Pretty impressive
That’s he’s still able to nail down these recruits despite all of the allegations. Damn impressive.

One substantive allegation.

Doesn't mean much if Haith gets fired and these recruits de-commit.
I don’t understand how Haith is able to convince these guys that he will for sure be here in the future.
maybe because he knows that he will be?
He has denied any wrongdoing, the player from Miami has denied the allegations, that player’s mother has denied the allegations, the asst coach accused of perpetrating the act has denied the allegation, there’s no proof it ever happened, and all we have is the word of a convicted con-man to go on.
People may want to believe that where there’s smoke, there’s fire, but sometimes it is in fact dry ice. It’s entirely possible that Frank Haith did nothing wrong and just got hit with some splash damage when the proverbial shit hit the fan.

Possible, but it's gotta be tough to pitch that to potential recruits.
Plus, even if he’s innocent of the payment he still could get fired for simply being good friends with Shapiro. Randy Shannon was smart enough to know that Shapiro was a bad guy, so he purposely stayed away and told his players to stay away. Haith embraced Shapiro and basically became his good friend that took him to strip clubs and spent thousands of dollars for him. That alone could spell his demise, considering MU might look at that and say that if Shannon was weary of Shapiro then Haith should have been too.
If it's so tough
why has he gotten commitments from two solid prospects in the last week?
And you have absolutely zero personal knowledge of the situation, yet you’ve characterized Haith as an idiot. Well done!
No, I just said that he's already done enough to get himself fired by hanging with Shapiro.
I don’t know what’s really happening, but by the way Randy Shannon treated Shapiro it looks like it would have been wise for Haith to do the same thing. There’s no way to prove that Haith thanked Shapiro for an illegal payment, but it’s pretty obvious that Haith spent a lot of time with a very shady person. When you pick your friends badly, you end up in a bad situation.
No one has proven the strip club allegation
And one of the responsibilities of a major head coach is meet and greets with powerful boosters. How do you think everyone has “sources” (!) now? Haith’s contact with Shapiro could just as easily been made in passing by at team events, in quick texts and phone calls to say “hey”, or any type of normal contact that all people have.
And you seem to know everything that Randy Shannon did from a few media reports. Great.
It’s a freakin’ felon’s word against an upstanding citizen. Glad you are choosing to side with the felon.
Shapiro's claims of hanging out with Haith at certain locations
are all backed up by financial facts. They clearly were really good friends. And I don’t know everything about Randy Shannon, but those media reports have info from a former Miami worker that said Shannon warned his players about Shapiro. And the report came from the Miami rivals website, so it’s reputable.
No one proved by financial records that Haith was in a strip club
just that Shapiro was.

I’m agreeing with you that the financial records were Shapiros’ however I am expanding on the idea that it is some how bad that Haith was at a Strip Club getting stuff paid for himself. That is not a big deal.

agreed.
There’s no proof Haith was at a strip club, only conjecture and people willfully connecting dots on their own.
But like you said, if Haith was at a strip club with a booster so what? If that is supposed to get you fired, you’re now enforcing morality and that’s completely unfair. What if instead of a strip club Haith was alleged to have been in a casino in Atlantic City or Vegas and Shapiro was giving him money with which to gamble? Is that better, worse, the same? What if instead of a strip club or a casino it was alleged that Shapiro and Haith had a weekly meeting at a 5-star steak house in Miami and Shapiro routinely bought $500+ worth of food and drinks for Haith ever week? Is that better, worse, the same?
The answer is they’re the same, and the further answer is those activities aren’t against the rules. If you can’t prove he broke the rules, you can’t just say “Well, yeah, but he was doing other stuff I don’t approve of so that means he’s guilty.”

Agreed, it's perfectly legal and he can do that if he wishes
The tough part is the way that Mizzou’s sold his character up to this point. That was the tactic chosen by Alden and the university to celebrate his hire, and it is fine by me. But hey, one maniac can make one accusation and absolutely crush that character to pieces…true or not.
It really, really frustrates me that one of the biggest jock-sniffing narcissists in modern American history can say something and cause this firestorm. There is a lot of smoke, and fire, around the Miami football allegations, but as Dave said earlier, this is looking like dry ice. And people are believing Shapiro! With NO VALID EVIDENCE on this allegation! Unbelievable.
i'll go ahead and disagree.
if my men’s head basketball coach is at a strip club, i have a problem with that. i hold him to a higher standard being a highly visible representative of my university (insert miami bball coach not being highly visible here). i think it reflects badly on the way my school is viewed.
"My friend! My friend!" You big crybaby. Go bury him in the yard before he stinks up the place.
There is a degree to this point as well.
..but I can not see this being terms of termination, while he was at another school.
If it’s recurring at Mizzou and it ends up being the, " Which Strip Club is Frank Haith at now?" game than sure it begins to get more visible. The real crux (for me) is that he was not at Mizzou when this happened. The secondary is that he was at a strip club, which should not be a big deal.
In fact it should not have even made it out in public except for a snitch in jail, that is throwing a fit.

You don’t want to fire a guy for running with the wrong crowd, especially at this point in time, but it definitely would be warranted if MU did decide to fire him.
Oh my goodness...really?
Mizzou could fire him right now? So, let me guess…you’re going to cover the multi-million dollar wrongful termination lawsuit that Haith would win if he comes out of this sparkling, but gets fired anyway? You must be as good of a booster as Falcons.

I don't want Mizzou to fire him right now for hanging out with Shapiro.
But I certainly wouldn’t say that it would be unjust to fire him considering everything we know about how Randy Shannon was smart enough to stay away from Shapiro.
I think Haith’s association with Shapiro has already made the university look bad. If Mizzou wanted to fire him, they could.

There certainly is already justification for a firing if Mizzou wants to; I don’t think there’s really any doubt about that.

Yes. It would be a terrible decision that could potentially set our program back two or three years.
by CBonerfied on Sep 1, 2011 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I agree with you to an extent, and let me expand on this.
If Mizzou really wants to be exact with their interpretation of the contract then ( I am not trained in contract law) I guess they could get rid of him.
How safe are they against a wrongful termination suit? I do not know.
Aside from legal actions if Haith is fired now the repercussions are not just about having a basketball team play well this next season.
To other coaches that Mizzou is about to hire, it will be perceived as a school that is unwilling to support their coach. It will be increasingly difficult to hire another coach at Mizzou, as if it is not hard already.
by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Sep 1, 2011 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
EXACTLY!
We fire Haith now, we’re not supporting our guy. That will resonate with coaching candidates everywhere. People think this last coaching search was difficult? Good luck replacing Haith under these circumstances.
And to players and potential recruits, how do you explain his firing? “We fired him because he might have done something wrong”? For Marcus, Kimmie, L-Bow, Steve, Cardo, and M.Press, you’re likely sacrificing their senior seasons because of some a-hole’s allegations? For Jorgenson, Shawn Smith, Scales, Coger, and possibly Purvis, House, and Wainright, you’re firing the guy who brought them aboard over a flimsy allegation? Good luck keeping those commitments.
Rick Pitino is still coaching after his eventful summer last year. Calipari puts programs on probation and gets more and more money. And understanding that those two are two of the better coaches in college basketball, that point stands nonetheless. Yet some fans are trying to fire a guy who, quite possibly, has done NOTHING wrong?!?!?!
Ridiculous.
by CBonerfied on Sep 1, 2011 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions 4 recs
I would keep him around if only for the sake of the seniors who've given so much to the university
but it is a valid point that Missouri is taking a large risk by standing behind Frank Haith.
Thanks for reminding me.
What’s worse. A coach goes to a strip club with a booster, maybe.
Or… a coach cheats on his wife by banging some chick, not in a hotel room, but in a restaurant. And then arranges some bs marriage to an assistant coach. And then she tries to extort millions from him. And THEN it all hits the paper.
Compared to the Miami football program, the Haith allegation is like looking at a zit on a guy covered with 3rd degree burns.

i love me some bte
i’ve told this story here before, but…
went to see them at the blue note on halloween ‘97… most awesome show i’ve ever been to… they came out in full devo gear w/ flower pot hats… opened with whip it and workin in a coal mine… payed a 45 min encore with bits of every cool ’80s tune you could think of…
good times. i’ve seen them probably 10 times since. very good band, especially live

I have seen them somewhere around 6-8 times as well
first time I saw them was at the Blue Note in ’03. I had always liked them before, but seeing them in concert brought it to another level. Since then, I have traveled to Mardi Gras in NOLA to see them (their Mardi Gras shows are insane), and I have seen them in numerous states. Yep, giant nerd here.
That Devo scene must have been awesome.
i've never been to nola for mardi gras
but if i ever do, i will make sure to catch one of their shows. i have a dvd that was filmed in nola, not sure if it was mardi gras or not.
i’ve seen them in aspen (great venue- up close), vail, several times in denver and vegas a couple of years ago at the silverton casino. kg joked about the big bass pro shop attached to the casino.
my ultimate goal in life is to be the guy that gets up on stage and plays ‘this time of year’ with them…

so let me be serious for a second
my wife and I have been falling on some tough times recently. We just haven’t been seeing eye to eye. Work is pulling us every which way. It just hasn’t been good. She says that we’ve got nothing in common. No common ground to start from and we’re falling apart. She says the world has come between us, our lives have come between us. But i know she just doesn’t care.
So I really thought it was over. But then I knew how to win here back. I said what about Breakfast at Tiffany’s? She said, “I think I remember the film, yes” (which to me meant she has a vague recollection of this film) and I said “as I recalled we both kind of liked it” (it should be noted I wasn’t positive we both kind of liked it, I was sure neither of us thought it was great) and I said, “well that’s one thing we’ve got.”
And everything is hunky dory. When it came down to it, we had one thing in common, we both are confident that we mildly enjoyed the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s and we decided to keep the relationship together.

That was serious?
It sounded like a song. With 2396 comments thrown in.

they have to be the weakest lyrics of all time
I said what about Breakfast at Tiffanys
She said I think I remember the film, yes.
So you’re girlfriend is breaking up with you, you’re desperate you yell out the name of a movie. She says that she thinks she remembers it. Great, you got her talking, but now what?
“As I recall we both kind of liked it, and that’s one thing we’ve got.”
End of conversation. Right there. Please don’t leave me, I love you. You’re the only one. None of these things pop in your head. The only thing that pops in your head is “didn’t we both kind of like that one movie?” And it’s not even a movie he loved. I get if the dude was a LotR fan and found a girl that would watch all 3 extended versions on a Wednesday night with him, but it doens’t sound like HE likes the movie.
Unbelievable. This song should be ridiculed eternally. Yet every time I hear, I turn it up and sing it at the top of my lungs laughing hysterically. I’ve seen a soccer mom run a red light because she pulled up next to me when this song was on.
This signature is not clever. It is not funny. Why are you still reading it? Seriously, it only goes down from here. It doesn't get better. You're the type of person who sits through the entire movie even though the movie is obviously horrible. And not in that "so bad it's good horrible" I'm talking Transformers 2 horrible. You liked that movie? Ugh.
The lyrics certainly aren't rocket surgery
Nor do they make me view life differently. In fact, you have posited a very strong argument to hate that song even more than I did before. Yes, I said it…I hate Deep Blue Something.
Since you seem to be a large fan of the genre…which under-appreciated 90s band would make you excited to travel hundreds of miles to see a reunion concert (or a revival show, or whatever)?
Me? The Refreshments.

You seem disturbed more than normal today
which is entertaining.
Maybe you should tattoo love and hate onto the knuckles of each hand to decide how you feel about something.
some day I am going to appear at a tailgate
I have season tickets, and you will all be so dissapointed. Except for Threadkiller, who will finally have his judgment day for puppy kicking/kid ice cream cone ruining.

I realize this is a joke answer
but it is probably true. I like going to really bad movies. I went and got MegaShark v. Giant Octopus the day it was released on dvd. I like awful bands. It just cracks me up.
I certainly like good music and would go see the refreshments. But to tell people that I traveled hundreds of miles to see a Deep Blue Something reunion concert? Oh the looks on their faces would be worth it.
I might even say that the lead singer is dead and they use his brother so I technically saw Deep Blue Nothing.

I like it.
I saw Gin Blossoms a few years ago…the number of 40-something weirdos, and the 40-something weirdos on stage, made it supremely entertaining. Lots of jean jackets. But it was in Biloxi, MS…that didn’t help.

Another role player
WHICH is fine. A team needs role players. So far, though, fHaith has done nothing but commit role players out of high school, with the notable exception of Ish Wainwright, who later rescinded his committment.
by Bivouac77 on Sep 1, 2011 6:14 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Now what makes you think Jorgenson or Smith are role players?
Read their profiles, see who is after them…if they progress as expected, they are future starters. Smith is on the edge of the top 150 prospects in his class (a la Kimmie and Marcus), and Jorgenson is the 101st best prospect in his class per Rivals.
ranking services
are mostly pointless. Some people treat them like a religion, though, I guess.
Forgot about Smith, though. My bad.
by Bivouac77 on Sep 1, 2011 6:19 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I do agree with that
But they do show that people respect a player’s game, their potential, or both. So on the flip side…how can you say Jorgenson is a role player without knowing anything about him? If you go to RB games, what is he lacking? This is what I read earlier…

Oops.
Think I’m gonna have to eat crow on this one, Bonerfield. I didn’t have a realistic conception about what the scouts are saying across the board. Had heard about him a while back, but didn’t realize the the name he’d been making for himself lately.

I had never heard of him before hearing of his commitment
But I have really liked what I’ve read. Before Pressey, the last highly rated HS point guards we picked up were Jason Horton and Wesley Stokes…yeah. It would be great to see the reins passed from Pressey (Sr in 2013-14) to Jorgenson (Freshman that year).

Yes. I don't even care that Wisky-UNLV will be 947-0 or that Memphis is getting stomped at home
by a marginally-ranked SEC team. Its college football, damnit.
