On Missouri head basketball coach Mike Anderson, the former assistant under Nolan Richardson speculated as one of the top candidates to replace Pelphrey:

"He was one of the first head coaches to visit me in the fall. A few of his assistants came down and were the first coaches to visit me. He was busy that day — I think he had a funeral or something — he visited like a week or so later. Mike Anderson is a wonderful person. Very good personality, very good coach
