Well believe it or not, there were plenty of positives in that shootout the other day. Not to say that there weren't negatives because we all know there were, but all in all, we found out a lot about or team last night.
First of all, we found out we have a special guy at QB. He showed us what probably should have happened against Miami last week. But with that week aside, he showed that he can come up in the clutch. Which is very important to us. We all knew he could run the ball coming into this game, but he really showed that he could throw the ball and move down the field. I will admit it, he did struggle on most of his deep throws and missed T.J. Moe a couple of times, but he did deliver a couple of very good passes into the endzone towards the end of the game. I would guess that Coach Pinkel will be telling him to make his reads.I think we are fortunate to have him for two more years after this.
Secondly, we saw how Henry Josey can also take some of the load. He converted some very key third downs and got us out of trouble many more times. Josey just impressed me all around, he was able to catch a pass, make a move, and get up field. And when he got the handoff he was usually able to get a few yards. The most memorable run of the night for him was that 39 yard run in the fourth quarter to get us going again. He had 9 carries for 94 yards and 0 TD's last night. That is a 10.4 yard per carry average. I would say that's a good thing. He also had 2 receptions for 51 yards. Not bad for a Sophmore who was up against a pretty good defense. It's gonna be nice having Franklin and Josey lining up together when they're seniors.
Third, it looks like our O-line has depth. Our starting LT out and a guard playing center. I realize that they werent amazing, they did give up 2 sacks, but for the injuries we had, I think we did a good job.
Fourth, our defense, despite some pretty big set backs, did fairly well. I can remember a couple of times when we got pressure on that giant of a QB, he ran it and there was nobody to stop him for short yardage. Our secondary unfortunately, wasn't amazing. They had they're good moments and they had they're bad moments. We did give up way too many big plays. That will be something they should work on in practice.
Next, our wide receivers came to play. Marcus Lucas really impressed me with some big time catches. I think that if he continues to play like this, he and Franklin will develop some chemistry. T.J. Moe also had some nice plays. He was open a ton of times and Franklin just didn't find him. If he had, the end of this game could have turned out very differently. Wes Kemp really surprised me. He made some nice catches also.
Lastly, our team has the will to fight back. Win or loss, we were down 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Franklin and Josey led the offense, and the defense all together did a good job. You could tell we really wanted it. I can see a bright future for this team.
