This is a shoddy analysis
Recall and obsession are two totally unrelated things. You may have poor recall, yet obsess about things in your past that didn’t go well for you. Conversely, you may have a fantastic memory and not obsess about your failures.

A strong memory for domain-specific declarative information isn't at all the same thing
as a tendency to fixate on recent emotional traumas.
If anything a strong ability to remember a lot about football is going to put any recent failures into a much broader and longer context for you, and might make you LESS likely to get unduly upset.
This guy is just full of hot air.
