This man's name is Frank Haith. I'll give you a moment to Google him.
Noted sports blogger and bikini connoisseur Brooks at Sports By Brooks is saying he could be Mizzou's next coach.
Talk amongst yourselves.
UPDATE 10:55pm CT
From the ultra-reliable Joe Walljasper on Twitter:
"Got confirmation that the University of Miami's Frank Haith has agreed to be Missouri's basketball coach."

There is no way this can be true right?
I mean, no offence to Frank and I’m sure he’s a great guy and whatever. But if Mizzou can’t do better than him at this moment in time then we may as give up this whole basketball thing.
what?

I'll admit it
I had to Google him to find out what the hell he has done at Miami. The answer? Not much. Granted, the Hurricanes have an almost historically bad basketball team…but still.
I hate to say this…I’d have rather broke the bank for Alford. I hope either this report isn’t true or Haith activates God mode when he gets here if he is hired, ’cause this is one hell of a “Whaaaaa?” kind of pick.
As I said in the other thread...
If Matt painter was a home run hire, Frank haith is a strike em out/throw em out to finish the season 0-162 type hire.

Yeah, I’m kind of scratching my head over this one too, but 14 wins over ranked opponents in six seasons. Anderson only had 13 in five.
Someone must think he’s a hell of a recruiter or something…

I’m done. Cold turkey. Best of luck. Hope Mike and Frank get along well and win some games. Hope they have success. Wish Kimmie and Marcus and Law all have good senior years.
But I’m gone. Sorry.

Really?
It’s like that?
You’ve got to have some faith that Alden must have had SOME reason for thinking this was going to work. I mean, he could have waited for Stevens or gone after Shaka or Jacobson or Marshall or anyone else. But he didn’t, and you know what? He’s got a pretty good track record when it comes to this sort of thing.
So if you want to be out, I wish you well. Me, while I don’t necessarily agree with the hire, realize that I will never know as much about the situation as Alden does now, and am fascinated to hear his explanation and to see where this goes.
Try not to take me too seriously

allow me to try and talk all of you guys off the ledge! (i said try...)
(just for the record i edit the miami SBN blog, i also graduated from MU in december, so this is really, really weird for me)
alright, the first thing you guys should know is that practically nobody that follows miami baskebtall (all 6 of us) will be sad to hear that frank is leaving. that said i think mizzou fans have to try and take this with an open mind. coaching miami basketball is the equivalent of coaching indiana football. there is zero recruiting base or cache, no fan support, no history (basketball was actually dormant for a long time in the 80s i think) etc. his record is deceiving in this manner, and despite the fact that he was at miami for a while, there are still large institutional biases that make the job very difficult on a year-to-year basis.
the knock on the guy is that he’s a great recruiter but a bad game coach, and there might be some truth in that, but they guy can REALLY recruit. miami had the best center in the ACC last year (going by hollinger’s PER/pomeroy stats), a guy named reggie johnson that frank got out of north carolina, i.e. he wasn’t recruited by duke, UNC, nc state etc. he recruited head to head with uconn for five star PG durand scott, and he won that battle. he managed to get john wall to take an official visit. the guy is going to get really good players at mizzou (he has ties to texas), better than what is there now IMO.
also the team he’s leaving behind is poised to be his best ever (i’m not going to find the links now but most preseason rankings had them in the top 4 in the acc) and i think if we fast forwarded 365 days from now that the hire would look much better.
as for the style of basketball, well the pace is going to be slow and a few years down the road when frank can get his players in there you’re gonna see traditional back to the basket big men and a lot of three point shots. that’s pretty much what we have here, but then things are a bit screwy because the talent is still pretty thin. his teams have had bad hallmarks — a crushing inability to break presses, ironically, terrible road performances etc — but they have also been good at times.
i’m not convinced at all that this is going to work. it could really be a spectacular failure. but miami is a really tough place to win, so tough that leonard hamilton got hired outright to the washington wizards after sweet 16 appearance. if anything, you guys can take solace in the fact that if he does flame out, he will leave good talent behind.

You say hes a great recruiter...
Then say the talent is still pretty then. No offense, but a great recruiter doesnt need more than 7 years to get talent. Especially talent to South Beach.
Annoying You Since 1986
well
“talent is thin” was probably a bad phrase. it’s not so much that the talent is thin but that at a school like miami you end up recruiting a lot of projects that you try to wedge into positions and places that they might not fit. they have, outright, two of the ten best players in the ACC imo (johnson & scott) and some decent talent behind that. it’s a thin team because recruiting in bulk to miami is not easy.
and this is a tough job to recruit too, outside of the weather. keep in mind that — i’m not making this up — they try very hard NOT to have recruits take official visits during the season, because they don’t want to take them to a game where the attendance is under 1,500.

..accepts the AD director at Miami, signs Frank Martin as the basketball coach spot that is now open, and recruits Sheldon Richardson to join the football team for summer practices.
I would be very mad
If any of that happens, but mostly the second thing, I will blame you.
I fully expect whoever the AD is at Miami to give Frank a call, but I’m firmly in the camp that he’s loyal enough to K-State to turn it down immediately. Also, as has been mentioned ad nauseum in this comment thread, Miami isn’t exactly the kind of place that’s going to give him the coaching resources he’s used to.

If you go by the Mayan Calandar, we’ll all be here less than two years anyway…
There is a God and I'm not it, after that EVERYTHING is subjective. Be careful for what you wish for, you just might GET IT!
It all makes sense.
This hire must have been made for the same reason the Phillies signed Ryan Howard to that insane contract. It won’t matter after 2012!
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
I'm not sure he gets 5 years
He’s going to have to do it in 3 or he’ll be canned. And by he’ll be canned I mean Alden will be canned and Haith with him.
Alden has staked his job on this hire.
This actually makes me somewhat optimistic
He must have seen SOMETHING in Haith. And, to be honest, are we sure this is worse than Sutton/Jacobson/Marshall? With those guys, we don’t know if we’ll ever get players.
Honestly, anything after the Painter debacle would have seemed like a letdown. This doesn’t strike me as as much of a letdown as some other hires would.
Try not to take me too seriously

Those guys were guaranteed mediocrity… at least with this guy there’s an outside chance at an X factor.
WHAT IF…. WHAT IF his ability to pull the big recruit is layered on a new ability to get a full roster of players that don’t suck, and that this improves his ability to do sensible in-game coaching….
Ok it’s reaching for straws, but maybe the alternative was a world without straws??

Positive thinking about Haith, it’ll take some work, but we’ll get there…eventually…hopefully.
goddamnit I wish Rose and Stephen A. Smith would for once not play the race card
Especially in a situation like this where it makes absolutely no sense.

I guess that guy knows what he’s talking about, and was under no obligation to say any of those nice things…
and if (pulling together the OPTIMISM!!1) there’s a tendency to pay too much attention to wins and losses in how we judge coaches, and heavily underweight how stacked the deck was, or the role luck plays in getting those records, then maybe we’re finding the undervalued asset here… Yeah…. this was a move of genius arbitrage…. yeah….. yeeeah. YES.
yeah
Reminds me of Gene Chizik hiring at Auburn...
I would imagine this is how Auburn fans felt when they hired Gene Chizik.
Somehow I don’t think the results will be the same…
There should be more racism with this hire

You're the second person who's made that claim.
The difference is that Chizik had a track record of success as a coordinator, while there’s no good comparison to that for college basketball.
Chizik and Haith are apples and oranges, if you ask me.

Actually, if there's anything to Haith it is his time as an assistant
He’s been on some pretty good staffs.
Associate HC and Assistant HC at Texas (lead recruiter on Aldridge and TJ Ford I think)
Assistant at Wake and Penn State
"Those who fear disorder more than injustice inevitably produce more of both." -- Rev. William Coffin
we once had another coach who was from a pretty good staff...
and that didn’t turn out so great.

Clearly this is an attempt to get a good recruiter
From his bio: Haith has recruited six McDonald’s All-Americans including Rodney Rodgers (1990) to Wake Forest, Jerald Brown (1995) to Texas A&M and Brad Buckman (2002), LaMarcus Aldridge (2004), Daniel Gibson (2004) and Michael Williams (2004) to Texas.
With a total of nine scholarships to give this spring and next fall, let’s hope he can do what he supposedly does best.
To be fair, it was other coaches who wasted those guys
And when 2/3 of your McD’s All Americans get to play for Rick Barnes….
Throwing gasoline on the fire..
Alden elected not to wait for a possible chance to talk to Shaka Smart. Mizzou sources tell me that Alden had no interest in bidding against NC State for Smart’s services. A Big 10 head coach told me tonight Alden’s search was hindered by a perception that he was lowballing candidates.

We offered two coaches $2 million or more. Then got cheap? Not buying it.
Yeah I'm not sure I buy the lowballing thing
But to not even wait a couple of friggen days to talk with Smart or Stevens.
That is just a godawful move, Alden.
I believe he meant candidates after Painter.
At least we know he wasnt the #2 candidate.

Yeah...
I’m with shaffe on this— Doesn’t make sense that we suddenly go cheap after making a strong play to start out… especially in order to make a potential job-ending hire on Alden’s part…

This is an awful hire. He has shown NOTHING! He’s not that young. From all I’ve heard, he’s a terrible game coach. He’s pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum from Matt Painter. His teams will be a pain to watch. Alden went from being a straight boss to straight bitch in a week’s time. This is seriously fucked up! Why us? Now we’re most likely stuck with a piece of shit coach. Matter of fact, I’d rather have a piece of shit as coach than Frank Haith. Like, literally fragmented feces opposed to Coach Haith. Unless there is a plan. Have this supposed ace recruited stock up on the beasts with all those open schollies. Have him suck for a year or two. Hire new actual coach to coach guys up and win. Farfetched? Yes. Unlikely? You betcha! Sensible? More so than hiring Frank Haith and giving him a raise. He makes Kim Anderson look like a good hire. Ugh!

Not sure if this is mentioned
But he has two 4 stars committed on Rivals for 2012. Although one is from FL and one from GA (both nearby)
He has a lot of interesting recruiting bases (NY, NC, FL) from what I can tell.
Wait. So this is serious?
Like not a two day delay on April fools?
Ok.

I know I'm in the minority here, especially with emotions running high
But I’m OK with this. (Hear me out)
The guy is, at best, a master recruiter and, at worst, a capable one. This despite being at a mediocre basketball school that gets pummeled every year by the big dogs of the ACC. He even has a couple of big-time commits that MarioVanPeeples just mentioned that very well could be coming with him.
At Mizzou, he might be an even better recruiter. When was the last time we got a McD All-American? Keyon Dooling? That was 12 years ago. If we want to compete with Kansas and Texas year in and year out, it’s going to take players. We don’t know that Ben Jacobson or Gregg Marshall or Wojcik would be able to do that.
Also, as mentioned above, Alden is staking his reputation and quite possibly his job on this hire. Does he strike you as the kind of guy who panics? Me neither. He thought about this and decided that it’s what’s best for the program, on an academic, athletic and commitment basis. Frank Haith is an Elon grad. If he has success at Mizzou, he’s not going anywhere else soon or possibly ever.
I know this is completely out of left field and we like to be prepared for our news, but honestly, compared to the possible alternatives (perhaps Shaka included, and I would like to hear Alden’s explanation for not even talking to him), Haith is more of a sure thing. Based on what we know about recruiting, he might have a higher ceiling, too.
Thanks for listening. Breathe, drink, get some sleep, give it half a freakin chance. Bill C will talk us down in the morning, but I hope this is at least a start.

I am with you. It is time for calm.
But it was not me who knows anything about his commits. :)

I think we are all going to give him a chance
And we’d all be tickled pink if he did work out. But nobody can find a reason right now to think that Haith is going to get it done at Missouri.
As a devil’s advocate to the Alden staking his rep thing, he’ll have at least two more years of making fat AD money to put away for retirement. If I’m him I’m putting away a little extra every month into my 401(k).
I think his job is most definitely on the line

Sorry, but no
He has a track record of abject failure at Miami, both on and off the basketball court. Players in legal trouble and making the NCAAs once in 7 years is just not acceptable. Could he be a good coach? Sure, he could. For now, he has shown himself to be mediocre verging on bad. On paper, he is Quin Snyder with less wins. Sorry for not being thrilled with that. Of course I love Mizzou and of course when basketball season starts I’ll tune in and root for Denmon and the guys… But unless he wins immediately, I will still consider this a bad hire.
by u2nspenserfan on Apr 4, 2011 1:29 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
The Snyder comparison is just not a good one. Snyder had significant non-basketball problems that blew things apart.
Yes he did
Hence me saying “on paper”. Gets recruits, doesn’t develop them, doesn’t win, legal trouble around the program… Things like that.
by u2nspenserfan on Apr 4, 2011 1:43 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
This guy has made it a lot more years than Snyder did as a head coach without developing the same off-court issues. So no, I’m not worried about him following Quinn’s route. I have OTHER worries, but those are completely different than the Snyder worries… meaning it’s not a good comparison.
I never said he has the same off-court issues as Quin
Or anything of the sort. I’m saying the career path (assistant to head coach, supposed recruiting phenom who doesnt win or develop players) and results on the court and in terms of trouble players are similar, with Quin actually having won more. So, yes it’s valid to compare the two. Are they exactly the same? Of course not.

No sense pleading for calm tonight
Almost no matter who we hired people were going to be anywhere from mildly displeased to downright disgusted. (For the record, I was a Tim Floyd guy—and I still feel dirty somehow.)
Haith seems to have blown the floor out of the bottom of the scale, taking us from disgusted to projective vomit.
However…
Miami is a wasteland. It’s a mid-major in a power conference. I doubt it’s better than any MVC job because none of those gigs is so actively undermined by football. Haith was a well-regarded assistant who took a crap job, and has been paying his dues.
I’m not happy about the hire, but I also doubt that Alden all of a sudden got a brain aneurysm. What did he see that was compelling? Clearly it was his recruiting; a top 25 rated class (ESPN) according to the website. We know he also got serious players as an assistant under some good coaches at Texas, A&M, and Wake. His rosters at Miami have been top-heavy, and no one wins in the ACC with 1 or 2 players no matter how good they are.
Alden clearly thinks he needs a guy who can hit the bricks and bring in players ASAP, and Haith has as good a record in that regard as any candidate. Obviously, the big question is about what he can do with talent once he gets it. That record is not so good. One thing I’ll say in that regard Mizzou may be in a position to compliment him in a way that Miami would (could) not, and that’s in constructing a staff.
I won’t feel good about this hire until I hear some things from some people I trust, but I at least can see the thinking. As for Haith being a surprise… I’m not at all surprised that the hire ended up being a guy no one was talking about. I was saying that last week.

Oh my God.
Well, at least nobody’s going to ever accuse me of being a bandwagon fan now.
Hmmm
I don’t even know what to say.
Hopefully the limitations at Miami kept him from putting a winning product on the court, but this really isn’t looking good.
I think we'll reconcile it by winning!

What an epic year of basketball this turned out to be. Lose top recruit in class to eligibility issues. Lose to ku twice. Lose Mike Anderson. Have yet to secure a single player from one of the few classes where the state of Missouri produced some big time talent. .500 in conference. 1 road win in conference. Get shit on by Matt Painter. Why even bark up that tree, Alden? G’Town game. Bounced from the NCAA’s in the 1st round. Hire Frank Haith. It wasn’t a BAD year necessarily. Can’t really say that when you make the tourney. But man did it go south quick. Here’s to blind luck! And great assistant coaches!
Get shit on by Matt Painter. Why even bark up that tree, Alden?
Ok now you’re just being an ass. Alden nearly reels in a monster fish that nobody thought was even in our league, and is underdone by a last minute burst of homesickness and a (close-enough) matching offer from the guy’s alma mater. That’s not getting shit on, that’s working Pujols to a 3 and 1 before he gets to first on a fielder’s error. You were performing above spec, but were foiled by something that wasn’t your fault. Just give frickin’ over man.
I woke up to see this. I am going back to bed and hoping it all goes away.
I never thought I’d say “worse than Steve Alford” but I just did. Haith, prove me wrong and I will worship at your basketball altar.

Maybe I'm just being naive
but the more everyone hates this hire, the more confident I get in it.
We are going to listen to Waylon now so everybody stfu and drink your beer.
Just Brutal
What in the hell Alden. You have completely crushed the hopes and expectations of what seems to be about 90% of your fans. Thanks for nothing.
So this morning, I think I got over the initial shock/disappointment.
I think after reading the reports about Miami being a blackhole for coaches, maybe he just needed a fresh start. Maybe if he finally gets the support of the fans and an athletic department, he can have some success. He’s been hired as our coach. We can’t change that. He’s coming back to the Big 12, where he has experience at Texas. We’ve got to give him our full support so he can be as successful as possible here. He may not have been out first, second, hell probably not even our fifth choice, but he’s our guy.

The press conference by Alden right after xCMA became a pig,
Mike had the noble words that Mike Anderson helped us get to this level and now we want to get to the next level in looking for a new coach. We all bought in when he seemingly went for the fences with Painter. The idea of being aggressive and still eyeballing those fences was the taste we all had. Haith…… not the kind of fence I was thinking we were eyeballing. I am still looking who is heading for the warm up pens.
by McZou on Apr 4, 2011 6:51 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
It also seems the coach cash snow ball started with the Tiger-pig fight for xCMA
Once the world caught wind of Mizzou’s big offer to keep Anderson and the hogs higher offer to get him, it was a “Wow, that is some money!”. Then, with the world knowing what we were willing to pay, Mizzou took that sum and waved that carrot for Painter. After that failed, the list of coaches that warranted that high of pay was becoming increasingly smaller. To try to bring that offer amount back down to a “standard” level, I wondered when Alden could keep justifying that offer. In the world where info is so easy to get, everybody knows how much Mizzou has to give. How do you tell a new coach, “We need to get to the next level and need a coach that can get us there..<> yes, about what we offered Mike Anderson and Matt Painter….um…. Haith, for you, we were thinking a little less but we still expect longetivity, loyalty and higher success academically and athletically”, since Haith’s stock is currently not worth 2.2 million a year.
