Chelsea Thomas did NOT win National Player Of The Year
As a top-3 finalist for the ASAUSA National Player of the Year, Chelsea was about as close as any Missouri Student Athlete has ever come to being named their sport's National Player Of The Year (as far as I can tell). But, alas, she did not win, the winner, instead, is Stanford Jr. Ashley Hansen.
Ashley Hansen - 2B Junior from Chandler AZ. #15 Stanford lost 2 games to 1 against Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional.
Hansen's line from this season (bear in mind, this is in one of the two best conferences in the country)
GP: 59 (all of her team's games)
Avg: .495 in 192 AB , good for 3rd in the country. (2nd on team: .398)
Hits: 92 lead the nation
25 doubles lead the nation (2nd on team: 9)
9 HR (2nd best on team, best was 10)
45 RBI (2nd best on team, best was 49)
Total Bases 153 (2nd best on team: 104)
SLG: .797 (17th nationally) OB: .558 (8th Nationally) - OPS: 1.335
Fielding %: .959
So, I GUESS it was a decent choice.

Just for fun, Chelsea's national rankings as of 5/22/11:
K/7 – 10th nationally (10.3)
Total Ks – 7th nationally (342)
Walks/7 – 18th nationally (1.21)
Wins – T-7th nationally (29)
Shutouts – T-6th nationally (12)
Hits per game – 6th nationally (3.38)
ERA – 2nd nationally (0.82)
342 Ks to 40 walks
Opposing team batting average .141
Congratulations to both of these young ladies for tremendous years.

I think her ERA actually leads the nation after this weekend. Jolene Hednerson for Cal got roughed
up for 7 or 8 runs this weekend.
it's all relative
the offensive player who SHOULD have won last year hit .568 with 29 bombs, 70-some RBI and stole 20 bases. danielle lawrie won instead. chelsea has a better ERA, better K/7 and better BB/7 than lawrie did last year. if the offensive player (jen yee), who had what is widely considered the best offensive season in the history of d1 sball, couldnt win, then why should an offensive player win now over a pitcher who put up similar/better numbers than last year’s winner?
and stanford didnt make the world series. i could’ve lived with the ASU girl winning, but the stanford girl winning is kind of comical, imo.
I see your point if this were the MLB and there was the debate over the word "valuable".
But not making the WCWS shouldn’t have any bearing at all on this award. They are simply making an attempt at finding the best overall player in the country.
Chelsea had a hell of a year (one for the ages). But this is absolutely no slight to her.
sucks to be a mizzou fan.
we never get to win anything. MIZ-ERY!
