Our football conference games are going to be on TV every week!
Also, I wonder what snake is thinking right now? I hope Bowers and Pressey and Dixon and Kadeem kick his ass.
And we get this great song too.
I just hope we keep the rivalry with kansas going. It’d be sad to never play them again.
About damn time we become a middle of the road school again fml.

Yeah, the SEC is tough.
How can we beat teams like Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt (they go 6-6 in their great years!), Mississippi (when’s the last time we beat them?), or South Carolina (they’re only loss is to the powerhouse Auburn), or Auburn (they’re so good they came back against Utah State!), or Texas A&M (they’ve kicked our ass in recent years)? Damn, we’re going to suck.
/sarcasm
It’s not as bad as people think. Our down years will be a lot like this season. This year the Big 12 is about as tough as the SEC most years. So instead of going 8-5 in a rebuilding year like 2009, we’re going to have 6-6 or 7-5 seasons. Not that big a deal. And when we’re good, we’ll win games.
I'm holding you to this.
When Mizzou goes 6-6, you’re not allowed to complain.

I just know Missouri fans.
Trust me: I know Missouri fans. And 6-6 is 6-6, and when it happens (not saying it’s going to happen every year, but it will happen because that’s the way football go), we’ll get things like last night’s Baylor rant thread.
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."
--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
Rant threads are good.
People who want to blow off some steam get to do that, and if you don’t like complaining then stay away.
I was in college from 1999 to 2003
it’s nice to actually expect something nowadays. I think the 30-40 year old alumni demographic will not get spoiled by the last six or seven seasons. The younger group, however…
I'm going to complain every time I feel like we should win and don't.
If we lose to clearly superior teams, I’m not going to whine. But if we have games like this year where we have a chance to win and blow it, then I feel like I have a right to complain.
Nope.
we’re going to have 6-6 or 7-5 seasons. Not that big a deal.
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."
--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
Basically what I meant was that we're going to have 6-6 years instead of 8-4 years.
Having a 6-6 record with a tough record compared to 8-4 with an easy schedule like 2009 isn’t that big a deal. But that doesn’t mean I want 6-6 years. If we have years like this when we have a chance to win a lot more than we do, then I’m going to complain.
I agree with your sentiments completely
but I agree with Tepper too. You’ve got to walk the walk if this is what you truly believe.
I remember all those years we dominated the Big 12.
Oh, wait.

No doubt will make it there eventually, just depends on which division and the schedule now
Probably the East,
since A&M will most certainly go to the West. But I’m sure the Aggies will still be on your schedule every year, just as our biggest rival from the West, Auburn, is always on UGA’s schedule.

I know we've been expecting this for months now
and talking about realignment scenarios for over a year. But step back for a second. Pull up the article again.
"The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference are pleased to welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC," said Dr. Bernie Machen, President of the SEC Presidents and Chancellors and president of the University of Florida.
Mizzou is an SEC school now. Officially. We’re not in the Big 12 anymore. For as much time as I’ve spent basically obsessing about this topic…its still hitting me a little harder than I expected it to. Not in a bad way. Just wow. Its bizarre.

Kind of exciting though, don't you think?
Weird, but it’s going to be fun playing on CBS sometimes and having a schedule against brand new teams that we never played before.
Oh w/o a doubt.
The official statement hasn’t been posted an hour now and Mrs. MizzouRah04 and I are already starting to look forward to the epic road trips that await.
I just mean … it hit me like WOW … we’re not in the Big XII anymore. I’m not one that fears change, but it’s just going to take some getting used to.

The Big XII has no defined wait period
So they couldn’t stop us from leaving, it would just be how much we have to pay to go.
The lawsuits would get nasty if WVU can’t come, because if the B12 is stuck at 9 teams next year it will cost them a TON of money from TV contracts getting ripped up on them. And they’d be trying to take Mizzou to court claiming that our breaking an agreement is the proximate cause of that loss of $$$, and would try to make us pay it. They’d TRY anyway.
How much of the move is about the money, and how much is about stability?
I understand that we’re going to make some more money, but I thought the biggest reason was that we didn’t want to pass on this opportunity to jump and then get left out of a big conference if (when) the Big 12 blows up?
I think stability
If the Big XII holds together, the new media deal would be a windfall. But then again, so was the last one until all of the other power conferences got bigger windfalls. And without any possibility of a Big XII Network, there’s almost no chance that Mizzou would be able to compete ten, twenty years down the road when border schools are bringing in $20-30 million a year from their networks.
Overall:
I understand why Mizzou is doing this. The stability is very appealing, and the SEC’s television contract is second to none. But I’m sad that my alma mater chose to chase more dollars by forgoing some of its roots. Again, I understand why they’re doing it, but I also reserve the right to be sad about it.

Take the opportunity to leave while we can.
If the Big 12 dissolves, there might not be a big conference to go to. There’s a chance the Big 12 is stable now, but there’s no guarantee. Gotta make sure we stay in a big conference and don’t end up with Baylor in the Mountain West.
And why is it so important for Mizzou to stay in a big conference?
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."
--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
So we can have money to keep the athletic department going.
Money is the reason, but it’s not like we’re just leaving and saying “Hey we can make some extra dough in this new conference, so screw you tradition.” Nobody wants to be in the MVC-CUSA 517-team conference where we can’t afford our coaches.
Exactly.
This whole thing is driven by money. I’m not saying that’s a good, bad or indifferent thing, since that’s the way of the college football landscape, but the buzzwords that Gummy espoused below are simply frilly ways of saying “yeah, we’re going to have cash flow for an extended period of time.”
College football is a business, and I guess the reason I’m sad is that I’d hoped Mizzou didn’t view it that way. Which, in hindsight, was incredibly naive of me.
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."
--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
I mean, that's true to a certain extent - and I don't mean to make you rehash arguments you've made for the last several months, Greg
but I still think Mizzou’s situation is more complex than that. If Mizzou had reasonable assurance that the Big12 was going to remain a viable conference – beyond the 1st- and 2nd-tier revenue sharing – I don’t know if we make this move. Or maybe we do, and it really is about the check-book. I wouldn’t doubt it, but I’m also pessimistic and hate money in general. But the conference commitment that expires at the same time that our TV contract expires just looks like a situation where we might end up losing both tradition AND money. They decided not to gamble on that.
Again: I get it.
I really, really do. Just because I’m not jumping up and down about this doesn’t mean I’m dumb. I get it, and it’s probably the right move for Mizzou. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make me sad.
Also, if you hate money, I’ll take it.
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."

I hate it because I don't have it.
Also, for what it’s worth, I think your voice has been invaluable for this community throughout the expansionapalooza process. Looking forward to all of the hurt this absurd drama has caused to be healed game by game.
To Reiterate...
Money is just a means to quality football. It’s not about money to buy a yacht, or to send out giant dividend checks. It’s for facilities, coaching staffs, etc.
To say we’re just doing it for money is the same is saying we’re just doing it to play better football. To decry the first is to decry the second.
So we're better.
Big quality conference means better recruits, more money for quality coaching and facilities. The money is only means to the quality.
The whole point of all of it just to see Mizzou play the best football it can play.
Could we have fun being a lower quality school in a lesser conference? Sure. But I prefer being a higher quality school in a more prestigious conference.
Bottom line, I care more about the quality of football we play than I do about playing traditional rivals. At least, given the rivals available, discounted for possible Big 12 collapse / deterioration.
Also, irrespective of money, it means we’re playing bigger games against better teams on a bigger stage with more fans watching. Why do we always want a better bowl game, even though the payouts were split evenly between all teams in any bowl?
As an amateur athlete, why are you more excited to go to the Olympics than the Commonwealth games?
I mean, you can deride that as pride or chasing fame and recognition, and to some extent that’s true, but it’s also about the rush of being in a big spectacle, of being a part of a huge event.
This is what you'll hear in six hours
Stability, trust, vision, quality, commitment
On the list of things the University of Missouri has to worry about
Affiliation in a strong, prosperous, stable athletic conference can be crossed off and never worried about again.
If you’re the Mizzou chancellor and you can get that one off your to-do list, you take advantage of the opportunity, especially given the uncertainty of the alternative.
I understand your position
However, I wish we could go back in time to see how Arkansas felt about leaving their roots in the SWC to join the SEC or how South Carolina felt about abandoning the conference they helped start (ACC) to join the back up with the SEC. I imagine there were similar feelings amongst the fan bases for both teams (specifically the Arkansas fan base) but I bet both fan bases do not regret the decision now.

People do this all the time. They turn down jobs that pay more to stay nearer their family, they forgo higher paying industries to do things they love…
But this is NOT all about money. Sure money figures prominently, but it’s also about the size of the stage, and the comfort that comes from being in a conference where you’re at least somewhat dealt with in a fair and reasonable manner, rather than dictated to by a few big money power players.
It’s like we’re leaving the job we had since leaving college because the new boss has become borderline abusive, and we’d rather work in a bigger, but more egalitarian firm. Sad, but it’s not just raw ambition.
I agree with this myself...
I don’t LIKE this alot but I do understand…Looks like (unless the baseball team tanks) I will be making my last trip to OKC for the baseball tournament in May.

Just a guess
But here is how I think it will play out.
Missouri and Texas A&M slot into the west, and Auburn moves to the east , picking up Alabama as its permanent rival, meaning Tennessee will lose its permanent rival. That leaves Georgia and Tennessee as possibilities. I would guess that Missouri would get Tennessee, and Texas A&M gets Georgia, just based on geographic locale.
Auburn already said they won't move to the East because they want to play Tennessee
for some reason (I didn’t even know they were rivals?). So the presidents of the SEC said they’d only admit us if we went to the East, so I assume that’s what happened. It’s dumb, but the SEC is not known for being good at geography.
Alabama
Didn’t want Auburn to move East, becuase Tennessee is Alabama’s current protected rival, so if Auburn moved Alabama would lose that game as an every year thing.
True
But if the SEC adds two teams in the east by 2014, say Louisville and a team to be named later, then Missouri could slot into the west as a more natural fit, and Alabama and Tennessee could keep their rivalry in the meantime. Although at that point, we’d need to split into 4 divisions to keep everything manageable.
that wouldn't make sense as a part of "moving Mizzou to the West"
in fact, it would exacerbate the situation as, in order for the okies to join the SEC West (the only thing that remotely makes sense), a current member of the West would have to join the East. Which is exactly what caused such an uproar when it was brought up that Mizzou could join the SEC West in the first place (and why we’re going East)
Well you could move both Auburn and Alabma to the East
Which would preserve most of the rivalries I think.
But you'd completely unbalance the divisions.
The East would be ridiculous, with Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama and Auburn.
No way that would ever happen.
Oh, come on. Don't leave your uncle T-bag hangin'.
OU would be considered the Bama replacement
but I doubt the fairly insular SEC power structure would see OSU as anything close to Auburn.
Oh, come on. Don't leave your uncle T-bag hangin'.
Welcome!
I hope to see you all in the Swamp in 2012 or 2013.

So how does scheduling work?
6 games within your division, play 3 from the other division for football?
And play 12 games in division for basketball, plus 7 out of division for a 19-game schedule?
No divisions in basketball
Or at least there wan’t. Whether there will be again now is up in the air I suppose.
They got rid of divisions in terms of seeding for the conference tournament.
So, it’s like the old Big 12. Divisions are used for scheduling but in the conference tournament you’re seeded 1-14 based on record, not 1-7 for each division like it used to be before this season.

You can argue about losing the Texas pipeline and losing rivalries and not being competitve
But I think this is the right move.
Plus, those roadtrips!
Texas pipeline won't be hurt as much as we think.
The SEC is still close to Texas kind of, and while some recruits chose Mizzou because we get two games in Texas every year I think we’re still going to get a ton of kids from Texas because we’ve already established a presence there.
My longstanding theory is that conference moves create recruiting boosts...
…but altogether negligible ones. I don’t see A&M’s recruiting getting infinitely better, nor do I see Mizzou’s getting infinitely worse (or better).

You can still have your rivals
I’m sure, for example, Kansas would be willing to work you into their non-conference schedule. Just because Georgia Tech is in the ACC doesn’t keep us from playing them every year. And the SEC roadtrips are sweet.

kansas has said they don't want to play us anymore .
Although I think it might have just been a desperate attempt to get us to stay in the Big 12. But I don’t know how much kansas fans really care about the rivalry considering they never go to the football game and they could easily shift their hate toward K-State.
that is so cute

What exactly does "acting unanimously" mean?
Were we unanimously voted in, or is that just a BS statement?

It means...

I'm actually happier with this than a unanimous vote.
Twitter: KeysMyaths
The SEC does everything "unanimously."
Once a vote is won by one side or other, they re-vote and everyone votes to make it unanimous. Except Vandy, who abstains from such lowly matters as voting on athletic matters.
Oh, come on. Don't leave your uncle T-bag hangin'.
Unaminous vote
Of course, these things always are, even when they are not.
Also, here is the list of things you now enjoy:
- The benefit of the doubt. This NC streak thing has resulted in a huge amount of national respect for the SEC as a football conference, so whatever your record or result, you’ll get some slack. The downside is if you blow an OOC game, you get the “they ’sposed to be SEC” business.
- The wonderfully exciting world of SEC officiating. Some people believe they’re just incompetent, some believe they’re in the bag for the supposed “Big 6.” Others believe they’re all paid employees of [fill in team here]. Perhaps most accurately, they’re probably in the bag for whatever SEC team is in line for an NC berth.
- A bunch of deranged lunatics for conference members. We all have our own unique quirks, but the common thread is mania. Except Vandy.
- All the bowl games against the B1G you can handle. Especially since you’re in the East. All B1G all the time.
- A number of great road trips. Neyland Stadium and the Vol Navy, Between the Hedges and The Swamp. And that’s just your new division.
Oh, come on. Don't leave your uncle T-bag hangin'.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the SEC refs were corrupt and favoring teams.
The conference as a whole is pretty shady.
Not saying it as an insult, it's just kind of true.
Check out LSU’s players magically having felony charges downgraded, or Mississippi State attempting to buy Cam Newton. Weird stuff happens. Happens in the Big 12 too with guys like Scott Drew or weird assault cases (like LaceDarius Dunn’s girlfriend sneaking up on in the dark so she ended up with a broken jaw, or Darryl Butterfield’s girl’s face getting in the way of his fist when he reached for an object).
I think that has more to do with big time college athletics on the whole than with any particular conference
just the times we live in I guess (sadface)
Yeah, you're probably right.
Happens pretty much everywhere, places like Oregon and Ohio State and Baylor. Seems like it little bit more of that goes on in the SEC, especially stuff like oversigning, but that could just be a product of the media.
The SEC has voted to end oversigning.
The truth is only a handful of SEC teams were exploiting it, and the others hated it more than any team from another conference did.
Oh, come on. Don't leave your uncle T-bag hangin'.
Fortunately, we still have MUPD to keep us in line

Wow
Weren’t you bashing Big XII refs last night…
Not really.
Most of that is a myth that’s pushed by other conferences and certain media entities.
Florida does not oversign, has not been on probation in decades, and runs a fanatically compliant athletic department. We seem to do alright.
Oh, come on. Don't leave your uncle T-bag hangin'.

Welcome to the SEC Tigers,
We aren’t as bad as people make us out to be. I can say with much confidence you will be much happier here than the Big 12 in the long run.
thanks! I think the majority of the feelings of the majority of the fanbase are very positive about this right now
if nothing else, it seems expansionpalooza is drawing to a close.. and many of us are glad to start a new adventure
I've been informed by a Tennessee alum coworker
That during every nonconference game we have to start an SEC chant at some point in the 4th quarter
Funny.
The Auburn fans at Clemson didn’t do that this year. But then they had all left by then.

I hope we don't do that.
I don’t understand why people care about their conference so much. If Mizzou wins, we should be chanting M-I-Z Z-O-U.
So do we have to start hating Rocky Top instead of Boomer Sooner?

At least we could have Tony Mitchell at Mizzou Arena if that happened.
Then again, Tony Mitchell may come to Mizzou Arena depending on if we host Alabama in 2012.
Also according to my mother, Mizzou will have to up the game on the Tailgating.
Because she said it was worse than Clemson’s, meaning Mizzou would lose the tailgating battle to pretty much any SEC team. Just saying.

Tailgating is serious business in the SEC.
I know nothing about Mizzou’s tailgating, but it’ll have to be pretty stellar to fit in. Your biggest problem is that you seem to cook the wrong kind of barbecue. This will be rectified with time.

too bad missouri is leaving
there is a lot of dysfunction in the Big XII right now, but I do think things will get straightened out…as i’ve said before, as a KU fan if we were in the same position I would want us to at the very least seriously consider leaving.
however, anyone who thinks that the camera is just going to now fade to black with everyone skipping down the street arm in arm is fooling themselves…how long before Florida, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, OSU, etc. figure out that they can make a shitload more money if they rid themselves of the Vanderbilts, Northwesterns, Indianas, and Mississippi States of the world?
as the prospect of giving players $3,000-$4,000 stipends is on the horizon, how many colleges are going to be able to afford that? will missouri? I’m going to guess no…only a select few schools are going to be able to play in this new environment.
so, enjoy the SEC, I’m sure it will work out just fine…while it lasts.

You could have one conference with only the 16 biggest richest schools in the whole country, but the problem is that they’d have to ditch ALL their rivalries to get them, and fly thousands of miles across the country for every single rhymic gymnastics event, and they’d have to ditch the brand equity build up in conference names like SEC, B1G, PAC, and Notre-God-Damn-We-Won’t-Join_Aynone_Else.
Not ganna happen. College football is motivated by two primary and related forces: Greed and momentum. The latter is largely a product of the former. People have divided the pie up in an elaborate way that has entrenched some schools as a bit more powerful than others, and those schools then have strong vested interests in maintaining the arrangement at all costs, no matter how sensible, say, a playoff might be.
They could kick out a few small schools, yeah, but they still need opponents to play for a full slate of conference games so they’d have to replace them somehow, and mostly the only people to replace them with would be other middling schools.
If they haven't figured it out by now, they never will
An LHN type setup is great for the individual school but poison for the conference. The SEC’s greatest enemy right now is itself. If they allow an LHN situation in the conference, it deserves to fail. But that won’t happen. There seems to be more and more momentum for an SEC Network. Schools have seen what’s happened to the Big XII because of the arrogance and lack of cooperation resulting from Texas/Oklahoma/Nebraska/A&M and they don’t want to recreate that.
