MIZZOUEXPANSIONAPALOOZA™ 2011
As I've said many times, as long as we take him for what he is, Chip Brown is an incredibly valuable resource for realignment rumors. In this case, with A&M pretty much officially out the door, instead of taking at 100% face value his "OU all but gone" article below, we should take it as "Texas wants us to know OU is all but gone." So what's the purpose then? Is it simply Texas trying to blame others for the Big 12's downfall (like Berry Tramel always finds a way to blame Missouri)? Is it to put extra pressure on Oklahoma?
Until Oklahoma actually leaves, part of me will believe that this is all posturing, and for good reason: it usually is. Still, it appears Oklahoma is a lot closer to being gone than I expected them to be. And as we've been saying for a while, if they're gone, the Big 12 is too. The conference can absorb A&M's loss, it can absorb Mizzou's or Kansas' or Texas Tech's, too. But Oklahoma?

Per league rules, when a game is not selected for one of those windows, the only option a school has to get the game on TV is to show it on a pay-per-view basis.
Saturday's game (with kickoff at 6:00 p.m.) will be produced in High Definition by FOX Sports and offered on various cable providers and satellite systems around the country. Fans are encouraged to check with www.mutigers.com for continuous updates on providers of the telecast, which is available for $39.95.

PowerMizzou: Media Day NotebookI'll touch on this more in Tuesday's Tribune, but long snapper Beau Brinkley and kicker Grant Ressel both said the coaches discussed with them during halftime a strategy to call timeouts on field goals. Long story short, Burfict was timing holder Brandon Gerau's cadence from the game's first field goal attempt. Early on, coaches Bruce Walker and Andy Hill talked to the field goal/PAT team about the possibility of running through the play clock and using timeouts to goad Burfict into jumping offside. "Grant knew what we were doing," Brinkley said. "We weren't trying to ice him like some people are saying. We had it all planned. We talked about it at halftime because if it happened, we wanted to get him to jump offsides. When we went out there, I was told not to snap the ball at any costs."
Ressel's story matched up. In fact, he said he was so dialed into making the field goal at the end of regulation, he assumed Arizona State had called the first timeout and Missouri called the second. (The official stat sheet credits Missouri with calling both, though Ressel was fairly certain ASU called the first.) "Oh, well, it doesn't matter," he said.

One of many reasons I switched over to 810 in the am...
I like how 810 has a equal cast between MU and KU alumns and can have respectful conversations about each others program.
Fescoe just bashes MU/KSU over and over and over but never points a finger at KU when they do something stupid

Here's the thing about that
Mizzou “started it” because they had the guts to talk publicly about the inequities in the Conference. Alden had the guts to say that there were problems in the Big 12.
Because of that, the media picked Mizzou as the “obvious” choice for Big 10 expansion, because we were clearly not happy where we were. So, if Mizzou needs to apologize for speaking the truth, then I guess we should be proud of that.
Rational Mizzou Talk, whether you like us or not.
Remember
Nebraska threatened to leave the conference in 2007 if equal revenue sharing was implemented. Commissioner Kevin Weiberg left the conference for a lesser position in the Big Ten because of this attitude from the four elites. When Pinkel brought up equal revenue sharing in 2009, Dan Beebe said definitively that the issue was dead. When Nebraska jumped to the Big Ten in 2010, they cited equal revenue sharing as one of the benefits of being in the Big Ten.
But it’s all our fault.

Never change BON
A little over a year ago, when I started participating discussing realignment theories and conspiracies with other realignment geeks on Frank The Tank’s blog, one argument I would see fairly regularly was that Texas sought conference domination more than anything else.
Texas, these posters would argue, didn’t care about seeking out a conference of fellow athletic or academic heavyweights. Instead, Texas sought to create and control what would be in essence a Texas & The Seven Dwarfs Conference, one which Texas could dominate not only on the field with regularity but in the conference boardroom as well. An ugly conference to pretty much any fan and supporter of the University but one which would guarantee that Texas, Inc. could continue to fill its coffers.
I usually dismissed these posters without so much as a counter-argument, since they always seems vehemently anti-Texas in their outlooks to begin with, and this theory simply fit in with their worldview of Texas being the center of All Things Evil in the world of college athletics.
But were they right after all? I’m beginning to wonder. Or, in the alternate, is a Seven Dwarf Conference what Texas will be stuck with if it continues to overplay its hand?
I truly believe that Texas has been this way for so long that
they honestly don’t realize their arrogance.
"Every absurdity has a champion to defend it" Olivar Goldsmith
I went to UT
because I grew up in Austin as a poor boy and, as an Austin boy, had orange blood in my veins. This was during the DKR years when Texas was always a natty powerhouse. As such, UT was always the team everyone wanted to beat as that is human nature. Had Missouri done the same then THEY would have been the team everyone wanted to beat. The, also, would have been accused of arrogance and denigrated if they made fiscal moves that were best for their school.
UT has NOT gone behind anyones back, hidden anything or, what is more important, NOT inviited other conference members to join a network plan. This is
WELL documented and is the way it is
It becomes tiresome to constantly hear the bashing of UT when the schools of those that bash would have done the very same thing that UT did – it is disingenous and hypocritcal!

It doesn't matter what you think other schools would have done
Only what Texas, A&M, Nebraska and Oklahoma did. The model for how to run a stable conference is very clear at this point, and the Big XII “Screw You, We’re Texas” model doesn’t work. You have destabilized the conference to the point where even your biggest rivals don’t want to be around you. You can’t get away from that.
by Gaknar on Sep 13, 2011 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions 6 recs
I would also point out that
When Missouri was talking about equal revenue sharing in 2009, their spot in the appearance pool was such that they would not have benefited from equal revenue sharing. Mizzou was willing to accept a policy that didn’t benefit them but that would have helped the conference as a whole. Let me know when Texas does something like that.

It's funny how this is always the response when I start annoying you guys
Why do you never bother to answer the obvious question? If the Big XII model is so great, why are we being torn apart by three power conferences that have abandoned the Texas model? Why did Florida and Alabama and Ohio State and USC choose models that required them to make short term sacrifices for the good of the conference while Texas chose to go it alone? I’m not the issue. I’m just a guy on the internet. But I’m also the guy who pointed out a year ago that the Big XII was doubling down on bad policy and that that behavior was going to continue to destabilize the conference. It should have been no surprise to anyone that A&M was going to bolt or that Oklahoma would continue to eye the Pac-12. All of the signs were there, but everyone ignored them in the post-expansion lovey dovey spin. Well, here we are.
Hey, OU and OSU left the SWC in the early 1900's for a reason.
OU left the SWC in 1919 for the MVIAA.
Oklahoma A&M (now OSU) left the SWC in 1925 for the MVIAA.
Now, 90 or so years later, it’s going to happen again.
I wonder if those in charge of OU/OSU in the 1920’s felt the same way about Texas as those in charge now do.
Texas – the Death Star of college athletics. You’ve killed 2 conferences. No wonder you want to let Texas Tech tag along with you – that’s where all the SWC memorabilia is, so you can go look at the wreckage.

This is the response because you are quick to criticize

I can accept opinions, this IS a blog, but I take issue with absolutions stated by someone who is “just a guy on the internet”.
I’m sure you are a great guy and reasonable as well – but the truth is, we know nothing of the inner workings of these school presidents and AD. We only know what we read by other “journalists” whom ALSO know diddly.

What falsities these are.
You realize that members of the former Big 12 left to join conferences that don’t do what UT has been allowed to do in this conference, right? And every B12 team with marketability is trying to ditch this sinking ship to find conferences that don’t allow what UT has been allowed to do, right?
This argument by UT fans is easily the most frustrating one, and yet the easiest to debunk.

This Hopkins Horn guy might be the most rational guy
over there. It is nice to see one UT honk openly question the way UT has gone about this expansion game.
What would be nice for these folks to realize is that UT has been the impetus for all massive realignment talk since the Huskers left for the B1G, and possibly even before then. The LHN caused this entire scenario to avalanche.
Furthermore, the University of Texas (“Geppetto”) is using the press, specifically Chip (“Pinocchio”) Brown, as their means to an end of blaming everyone other than themselves for massive changes to the college sports landscape. Funny how all of Chip’s articles once set A&M in his sights, now have moved on to OU and OSU. The Oklahoma schools couldn’t possibly be this selfish, right?
That Burnt Orange kool-aid must be addictive, because UT fans don’t see this situation the way that the rational world does.

What I have to laugh at
Is how so many of them treat everything as proof of Deloss Dodd’s tactical genius. Even when nothing’s happening, they see silence as proof that Texas is getting what they want. The truth is, UT is not perfect. No matter how powerful you think you are, when you start thinking you’re invincible, that’s when reality hits you in the face. We have the saying “pride goeth before the fall” for a reason. Texas overplayed its hand and now it looks like they’re going to kill their second conference in 20 years.
Good luck ACC. I give you until 2020.
by Gaknar on Sep 13, 2011 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
It's been clear to us Tiger fans all along
that the LHN as currently constructed is the quickest path to independent status that any AD could chart. Either UT cedes ultimate control over the LHN to a conference or they do not get what they claim to want. It’s that simple.
funny question
Texas does go Indy…who plays them?
And seriously, what do they do about the BCS? I don’t know if BYU got anything close to the deal that ND did, if a deal at all. Really, I believe that Texas HAS to stay in a conference to ever have aspirations towards a title shot. I also think they are going to have to start paying large schools to come to Austin to play them. Imagine Mizzou getting 3 mil to go to Austin one year.
What do you mean I can't retire at 32?
I am sure they could browbeat 11 of the following schools into their conference.
UT – SA, TSU – San Marcos, Baylor, TT, SMU, Houston, Rice, UTEP, New Mexico, NMSU, Tulsa, UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Tulane.
The schools in italics are slated to join the WAC, I believe, in the 2012-2013 season.

I have an off topic question about the extra seating for the homecoming game.
I have family visiting for Homecoming and have 6 tickets for the field level seats at the north endzone bleachers. Are those seats first come first serve or assigned seating? I want to be able to have my guests all be able to sit together and don’t know if we need to arrive as early as possible to get all 6 together or if the seats are individually assigned and we can arrive whenever and still be able to sit together. Thanks in advance.
Usually if your tickets have a seat number on them they're reserved, if not, then open seating.

If you want all six together, I would suggest at least one of you show up 90 minutes prior to game time to be one of the first ones through the gate … to save the seats for the others.
