Oy ... the kid kept VERY weird hours yesterday and last night ... working on miniscule sleep ... thank goodness MIZZOUCURATORPALOOZA™ 2011 will distract from me having to generate any afternoon content for another day, huh?
MIZZOUEXPANSIONAPALOOZA™ 2011
Sometime after probably 5pm or 6pm this evening, we will either be hearing "We are proud members of the Big 12" or "Curators authorize Chancellor Deaton to pursue SEC" (only, in much more vague, official language). I know some people may be sick of this topic, but it so directly affects Mizzou's next five to 50 years that I don't think we have a choice but to let it take over the conversation when it wants to. This week's football game is huge, but only as it pertains to 2011. Hopefully today signifies the beginning of the MIZZOUEXPANSIONAPALOOZA™ 2011 end, one way or another.

didn't think too much about this earlier.
But I’d think he’d be excited to go to a conference where Mizzou is immediately one of the top two or three programs. Selfish Kimmeh.

Curators meeting is not for the purpose of realignment discussion
If you look at the BOC press release and agenda you’ll see some specific topics on the agenda, none of which is Conference Realignment.
Yes, that will likely be a part of the closed session listed on the agenda, but it’s not the sole focus. Employee retirement plan changes are a big deal (yes, I’m an employee).
The point is, this is still an academic institution first and foremost. The discussion on Conference affiliation should not be driven by fan emails or the changing balances of power in any given sport, but by larger concerns of the university. I hope the BOC is able to do their appointed jobs and not conduct themselves like message board crazies. The sky is not falling.

I was very much referring to the 4pm executive session, yes.
My wife works for the university, as did i until about two weeks ago, so I am very much attuned to the retirement plan changes (not a fan). But this is, after all, a site that is first and foremost about Mizzou athletics, so that’s the focus of the conversation here.

On a related tangent, the Toronto Leafs SBN site is "pensionplanpuppets"
mocking the perception by a lot of people (mostly columnists) that the Toronto Teachers Pension Plan (the majority owner of the team) doesn’t care about doing anything to make the team win so long as it continues being profitable.
But different since in Canada at least people have to attend hockey games.
It replenishes their life force, I’ve been told by Canadianas while in Toronto.
by TheHamburglar on Oct 4, 2011 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions
the Leafs always sell out. Always. With the most expensive seats in the NHL. To illustrate, your choices for single regular season tickets are to pay $55 (for the top layer of nosebleads) $95 (for the closer part of the nosebleads), or $165 to $416 to be in any of the lower bowls. And that’s not even including any of the private corporate boxes and suchlike. Keep in mind the Canadian dollar is now about at parity with the US dollars.
Anyway, the hackneyed argument goes “they will never improve the quality of the product on the ice as long as people keep paying to watch them lose”. It’s a lousy argument that falls apart on any closer amount of scrutiny, but that doesn’t slow the pundits down any.
So their fans are settling for mediocrity?

I do find it crazy that the Leafs are the best-supported franchise in hockey
and have had very little success the last decade. They deserve so much better.
The tragedy of the Leafs
is that they could be the NY Yankees of hockey, but instead have 40 years and counting of mostly futility (with a few bright spots to get hopes up a little before properly crushing them again).
Things are starting to very slowly begin to think about maybe looking better now that they finally have a competent GM again, but they’ve been starting from the bottom of a pretty deep hole.
Of course that's what you were referring to
My point is to demonstrate that sports are not (at least, should not) be the BOC’s prime focus or motivations in their discussions of what is best for MU, even when the question at hand is conference affiliation.
I don’t expect everyone to agree with my naive opinion.
http://www.SimmonsField.com
who was saying it should be the sole focus of the BOC?
I’m confused why you would go on the sport’s site to tell people that sport’s aren’t the only thing that the BOC should be considering.

The fans on the Mizzou sports board should be commenting more on employee pensions. To me, your point is analagous to the people on message boards who tell other fans “stop talking about realignment, we have K-State this weekend!”. I don’t think our comments influences the players on the field and am positive it won’t cause the BOC to ignore the pension issue.

The stability of the athletic department
Is surely a larger concern of the university. A better and more stable financial situation for our Athletic Department would ease any pressure the academic side of the house would feel. Even if we are one of the few universities whose ADs operated in the black in recent years, that’s not always guaranteed; with SEC money and stability, it would become more likely.
by CBonerfied on Oct 4, 2011 6:45 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
moreover, what implications does conference membership have for the non-athletic side of the university? I know the B1G has various symposia and scholarship funds that float around, and there are certain expectations for what it takes to get tenure, but what else?
The athletic department is the "front porch" of the university
To follow that analogy, the conference is perceived as the “neighborhood” in which the university sits and operates. As any realtor knows, it’s all about location, location, location. The BOC will need to decide how positioning the University of Missouri in the neighborhood of the SEC vs. the B1G vs. Big 12-ish will impact the perceptions of potential students, professors, academic organizations, research funding, alumni and donors.
http://www.SimmonsField.com
Ok, so there's a brand image angle
but is there more to it than that? Are there also more immediate and concrete implications?
Unless you're insinuating that Mizzou's academic perception
would be hurt by a move to the SEC (which is silly), I don’t see how conference affiliation affects the entire university, other than fiscally.
Other than the CIC in the Big Ten, which would be of great benefit to Mizzou, there’s no academic difference between the SEC and the Big 12.
And to clarify
Don’t get me wrong, the fiscal ramifications and stability of a conference such as the SEC DO affect the entire university positively, for the reasons I stated in the post that started this thread
A couple of questions for Bill.
First is the one that is site related. Is there any chance of us getting the ‘ticker’ box on the sidebar back? I assume this is an SBN decision but I miss having the opportunity to keep an eye on the latest topics on other blogs that I might not check on a regular basis.
More on topic is a question spawned by both EXPANSIONPALOOZA and Nebraska’s embarassment at Wisconnsin. What type of success have most teams exhibited in the short term after switching conferences? I would think that most teams have stumbled a bit after a move due to a number of factors but I’m not sure what the statistics really have to say.
And since I’m largely off topic anyway I’ll take a moment to tell you how much I’ve been enjoying the Morning Tailgate over at the Mothership.
1) I hadn't actually noticed it was gone. But yeah, totally an SBN decision.
Not sure where it went.
2) Really just depends on the team. Arkansas was in the SEC title game within four years, Penn State was kicking butt from basically the moment they entered the Big Ten, etc. Nebraska got whipped because they’re really only a decent team this year (and haven’t even come close to resembling a Top 10 team all season) and Wisconsin’s quite good.
3) Thanks! They’ve been fun to write (even though both of this week’s have been about the SEC … and if Mizzou’s curators move toward the SEC, it’ll be three days in a row tomorrow).

That epic troll Bob Fescoe actually said a few things good about Mizzou this morning and then ended his take with, “well they can enjoy the SEC and not winning any conference titles there, just like they did in the Big12”.
On a side note, my beaker wife really wanted a Mini cooper, so after shopping around we found one she liked and I totally jedi mind tricked her into getting on in Mizzou colors, check it out:

here's what I did
I bought tickets to MU-kU in football 2 years at arrowhead 2008 and 2009 (when fans still showed up) and got them in the kU student section. I wore a lot of gold and then plopped down. Remained moderately to myself and let the beakers harrass me. She then came to the conclusion that beaker football fans were d-bags and she couldn’t support a group like that.
She is convinced that basketball fans are different than footall fans, but it was realtively easy. The 2 years restraining myself in the midst of all that blue was rough.

Clever way to take one for the team. I applaud your innovativeness, whether or not it was set out on as an intentional strategy
it was an intentional strategy.
when we first met, she informed me that all kU fans were extremely nice people and all MU fans were extreme jerks. I informed her that it probably depended on what colors you wore around the respective fan bases.
Since this was literally our first conversation and I was basically done for the second I laid eyes on her, that line of thinking always stuck in my head. I always figured if I could make her fanbase look like jerks I could convert.
I knew basketball would be too difficult (especially since our basketball team was so bad at the time), so I focused on football. A lot of people look back at that Kerry Meir td and have awful thoughts. But walking out of that councourse and being berrated was really quite lucky for me.

in 2007, 08 and 09 they did
I got certainly got lucky in the timing of the whole plan.
One kid was wearing a 69 kU jersey with the name "Rock Chalk) on the back, receivers gloves, a head band and a championship wrestling belt. The belt was a weight lifting belt worn backwards so the fat part was on the front, he had pinned to it a bedazzled jayhawk that, wait for it, spun.
He was about 6 rows in front of us. He spotted me early. kU ran a nice little play off tackle on 1st down for about 12 yards. He came tearing up the stairs to get in my face and starts yelling about how did I like that first down. Little did he know that the umpire had thrown a flag for holding. I told him that I thought the 1st down suited me just fine.
That guy was a game changer in the conversion. I’m not sure I get the win without that guy.

No the new Fox deal doesn't start till next year so they can have multiple PPV games.
I’ve heard that MU is working on getting either another PPV game or the game on FCS.
Ive said this before, but it works so...
Sportshunter.eu / firstrowsports.tv both usually stream the games, just avoid the pop-ups or advertisements… they can be sneaky. Personally thertv.eu is my first choice… but they wouldn’t have it on ppv.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Oct 4, 2011 9:13 AM CDT reply actions
I mentioned it yesterday and I still feel that the new revenue deal is more of a ploy for expansion than a real play to keep Mizzou in the Big XII.
That and, as Bill and others pionted out, a “take it or leave it” statement from the conference to Mizzou.
the ploy for mizzou part is "stick around because we're doing what it takes to get good expansion teams"
for some value of “good”.
= sharing of 1st and 2nd tier rights is no big deal, a ruse
This link shows why Longhorn’s sudden conversion to nice guy on sharing 1st and 2nd tier rights is no big deal.
http://www.kansascity.com/2011/10/03/3185173/a-look-at-revenue-sharing-in-the.html
KU, on the strength of its basketball program, actually led the league in payouts. With equal sharing, it takes a $2 mill pay cut. KSU gets a pay increase of about $800,000.
Longhorn’s Network will allow it to leverage its qualitative association with the Big 12 into a quantitative monetary advantage on its 3rd tier rights, something that would not happen if we had a model along the lines of the B1G or Pac. So it gives up, maybe, $2 million a year by agreeing to "equality" on 1st and 2nd tier rights, but gains a windfall of $10 to $15 million a year with LHN. Sweet. They are good, aren’t they!
And we are being delusional if we think this agreement to assign rights for six years is a play toward "stability." The B1G did a twenty year assignment, and the PAC did an assignment until 2023. Now that is stability; evidence of a desire to build a conference brand. I’ve seen nothing similar from Longhorn, The six year assignment is just long enough to hold the conference together until Longhorn can go to the Pac, or be in a better position to be an independent.
Now, I realize there may be nothing anyone can do. The only thing that would work would be a clear indication that Sooner and Cowboy were in fact willing to align with the lesser five and draw up conference bylaws resolving all major issues and then telling Longhorn "sign, or go independent, now." I don’t trust Sooner to do that. They will never be completely willing to tell Longhorn to fuck off.
So again, it is the Hotel California Conference. But if I’m Mizzou, I go to the SEC, if it is available, in a heartbeat. I’m a KSU guy. I hope you stay. But I will understand if you bolt.

I like this point
Yes, it will certainly help out Baylor, TT, KSU, and ISU to get a bit more money. But the disparity between UT and the rest of the conference will still be enormous, and the measures to equalize basketball really screw over ku while really affecting no one else much.
Texas loses nothing from this deal, yet we’re supposed to applaud their generosity.
I've got to see how jayhawk fans react to this, since they are really the only ones impacted, in a socialism sort of way.

If they are going to keep Tier 3 football rights separate
it’s only fair that Tier 3 for EVERYTHING is separate. As we’ve heard so frequently from our Texas rulers/propaganda machines, the LHN is much more than a football network; they will air everything UT at all times. In that sense, it’s a Tier 3 EVERYTHING network. But they’re going to be able to take Tier 3 basketball away from individual schools while still airing their own? That’s preposterous.
but not surprising.
this “conference” will continue to make up the rules as they go along as long as texas is in it. i know things are never perfect no matter where you are, but they’d have to be better than this.

committees often have pretty structured conversations with a chair announcing what the topic will be and when it changes. It’s the only way to have a large group of people talk about things without having it devolving into an aimless rambling mess (and even then it still often does anyways).

Would the curators give Deaton the flexibility to “look into realignment”? Or would they just take it under their own initiative and vote to apply to the SEC?

how did this creature come about. I mean, pretty obvious where you would find a zombie t-rex (Finlnad) and wizard’s are common enough (although muggles don’t seem to noitce) by why is a wizard hooking up with a medical examiner? Where do they get the one man polka suit? Doesn’t make sense.

*Deep breath*
Harry Dresden is a PI in Chicago, who uses magic to solve his cases. He’s sometimes contracted by Chicago PD’s “Special Investigations” department (they deal with the weird cases), which is how he met Waldo Butters (said polka enthusiast). The Zombie T-Rex is based of the skeleton of “Sue” in the Field Museum. Waldo made the suit for himself because he competes in annual polka competitions.
I just started reading the Dresden books and I've made it to number four so far.
I can attest, that if you enjoy sci-fi fantasy, these books are as good as advertised.

they just built one on a street by my house that DOES NOT INTERSECT WITH ANYTHING. It’s just a roundabout, right in the middle of a perfectly ordinary two-lane road.
did anyone notice during the K-State - Baylor game the announcer from New York

In fairness
Kansans are surprised by paved roads and running water.
They frighten easily enough, but tend to come back in greater numbers.

Although really that should be Arizonans. They have more sand. Kansans would be more like Jawas, surely.

I assume they would give Deaton permission to act
With the understanding that unless something unexpected happens MU is gone.
I guess my question is
What’s the merit in asking Deaton to act as opposed to the board doing it themselves?
by SEC Supremacist on Oct 4, 2011 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions
I think Deaton can do more one-on-one
with less public exposure than the Board. He will go out and negotiate the deal (which i s porbably done anyway) and then bring it back to them on a yes-or-no.
Really, we are just following the A & M road map here.

The Curators
Govern the whole University of Missouri system, which includes 3 institutions apart from “Mizzou”.
They don’t want to make it look like they are micro-managing individual institutions within the system. That isn’t their job.
I also think the order of things matters
Just like A&M had to be clear they are approached the SEC. If the curators say, “We’re going to the SEC” then it looks like the SEC had a formal offer to a school that was actively in another conference.
If they give permission to Deaton to talk, and then MU asks to join, then there is less of a perception that the SEC poached a team.

dingdingding.
plus anyway the rules probably say something like “It’s the chancelor’s decision, but it has to be reviewed by the BOC”. So what they’d be saying, essentially, is “you are pre-cleared to make the deal, you don’t have to keep phoning us back to check when you work out more details, and we don’t have to meet again to check up on whatever you do decide.”
Pass the blame.

Somehow I think most of that was over fear that the Big XII would collapse and Baylor was sending a message.
But we are talking about Ken Starr here so at this point everyone in the BCS should probably expect litigation.
We're not even important enough to have our homecoming game on tv.

Wha?
sptwri Mike DeArmond
Curator Judith Haggard of Kennett is headed to the MU BOC meeting in St. Louis. Apparently Obama’s arrival in St. Louis messed up her flight
The President needs to authorize this?!
My parents were trying to fly out of Rome a few years ago, and got held up because president Bush was flying out, and they’d shut down an entire airport for security reasons.
Basically they don’t mess about when they’re moving presidents, and everyone else can just darn well find some other way to get where they’re going.
Yeah
Which is stupid. I remember being in London a few years ago and seeing (then) prime minister Gordon Brown’s convoy stuck in traffic. He had outriders and stuff but they just waited.
We are way too reverential about a glorified public servent in this country.
This is one that Canada and the UK have right. The prime minister is just a dude with a job. He’s not the embodiment of all that it Canadian or British or whatever, he’s just a really really high-level manager.
Sort of.
The Queen is the head of state (purely a symbolic role), the PM is the head of the government (i.e., of the executive), whereas in the US the preznit has both of those jobs.
The PM is like the US speaker of the house in that he or she is the leader of whichever party has the most seats at any given time (you don’t vote for a PM directly like you do for a president, only your “member of the house” equivalent). Parties in the house basically force all their members to vote however the party leaders want most of the time, so the PM then effectively ends up being the head of the executive AND the legislative branch.
There’s an old poli-sci 100 question that goes “who is more powerful: PM of Canada, or pres of the States”. It sounds silly, but it basically hinges on whether you’d rather have strong control of a small country, or limited control of a big one.
There is also, literally, a speaker of the house in the parliamentary system, but s/he doesn’t have a whole lot of power.
well, he DID publicly advocate for a playoff....
OMG WE’RE GOING TO THE B1G SO WE CAN BE IN THE SAME CONFERENCE WITH POTUS HOMESTATE SCHOOL (ILLINOIS)
