5th Annual Rock M Nation Bowl Pick 'Em Contest
[Bumped back to the top of the page. You've got until Saturday at noon!]
That's right ladies and gentlemen. The longest standing tradition on Rock M Nation is back. The sweet smell of mediocrity has returned in the 5th annual installment of the Rock M Nation Bowl Pick 'Em Contest. For those of you who are new to these parts since last year, the contest is simple. I have lined out all 35 bowl games with the spread and the over/under. This year, thanks to Google and their "forms" (whatever those really are), all you need to do is select (by clicking a bubble) your choices and submit them via the form.
I will be honest that our staggering growth as a community has me a little nervous about the turn-out, but I really do want everyone to throw down, and not just RMN folks. All our friends from around SBN are welcome to join as well. As I find predictions from national pundits (usually in the form of a prediction with a score), I will go ahead and submit them as well, just so you can see how you stacked up. I am new to google forms, but I will do my best to keep everyone up to date on standings as we go along. The contest will be open until next Saturday (the 17th) at noon, as the first game is at 1pm central time.
Instructions and other fun stuff after the jump.
After typing in your RMN handle (and let me know if you have switched names and have entered previous years as another handle) you will see that the point spread is used as part of your selecting the "winner". For those of you who are not familiar with the point spreads, the first game is the New Mexico, where we find the line reading as Temple -7 vs. Wyoming. If you select Temple, it means you not only believe Temple will win, but they will win by more than 7 points. A Wyoming selection means you either believe Wyoming will win the game outright, or will be within 7 points if they lose. The second selection is the over/under. For this game, the O/U is 47. If you believe the teams will combine to score more than 47 points, you go with the over. If you believe they will combine to score less than 47 points, you go with the under. If you believe they are going to score 47 exactly, well...you should do well here. And because there is no real money involved, and we need all the help we can get, ties are wins for everyone :-)
As we last left off, Bill C. is our all-time leader in wins with 146 (MU 1839 is at 143). M7Tiger leads the way of the three-year participants with 115 wins and also has the highest all-time winning percentage for anyone participating in more than one contest (57%). More on the history of this contest can be found by clicking on the completely updated history document, but know this: RMN, as a community, NEEDS to have a another big year to pull up their all-time mark. After three years, we currently sit at 8424-8592, a winning percentage of only 49.5%. We had a big year last year to improve our winning percentage by 2 percentage points, but we need to get over .500 and it needs to happen this year.
In terms of prizes...I am sure we will come up with something worthwhile'ish to serve as a price. Lines are courtesy of VegasInsider.com simply because they were the first I could find with both a line and the O/U. These lines (for the purposes of this contest) are locked, so if it moves later because of suspensions or whatever, it is what it is. You will not be able to change your picks once the contest closes, so keep that in mind. Thanks to Bill C. for putting the form together (though you can blame him for the fact it says "2010" again...you get what you pay for I suppose)
{Edit 10:50am - THE OVER/UNDER ON THE FSU/ND GAME (CHAMPS BOWL) IS ACTUALLY 48. WE ARE LOOKING AT WHETHER WE WANT TO HAVE PEOPLE RESUBMIT OR WHAT OTHER OPTIONS WE HAVE. IF YOU HAVE MADE A PICK AND WANT ME TO CHANGE IT, LET ME KNOW AND I CAN CHANGE IT IN THE DATA FILE}

Freebie for everyone!

After reading your 10:50am edit, I guess you are undecided on this.
I would ask that you change mine if you would be so kind sir.

The ND/FSU Over/Under was supposed to be 48
Looking at how we want to get that fixed…..

How does one access their picks if there are "corrections" or if someone wants to print
a copy of their picks?

tell me what you want it to be and I will change it in the data file
probably easier than having you re-do it

Thought I've only missed one year
Sure as hell feels like I’ve been around a lot longer than two bowl seasons.
The sweet smell of mediocrity?
That sweet smell is coming from this being the first year Bill gets to run this place as a career.
Mediocrity has more of a sour stench to my mind.
To SEC, or not to SEC, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous Texas,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?
run back the extra point attempt for a score?
Never Forget Wolf Island, or pie. #AHAMF, it's vaguely sordid.

wow, good one.
fumble recovery on PAT in endzone leading to safety. Ugh.

for a team to score only and exactly 1 point, however
the defense would have to block the PAT, return it almost all the way to the other endzone, and fumble. At this point, a player from the team who had attempted the PAT would have to pick up the ball, somehow be forced to run backward into the endzone, and then be tackled. This would award the defending team a 1 pt safety, and if that were their only score of the game, they could actually end up with a final score of 1.

Well, my guesses are in . . .
. . . so nobody has to worry about finishing last this year.
Seriously, I really look forward to this each year – kudos to The Beef for his willingness to put up with all our questions and with all the organizational nonsense necessary for it to happen.
57-54-9 . . . get used to it, jaybirds; and let us know when you want us to make it worse. Go Mizzou!

How does the RMN commentariat feel about Shreveport?
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 9:36 AM CST reply actions
You mean Shitport?
I think we deserved a better bowl, we beat every team that got a B12 bowl. And worse, this will continue the myth that MU fans don’t travel well, even though it is literally THE DAY after Christmas. You can’t expect people to want to spend Christmas in Shreveport. So that sucks. But it’s a bowl, it gets the young guys practice, so that’s good.
You’re an Auburn guy right?
I am indeed
and a former rugger to boot..
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 9:44 AM CST up reply actions
Then I guess I don't totally hate you!
Haha that’s how the hate is supposed to work right?
What position?
I was a winger, however I'm now more built for a lock, having put on about 75 lbs.
The metal plate in my shoulder kinda ended the whole thing. FUCK YOU GEORGIA TECH!
As far as hate goes: I’m obligated to hate Bama at all times. I’m obligated to hate LSU at all times with the exception of when they play Bama. I can’t really muster hate for Mizzou, but I can always poke fun.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 9:55 AM CST up reply actions
Ouch. Sorry to here that.
Dirty tackle?
Ha well I think I can easily hate LSU and Bama. I do have a certain grudging admiration for the way Auburn hires recruits though.
Nah, legit tackle, just landed on it wrong. Almost had the clavicle poking through the skin.
It sucked.
Bammer, LSU, and UGA are all very easy to hate. I wouldn’t worry about Auburn, we seem to have hit our salary cap for the next few years.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 9:59 AM CST up reply actions
That sounds terrible, I'm really sorry about that
I hurt my ankle in august and it’s still not right. Was playing touch and jumped to catch a kickoff, came down and completely rolled my ankle, people said it sounded like I stepped on an empty water bottle. I now feel like a baby ha.
Good, cause we want this Boehm kid, and a bidding war would have been expensive.
I’ve always been curious, but what is the opinion of MU from SEC folks? Did they really want WVU?
by MizzouRugby on Dec 14, 2011 10:07 AM CST up reply actions
Depends on who you talk to.
Most were of the opinion WVU is a better cultural fit and Columbia is too midwestern. I think Columbia is actually fairly similar to Athens, GA. They figure you’ll be a 6-6 or 7-5 team, maybe. I had several of my Auburn friends up about two weeks ago and they really enjoyed the town.
The notion of a “Missouri” in the deep south is pretty tabla rasa. It’s kind of a 1950s Leave it to Beaver/Route66 idea without any real defining characteristics.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 10:11 AM CST up reply actions
Hm.. Well we will disagree with that W/L prediction
But it’s good to know we get a chance to leave a good impression
by MizzouRugby on Dec 14, 2011 10:21 AM CST up reply actions
If the leaked schedule is accurate i've got this next year:
TN-win
Vandy-win
UK-win
USC-loss
FL-loss
UGA-loss
Aggie-toss up
Ole Miss-win
So 4-3 in conference play with a toss up to aggie (mostly because I don’t know enough about them). Winning your non-cons would put you at up to 9-3 which wouldn’t be a bad year.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 10:28 AM CST up reply actions
I'd argue about the FL game
They lost some talent, will have a new QB (I would say thats bad for the team, but other people didn’t like Brantley so idk) and a new OC (good), so I like our chances, especially if its at home.
Aggie should be a win, they also lost a ton of senior talent, new coach, and westill beat them this year.
by MizzouRugby on Dec 14, 2011 10:34 AM CST up reply actions
Florida is always a danger. It depends on who they get as OC
and what he can do pertaining to player development. It’s more their defense that worries me against a turnover prone Mizzou qb. They were really weak this year (auburn beat them for christ’s sake).
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 10:38 AM CST up reply actions
Ha turnover prone?
James hadn’t turned over the ball in like 2 or 3 games before the kU game, thank you very much!
We were shocked that he threw those bad of passes, it was his worst half of the year. But he got it together in the second half. And only 10 INTs as a first year starter is pretty good, especially when he only threw INT’s in 5 of the games this year. It does suck that he had multiple multiple INT games, but I would not call him turnover prone, just a QB learning the ropes in his first year.
by MizzouRugby on Dec 14, 2011 10:48 AM CST up reply actions
He will be better next year, yes.
But you haven’t been facing defenses like you will down there. Depending on your draw from the west, I think Mizzou could have had an outside run at the SEC east title this year.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 10:53 AM CST up reply actions
I still like our chances
I’d agree with that. If we can rise to the occasion and steal a win from Jawja or SCAR, I like our chances.
I heard our draw was Ole Miss btw
by MizzouRugby on Dec 14, 2011 11:02 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah, that's why I put them in there
They aint winning for a while. You got really lucky.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 11:08 AM CST up reply actions
Oh I missed that
We are.
Unlike ATM. They really might only beat Miss State, Ol Miss and their OCC.
by MizzouRugby on Dec 14, 2011 11:19 AM CST up reply actions
Auburn won't be that good next year.
Depends on who we get as OC and when we face aggie. Watch them pull UGA or USC as their first rotator.
by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 11:42 AM CST up reply actions
Watch them get Vandy
And go completely mental when they lose. That’s what I’m hoping for

I've submitted my picks following my usual habit
Since I know next to nothing about any of those football teams, I made my picks based on which of those schools baseball teams would win. Which is easy on several of the matchups featuring a school that has no baseball program.
And I picked Mizzou out of loyalty, even though North Carolina baseball would be the more logical baseball choice (they were #1 in RPI in 2011)
Oh, and those over/under numbers are ridiculous for baseball, so I picked Under on nearly ever one.
I predict that I will blow everyone else away and win this.

We've got 140 entrants so far
Hopefully we can add a few more before kickoff later today.
Good luck everyone!

hey, so if we didn't memorize our picks
is there a way we can access them now to follow ourselves?

if i remember correctly...
i think beef/bill/someone will link to a spreadsheet once this thing gets started where you can see your picks (and everyone else’s).
