Mizzou Links, 9-19-11
Because we suddenly have a ridiculous number of links through which to sift, I'm once again bumping MIZZOUEXPANSIONAPALOOZA™ 2011 links into their own post. Expect that later in the morning (after D-Sing's BlogPoll post). In the meantime, consider this your non-realignment oasis.

- The Trib: After long offseason, Tigers eager to start
In another drill, the guards chased each other through cones that stretched around the 3-point arc as though they were following their man around a high screen.
They maintained a jovial atmosphere throughout the sessions, even as their breathing got heavier.
"We put in a lot of work, but we get to have a lot more fun with conditioning because you can actually see what you’re getting better at instead of it just seeming like we’re just running," senior guard Marcus Denmon said. "We actually see what we’re working on and implementing it into basketball stuff, so I really like it."
Haith and his assistants have used the time to teach techniques and terminology that will be important for playing in their new system, which will be more structured than Anderson’s "Fastest 40 Minutes."
"Coach Haith is really into details," Laurence Bowers said. "They stop you for everything, try to correct everything."

I'm glad that the Tigers won the way they did
sort of takes the sting out of being a Chiefs fan

Not really sure what to make of the "Pilgrims" piece...
Interestingly written opening (Still debating the definition of the Rock M as “monolithic”… ) and from there it seems pall-casting. I understand Mizzou Football has never climbed to the heights of the most prestigious programs… but I also don’t want to feel sad and upset WHILE reading about Chase beating ku in ’07. I guess its a perspective issue, but from Columbia, Mo… it seems awfully negative. Even the footnote is brutal.
And not ONE Hollywood exec would care AT ALL about Devine having been at “Missouri”, in Rudy. There’s a reason we’re s “flyover” state, as far as they’re concerned. Green Bay Packers = Lombardi = Champions = Cultural reference that would conjure images in movie-goers minds. Missouri from the 60’s would just make people think Devine was involved in moonshine’ing…
Bet me!
not to mention
He was actually coaching the Packers at the time. Which sounds better: “of the packers!” or “that guy who coached Mizzou 5 years ago!”. You replace Mizzou with any team in that scenario and it sounds stupid.

Grantland(.com) like
I thought that article would fit in well at Grantland.com. That is not a compliment. I thought it simply tried too hard. Though I used to read most of Bill Simmons’ columns, I stopped some time ago. I have tried several times to read stuff at the new site. Though I like and respect some of the writers they have assembled, most of the articles come across as trying to show how smart the writer thinks they are.
That is the same vibe I got from the Pilgrim’s piece.
Concur. On all points.
Have enjoyed some of Klosterman’s soccer pieces there, but nothing of note has come from the rest of the site, AFAIC.
Bet me!

Grantland is SO self-important
The smarmy-ness just oozes from most of their pieces. And this article would fit that bill.
Yeah, and what the hell did he mean when he said Mizzou looked "like Duke" when they played ASU?

we also didn't come from behind to beat kU in 07. We never trailed in that game.

certainly didn’t see this coming, but it puts a little joy in my cold black heart. I’m really glad that you responded to my post in particular, which I will take as a sign that I, and I alone, busted you on this. In fact, I’m chaning my sig line.

That's what I should've done...
Instead I read the whole piece and now I want to punch the author in the face.
He basically said, “Those stupid Mizzou fans keep going to games even though they suck and will continue to suck. Stupid Missourians, they just don’t know any better.”
So I'm confused as to which meme I'm supposed to use?
Are Mizzou fans fickle fans who won’t show up to games or are Mizzou fans pathetic losers who drive two hours to watch a team that always has and always will suck?
I think he was really just using a metaphor regarding half-time adjustments, full backs and the futility of Yost.

Very interesting article...
But gonna have to disagree about the future of MU football. Fall behind in talent and funding? First off, we have $160 million in the wings from private donors, waiting to see where we land in conference realignment. Talent? Our recruiting classes have steadily improved every year for the past 7 years or so, and there’s no reason to think that will change, unless we (and we won’t) end up in C-USA or MWC. Very descriptive writing, and somewhat accurate on portions of our history, but mostly seems like the writer was trying too hard to set a tone for the article.

Regarding the basketball article...
to me, that’s a stinging indictment of the Fastest 40. How can a coach fail to explain the purpose and relevance of drills to his players? It also may explain why many games spiraled from bad to disastrous…when the going got tough, the team could not figure out how to fix it because the coaches did not explain how to fix it.
It is exciting to sense the players’ renewed spirit that stems from the coaching change.
