaving

I can even find a small shred of understanding for those who blame these last couple years of realignmentgasm on Missouri (even though I think that’s wrong)

I take offense though to someone saying that we never fit in because we’re some pack of racist rabblerousers that “talk like southerns” anyway. I would hope that most people are above that kind of petty behavior.

Maybe I have too much faith in humanity.

by Logan Hill on Oct 17, 2011 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

My faith in humanity was lost long ago. But then again, I think the thought of humanity being rational and able to debate issues reasonably at some point in history is a myth. We’ve always been a collection of miserable jackasses.

After I read the DGB sweepstakes- Missouri, I read the DGB sweepstakes Alabama.

One thing that stuck out was pros/con section where it was a con as to the difficulty to get to ANY SEC game from Springfield, Mo. If that is a con against Alabama, how much will DGB and his family frown on Mizzou for going to the SEC, especially consider his father’s time frame on coaching on Fridays and then get to the closest direct flight? His father even threw in that tidbit about the availability of a direct flight to Austin…

by McZou on Oct 17, 2011 9:51 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Springfield has flights directly to Memphis and Atlanta

Gotta love it when your arch rival considers a 47-17 thrashing at home a moral victory.
It sounds absurd to talk about a football team taking a step forward on a night in which it allowed 610 yards and 47 points, a night in which it had one second-half first down and lost by 30 points, but the fact is Kansas University looked significantly better Saturday in a 47-17 loss to Oklahoma in Memorial Stadium.

For this night at least, with the nation’s No. 3 team in town, the Jayhawks did nothing to be mistaken for a punching bag, nothing to qualify as a punch line in a joke about ineptitude.

"Only thing I can say is, I love my defense, and I love this team, and we fought," senior inside linebacker Steven Johnson said. "After this game, I’m walking out of here with my head held high because we got a lot better."

In their defense...

It was 27-17 fairly late into the game. I don’t think the wheels fell off completely until the last 10-12 minutes.

And now I have to go wash my hands.

Once you report it

it’s public information. Mr. SEC sourced it properly. If DeArmond doesn’t want anybody who isn’t paying to talk about his reportage, then he should convene the PowerMIzzou club at an undisclosed location and force everyone to swear an oath of secrecy.

by Bivouac77 on Oct 17, 2011 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

The Big East has a strategy?

My Orange may have to reconsider leaving, then? Nah.

Seriously, if the whole “Big 12 will expand to 12 if Mizzou leaves, but will stay at 10 if they don’t” meme is true, then please go, and do it before the Big East raises any exit fees. That should nicely set off Louisville, WVU, and Cinci to the Big 12 and give enough votes to let everyone leave who’s leaving without absurd waiting periods or extortionist exit fees.
