Pretty much confirmed by Haith.
http://campuscorner.kansascity.com/node/1779
So…1) I’m pretty sure it’s a violation for Haith to speak on the record about a recruit who hasn’t signed yet, therefore 2) I’m pretty sure, then, that if Haith did send this text, Senor Dearmond wasn’t supposed to actually publish it.
before I go tweet that sources say that Mizzou is going to be in serious trouble
what if the NCAA actually did come down on us for this? I realize it would most likely be nothing more than a reprimand, but talk about some ammo for the Haith Haters and the Alden Should be Fired crew.
I’m almost to the point that I want Haith to succeed to spite some of the fan base as opposed to it actually getting enjoyment from the team being good. There is something fundamentally wrong with that.
Absolutely nothing would come of this from the NCAA

Also, as I stated above, I don’t think anything of any sort of consequence would come, but it would be more volatile as ammunition for crowds who think Alden should be fired and Haith is a sign of the apocalypse (which coupled with Kimmeh’s picture yesterday may actually be true).
OK..but you asked about it from the standpoint of the NCAA
which is what I spoke to.

you think I can’t handle a let down? What I can’t handle are things that exceed expectations. The 2007 football team the 08-09 basketball team are 2 of the more recent examples where I was completely lost. I didn’t know what to complain about. Didn’t know who to blame. It was chaos!!!!!
my guess is the Beef's real name is Seth
and let me tell you that if that is correct the let down is insurmountable. Not because the joke wasn’t funny, but because you have pulled the curtain on The Beef – who I always envinsioned as someone who didn’t exist in this particular universe. Now, he’s just a guy named Seth.
I’m in a full on James Van Der Beek Moment over here.
I'm really hoping
that was an unintentional juxtaposition of “curtain” and “beef.”

Yes, that’s the joke. Because “Seth” is ancient Summarian for th phrase “Beef curtain” as poorly transliterated from greek, based on the mishearing of a Sanskrit pun about toe lint.

whatever, Seth.

I assume that things are said "off the record" all the time.
If I’m misreading that, then yeah, it’s all on Haith.
Well yeah, if DeArmond took off-the-record comments and published them
But what makes you think it was off the record? It’s on the source to request a comment be off the record; if he didn’t, the reporter is free to use whatever he says. And Haith really ought to know that.

Because I figure every coach in the world knows that rule...

But I’ve seen stuff more blatant than that small-ish text being spun to something unrecognizable from the original statement.

So, uh
Still 3 open shollies and 9 in the next 13 months. Just about zero interest from anybody to fill ANY of those 9.
Gulp.
It may not be true behind the scenes
But as a slightly more informed than the average joe (PM subscriber, nothing more) fan – I’ve got to say I’m in a bit of freak out mode right now. Porter is gone, Daniels is unavailable. Who the hell is even out there to fill one of the 3 for this year, let alone finding quality to fill all 3 spots?
Maybe the assistants yet to be named can bring something to the table, but with the ground Haith has to make up I do not envy the work he is going to have to put in over the next year to try and fill those 6 or more scholarships.
There is no doubt that Haith is going to have to work dogged hours to fill these.

The report from Twitter (and "sources")
Is that Miami won’t release him to come to Mizzou. If he gets out of the LOI, he’s going to have to go somewhere that isn’t here, which is a shame. He’d have been a nice pickup.
I didn't know you could contingently release a player from his LOI
I think that whole thing is just jacked up. If I were blessed enough to have a child who was D1 athlete, I would strongly discourage him/her from signing a LOI. It just doesn’t make sense.
It's now going around that a conditional LOI release is indeed not right
Which makes perfect sense.
I don't know enough about the LOI rules

We don’t need to fill schollies just to fill schollies. Is there any flexibility with the schollies? Like let’s say since the rest of ‘11 class isn’t really any good, can we move some of them to next year or the year after that. Strike Two For Frank Haith. He can always work the count, but this can’t be good for his rep.
I'd be okay if we picked up Tony Kimbro
Rivals has him listed as interested, but not sure HOW interested. He’s not a “wow” prospect, but a solid three star guard. Not sure who else is on the radar.
Also, you say “strike two” on Haith. What was strike one?
Actually
It may be getting to the point that we need to fill schollies just to fill schollies. Anderson had already left us in a bind by having unbalanced classes and not filling all 3 scholarships this years is just going to exacerbate the problem.

Could be that Porter hadn't told his coach yet
Information travels so fast, someone with loose lips leaked the info as soon as it happened…could be that Porter’s coach told Gabe that he hadn’t confirmed it with Porter yet, and Gabe initially spun it as “rumors false” rather than “awaiting confirmation.” All about how everyone words everything, ‘cause we’re so sensitive to trying to read between the lines of what everyone says these days.
Gabe's tweet:
“Apologize for the earlier inaccurate tweet on Otto Porter, but the coach did tell me in no uncertain terms he had not committed this AM”
no, he did - at least verbally
Gabe 1st tweeted that he hadn’t and his coach confirmed it. This is the apology. The “innaccurate tweet” was that Porter did not commit to G’Town. He did.
i'm glad you pluralized it
because i’m blaming Mike and Gabe for all of this. Anderson leaving. Not getting Painter. Not getting Porter. Not getting McLemore. All of it is on them! Fire Yost.

I Don't Know
The intracacies of the rules regarding recruits, but is there any way that Haith can make a last ditch effort to get Otto to reconsider leaving home. Ya know, make him feel like Matt Painter. Since he hasn’t signed yet, can other schools still talk to him with committing a violation. Don’t want us to get in trouble.
When?
Was the last time Missouri produced a crop of talent this good? And Mizzou missed on EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. THEM. It gets worse before it gets better I suppose. But this is terrible. Mizzou has a hard time pulling in major talent as it is, when our own backyard finally produced some high major talent, not Mike Dixon/Marcus Denmon types but actual talent that other schools want, and we whiff. Now Mizzou isn’t to blame. We really have to scrape the barrel now. I blame Mike Anderson. No need to fuck over the school over. Get some commitments or something. Get some LOI’s. Then leave. Otto Porter, homebody my ass! I want to stay close to home so bad I’m willing to go to Washington fucking D.C.! Better than kU, I suppose.
Otto Porter is a Mike Dixon/Marcus Denmon type

Not Really
Neither was ranked anywhere near the 30th best player in the class. Marcus Denmon was ranked 150th and Dixon 144th. Not bad players, but not marquee by any stretch of the imagination. Those are three stars. We need more four and five stars, especially if there’s any merit to the statements that Haith can’t develop or actually coach. Imagine we get Beal (4th), Young (15th), and Porter (31st). Those are the caliber of players we need to get in order to keep advancing Mizzou as a program. Haith better be the best recruiter on the face of the Earth. Or else, it don’t look so good. 3 schollies and no one to fill them. Hello Tyler Stone and Jon Underwood. I guess if there were any year to be lean on recruits, this would be it. A senior dominated team should be able to withstand a lack of contribution/talent from the froshes. Haith has to tear it up in 2012 because he won’t be around much longer after that if he doesn’t.
Porter is 97th on the Rivals 150, and he plays against small school competition
I don’t want to be a “he wasn’t all that good anyway” guy, but let’s not overstate things here.

I think we'll reconcile it by winning!
-Kim English
He's actually slowly moved up the rankings
With every passing week. The different scouting services didn’t really have enough info on Porter initially to know exactly what his ceiling was. I think he’ll finish higher than 97th on Rivals when all is said and done.
I thought that was the case.
Doesn’t Rivals redo their rankings after this signing period or sometime this summer?
I think we'll reconcile it by winning!
-Kim English
the silver lining in this
is that Porter will shoot up in Rivals, but it will be after he signed with G’Town, which means people will call a conspiracy that Rivals ranked him high because he is going to G’Town and he would have never been that high had he gone to Mizzou.
Fire Yost.
A coaching transition this media-focused...
is going to turn off some recruits. It’s just part of it. It will get better, give Haith some time to tap into the Missouri crop, before you write him off.
"I like to think of myself as Miguel Paul. Generally disappointing and a waste of space, but every once in a while, WOW."- ghtd36
Also,
How much of the initial negative reaction to Haith’s hire has hurt our recruiting? I’m just spitballing here, but if I were a recruit and I saw that initial reaction to Haith’s hire, my first thought might’ve been “Damn, maybe I shouldn’t go to Mizzou…their coach apparently sucks.” Not every recruit is going to do the research that a lot of us at RMN do after making an initial reaction. Those first moments, where most Mizzou fans were ready to jump off a cliff, may have done some damage to Haith’s initial ability to go after recruits.
by walrusgod on Apr 12, 2011 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
It wasn't just internal mizzou reaction
a lot of the national press / pundits had the same “WTF” reaction to Haith. If I’m an 18 year old kid with a potential shot at a future as a multi-millionaire, then I don’t want to jump into any situation that has the slightest risk of messing up all that future fame and money. If lots of “experts” are making “ho hum” noises about a new coach who has doesn’t have an otherwise obviously sterling track record… Yeah, I’m thinking I’d feel very risk averse and uncomfortable about that, and find a lot of ways of talking myself into thinking I wanted to go to a much bluer blooded program with a far more famous coach. Mizzou can afford to gamble a little on a promising coach who hasn’t just wowwed yet, but whom we have reason to think might. Worst case scenario we can him after 2 or 3 years and move on. An 18 year old NBA hopeful, no way I’m taking that risk, because you only get to be 19 and in college once.
And maybe if I’d built a relationship with a coach over a few years prior, that would get me over this hump… But Haith has only been here a week, he hasn’t had time to build that up in order to compensate for the lack of resume.
Okay, deeeep breaths.
Mizzou was hurt a LOT by Anderson’s leaving. No one’s really 100% sure how much Anderson had already hit the recruiting trail before he left, and it took us a bit to get a new head coach. I’m sad to see Porter choose G’Town, but he chose a storied school with recent regular season success and a coach generally considered to be a very good young-ish coach.
Overreaction Over!
Man, that was ugly. Sorry about that. It was a shock to see that though. I’ll be quiet now…
It stings...no doubt
and in almost any other year and any other circumstances, I am guessing we end up with Porter. But because the deal was never closed by Anderson (not saying it could have been based on how Porter treated recruiting), and because G’Town had been in on him for certainly the 2nd longest, it made sense that he would go with what was comfortable (of what was left, since Anderson was gone).
Advocating for the "Spreadbone" since 2010
Rock M Nation
Two things.
1. This is strange because the last time a coach was in transition we lost a highly touted recruit in Tyler Hansborough. I think it is funny that we assume we would get these guys if Coach A or B was on solid footing but we don’t get them any other time either.
2. It seems very clear that Anderson sold himself in recruiting very well as recruits and their mothers seemed to gravitate to him. For many, he seems to leave out any development of loyalty to the school.
Don’t folks see what Maclin is now as a STL kid who did good at home. He is a folk hero. He can come back to his home state and be adored. Not in a creepy way but in a “he is one of us” way. Kids that leave the state don’t get that and in McLemore’s case, he becomes public enemy number 1 regardless of who his mom roots for.
Don't Haith the player, Haith the game.
The Thing Is...
Now that Haith said Missouri is going to be a priority, but now there’s no one left in Missouri, is that going to make him look bad to STL guys and such who hate Mizzou already? Missouri isn’t usually crawling with big time guys, we’re not completely barren, but Missouri isn’t a basketball hotbed. I’m glad he said it, but maybe he shouldn’t have so soon. I have hope this will get better, but no one ever said I was the brightest either…
It was going to be tough this year for Haith to really get Missouri guys
The only “prime” prospect from MO left once Haith got here and was settled in was, to my knowledge, Porter, who seemed to have gone from a Mizzou lean to a G’Town lean while we were looking for a coach, he just never told anyone. Sure, some people will find a way to spin this as a “Mizzou sux they nvr gonna win!”, but there’s nothing we can really do to help that. Haith just has to keep going at it, and we’ll see how he does with MO prospects next year. Not giving up on this recruiting season, but Haith obviously knows that he has to look out-of-state for this year.
The Only Decent Player In The Class
Next Year from Missouri is already committed to Notre Dame. Now, it’s still early, Otto Porter wasn’t ranked highly/at all until very late into the year, but next year’s Missouri class looks to be of lesser quality than this year’s. We’ll see if any Missouri guys develop and raise their profile. If only Miami would release Bishop Daniels from his LOI, he could come here. That would alleviate some of the concerns I have for the 2011 class. But they won’t and it’s no guarantee he’d even come here if they did.
i'd like to thank sheldon richardson
for teaching me one of the secrets to better mental stability:
do not get too emotionally invested in the college choice of 18 year old kids. they pick who they pick for whatever reason floats through their brains. if they pick mizzou and make it to campus, great. if not, the coaches will find someone else. if they go somewhere else, i don’t care what happens to them unless it affects my team.
on a related note- i don’t care if they come from sikeston or carterville or liechtenstein, i will root for them just like any other tiger. i want players who want to be at mizzou and are excited for the opportunity

It's going to be a long summer . . .
. . . if every time I log on I am hit in the face with some variation of “The Sky Is Falling” meme regarding our basketball program.
At this time we have an experienced D-1 coach with major conference and post-season experience, six average-or-above seniors, all with major conference and post-season experience, and four underclassmen, of which three have major conference and post-season experience.
I think it is time for us to sit back, let Coach Haith and the team know we are behind them, and chill out while things work out, for better or worse – and then react, based on facts and not wild speculation.
I agree. I think we also need to teach
Some people about the term “self fulfilling prophecy.” If you don’t give Haith the tools and support to win, he has that much less chance to win. I’m sure a lot of us will be somewhat more histrionic/angry if a couple years go by and our program stays stagnant/moves backward, but let’s wait until there are cracks in the clouds before we start to talk about the sky falling.
We have a better than 50% shot of a Coach Haith phone interview this afternoon.

Did you tell DeArmond that on the record?
And if so, isn’t that a violation?
Try not to take me too seriously
Ask him why we had a disappointing season this year.
I mean if we are going to blame him for Porter and not getting any big time MO recruits this year, we should blame him for everything. Additionally, ask him we didn’t stop Edney and why no one called timeout after the 4th down in 1990.
How about... "What can we do for YOU, Coach?"
It hasn’t been pretty. It hasn’t been quiet. But Tiger Nation needs to rally. What can the fans here do, other than “just be patient” cause LORD knows we’re NOT good at that.
Bet me!

ask him if he thinks the Dove commercials were influential on Porter's decision.
Does he think that Porter was promised free Dove soap? What type of soap does Haith use? What would the preferred meme of the Haith era be? Can it be soap?
Does he like 5 hour energy?

Might want to ask . . .
. . . why Kimmeh threw his new coach under the bus with this tweet:
“Don’t blame Porter at all. You don’t pick a school going into a blind situation , even if it is your home state school. It’s about comfort.”
Not the kind of thing you tweet when your new coach is still out there trying to recruit player imo.
That's not throwing Haith under the bus
It’s reiterating that Anderson was never able to get Porter’s comfort level up. Kimmie’s just trying to make sure people don’t panic and/or take their anger out at Porter. It’s damage control more than anything.
We really need to, as a group, calm down and stop reading so much into every statement/Tweet that’s made.
Are you #*$%*& kidding me?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coach Haith is out there telling recruits that we’re building a winning program and that Mizzou is going to be a competitive team next year.
And Kimmeh is out there on twitter telling every single recruit that might go to Mizzou “you don’t pick a school going into a blind situation.”
Do you think that is going to help or hurt us with getting any decent recruits?
WTF is Kimmeh doing consoling Otto Porter anyways. Porter turned us down. Kimmeh should be saying that it is Porter’s loss not coming to Mizzou. Seriously, it was a really really stupid comment … and you’re stupid if you don’t see that.
Whoa.
Seems like today’s mantra for everyone should be “remember to breathe.”
How many kids pick a school going into a blind situation? True, seems like Porter didn’t give Haith much of a shot, but it’s likely because he gravitated towards G’Town while we were coachless. I think Kimmie cares a lot about the program, and he was one of the first to take to Twitter to defend Haith when he got here and everyone else was going crazy.
Also, I see how you’ve interpreted it, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is going to interpret it likewise. Could be that someone sees this and goes “wow, those guys at Mizzou are classy, they’re wishing someone well even after he didn’t pick them.” Not saying it will happen, but it could. No real need to call people (especially me) stupid, alright? I understand you see this as a poor choice by Kim, but I was just offering up my view, which was different from your interpretation.

Right outside Mizzou Arena
We need a banner that says “Faith in Haith” and a video screen right beneath it showing an endless loop of Carlton from Fresh Prince dancing.
There isn't one :-)
I just was intentionally misinterpreting your comment.
By the way I agree with walrus’s idea about the Faith in Haith banner, but I think it should be hanging over a gospel choir robed in black and gold singing “Faith” by George Michael in a gospel style. I think that’d get everyone in the mood for some basketball… right? Right?

If you had a better record
I know not everybody
Gets to coach at a good school
But I’ve got to think twice
Before I yell at the TV
And wish Mike Alden a VD
‘Cause you’re coaching our Mizzou
Oh but I
Need to remember Alden signed Pinkel
Earlywine, Pingeton, the Kreklows too
And when Haith comes to town
Without recruits
Well it takes a real Tiger fan
To wait for something more…
Mike said I gotta have Haith, H-Haith, H-Haith
IIII gotta have Haith, H-Haith, H-Haith
Frank Haith
I know you’re trying to get recruits
Say please, please, please, come to Mizzou
Say I’ve got a schollie for you
Maybe
If we stopped talking all this trash
Stopped reacting so dumb and rash
You could bring in a five star or two
If falcons05
Would take a nosedive
Maybe we all could get on board
It’s just the beginning
Let’s start winning
‘Cause Alden says we’ve scored
And you gotta wait for something more
You gotta have faith, f-faith f-faith
Have faith in Haith, H-Haith, H-Haith

He can’t take us to the next level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well oh darn.
I kind of expected Porter to go elsewhere once we lost Anderson though. Haith better get some recruits though. I’d like to get a fifth forward just in case somebody goes down, and so we can ease Green into the rotation.
Rest of the 'Ships
What does the RMN collective want to see for the 3 schollies this year? Any names? Positions? I’m excited to see what Haith can conjure up for the rest of the ‘11 class. If I can get excited for Tyler Stone and Jon Underwood, I think I can get excited for whoever Haith brings in. I saw where someone earlier mentioned Tony Kimbro? He seems like a good athlete that can’t shoot. He’d fit right in…
I think Kimbro would be a perfectly reasonable prospect
I definitely wouldn’t be upset if we had to “settle” for Kimbro. Still absolutely no clue what’s going on with Bishop Daniels (can Miami put conditions on releasing someone from an LOI? Not sure that was completely cleared up earlier) or if he’d even want to come here (that also hasn’t really been addressed).
As for other names, Bill C. had some in a post from a couple days ago…the name I remember is Yvan Ngirabakunzi, partially because it’s a fun name, and he seems like a good 2-star forward who has some potential to grow if he fills out a little bit.
Daniels
Would be a decent consolation prize. I think he’s underrated. His athleticism and scoring prowess should play well in college ball. He’s a smallish combo guy but man can he get up. Kimbro, Daniels, and Ngirabakunzi is no Porter, Beal, Young, but considering the circumstances, I could think of worse. We need someone who can develop guys.

Maybe we can swing a trade. Flip, Kimmie, and Steeeve!. I wonder what Mizzou salary cap situation looks like…
plus, it's reported that Flip wants out of his contract anyway.
It hasn’t been verified, but it’s been out there for a while. We could trade for some future recruiting spots too.
Our cap situation
Should look pretty good. We have quite a few expiring contracts, and Flip seems like he might be willing to waive his no-trade clause if the right team comes calling. We should be in pretty good shape for Paul becoming a free agent after this year…solid pick up at PG.

This Has To Hurt As Well
Not only has the Mizzou fanbase (me included sometimes) been in OH NOES! mode for awhile, especially about Haith, but he isn’t even established here yet, and he doesn’t have a staff. Maybe the kid would love our assistant coaches. But we don’t have any. Once we get our staff together, we’ll see recruiting round into shape. If we can get T.J. Ford or Chris Carrawell, that’d be a step. I don’t know who it is, but we also need an ace X’s and O’s guy. A teacher of the game. He’s out there somewhere.
I'm not sure that
TJ Ford is in the frame still at this point? I think I read that Indiana is now refusing to play Lance Stephenson and now TJ Ford is going to end up playing those minutes…

that the success (or lack thereof) of our bball team this upcoming season will do wonders for recruiting next year. there is no reason why this team shouldn’t be better next year than this past one. in turn, all this bs about the coaching change and losing recruits will seem like ancient history to some teenage recruits. winning cures all ills (except rules infractions), and i can’t wait to see our guys win 30 this next season!
