Softball vs. #19 Texas Tech (both games)
The Tigers continue a lengthy stretch away from home with their 2nd Big XII series of the year down in Lubbock. The Lady Guns Up's are 35-1 coming in, and have a couple of decent wins under their belts. The Saturday game is already underway, so I will wrap up the action so far before letting the live thread loose.
{And we will go ahead and use this for the Sunday affair as well}
The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead early thanks to a single by Rhea Taylor, who then used to outs to get to third and was driven in quite clutchly by frosh Maddison Ruggeberg. Thomas K'ed the side in order in the bottom of the first.
Mizzou plated another in the 2nd on three singles by Muller, Krebs and Christopher. Tech went down in order
In the third, the Tigers had back to back singles with 1 out from Ruggeberg and Hudson, but Muller lined into a double play to end the inning. Richardson of Tech led off the bottom with a HR to make it 2-1.
In the fourth, Mizzou got it right back with a single from Krebs and a double from Abby Vock. Tech went in order once again.
Tech replaced their starter during the top of the 5th, and Nicole Hudson drew a walk with two outs to get us all caught up.

Good win for Mizzou today. I think Tech’s record may be a tad bit gawdy, but I think they are a very decent team. To win the first means you have Nottelmann coming back tomorrow with a great chance at the sweep. With the Tigers already a two-game series ahead of everyone (except kU), a sweep here really puts the pressure on everyone else to keep pace. Nevermind getting it done on the road.

great win for the young ladies today.
thanks for the updates, beef. doesn’t it seem like maybe our ladies are a little under-ranked? or have we just not hit enough of the “meat” of our schedule to get enough respect yet?

Our schedule was not real heavy this year
There have been years where we have taken on a pretty murderous schedule in OOC, and this was not going to be one of those years. Added to that, we did not win much out in CA on that one trip, and other games against ranked opponents were rained out. Our strength of schedule will naturally rise as the season goes, but starting 1-2 and 3-3 (even though we lost to now #8 Cal and #1 Alabama), we dipped. With the week we have had (especially if we can finish it off tomorrow), I think you will start to see us rise. Also, now that teams get to their conference schedule, many will start to get knocked off.
In the end, I think we are a solid, top-10 team, so I think we are a hair underranked right now, but we have not really defeated many folks in the last month to deserve to start jumping up a ton. That will probably start in the coming weeks, as we will play two games against ranked teams every week until the middle of May and the last week of the season when we play Iowa State.

Thankfully the ranking doesn't matter a whole ton
So long as they hover around that top 10 mark and put themselves in a position to get a seed in the tournament, nothing else matters. They should at the very least be in line to host a regional this May.
But garnering a top 8 seed would be pretty sweet though, and an awesome reward and step forward. Far too early for that kind of talk to be taken seriously, though.
The attendance success from the Super Regional last year would help

A little more on Tech
they came into the game hitting .392 AS A TEAM before the game today, and basically went 3 for 24. Mizzou’s team ERA will drop, but just slightly, as it was 1.07 coming into the game. The Tigers are actually still at the bottom of the barrel in the Big XII in batting average (at .300), though they did bang out 11 hits today in probably 30-32 AB’s (cannot remember exactly)
The Big XII currently has the #7 (OU, will play at home), #10 (UT also at home), #13 (MU), #15 (BU..the next road opponent), #17 OSU (road), #18 NU (road), #19 TTech (currently on road) and #21 aTm (home) in the top 25, with kU (2 votes, played on the road) who was also receiving votes. With ISU the only one not mentioned (as I just remember kSU does not have softball), all the road wins Mizzou can get right now is for the better, as the road will get no easier.

One last, VERY SICK thing
Of the top 15 pitchers in the league, and of which you are talking about some of the best in the nation (Thomas, Luna of UT, Ricketts of OU, Canion of Baylor), NONE of them are seniors. Only three of the 15 (Nottelmann, Hageman of NU and Sisk of aTm) are even juniors. The top 4 (based on ERA) are sophs, and it is Nottelmann at #6.

Ricketts is downright scary
I’d imagine it’s going to be a very low-scoring series when OU comes to town….

Not sure how much I like Thomas in back to back days
I understand the importance of hopefully getting out of the gate 5-1 or 6-0 in these first six road games – but at some point you have to roll with Nasty Notty in critical games, too.
At some point?
Nottelmann has done nothing but pitch in critical games all her career.
I understand what you are saying, but you do have to remember that the ace in softball often does go both games on a weekend. It might be foreign/different to us because of how much depth we have with 1 and 1A starters, but that does not make it bad.

If Thomas didn't have her injury history
then I wouldn’t bat an eye. But I know the point is to make sure she’s still going at the end of the season, and I think it might be good to keep the wear and tear – admittedly far less for a softball pitcher than a baseball pitcher – down here in March.
But I also don’t have day to day access to know just how healthy or not she is right now. I suppose it is possible that she is going back to back days because she’s totally ready to and not because Coach E is stretching to complete an important road sweep.
She could also start the game...
and someone else could finish it….

That is what I figured was going to happen
Thomas for 4 or 5, Notty to close. Maybe Nottelman to pitch the last 4 with a 4-0 lead.
Just the fan being overly cautious is all. I will defer to the judgement of His Stubbleness on the best way to handle his pitching staff.
