It is all but official that Mizzou is heading to the SEC -- evidently basketball commit Negus Webster-Chan tweeted that he had talked to Frank Haith and was "excited" about the move ... then deleted that Tweet shortly thereafter -- but the Big 12 continues to work to make itself a better conference, and I assume that some folks would actually prefer to stay in the Big 12 that might soon exist. I was going to set up a poll about it but decided not to since, again, we appear to be past the point of no return. Still ... WVU, Notre Dame (for at least non-football sports) and a Big 12 Network? Would a poll increase tension among posters here?
Otherwise, it might be interesting to see what people think.
I’ve been cooling on the SEC move the last week myself.
The "Old" Big XII is dead.
The “New” Big XII will greatly increase travel costs. SEC, not so much.
"Every absurdity has a champion to defend it" Olivar Goldsmith
Depends. North Central & Western Mo will have more distance to travel
With KSU, ISU & ku within a few couple/few hours drive and Mizzou home games, the % of games that were a short trips made it nice and affordable with no work time losses for those of us that live in this area. There are more fans in Missouri then just CoMo, St Louis and south.

My point exactly.
We may both be right/wrong. I live in SEMO. KSU, kU, ISU, not so close for me. I guess we might need a population map of MIZZOU fans to determine the true answer.

Poll would only be relevant if restricted to MU fans (how could you do that?). Otherwise every non-MU fan who drifts through would vote "get out."

A poll could be interesting but I'm not sure if most of us as individuals know what we want.
As our likely departure for the SEC draws closer I seem to grow less excited about it, though no less determined to see it happen. This isn’t about doubting that Mizzou will succeed in the SEC but knowing that the rivalries I love will likely be coming to an end.
Now we are hearing about the additions on WVU, Cincy and even Boise State and while some may become excited by the prospect I meet the idea with a sense of “meh.” All along one of my arguments against the Big XII has been that Nebraska, Colorado and A&M have already left and the nostalgia that I feel can’t be soothed in a conference that is already drastically different from the one I actually want. The addition of new, addmitedly intriguing programs, still leaves me flat as the Big XII as I know it no longer exists. Even worse, those who have allegiance to the Big 6 and 8 will have even less to hang their hat on as the conference is diluted with new additions.
Notre Dame? My grandparents were very proud of their Irish Catholic heritage and Notre Dame symbolized that. From a young age I was encouraged to root for the golden domers but as an adult the thought of them being added to the Big XII leaves me flat. We already have one fanbase dedicated to self-indulgence and the last thing the Big XII needs is another group that sees itself as being somehow better than any other fanbase in the conference. This would go so far as to have the Irish continue their history of being independent in football but seeking shelter from a conference for their non-revenue sports.
I, like many others, suffer from the issue where my heart says stay and my head says go but I know that when Mizzou finally (hopefully) announces their departure from the Big XII I won’t spend a moment questioning the decision.

By allowing ND to join for non-football sports,
the Big 12 would be setting a precedent and paving the way for Texas to declare its football-only independence. Seems to me that the Big 12 is becoming the ideal home for any school that wants the benefits of a conference without the costs.

And maybe this means the Big 12 is going to be stable.
Because Texas and Notre Dame can play in a conference for non-revenue sports and keep most of their football money. And Kansas can keep that big Tier 3 basketball check. Maybe BYU comes and keeps its network money. KSU, ISU, Tech and Baylor are just happy to have a BCS home, never mind the competitive disadvantages. To me, the wildcard is OU. Will they put up with Texas/ND? Can they free themselves of OSU or find a suitable home for both of them? Or can OU work out a favorable deal for itself within the Big 12?
by IHatedHarpos on Oct 26, 2011 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
With ND
I’d be concerned with a new Nebraska-Texas dynamic coming. Notre Dame has as many options as Texas does and I can’t imagine they’ll be content with Texas dominating the conference. They certainly won’t have any more loyalty to the Big 8 teams than Nebraska did. Maybe it works, but that seems to me to just be repeating past mistakes.
Colorado's departure killed the Big 8
and Nebraska’s departure killed the Big 6, so the emotional ties are much less for me. One could argue that Okla and OSU immediately siding with the Texas schools on every Big 12 decision (and Colorado joining them sometimes) killed the Big 8 for me. Even after 15 years, I care nothing about the Texas members of the Big 12.
I’d rather be in totally new conference than in the distorted image of our former home.
The Big 12 died for me when Colorado and Nebraska left
I was never a fan of adding the Texas schools to the old Big 8, but it probably had to do that to survive. I feel no nostalgia one way or the other for A&M. But, the conference was over once it decided to let Texas start its own network.

Thanks, all.
I feel like I really managed to express my feelings about the Big XII in that post. Yes, money and security are major driving forces for my support for Mizzou to the SEC but a stable, recognizable Big XII with more equal distribution of money and power would trump those. In the end it is not paranoia, anger or opportunism that has settled my mind but the realiztion that I am nostalgic for what once was and what will never be again.
I am going to truly miss the Border War, the Unholy Alliance, the Missouri-Nebraska Bell, the Telephone Trophy and all the rest but so many of these things are either gone or endangered anyway. I am now trying to look forward to the new traditions that can be generated in the SEC and how that culture might help the Mizzou experience grow (for better and worse).
Would this mean that Notre Dame is getting a little nookie on the side with the Baylor women's basketball coach without the commitment of going steady?
I would think she would be against this after her widely publicized verbal against A&M.
This is the printed version of my
exact feeling on the issue.

The Big Leftover is more attractive than the SEC?
“One board member warned that "in 10 years this would be less an MU town and more of a KU town if this decision goes through."

I would think the nation’s premier conference would attract more fans than a team stuck in an increasingly non-local conference of leftovers.
KC already is more of a kU town than a MU town
at least if you look at the entire metro area. People are inherently bandwagon jumpers. Nobody is cheering for kU because of the Big 12. Same with Mizzou. If Mizzou goes on a run where they are elite in sports and kU slips, KC will be more of a MU town than a kU town – regardless of what conference it is in.

KC is a Chiefs town first
College BB second. IF Mizzou BB is doing well, it might get to 60/40 KU, but I think primarily it is 70/30 KU.
they do change
based totally on winning. In the 70s and 80s, the Royals were winning and this town loved them some Royals. Now they are, let’s say, less than a dominant team and the town’s allegiance has slightly shifted.
Either way, conference affiliation doesn’t sway the center, winning does.
I realize you weren’t disputing that in your post, but it illustrates my point above so I’m using it.
Busting Bill C since September 19, 2011 10:19 CST, 8:19 PDT.

I agree, but only because
IF the Royals were good and in the playoffs, it would be while the Chiefs are just starting their season, so the Royals season would be more important. Just like if the NFL playoffs were in April, I would imagine Kaufman would have a lot of red in it.

I love my coonhounds.
This one is my second. Like any breed they come with their own special set of quirks. Imagine basically the opposite end of the spectrum from a border collie (not in terms of intelligence [well, maybe] so much as in terms of giving a shit). When my coonhound does something bad (let’s say pull a sack of Sonic burgers off of the counter and take them to her treasure trove under the bed) I can tell because my border collie cringes and acts ashamed. It’s like a border collie has a conscience whereas a coonhound couldn’t care less. Not innately bad, just independent.
I will never be without a hound again. They can be great pets for the right family/situation. Much like your family having hounds at one time, my grandfather used to have them when I was too small to remember. Didn’t find that out until I got one myself after liking them for years. In the blood?
Nope,
but it would be fun. My first B&T had the nose for it, but my current hound is all catahoula in a B&T-looking package. She is much more interested in territory than scent. Though, to give her credit, she once jumped through a window screen and caught a raccoon who was eating out of a bird feeder. She didn’t really know what to do once she grabbed it, but it was definitely quite a feat.

I'm still trying to see...
How ND picks B12 over B10. I’m sure Delaney has told the golden domers they can write their own contract.
Could it be… please no… the lack of conference network, the existence of which might interfere with their NBC deal?
by galactahack on Oct 26, 2011 9:11 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
I think that the issue is two-fold.
The first is that NBC contract, as long as ND retains that they may mantain their independence in football. The second is that the B1G will not allow ND to retain that football independence and thus the Big XII’s flexibility is attractive to the golden domers.
Notre Dame
Am I right in thinking one of the supposed “benefits” to Mizzou of them half joining is we might get a football game against them as part of some kind of scheduling agreement?
Notre Dame’s football schedule is already complete through 2016 and already includes home and homes with Texas and Oklahoma.
Who wins out of that arrangement (hint, not us).
Just wondering
does anybody care that in the SEC, we might only play Alabama/LSU 1 time in 6 years? in fact they’re hybrid scheduling would allow those coveted matchups with the SEC west very rarely.
We still get to play Tenn, Georgia and Florida every year and those games should pack the stands no matter what our record is.
If we win the East every year, we get to play them every year
No reason to schedule an implied game, right?

Thank goodness, we don't have to go to the SEC anymore as the B12 is officially long-term fixed:
Why people have to play the ‘stability’ card, or why they have to go out and blame other schools is petty and pointless. The Big 12 is stable. For God’s sakes, we’ve got schools fighting to come here. Our revenue is competitive with other BCS conferences. To go out and perpetuate that this is about stability is intellectually dishonest.

ku loves Missouri as every parasite has to have a host.
Hmm
Schools from the collapsing Big East are fighting to come to the Big XII, all of which have effectively (or literally) been rejected by the ACC and SEC. Soren Petro is killing it on this point. UConn, the reigning bball national champs, are being abandoned. The idea that a rumor of Mizzou going to the Big Ten would lead in two years to the destruction of the Big East? Inconceivable. If you had outlined this scenario to a UConn grad five years ago, they would have laughed. But that’s the nature of what we’re dealing with. Seemingly small events spawn large and unanticipated consequences. And of course, as I keep pointing out, the BOTC folks thought the conference was stable last year.
Maybe the Big XII is stable now. Maybe West Virginia is as advertised and aren’t just a product of playing a Big East schedule. Maybe Texas and Oklahoma really are locked in for the long term. I hope so. But is it worth the risk? Given the historical problems in the Big XII, given the geographical realities of Mizzou, given the historical attitude of the Big Ten towards Mizzou, is it worth the risk to stay? That’s an easy calculation for K-State, not so much for Mizzou.

the six years only deal
is a huge red flag- I don’t see how anyone can see such a short timeframe as anything other than an assurance that OU/UT want to be free to look around in six years at the latest. Seems like instability is assured unless that timeframe changes. Sure that everyone who is insisting that the conference is stable is going to have no fear whatsoever that UT/OU will bolt when in 5 or so years if the TV contract $ projections don’t look very good.
People also seem to be missing that the ‘very strong handcuffs’ get thinner and thinner each year. I am pretty confident UT or OU would happily eat say two years of conf. revenue if they hate where they are 3-4 years from now.
I find it funny to hear some of the KU/KState folks talking about having the B12 tourney in Wichita or Des Moines- don’t you think the UT folks that are dreaming of trips to LA and San. Fran. for conf. games will love to be stuck in Witchita for a conference tourney?

There's no need to bag on TCU or WVU
They are good schools. But if the Big East is the Titanic, the SEC and ACC lifeboats are full. Bragging that schools are fighting to get into your conference in that situation is silly. If the SEC decided today to send an invite to WVU, WVU wouldn’t think twice about abandoning the Big XII. Same for Louisville. The Big XII is stable compared to the Big East, but compared to the other power conferences, the Big XII is clearly at the bottom of the totem pole. The conference has taken positive steps to increase stability, but stability isn’t some magic things that just appears when WVU joins. It has to be built over time by building bonds of trust between the conference members.

While I disagree, I'll try to be fair.
Those of us here are looking at the SEC and its percieved positives because we have had enough of the Big XII’s dysfunctional environment. We are willing to accept (or deny, depending upon your point of view) the possible negatives involved with a move to the SEC in favor of what we think will be a better environment for our beloved university.
From the perspective of K-State fans, and other Big XII members, they are going to focus on the positives of that relationship. While I will argue about why Mizzou should leave the Big XII I refuse to attack those still left here, whether it be by choice or by circumstance. Attacking any of the “Forgotten Five” (yes, even the Jayhawk(er)s) should be beneath us when it comes to conference affiliation.

West Virginia has been notified by the Big 12 Conference that its expansion process is on hold, a school source told ESPN’s Joe Schad on Wednesday.
The Big 12 is waiting on Missouri formally to withdraw from the conference and that there has been some late “hard lobbying” by Louisville for Big 12 inclusion, the source told Schad.
West Virginia had been told that the Big 12 was willing to announce it would be adding the Mountaineers regardless of the timing of the departure announcement of Missouri, but for now at least, that has changed, the source said.
Earlier Wednesday, the West Virginia Gazette reported that the Big 12 Board of Directors has what the newspaper called “put the brakes” on plans to expand. The report comes after West Virginia issued a Tuesday night statement saying no news conference had been scheduled to announce a move to the Big 12, and that a visit by Big 12 officials to the West Virginia campus, scheduled for Wednesday, also has been called off.
I'm guessing...
That the hold is because it would give us leverage to bolt early.

West Virginia’s move to the Big 12, thought to be a done deal on Tuesday, appears to be on hold — at least for the moment — Wednesday.
The West Virginia Gazette reports that the Big 12 Board of Directors has what the newspaper called “put the brakes” on plans to expand. If West Virginia was a university located in Missouri or Arkansas, it would have been at the top of our expansion list, even over TCU.
As it is, it’s only slightly puzzling from a geographic perspective and otherwise a strong upgrade from the middling, mediocre Meth Aggies.
You see, the Eers have actually been to Final Fours and BCS bowls. They’ve even WON BCS bowls. Wowzers.

I get not agreeing with the decision.
Especially when your school is either forced to stay or decides to stay. And once your school sets its course — either staying or leaving, it’s natural to gravitate toward facts/arguments that support that position. For example, if your school isn’t leaving, the fans want to believe the Big 12 is stable and improving. Since we’re leaving, we’re more likely to believe that nothing is really changing in the Big 12.
But the anger? I’m befuddled.

That, worse comes to worse, KU feels it has basketball to land it somewhere decent, while KSU has only whatever lifeline KU might offer? Not saying that’s accurate, or how it should be, but could that perception be driving the frenzy?
I do think that's a big contributing factor
At least for me, I feel like KU will ultimately be fine as long as Bill Self is in charge of the basketball program. Even if it’s all about money, KU bball is a huge money maker that I think almost any conference would be glad to have.
Plus, if these football schools are serious about seceding from the NCAA, all the money siphoned off from the basketball tournament starts going to the basketball programs instead, and basketball becomes much more valuable relative to football.
Well we have a meth problem but they have Fred Phelps and his wandering band of lunatics

"The power of the force has stopped you, you hosers."
.
It’s no surprise that Larry Scott, the new commissioner for the Pac-12 who came in and tripled TV revenue, isn’t as worried. He said his conference stopped at 12, rather than go to 16, to get the benefits of a more lucrative contract yet still minimize the impact on student athletes. As for the have-nots of the college system, he said that’s unavoidable.
“There is great disparity historically, just like a lot of things in life,” he said. “In the business world strong brand tends to get stronger.”
But these schools are non-profit educational institutions, as are the athletic conferences, whose primary job is to bring in money for their member schools. ESPN and other media partners are the only for-profit businesses in this rights conversation.
A lot will be lost as schools continue to realign. Traditional rivalries will disappear. Scott believes the ratings for college athletics are still undervalued, and if he’s right, then more consolidation is coming — and the money networks pay for rights will only grow.
“The fragmented nature of college sports is not a good way to maximize value,” he said. “Think about it: if you have one seller and lots of bidders, like the NFL, you can command a price. But if you have lots of sellers and fewer buyers, like college sports, you can’t get as much money.”
Texas resents being labeled as "not for profit."

I think that if this were the prelude to Mizzou announcing that they are staying in the Big XII that Deaton's tone would have been different yesterday.
Monday’s Big XII meeting was something of a final opportunity for the two sides to come to some type of agreement and by all accounts that didn’t happen. Instead we get an interview with Deaton on Tuesday that can be seen as another step towards the SEC.
I’ll offer up a different scenario (not that I am saying this is what is going on): Suppose that the Big XII is bound and determined that Mizzou is going to be here next year and Deaton has put forward the fact that Mizzou boosters have stepped forward to ensure that we are in the SEC next year. At that point the Big XII has problems, not only has Neinas been shown to be wrong but now there is the scheduling/TV issue to figure out and the WVU move doesn’t solve this for 2012.
Another, even simpler, scenario is that the Big XII is figuring out that WVU might not even be able to make the move for the 2013 season (it falls under that 27 month limit) and now they have real problems…unless the Big East folds. In that case the Big XII either is playing the waiting game or is going to have to get agressive and cause a Big East collapse or come up with something more creative.
What about how on Monday a B12 Network became a discussion point as well as a tempter with ND?
Would they be throwing that out to the press just to make it look like B12 is trying and MU unreasonable, or did it give time for pause?

I have a concern about this though.
I’m not so sure that the Big East WILL crumble. The Big East as a conference is more than just the football playing members. I would assume that the non-football universities would continue to play other sports in the Big East … regardless of what these other universities do. And if that’s the case, all exit stipulations (fees, waiting period) should hold. Am I looking too much into this, or does that make sense to anybody else?
I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!
No
It was once, and may be again (it certainly would make sense if it’s going to end up with a bunch of football-only members out west), but right now it’s not.
All I'm really trying to say is "Relax."
We don’t know what is going on and we have very little real chance of finding out. In the grand scheme of things we have no control and so the best thing we can do is try to relax and stop jumping to the worst case scenario.
Yes, this is difficult for Mizzou fans, we are always waiting for the Karmic Suckerpunch. The fact is that here we don’t know any facts and that we are getting worked up about WVU’s move being put on hold. Thus far I have heard absolutely no news that leads me to believe that Deaton was swayed by the news from Monday and, based on yesterday’s interview, have plenty of evidence that the anticipated move to the SEC is still moving forward.

I didn’t realize that Deaton is going to India for nine days starting next Tuesday. Which means 1 of 3 things:
A) We announce sometime in the next five days.
B) He isn’t a part of the announcement (which seems highly unlikely).
C) We have another two weeks of no real news and rampant speculation.

WVU Update
Team Speed Kills is reporting that the hold up on WVU is Louisville related. Essentially Kentuky Senator Mitch McConnell has been in contact with Boren and (former senator) and that is what this is all about.
You’ll love the commentor that blames this on Mizzou “playing both sides.” Yeesh, if there is anything that gives me pause about the SEC its some of their fans. Then I remind myself that every conference has their share of idiots.
