SEC vs. B12 Travel Distances/Times, Appended

One issue related to switching conferences is the difference in travel distance/time that our student athletes/coaches and fans will experience. I did a quick computation of approximate travel distances and times using GoogleMaps. I think GoogleMaps uses the speed limit for computing travel times, so no congestion effects are included. Looking at the table, the travel times go up, on the average, by 2.5 hours (by 29%) and the distance by ~150 miles.

I've updated the numbers and added a few more tables:Potential SEC West (form Courier -Journal), and a hypo shortest path teams. I know that more than SEC West teams will be scheduled and the shortest paths teams are completely unrealistic. But it's just something to think about.

Here is a link to an article David Knox On TV: A&M stands for Angry and Miserable 10-hour trips. I am guessing that 10-hour trips is actually short.

Questions:

How much of a factor does the increase in travel figure in Mizzou's decision?

How significant are travel costs for an athletic department considering all the bodies that need to be moved?

How will this impact our student athletes academically?

How much do all these types of externalities (e.g. travel, culture, academics, Big8 history) weigh in the conference alignment decision?

I really have no idea. My uneducated guess is that major college sports has transitioned into more of a commercial model where these externalities bow down to the mighty dollar. On a tangential issue, will anyone ever use Title VII to stem the tide of football dominance in D1 college sports? I am not advocating for it but just thinking about what future holds for Mizzou.

Looking at the SEC West only, it does not appear that travel will be that bad considering that B12 could add teams like BYU.
