Kind of disappointed by the Next Iron Chef result last night, simply because I've begun to actually like the person who was eliminated. Meanwhile, I had not heard of Elizabeth Faulkner before the season began, but I'm thinking she could really win this thing. And ... wow, is Michael Chiarello delightfully, enjoyably arrogant.

That's a bummer for Fozzy!

Always tough to see an injury like that period (ahem Josey). To have an injury like that at the end of your senior year is not a good story. Best of luck, Dizzy!

The Trib's article about HCGP from the SEC coaches is a nice read.

No offense to HCGP but is that pic from hi driver’s license? That pic screams “FOREHEAD, must…have…visor!”

What that post about the Big12 vs. SEC ticket prices tells me

Is that, at Mizzou, I can spend $32 to sit on a rock and watch the game, whereas at a Georgia I may be allowed to sit in the parking lot.

Good call

I would be interested to see what seats are available for people with general admission tickets in the various stadiums. Beyond that, I wonder why the SEC has such a tighter grouping? I wonder what the correlation would be between that chart and revenue distributions…

by Damnatio Memoriae on Nov 14, 2011 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

Something has to be wrong with where they place us.

The amount shown is less than most of our general admission tickets. What about the other 60 thousand seats at a much higher price? Heck, I sit in the south endzone and my each of my season ticket packages were something like 229 bucks for 6 games, not counting the added handling fee or whatever that was they included above that.

Read the note at the bottom

The Ticket Price for each team is determined by averaging individual general admission tickets . The prices for student and/or reserved tickets are not included.

I think it had more to do with

The lack of people there at the end of the game and the way we won, than “beating Texas is business as usual.”

Compared to the signature wins I’ve seen that resulted in field rushing, there just weren’t that many people there when time expired, and there just wasn’t that palpable energy crackling in the air. There’s any number of reasons I can think of: the weather, the injury to Josey, the way the second half played out as a demonstration of offensive impotence on the part of both teams, the not-as-good-as-we’ve-gotten-used-to record coming into the game, etc. I would have much rather seen a packed house chanting S-E-C and rushing the field as time expired… maybe we’re saving it for our first big win in the SEC next season?

by Damnatio Memoriae on Nov 14, 2011 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

I like the idea of not rushing the field because we beat a top 20 team at home

I hope the students carry this tradition on. We beat the #1 team in the country? Go for it. Win a game to clinch the SEC East? Sure. But the fact was we beat a team, that was 6-2 and hadn’t beaten a quality opponent this year. Their best win is what? BYU? UCLA?

Rushing the filed to me would symbolize what most people bemoan when rankings come out each year, i.e. the name on the helmet is more important than the product on the field.

That's right Ice Man. I am dangerous

by drewder on Nov 14, 2011 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

It's really just in-state jealousy

In the 70’s and 80’s, the Royals were one of the top teams. Royals-Yankees was one of the great rivalries. The 85 Series was a nice capstone win over an in-state rival, but almost immediately after that, the Royals fell into a 25 year funk. For the Cards to still be successful, particularly with a coach who did so much damage to the Royals when he was with the A’s, it kind of sticks in your throat. But the real kicker for me was when the Rams came to town. After the football Cards left, there was a bit of smug satisfaction in KC. We were the football town, they were the baseball town. Their whine-and0cheese fans didn’t help much because they acted like Beakers when the Rams sucked. “Oh, we don’t care, we’re just counting down the days until spring training starts”. But then the Rams won the Super Bowl and all of a sudden it was “OMFG GREATEST SPORTS CITY IN THE WORLD” That the Chiefs never managed to get over the hump in the 90’s added some extra bile to that.

As a fair-weather Rams fan

who fell off of the full-time fan wagon when they fired Martz (love him or hate him, he makes a team interesting to follow), I agree with the assessment on St. Louis football fans.

And the “greatest sports city in the world” thing was so 2000. It seemed to make sense at the time, and it really didn’t make sense at all. St. Louisans are just fans, just like Kansas Citians. Hell, look at Pittsburgh; everyone thinks they’re such great fans because of the Steelers and Penguins, but the Pirates can’t attract 20K on a regular basis. People everywhere support winners. (Maybe that’s why the media consistently rates Boston as the best sports city, because all of their douchy teams win and are thus well supported.)

by CBonerfied on Nov 14, 2011 1:43 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I am a fan of both the Cardinals and Chiefs.

I am a life-long Cardinals (baseball) fan. I remember watching the football Cardinals with my dad before they left for Arizona (although I was too young to really know what was going on). When I was old enough to really start paying attention to pro football, the Bears were good, but I couldn’t make myself into a Bears fan (I grew up in Illinois). I started following the Chiefs and remain a Chiefs fan (which isn’t easy these days). When the Rams came to StL, many friends and family started cheering for them, but I didn’t. I am still a baseball Cardinals fan, a Chiefs fan, and obviously a Mizzou fan. I don’t feel any hatred toward the Royals or their fans. I get the impression that would maybe be different if I actually was from StL, but I guess I don’t really understand the hatred.

by cchstove on Nov 14, 2011 1:50 PM CST up reply actions

by CBonerfied on Nov 14, 2011 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

I wasn't there, but good for those fans

One State, One Mizzou is great for humanitarian efforts, but it doesn’t apply to stuff like sports teams. There’s thousands of Mizzou fans who don’t care about MLB, don’t root for the Cardinals, or even actively dislike the Cardinals. Trotting out Freese is a pretty flimsy way to say “Yay Cardinals” on that platform, much like they did over the PA in 2006.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Nov 14, 2011 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

Honestly

I don’t tend to pay a great deal of attention when they trot people out between quarters or during TV time outs (unless it’s military/veteran related), but I don’t ever recall them bringing someone like that out who really had no connection to Mizzou besides playing a professional sports for a team in Missouri. If it hadn’t been the Rangers the Cards beat, or Texas that we were playing, I don’t think that happens.

If I'm not mistaken, it was the first home game since the World Series ended.

So it may have been coincidence. Although I’m good with Mizzou taking another (although slight) swipe at Texas if it was planned. I just have my doubts that our administration/athletic department thought about it more than saying “oh, yeah…the Texas game…even better” after they decided to invite him.

Hahaha!

That’s what my dad said. Many of the alumni, being from StL and thus Cards fans, are great baseball fans (good spectators, only good for cheering when good plays happen or once in the bottom of the ninth) but terrible football fans. In KC, regardless of how much we suck currently, football games involve two things:
 1) Standing. The whole game.
 2) Yelling. Loud. When your team plays defense.
It’s pretty simple. And the fact is that Mizzou fans, especially the alumni, do neither. And I blame StL/the Cardinals.

For a 60 year old

I think long bouts of standing and yelling takes a much more significant toll on someone than it does on a younger man.

I think it is a much more dramatic position to suggest to a guy who rooted for Mizzou back in the days when the team was abysmal that he doesn’t deserve to be in the stands (by your standards) because he doesn’t have the same energy as he once did and if he still wants to watch his school play, he should either by a suite or watch the game at home.

Yes, but

“Irate Season Ticket Holder” is as annoying as “Fire Yost Guy”. ISTH doesn’t really care if something really good happened on the field, he will still scream at you to sit down and be quiet and if you don’t he’ll call the usher and have you kicked out because he’s donated a significant amount of money to the University. If fans are standing up in front of you the entire time, that’s one thing, but if you’re just a killjoy who wants everyone to sit on their hands the entire time, then I agree that they should just stay home and watch the game on tv. People attend the games in person for a reason, and that’s because you get an experience that you can’t get at home. It’s about interacting with the crowd and the teams and being part of something that’s bigger than you.

Obviously there's a middle ground

No one likes ISTHs, I agree with that.

The real issue with both groups (the rebel rousing youngsters and the get-off-my-lawn ISTHs) is that they both feel that everyone should cheer their way.

as someone who works as an usher at Mizzou football games

no one would ever be kicked out for simply standing up and cheering. We’ve been told both by our bosses and MU higher ups that people can come stand, sit, cheer, or not, it’s a football game they might not like people standing but it’s a football game so if it bothers you the tv in the living room works just as well

I respectfully disagree

I think the older fans (dont accuse me of age-ism) have a lot to do with people not standing. I saw 2 fans, one MU and one from Texas standing for the whole game about 70 rows up. The 60+ year old man behind them nearly fought them about 3 times during the first half because they were blocking his view.

I also don’t understand how people can hate either the Royals or the Cardinals just because they are from the opposite side of the state. I’m a Cards’ fan first, but the Royals would be my 2nd favorite team.

by MUStL on Nov 14, 2011 12:59 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I'd be more likely...

To believe it’s the Rams fault, but not the Cardinals. Blaming the Cards for football behavior sounds suspiciously close to blaming them for the housing downturn.

by galactahack on Nov 14, 2011 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

Agree 100%

Attending a Rams game is horrible. Haven’t been in years and don’t plan to again. I am a huge Cards fan and live on the west side of the state now. Never realized the bitterness that many Royals fans have for Cardinals. Cards fans could really care less about the Royals. Up until this postseason I wanted the Royals to do well as long as it wasn’t at the expense of the Cards. That has changed after living on the west side of the state and listening to Royals fans. I have lost a lot of respect for people I have gotten to know over the past couple of years and now on this site based on the inaccurate portrayals of Card fans that only come out when they have great success.

I'm with you

but don’t lump everyone in the same boat. Most of us StL Mizzou folks just want less of a divide over all issues that aren’t Mizzou related.

by CBonerfied on Nov 14, 2011 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

Okay, explain this to me.

Seiously, I have no idea why people think standing for three hours is some great feat of fandom. I paid for a seat, I have a bad back and standing in one place is tortuous but somehow I am a ‘bad’ fan because I want to sit?

The alumni side needs to learn to be loud on every defensive down, not just third. Somehow I don’t think you can blame StL fans for this since approximately half the alumni should be from KC. Or are you saying that KC fans simply don’t come to the games?

Can we please halt the anti-Cards talk before the holy war starts? I’m not pointing any fingers at anyone here but I didn’t develop a hatred of the Royals until I attended Mizzou, at age 30, and had to deal with their fans on the rare days I would wear a Cardinals hat.

by Spider_Monkey on Nov 14, 2011 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I am saying.

I-70 west was just a busy with most cars flying their tiger tails. I know a lot of these fans were simply filling seats (and complaining about Pinkel, Yost, Steck, etc) for far too much of the game. The issue is blaming it on one population group or another.

One thing I do know is that the quiet is infectious. I normally try to sit on the student side when I can make a game but for Texas we were with the alumni. Most of the first quarter I stood and yelled but when you are one of two people in the entire section being a ‘good’ fan you tend to sit down, shut up and stop annoying the regulars.

The point is that St. Louisans know how to be good baseball fans. (Understandably, because of their success)

But they don’t know how to be good football fans. And because I’ve been spoiled by a different football culture in KC, we hardly have a baseball franchise since Glass came to town, I’m consistently disappointed in the way Mizzou fans choose to support the team.

I’ve been to over half of the old Big 12 stadiums (K-State, kU, OK-State, Nebraska, ISU, TAMU, TX) and have had season tickets since 2002. We hardly have a home-field advantage as far as crowd noise goes, and that might be due to stadium design (the open horseshoe doesn’t help contain much) but I KNOW we can do better. And I’m using StL football fans as the scapegoat. Which isn’t fair. But whatever, I’m frustrated.

It’d be nice if people would do what you’re supposed to do at football games. Sit and be quiet during offense. Stand and cheer during defense. It’s not rocket science.

Blaming StL people for the lack of noise isn't something that's realistic.

It just allows me to justify my perception that the stadium sounded loudest when Freese stepped on the field for 5 seconds. Which sucks because, the way our defense played on Saturday, it would’ve been nice if all the Cards fans that cheered on their hometown hero could have strained their vocals a bit more for Steckel’s D.

And I’m not a fan of StL as a whole. Check my team allegiances. :)

Well, justify away

but there is a difference between consistent 3.5 hour cheering (it’s truly exhausting, even if I enjoy doing it from time to time) and cheering for one person for 30 seconds.

I guarantee that there were plenty of StL Mizzou fans at Homecoming vs. OU last year. Do you feel safe in saying that they didn’t do anything to make it the most electric football environment Mizzou’s ever had on campus?

It’s all situation dependent. I’ll tell you how I felt watching the game on TV Saturday: very excited to see the Tigers win, increasingly excited in the second half as the D really turned up the pressure, but yet not the kind of “jump up and down” excited as I was watching last year’s OU game.

Every game has its own feel, its own tension. Particularly due to the fact that neither team really got its offense clicking (and highly due to the fact that each team saw a devastating injury that will affect the lives of those two RBs forever), it would be hard to scream for the entire game.

But you can continue to project all the faults of our fanbase onto one specific group of people.

Booing anyone that's just there to be recognized, really.

I can see the Texas fans doing; that’s understandable and even a little funny, since they were on the receiving end of his MVP performance, and as I noted above, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an intentional slight. If you’re not a Cards fan, that’s cool, don’t clap. But going out of your way to boo a guy that was invited and showed up just to be recognized for his accomplishments doesn’t show a whole lot of class, in my opinion. For the record, if the Royals had won the series, I imagine their MVP would have been recognized the same way.

Of course, I subscribe to the whole “clap for your opponent because they’re there to compete just like you are, and the better they are the better you look in victory” school of thought, and I can only think of a handful of times I think booing is acceptable (particularly bad calls by the refs, a coach running up the score to rub it in, etc.) so take my opinion with a few bags of rock salt.

Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno’s name has been removed from the Big Ten’s football championship trophy, league commissioner Jim Delany said Monday.

The league announced in light of the series of events that have recently unfolded at Penn State, including grand jury indictments, an ongoing grand jury investigation, a U.S. Department of Education investigation, the Board of Trustees’ dismissal of Paterno and the Board of Trustees’ appointment of a Special Investigation Committee, it would remove Paterno’s name from the championship trophy.

The trophy will be awarded at the Big Ten’s inaugural football championship game Dec. 3 in Indianapolis.

"We believe that it would be inappropriate to keep Joe Paterno’s name on the trophy at this time," Delany said. "The trophy and its namesake are intended to be celebratory and aspirational, not controversial. We believe that it’s important to keep the focus on the players and the teams that will be competing in the inaugural championship game."

The trophy to be presented in Indianapolis next month will now be called the “Stagg Championship Trophy,” named after Amos Alonzo Stagg, who coached football at the University of Chicago, a founding member of the Big Ten, from 1892-1932. Stagg compiled a 199-94-22 record while the University of Chicago was a member of the Big Ten, including national championships in 1905 and 1913.
