Championship Week Live Thread: Day Four (Early)
Okay, now things really get interesting. There were 28 games yesterday ... and there are 51 today. Let's roll.
BUT FIRST ... today's early discussion question: what are Mizzou's best ever conference tournament performances (team or player)? I asked Michael Atchison about this, and here are some of his suggestions:
1978 (Team and Stan Ray)
1982 (Ricky Frazier scored 24 in the title game)
1987 (Team and "Lee Coward, Jayhawk Assassin")
1989 (Norm fights cancer, team wins title despite 38 from Stacey King)
1991 (Team and Doug Smith)
1993 (Team and Chris Heller)
2009 (Team and ... Matt Lawrence?)
What are your favorites?

Doug Smith - senior year
No NCAAs? Well then, here’s a big F U to the rest of the college basketball world!
Yeah, 91 Doug Smith holds a special place in my heart
and Doug’s is probably the best overall performance. 87 Lee Coward is probably the single best “moment” Mizzou has ever had in a conference tourney.

i'm young and not a mizzou history buff BUT...
2003 was my favorite tourney that i remember. made a run to the final (while beating kansas in the semis!) before finally breaking down against a superior oklahoma team.

That was fun...
…he makes the shot, then just starts running in the other direction. Came THIS CLOSE to making an absolutely silly comeback against OU in the finals…

If you are lurking around I had a question. Is RMN going to present for Mizzou’s Pro Day on the 17th?

1991 was special. Lee Coward was amazing.
But for me. It was 2009. Mizzou announcing to the college basketball world that the Quin days were over and that we were back. And while the tight great games are fantastic, itwas nice to be able to watch the last 5 or so minutes of the game knowing that we were going to win a Big 12 Championship.
What was great about that
was the absolute feeling of foreshadowing that prevailed during/after that run. It may be laughable to say in hindsight, but you could just feel that we were about to make a big run in the Bing Dance.
agreed.
It was also great to get to watch Selection Sunday as a way to determine where we would be in the tournament. Making Mizzou relevant again on Selection Sunday. I was so happy about that. Even though this season hasn’t gone as well as we’d all hoped, it’s nice to know that on Sunday our name will be called. And just by getting your name called, you have a shot.
what was the longest streak of ncaa births during the norm era?

Looks like five, from 86 to 90.
Norm and Qun also combined for five straight (his last two years, Quin’s first three).
cool.
so MA will eclipse that in three years.

Well, you pretty much had to win your conference during much of Norm's tenure
In 1985, they expanded to 64 teams
1980 – 1984 it was 48 teams.
79 – 40 teams
75 – 78 – 32 teams
68 – 74 – 25 teams
67 – 24 teams
etc….
Not taking a shot at what CMA has done, but you can’t understate how much more difficult it was to make the tournament during the majority of Norm’s career.
Rational Mizzou Talk, whether you like us or not.
I believe 5
but, the streak was interrupted by the 90-91 season where we ruled inelgible for the tourney. We made it the next 4 years after that.
Another one worth talking about is the '97 team.
Totally mediocre team (other than the great win over KU) but they get super hot from 3 w/ Grimm and Sutherland and blitz to the finals before hitting the beaker buzzsaw. Up there with the ’93 team in terms of overachieving.
Derek and Jason . . .
. . . were ‘gangsta rap’ personified in basketball during their tour of duty on the Missouri hardwood. You didn’t want to come into Columbia with ‘finesse’ guards in those days – they would get mugged. It was sometimes exciting, sometimes embarrassing, but always entertaining . . . especially if you liked full-body contact.
My buddy always said that Jason Sutherland
Was as likely to dunk it, shoot a 3 or get a T. And he was perfectly happy with any of those outcomes
the fact that the Big East quarterfinals has
3 v. 19 is astounding. What makes it more astounding is that the #19 team in the country had to beat a higher seed to get there.
more facts about the big east tourney...
-ranked uconn and ranked all season villanova had to play on the first day, when only those seeded 9 or lower had to play
-#19 uconn vs #22 georgetown was a second round matchup. or what a first round matchup would be in any other conference
-#19 uconn vs #3 (and likely 1-seed) pitt is a quarterfinal
-#11 syracuse vs #18 st john’s is also a quarterfinal
and yet, i still think the conference as a whole is overrated.

The second happened when a kU player and OSU player (Brown) got tangled up and went to the floor under the kU basket.
Brown turned around and said something at the kU player while he was getting up. It was pretty quick, and I don’t really think a technical was necessary. I think only kU gets that called.

Mediacom
Just brilliant. If it had been during the Tigers’ game that would have been the last straw for me. I am very close to making a change.
We switched about six weeks ago...
…CenturyLink has its own set of issues (internet speed is far from blazing, for one), but … it is just infinitely less miserable than dealing with Mediacom.
The only thing....
…keeping me from switching to CenturyLink is the lack of ESPN3 :(
And the fact that I’m lazy :)
pretty sure that they don't have any choice about the NWS warning
if they want to keep their broadcasting license anyway. I was listening to the game on the radio in KC on 610 (have I mentioned how much I love Mike Kelly? KU’s announcer is TERRRRRIIIBLE!)
Does anyone here know how that works? Are they required to broadcast that warning at 13:30 no exceptions?
"I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order. Like they should be."

Public schools had to do it as well. Was originally scheduled for earlier this week but they had to move it due to the threat of bad weather on the original day.

Still not much of a decision in my mind, unless the movie is with the President or something.

wait, the President is going to be in KC tonight?
and he’s going to a movie instead of the Big 12 tourney? That’s weird.
Don't know what the details are

Yes. My wife very rarely has a problem with me putting things on hold to watch an important game
(for football, that’s ANY game, for basketball that’s post-season or KU games).
However, if I was stupid enough to plan something with her during the game, that’s my own damn fault.

Reid Gettys...
…not as smart as he thinks he is. He insisted a kicked ball resets the shot clock to 35 seconds. Not any more. Even I knew that.
My ears will be bleeding after listening to Armstrong and Gettys for 4 days :(
What IS that rule?

After listening to those two for 4 games...
…it made me appreciate Musburger and Knight this morning.
Okay, answered it myself (google is marvelous)
RESET to 15 seconds when:
1. there is an intentionally kicked or fisted ball with 14 seconds or less on the shot clock.
…
NO RESET when:
…
2. there is an intentionally kicked or fisted ball with 15 seconds or more on the shot clock.

actually, I DO need to know what is in the basketball context.

A wild guess would be something like punching the ball.
That’s all I can think of.
He hit it good. He hit it good.
Not to re-hash bad memories...
But what did Flip do in the A&M game this year that semi “cost” us the game. I remember the people I was with stand up and yell something at him, but I can’t remember what he did.
Anyone?
He just drove and tried for a shot instead of passing to Denmon, I believe.
Drew contact, but not enough contact apparently.
So if Colorado holds on and beats K St for the third time...
At home, on road, and semi-road, they secure a 6th big 12 team right?
Annoying You Since 1986
The rule...
…if the shot clock is above 15 seconds it stays the same. Below 15 seconds, it resets to 15. I believe it changed last year but it could have been this year.

I hate Frank and Boyle so much. It’s one of those good news-bad news sort of things. The good news is that Frank Martin is losing. The bad news is that Tad Boyle is winning.
It's really just that he's a Kansas guy.
Same with Turgeon. I don’t like either of them. I hate Frank much more than those guys (although I have to admit that Martin has done a pretty good job turning their season around).
Anything other than the ku connection in your dislike of Boyle?

Make your free throw go home play tomorrow night
I'll say this:
Otto Porter is more highly rated than Roberson was last year, but if we land him, I’ll be perfectly happy if he ‘just’ produces what Roberson has this year. A skinny rebounding machine.
I know he still has us as "high" with only Georgetown as "medium"
but I’m getting worried about not getting him. I know we’ve offered, but I’m scared he’s waiting for better offers to come in. It seems like he’s been really gaining steam as a recruit over the last couple months. I wish he’d just commit already.
He hit it good. He hit it good.

No...
…but I’m just assuming he signs with Kansas until I hear otherwise. Unless McLemore’s a crazy good perimeter defender, we need Porter much more than we need McLemore.
I am assuming the same on him and ku
Read he is really learning to be perimeter player. Played inside for quite a while.
He does have one thing that Denmon, Flip, MP and Dixon don’t have. He is 6’5".
"Anderson won't make substitutions. He'll change lines - Tiller, Taylor and English hit the bench while Denmon, Dixon and Paul hop the boards. Welcome to Hockey Night in Columbia. He won't take time outs. He'll take on fuel and tires. Welcome to the Hardwood 400." - Atch
That's the one thing I really like about him.
We really could use some more size on the perimeter. Kreklow could step up in that department next year, but having a 5 star guy wouldn’t hurt either.
He hit it good. He hit it good.
Apparently, his history as an inside player lends itself to some decent rebounding skills as well.

Looking at the Capital One Cup standings
By the way, this is NOT the same as the Directors Cup.
In first is Auburn AND Eastern Washington.
Also ranked in the standings – (34 teams total) – Northern Arizona, Brown, Iona, North Dakota State, New Hampshire, Wm & Mary, GA Southern, App. State, Akron, Delaware
Compare that to the Directors Cup: Stanford is #1 and the highest ranked non FBS school is Princeton (#25) Mizzou is #45 (tied with ND State and USF).

Thoughts from yesterday at the Sprint Center
I sat behind a nice OU fan with a giant cowboy hat. Pretty sure my jaw dropped when I saw what they were doing to Baylor
There was a section of grumpy old men Texas fans with matching hats. Hilarious
Man, the pizza at the Sprint Center sucked.
I also sat in front of a bunch of pissed off MU fans during the first half. Every possession was a barbed comment on how this team sucks at everything, especially Kimmie. I couldn’t handle rooting for sports like that. They left after the first half, so I’m attributing that to Kimmie’s mini-comeback.
