Mizzou Links, 3-21-11

Sounds like Rolandis Woodland had himself a pretty good day on Saturday. (Photo via Bill Carter.)

There's a Mike Anderson post coming up soon enough, so ... how about we focus on everything in the Mizzou universe that DOESN'T involve Mike Anderson for a little while?

  • The Trib (Dave Matter): Defense claims first spring scrimmage

On the first play of a starters-vs.-starter series, Franklin didn't see Gooden flashing across the field in coverage and threw the ball right at the outside linebacker. Gooden cruised into the end zone on a 40-yard return. "Pre-snap, I was throwing to the left," Franklin said. "He was right of the center, and I know Zaviar's fast, but when I was going for the snap, I put my head down. When I brought it up, I saw the slant there. But what I didn't see was him coming across the field. That one was on me."

On the next series, Madison whipped past left tackle Jack Meiners and seemed to have Franklin knocked unbalanced while he was scanning his reads downfield. Franklin got spun around and wildly threw downfield for L'Damian Washington, nearly getting picked again as Kenji Jackson swarmed Washington and the ball. A play later, Franklin underthrew his target and hit Jackson in the feet. Franklin admitted later he wasn't doing a great job of flushing his mistakes before taking the next snap.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Xavier Smith is turning some heads the last few days. On a bubble screen from Glaser to Sasser, Smith easily shed a block by Jaleel Clark and dropped Sasser near the line of scrimmage. A few plays later, another backup in the secondary, walk-on Randy Ponder, smoked Eric Waters in the open field, leaving the tight end shaky getting up.

  • PowerMizzou: Defense wins first scrimmage
L'Damian Washington and Rolandis Woodland really stood out at receiver. Washington finished with four catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns, and Woodland caught four for 60. Woodland showed his potential to be dynamic with the ball in his hands, as he juked defenders on two long catch-and-runs. Bud Sasser led the receivers with six catches, but never got the ball with room to work, finishing with 27 yards.

PLAY OF THE DAY: During the two-minute drill (Really, a one-minute, 30-second drill), Gabbert threw off his back foot about thirty yards downfield to Washington on the sideline. Washington caught the ball, made a cut towards the hash to juke Daniel Easterly, and coasted the rest of the way to a 64-yard touchdown. For most of the day, Tyler Gabbert looked more like Chase Daniel, completing passes underneath and keeping the chains moving with his accuracy. That play, however, was a Blaine-type moment.

I'm pretty sure whoever wins the QB job,

they’ll do a more than capable job. There’s so much experience around them coming back, and as we’ve seen the past few QB’s, Pinkel and Yost get them ready to roll come gameday.

I think the qb's will be adaquete.

But its going to be tough. Road games at Arizona State and Oklahoma in the first 4 games will be a tough way to break in a new qb.

Oh I completely agree.

Point I was trying to make was with such an experienced group surrounding whoever wins the competition, especially in their first year starting, they will most likely just have to be capable out there, not pressured to be the guy that will have to make “the big plays” out there. I mean sure, that would be awesome to have a game-changer out there right off the bat, but that’s most likely not the case. There’s gonna be some growing pains, but I think the experienced cast around them should hopefully keep that to a minimum.

Chelsea Thomas is better at being a softball pitcher than you will ever be at anything.

So I know I'm reading a lot from one comment, but...
Tyler Gabbert looked more like Chase Daniel, completing passes underneath and keeping the chains moving with his accuracy. That play, however, was a Blaine-type moment.

Can you imagine a player as heady as Chase with even a few more of Blaine’s physical gifts? Holy crap.

We all understand what being a Mizzou fan is like. That’s no excuse for being a douche.

I've always been under the impression that Tyler had Chase's physical gifts.

"What's misunderstood about you?"
"Nobody thinks I'm a genius."

In terms of size, that remains my impression.

However, based on the kinds of things they’re saying about throws he’s making, I’m developing the impression that Blaine may not be the only Gabbert with a laser rocket arm.

We all understand what being a Mizzou fan is like. That’s no excuse for being a douche.
