E.J. Gaines is Missouri's first 1st-team all-conference cornerback of the Big 12 era, first since Adrian Jones (1989) overall

A hearty congrats to E.J. Gaines and Dominique Hamilton for joining Henry Josey and Michael Egnew on the writers' All-Big 12 team. Gaines is second in the country in passes broken up, third in passes defended per game. He has been incredible, and his honors are well-deserved. Meanwhile, all Hamilton did was pull down seven tackles for loss, recover two fumbles ... and win two games by batting down passes. Kudos.

Now, I'm trying not to have too much fun with the Weis hire, simply because people are acting just as incredulously to this as they were to Frank Haith back in April (and if the season ended today, Haith would probably be national coach of the year). That said, there is no Marcus Denmon waiting to be inherited on the Kansas roster, no Flip Pressey ... hell, no Brady Quinn for that matter. Honestly, I don't know what Kansas saw in Weis at this stage in his career, and other than MONEY MONEY MONEY, I'm not sure what Weis saw in Kansas. This is as baffling (and hilarious) a hire as I've seen in a while.

I'm here at the student ticket pickup for the kU game...

Have never seen this many people lined up for the ticket. The line of people lines both walls around the concourse of the Arena. Free coffee and donuts though!

I was more speaking of the line for admission.

We lined up the night before, waited for hours upon hours and then when we got in we found out that all we waited for was to sit behind the friggin zou crew who ambled in hungover whenever they damn well pleased (up to and including halftime).

Nobody's going to say Mizzou's a lock or anything...

…but I do think they’ve got as good a shot as Arkansas or Oklahoma and a better shot than Alabama or Texas. The theory is that he’s going to stay reasonably close to home. So we’ll say Mizzou, UA and OU are each at 30%, UT and Bama at 5%. It’s a crapshoot, but people have been completely writing Mizzou out for a while, and I think that is unfounded. They wrote us off for Richardson and (more understandably) Gabbert too.

by Bill C. on Dec 9, 2011 7:57 AM CST up reply actions

I have no idea what kind of pitch Pinkel and co. have made

But at face value it seems like we have a lot to offer:

- Our offensive coordinator likes to run a pass-first offence when he has the tools to do it, so he would get the ball a lot.
- By design, or offence forces defences to cover every receiver, so teams couldn’t just double him on every down.
- We’re moving to college football’s premier conference, so he would get plenty of exposure.
- Our coaching staff has sent two wide receivers to the NFL who contributed immediately, so we can develop talent at the highest level.
- Every quarterback that has started at Mizzou since ‘02 is in the NFL now, and he would be coming in with the a record breaking high school quarterback, so he’s going to have guys that can get him the ball.
- Geography

by Damnatio Memoriae on Dec 9, 2011 8:25 AM CST up reply actions

might be a stretch to say we have two WRs that contributed immediately

Maclin has been great for the Eagles, but DA has struggled. When healthy, he can be a stud, but it’s a misleading to point to him as an NFL success story at this point. As a Mizzou success story? Clearly. As an example of Mizzou’s coaching staff sticking with a player through tribulation and injury? Absolutely. As evidence that Mizzou is churning out NFL-calibar WRs on a regular basis? Can’t go there yet.

I think the emphasis is on "seem"

Do we really have that many more defensive players in the league than offensive, and have they been that much more successful? Just looking at Wikipedia (unreliable but convenient), I’m counting 8 players on each side of the ball currently in the NFL (including practice squads)…

by Damnatio Memoriae on Dec 9, 2011 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

True but how successful are they.

Maclin looks good Gabbert is starting but things are harder for QB’s Brad Smith has had a nice career. I would argue that Justin Smith and Aldon Smith are playing much better and then you throw in Spoon and Ziggy Hood I still feel better success is with the D right now.

I think the better chance at a split

is a close win for Bama over LSU. The only way to get a split is if the AP doesn’t go with the BCS. AP might vote for LSU over Bama because LSU beat Bama at home. I don’t see how the AP would have it’s 2nd place team get leaped frogged if it beat the #1 team, especially in a blow out.

You sir,

underestimate the ability of the SEC to play stupidly competitive defensive match ups. This game will last at least a fortnight and end in a tie, so that all may know that the SEC is the grandest conference that has ever been…or at least everyone South of the Mason Dixon Line.

The only way a game lasts a fortnight

Is if Mike Leach somehow coaches a game against himself. Every play would be either a first down or an incomplete pass, and the play clock would never make it below 20. Of course, if both teams were coached by Leach, neither would actually play defence, so ever play would go for a touchdown.

Maybe in the AP poll, which is no longer a part of the BCS formula

But I believe that in the other polls (the ones that figure into the BCS formula) the winner of the “national championship” is automatically declared #1. OSU may end up #2, but I don’t think they could be #1 because of the way the system is set up.

Weis vs. Haith

Since RCT won’t let me pee in their litter box anymore, I’ll note that several folks (KSinDC, I am looking at you) have been comparing the waves created by the Haith and Weis hirings. I will give you that both set off media firestorms, derisive comments, etc. So to the extent that the comparision is offered up for “you never know,” that’s fine.

But the analogy falls apart in one critical way: nobody disputes that Haith was ina tough spot coaching Miami — a school with no basketball tradition competing in the ACC. But Weis was the head coach at Notre Dame, which has every advantage a college program could ever have.

That said, I do understand the beakers rallying around their man. As fans, what is your alternative? But I think they would have been better off with just about any of their other potential hires.

That's probably all their is to it

Say you’re a successful coach from a mid-major conference. You can either spend another couple years where you are, making okay money and letting your stock rise before a major program with a commitment to football takes a chance on you, or you can take the easy money from a school that has no commitment to football and basically torpedo your career. Seems like an easy choice to me, unless you’re so full of yourself you think you can lift a program out of the crapper by sheer force of will.

Look how much they’ve paid to fire and replace coaches. They’re going to be doling out around 6 mil a year. We’re only paying GP some 2.6 or so.

That’s commitment! They’re just REALLY bad at it.

Never Forget Wolf Island, or pie. #AHAMF, it's vaguely sordid.

by Spider_Monkey on Dec 9, 2011 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

If you're saying they're trying to be committed and doing a terrible job, I agree.

Commitment is more than dumping money into your head coach. You have to build a complete coaching staff, strength and support staff, dieticians, have top-rate facilities, etc. There were a lot of better ways they could have spent that money.

It helps to have people show up to games, too, but that’s somewhat outside the administration’s control.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Dec 9, 2011 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

Well they've started working with Groupon on the attendance thing.

I suggest Paula Deen for dietician. And they have like 37 coaches on the payroll. Instead of firing them with pay, they should just demote them to recruiters or cooking staff for Weis. If you’re going to pay them…

Never Forget Wolf Island, or pie. #AHAMF, it's vaguely sordid.

by Spider_Monkey on Dec 9, 2011 10:52 AM CST up reply actions

Looking right back at you

The prognostication track record has not been strong enough for the level of confidence displayed. Drawing distinctions between the hires doesn’t change that.

And my opinion on him is there for anybody to read. I don’t think I would have chosen Weis (and I don’t like throwing all the money at football), but I trust our AD as a football man, and I hope that trust is well placed. I’m kind of surprised MU fans didn’t give Alden more benefit of the doubt with the Haith hiring, but it’s not as though KU fans have been rushing to defend Zenger, so it is what it is.

Ugh, I have seen them.

Trust me, it needs to be blown up. In fact, some of the old timers told me when they initially erected the south stands, I think, they collapsed a few weeks later. Comforting.

It depends on how bad the voters take the murder.

If it was an awesome murder, maybe she gets extra credit for that. What if some mom’s are changing families and voters are getting revenge for that?

I've asked Spencer Hall a couple of questions today on Reddit, thought I'd share them

What should us Mizzou fans expect next season? I’ve been to Talladega, will the visiting crowds be just like that? And how well will Gary Pinkel fit in the SEC?

HELL. We’re going to write a piece on this, but you should expect confusion on the part of fans, some courtesy, and then the usual mix of fear and derision. As far as Talladega comparisons go, a NASCAR crowd is rougher and more downscale than most SEC crowds, so the comparison is inaccurate in that respect.
As far as Pinkel goes, he’s gonna have to start drinkin’ brown liquor if he wants any respect around here. (SEC coaches drink beer in cans, actually. He’ll be fine.)

Another Mizzou to the SEC question: What five things do I need to have in order to create an “SEC-level” tailgate?

Brown liquor
Massive televisions with satellite hookup.
Some form of multiplayer game
A humorous sign or prop or flag
Music, but be sure to throw in a few curveballs.
