Saturday Live Thread!
Apologies, Rock M'ers. I'm falling behind on my writing a bit, thanks mostly to the food-and-allergy buzz/coma I had going on most of the day. (Indian Tacos! 50 MPH wind gusts! Old lady dance routines! It's the Oklahoma City Arts Festival!!) Looks like I'll need another day to polish off the Wall of Excellence, Vote No. 6 ("Personalities/Coaches/Administrators") lineup, though it'll be worth waiting for. In the meantime ... all-day live thread!
9:00 AM CT
EPL: Sunderland vs Fulham (ESPN2)
11:00 AM CT
NFL Draft, Day Three (ESPN)
Possible Mizzou draft candidates: Tim Barnes, Andrew Gachkar, maybe Kevin Rutland?
2:00 PM CT
Softball: No. 8 Mizzou at No. 16 Oklahoma State
(Series Preview, Gametracker for Today)
Baseball: No. 6 Texas A&M at Mizzou
(Series Preview, Walk-Off for Mizzou Last Night, Gametracker for Today)

Softball: Oklahoma-Texas (ESPN)
So what does everybody think of the draft so far? I tend to give the Patriots the benefit of the doubt, but I have little idea what to make of their haul so far. Also: I think the Lions are going to be very good, very soon. (Unless that whole "They're the Lions" thing gets in the way, anyway.)

Rock-a-thon 2011 is coming to a close at 10:00 tonight. If you’ve driven by ninth and broadway the past few days you’ve seen Lenny on the stage and 98 other brothers around Columbia, Jeff City, Fulton, Mexcio, and even St. Charles and Overland Park collecting donations for the American Cancer Society. Even Kimmie’s in on it…check out his twitpics from last night! If you haven’t donated yet, please come find one of us today; if you have, we sincerely appreciate it. Thanks again to everyone at RMN, and #beatcancer!
Great moments...are born...from great opportunity.
And that's what you have here...tonight, boys.
That's what you've EARNED here, tonight.

As much as I'm enjoying laughing at them AND the Big 10
(and I am REALLY enjoying it. A lot.) This is really, really bad for them. AAU membership kinda feeds on itself, once you’re no longer a member, grant writers tend to stop noticing you when they’re writing checks and high-level grad-students stop applying to you because they want to go to an AAU institution.
Ok, no, still laughing.

We always knew it was about football
When Illinois ragged on Mizzou’s academics and then voted for Nebraska, it showed what the Big Ten was really interested in.

That is true to a certain extent.

If there's anyone out there who believed that this wasn't 99% about football, they're idiots
But, the Big 10 likes to trumpet their major academic cred, and they did so during the expansion last season. It’s certainly not sad to see this blow up in their face in an embarrassing way. I have no doubt that the CIC will accept Nebraska into its membership, but I am curious what having a non-AAU member will do for the reputation of the CIC.

I like the KC Chiefs picking up Stanzi in the fifth round
Stanzi will be a capable backup (more capable than Croyle), and who knows, maybe he turns into a decent QB and takes over for Cassell in a few years. Stanzi is one of those solid but unspectacular guys that I love to see teams pick up in the later rounds of the draft.
Cassel will be there for a long time, though.
Stanzi will be one of those guys who spends 5 or 6 years in the league as a back-up, 3rd stringer, and practice squad member for 4 different teams.

Don't say a word.
The words you write on the internet have a direct effect on the outcome of the game.
Schweisberger tries to bunt, gets it down, catcher throws it away or something (can't tell on gametracker)
and Hudson scores and 2 now have runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs and Cat Lee at the plate.
Yep, 3-0. 2 of them are unearned, but you have to take advantage of your opportunities.
We’re doing a good job of that and scoring on a fairly good pitcher (although she’s not great).
The Patriots and Eagles made a trade
The Patriots get pick #194
The Eagles get pick #193
These two teams have made a draft-day trade every year since 2000….TWELVE STRAIGHT YEARS.
And the Jets draft pick in the 5th round shows what some around Como already knew…Brad Smith does not want to return to the New York Jets.

The Jets are my least favorite NFL team.
It’s pained me to have to cheer for Brad while he’s been wearing that uniform.
So, they swapped picks...solely to keep the streak alive?
Is this some sort of GM humor? How exactly does it help either team to swap those picks besides simply keeping the trade streak alive?
Oh, and I hope Brad Smith leaves the Jets…I just can’t root for them, and unless he goes to Dallas I’ll probably be okay with wherever he ends up. There are quite a few teams that could use someone like Smith.

ESPN still won't give them an "F" for their hire.
And I’m not kidding…don’t remember who it was, but one of ESPN’s experts gave our Haith hire an “F”. Only one other grade was even below a C-, I think. Ridiculous considering Haith has been here for less than a month.
Looking just at the hire, it's hard to disagree.
But who else could we have gotten that’s any better? All the best coaches stayed at their schools. He could do really well, which would make him a good hire, but right now he’s a bad hire until he proves he does well.
Exactly.
I mean, I’m willing to give the hire a D or D+ for initial PR…Alden should’ve anticipated the response to the hire a little bit more. That being said, it’s not like we said “I’m sorry Mr. Painter, we’d rather go with Haith.” And it’s not like we hired a local high school coach to come in with no college experience (although something tells me some people at ESPN would’ve respected it more, for whatever reason).
I think the only name that needs to be said is Rick Barnes. Sure, Rick Barnes had a slightly better resume than Haith coming in (slightly), but he wasn’t exactly top of the world, and he’s led Texas to their best run of tournament appearances in their history.
Again, not saying Haith is a great hire, but jeez, let’s let the man coach for a season before giving this an “F”.
And it's also not like he didn't get Painter and then rushed to pick anybody that could coach basketball.
Lots of coaches have slow starts to their career, and Haith certainly was a fine assistant before having some rough luck at Miami when he started being the head coach.
Anticipated the response?
What exactly was Alden going to do about the response? What did he do poorly regarding the response?
That does not make any sense to me
Advocating for the "Spreadbone" since 2010
Rock M Nation
Alden specifically said that
He knew there would be a negative reaction to the hiring, but he didn’t anticipate the level of vitriol that came following the hiring. I’m not sure there was much Alden could have done, but I’m wondering if there IS something he would’ve done differently had he been able to anticipate just how bad the initial reaction to Haith would be.
I really like Alden, and think he’s done a wonderful job. I also think he’s good enough with the PR thing that, had he correctly assessed the response to Haith, he might have come up with some way to temper the immediate outcry. I’m not necessarily trying to say that Alden did anything wrong, and I realize that’s how my post came across. Should’ve worded it better.
I guess I just did not understand your criticism
It’s not like Alden was in any position to do or say anything to otherwise change the reaction. It simply was what it was. Sure, he can say he was surprised, but the reaction and handling it was totally out of his control.
Advocating for the "Spreadbone" since 2010
Rock M Nation
I appreciate that Alden likes keeping things close to the vest
And doesn’t leak things out. I really do. I just think the hiring coming out of left-field after we spent all week hyping ourselves up to different options made the “fall” from getting Haith worse. I mean, there’s a chance that this really was the best way, and that things actually could’ve been worse than they were. I fully understand that. I guess I just wonder, had Alden anticipated the response, would he have found a way to reign the fans in before announcing the hiring? I’m not saying I have any great idea, it was more a moment of wondering out loud whether Alden could’ve handled the pre-hire stage better. Honestly, there might not have been (hell, probably wasn’t) a better way to do things. I was just wondering whether us knowing what was going on just a little bit more would’ve made the response to Haith less cataclysmic.
I’m definitely not saying anything could be done in the post-hiring differently. It was done as well, if not better, than I could’ve expected.
The "out of left field" thing is perplexing to me
So…you are upset then that you were surprised and did not get to make up your mind about it before it actually happened? To that end, do you really believe that had you (the royal “you”) known about it, that you would have been able to impart any sort of desired change?
I guess I just dont understand the thought that anyone DESERVED to know about this until it actually happened.
And how could Alden have possibly reigned in the fans before the hire?
I just dont see how any of what you are talking about is in any way realistic, even in this digital, social media, guerrilla-marketing world. Yes, the process with Painter afforded people the chance to make up their mind about it before it ever could have happened. The process was not the same with Haith, but that does not mean someone is potentially at fault or should be criticized for it.
Mind you, I am not saying Alden should not potentially be criticized FOR the hire (though I dont feel he should be), but the notion he should be criticized for HOW he made the hire just rings really hollow and unrealistic.

I'm not saying I'm necessarily upset about it.
I’m simply throwing out hypotheses on situations that I’m unsure of. I don’t think we have any entitlement to know, but some people do believe it. I personally don’t hold this as a negative against Alden how this was handled. I think that he handled everything extremely well, and when I think hard about it, the initial outcry may have actually been good for the Haith hire, ‘cause it means everyone who really cares took the time to look at Haith’s numbers and were able to make an informed judgment about it rather than the initial “Who is Frank Haith?” reaction.
I really haven’t given this a lot of thought…it was simply a musing about a possible situation. I’m not saying I personally have any investment in this idea. I like the Haith hire, I was just wondering whether there even could have been any difference in reaction had something been done differently.
Although it is unrealistic to start blaming Alden for things like this, people DO often have unrealistic expectations, especially when it comes to athletics. I’m not saying any of this SHOULD have a negative impact on Alden (I realize I’ve used the word “should” many more times that I really have meant to, and this may end up being one again), I guess I just wonder if anything COULD have made this any different. The answer is almost certainly “no,” but that doesn’t always stop me from asking, just to see what others think.

I’d say give it more thought next time :-)

Strikeout numero trece (13) ends the game.
We’re now 11-2 in conference. Tonight at 7, Oklahoma visits Texas on ESPN. We’re rooting for OU hard, because at 7-6 they’re no threat to win the Big 12, but they still have a good team and a win or two as a spoiler this weekend would go a long for Mizzou wrapping up the title.
We’re back at it tomorrow at noon, play Western Illinois twice on Wednesday (get revenge for the near-upset in basketball), and then we have Texas at home next weekend for 2 HUGE games. I’ll be at the first game on my first trip ever to University Field, and the second game is on ESPN for the whole nation to watch. Can’t wait.
I would guess the tiebreaker would be head-to-head, right?
If we win out, we and Texas would have 2 losses, both of their losses would be against us. We’d get the championship.
But, in the unlikely circumstance that they should lose both of these games against OU, split against us, and both teams end up with 3 losses, any idea what the tiebreaker is?

From Big12sports.com:
Tiebreaker: Ties in the Conference standings shall be broken utilizing the following procedures:
a. Head-to-head competition of tied teams;
b. Run differential of tied teams;
c. Run differential of all Conference games;
d. Won-loss record versus the highest-standing team or teams not involved in ties, commencing with the highest-standing team;
e. Overall record;
f. Coin toss.
That was from 2009 so the rules might have changed, but that’s all I can find.
