Championship Week Live Thread: Day Four (Early)

Okay, now things really get interesting.  There were 28 games yesterday ... and there are 51 today.  Let's roll.

BUT FIRST ... today's early discussion question: what are Mizzou's best ever conference tournament performances (team or player)?  I asked Michael Atchison about this, and here are some of his suggestions:

1978 (Team and Stan Ray)
1982 (Ricky Frazier scored 24 in the title game)
1987 (Team and "Lee Coward, Jayhawk Assassin")
1989 (Norm fights cancer, team wins title despite 38 from Stacey King)
1991 (Team and Doug Smith)
1993 (Team and Chris Heller)

2009 (Team and ... Matt Lawrence?)

What are your favorites?

Doug Smith - senior year

No NCAAs? Well then, here’s a big F U to the rest of the college basketball world!

by Mac6uffin on Mar 10, 2011 10:21 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, 91 Doug Smith holds a special place in my heart

and Doug’s is probably the best overall performance. 87 Lee Coward is probably the single best “moment” Mizzou has ever had in a conference tourney.

by Professor Chaos on Mar 10, 2011 10:27 AM CST up reply actions

i'm young and not a mizzou history buff BUT...

2003 was my favorite tourney that i remember. made a run to the final (while beating kansas in the semis!) before finally breaking down against a superior oklahoma team.

Bill

If you are lurking around I had a question. Is RMN going to present for Mizzou’s Pro Day on the 17th?

Great moments are born from great opportunity.

1991 was special. Lee Coward was amazing.

But for me. It was 2009. Mizzou announcing to the college basketball world that the Quin days were over and that we were back. And while the tight great games are fantastic, itwas nice to be able to watch the last 5 or so minutes of the game knowing that we were going to win a Big 12 Championship.

by mizzou2396 on Mar 10, 2011 10:37 AM CST reply actions

What was great about that

was the absolute feeling of foreshadowing that prevailed during/after that run. It may be laughable to say in hindsight, but you could just feel that we were about to make a big run in the Bing Dance.

by MU'97 on Mar 10, 2011 10:45 AM CST up reply actions

agreed.

It was also great to get to watch Selection Sunday as a way to determine where we would be in the tournament. Making Mizzou relevant again on Selection Sunday. I was so happy about that. Even though this season hasn’t gone as well as we’d all hoped, it’s nice to know that on Sunday our name will be called. And just by getting your name called, you have a shot.

by mizzou2396 on Mar 10, 2011 10:47 AM CST up reply actions

Looks like five, from 86 to 90.

Norm and Qun also combined for five straight (his last two years, Quin’s first three).

by MU'97 on Mar 10, 2011 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

cool.

so MA will eclipse that in three years.

by stlcardinalsfang on Mar 10, 2011 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Well, you pretty much had to win your conference during much of Norm's tenure

In 1985, they expanded to 64 teams

1980 – 1984 it was 48 teams.
79 – 40 teams
75 – 78 – 32 teams
68 – 74 – 25 teams
67 – 24 teams
etc….

Not taking a shot at what CMA has done, but you can’t understate how much more difficult it was to make the tournament during the majority of Norm’s career.

Rational Mizzou Talk, whether you like us or not.

by Andy--01 on Mar 10, 2011 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

It was Norm's last and Quin's first four

in the interest of giving a small bit of credit to Quin

by CBonerfied on Mar 10, 2011 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

I believe 5

but, the streak was interrupted by the 90-91 season where we ruled inelgible for the tourney. We made it the next 4 years after that.

by mizzou2396 on Mar 10, 2011 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

Another one worth talking about is the '97 team.

Totally mediocre team (other than the great win over KU) but they get super hot from 3 w/ Grimm and Sutherland and blitz to the finals before hitting the beaker buzzsaw. Up there with the ’93 team in terms of overachieving.

by MU'97 on Mar 10, 2011 10:47 AM CST reply actions

They just ran out of gas

and the Jayhawks were out for revenge for their only loss of the year.

by Mac6uffin on Mar 10, 2011 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

Derek and Jason . . .

. . . were ‘gangsta rap’ personified in basketball during their tour of duty on the Missouri hardwood. You didn’t want to come into Columbia with ‘finesse’ guards in those days – they would get mugged. It was sometimes exciting, sometimes embarrassing, but always entertaining . . . especially if you liked full-body contact.

by countrycal on Mar 10, 2011 6:34 PM CST up reply actions

My buddy always said that Jason Sutherland

Was as likely to dunk it, shoot a 3 or get a T. And he was perfectly happy with any of those outcomes

by mizzou2396 on Mar 10, 2011 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

the fact that the Big East quarterfinals has

3 v. 19 is astounding. What makes it more astounding is that the #19 team in the country had to beat a higher seed to get there.

by mizzou2396 on Mar 10, 2011 11:09 AM CST reply actions

more facts about the big east tourney...

-ranked uconn and ranked all season villanova had to play on the first day, when only those seeded 9 or lower had to play

-#19 uconn vs #22 georgetown was a second round matchup. or what a first round matchup would be in any other conference

-#19 uconn vs #3 (and likely 1-seed) pitt is a quarterfinal

-#11 syracuse vs #18 st john’s is also a quarterfinal

and yet, i still think the conference as a whole is overrated.

The second happened when a kU player and OSU player (Brown) got tangled up and went to the floor under the kU basket.

Brown turned around and said something at the kU player while he was getting up. It was pretty quick, and I don’t really think a technical was necessary. I think only kU gets that called.

He hit it good. He hit it good.

Does anyone here know how that works? Are they required to broadcast that warning at 13:30 no exceptions?

Yes. My wife very rarely has a problem with me putting things on hold to watch an important game

(for football, that’s ANY game, for basketball that’s post-season or KU games).

However, if I was stupid enough to plan something with her during the game, that’s my own damn fault.

My wife is very cool, but if I get her excited about something, I better follow through.

Reid Gettys...

…not as smart as he thinks he is. He insisted a kicked ball resets the shot clock to 35 seconds. Not any more. Even I knew that.

Okay, answered it myself (google is marvelous)
RESET to 15 seconds when:
1. there is an intentionally kicked or fisted ball with 14 seconds or less on the shot clock.

NO RESET when:

2. there is an intentionally kicked or fisted ball with 15 seconds or more on the shot clock.

and this game means almost nothing for us (except K-State has a marginally better chance of beating kansas).

I typically root for K-State if I have nothing else influencing me.

As for Colorado, I didn’t like them that much before last year, I don’t blame them for bolting when they did, but, they still bolted. Screw them.

by Bill C. on Mar 10, 2011 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

I am assuming the same on him and ku

Read he is really learning to be perimeter player. Played inside for quite a while.

He does have one thing that Denmon, Flip, MP and Dixon don’t have. He is 6’5".

Looking at the Capital One Cup standings

By the way, this is NOT the same as the Directors Cup.

In first is Auburn AND Eastern Washington.

Also ranked in the standings – (34 teams total) – Northern Arizona, Brown, Iona, North Dakota State, New Hampshire, Wm & Mary, GA Southern, App. State, Akron, Delaware

Compare that to the Directors Cup: Stanford is #1 and the highest ranked non FBS school is Princeton (#25) Mizzou is #45 (tied with ND State and USF).

Thoughts from yesterday at the Sprint Center

I sat behind a nice OU fan with a giant cowboy hat. Pretty sure my jaw dropped when I saw what they were doing to Baylor

There was a section of grumpy old men Texas fans with matching hats. Hilarious

Man, the pizza at the Sprint Center sucked.

I also sat in front of a bunch of pissed off MU fans during the first half. Every possession was a barbed comment on how this team sucks at everything, especially Kimmie. I couldn’t handle rooting for sports like that. They left after the first half, so I’m attributing that to Kimmie’s mini-comeback.
