Happy New Year, Rock M Family

It probably goes without saying that this place is kind of like a family at this point. We alternate between getting along beautifully and annoying the hell out of each other, but we are united by a bond, and we (mostly) like each other at the end of the day. Each progressive year is Rock M Nation's best yet, and 2011 was no exception. There was plenty to discuss in the world of Mizzou athletics in 2011 (to put it mildly), and with an undefeated basketball team, a move to the SEC, etc., 2012 will likely be no different. I hope you continue to visit Rock M daily, and I hope you tell your friends about us. (The smart, witty ones anyway, ahem.)

Consider this your Happy New Year / New Year's Resolution thread. What are you hoping to accomplish in 2012? I've got two primary resolutions:

1. Continue getting better at cooking. Part of it comes with the "stay at home dad" territory, and part of it comes because, quite simply, cooking is pretty fun. (I made pasta carbonara last night, all by myself! Who knew pasta with no butter or cream could be that unhealthy??) It seems we buy cookbooks at the same rate that we change diapers (slight exaggeration), and I'm beginning to try to actually use them. (I share this with Rock M'ers because, well, there are, to say the least, quite a few food nerds here.)

2. Get back to working out regularly. I'm not worried about any sort of "get in shape" or "lose __ pounds" goal; I just used to work out 3-4 times per week, but that fell to 0-1 with the summer writing schedule and is still only at 1-2 with baby/writing. Time to improve on that.

Now it's your turn. Thanks for helping to make this such a fun, tightly-knit community, everybody.

My resolutions?

1) Graduate in May
2) Move to the East Coast for grad school
3) Read 42(!) books
4) Run a 5K. I hate running.

I also hate running

but I usually run on the treadmill with a game on (either Mizzou or Cardinals). The distraction helps a lot. Before, I know it, I’ve done 3 miles already, and overtime games could lead to a good 5 mile run.

On my way back home from the Caribbean cruise.

I have the most authentic Jamaican Jerk Chicken recipe ever, I watched the guy make it in a lean-to kitchen with beach sand for the floor, so if you are interested let me know!

Resolutions?
1)Ankle is finally stable, now I have to get back in to the best shape of my life…
2) 4.0 next semester
3) Go on as many road trips next year for football games, as many as a student budget will allow
4) Always take the extra effort, in anything I do.

Hope everybody’s holiday season was peaceful and filled with love! Thanks for putting up with me this past half a year!

What are you going

to make me troll you for it?

by hed64 on Jan 1, 2012 10:55 AM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Ha!

Ok here it is. I’m sorry for the lack of proportions, amounts, ect. but my 6 years of German didn’t prepare me for language barrier there, even though they do speak English. But here it is

Salad
- it was more of a slaw than a legit salad, but the dressing was light in both flavor and amount, so go easy on the sugar and vinegar, your supposed to taste the vegetables.
Green pepper
Carrots
Cabbage
Lettuce
Vinegar
Sugar

Cabbage and lettuce was chopped small, carrots were shredded, and the green pepper was very thin and in bite sized strips.

Beans and rice
-These were amazing. The seasoning was not like a cajun red beans and rice, though if you did make it like that I’m sure it would be absolutely delicious. Again, nothing overpowering, he used some of the jerk seasonings along with the coconut powder. Again, sorry for no amounts, but it was about 40 beans/60 rice. Beans were dried. For the onions, he just let them cook with the beans, they were already in the pot when I watched him put the rice in, so maybe they were in there as soon as the beans? Experiment, cause really nothing can go wrong.

Cook red beans first half hour
Add spices, coconut powder, onions?
Add rice last

Chicken
I bought a jar of the jerk seasoning he used, so I cant really give a recipe for it, but one store bought or homemade would work. The key is to marinate it overnight and cook it low and slow. He used chicken with the skin on, and rubbed the seasoning on top and under the skin, and once it was done cooking, it was about the best damn thing I had on the entire cruise
Season chicken overnight, grill

Wash it down with a red stripe, or something else that fits, and you’ll be happy, I guarantee it! It’s not exact, but it’s something you can play around with.

Happy New Year!

Thanks to Bill and all the contributors for making this a great place.

1) Get my main project to publishable territory before the end of this year

2) Get better at doing “chores” for the Mrs. (ie grown up phone calls)

3) Continue running better until we can both have “fun” doing 5 Ks/10 Ks again

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Jan 1, 2012 11:12 AM CST reply actions

2012 is here!

I have to echo Bill on the smart and witty friends. You know where you can redirect the others…

1) Run 5 times a week. I thought about a distance goal, or a race goal, or a time goal, and I decided that this is what I need the most. Just the commitment to get out of bed early (the only time that works for me, even though I am not a morning person) and log some miles. If I do that, the rest will come.

2) Less time online, and more time with books. I love to read, but my online/offline ratio has gotten out of whack. Probably not what Bill wants to hear, but I doubt that my RockM time will suffer much. Ironically, what has pushed this to the top of my list is a speech to the cadets at West Point that I found via my Google Reader and read online.

Thanks for making RockMNation what it is!

1. Recover from back surgery Dec 19th. Amazing what they can do with the newer minimally invasive techniques these days.
2. Return to fighting weight – 175
3. Ride another century this year
4. Qualify for the State Am again and show better with a recovered back!

by TommyV on Jan 1, 2012 11:37 AM CST reply actions

Goals

1. By Sunday at bed time, have a workout schedule for the following week. This includes the training for a half marathon on April 14.

2. Be more present to my children and enjoy them while they still think talking/hanging out with me is socially acceptable.

3. Get my husband to join the RMN community. He is the genesis of my Tiger fandom & I think he would appreciate the community.

Cheers!

For any KCers here that have 5k's on their list...

I’ve run in probably ~10 in the last 2 years in KC, so any of you that want to run them together just let me know.

I’ve already signed up for the All-Star 5k at Kauffman Stadium on All-Star Weekend, INFO HERE I’ve done the Royals 5k runs the last 2 years, they’re are superb events and you get to end the run right next to home plate in the stadium. It’s really awesome.

The Rivalry Run last year was a ton of fun, as it’s Missouri vs kansas. This will be the 3rd year of it, and Missouri has DOMINATED the first 2. Right now they’re aiming for August 18, 2012. INFO HERE

If anyone would be interested in joining the Komen Race for the Cure 5k but you don’t have anyone specific to run for, you can join the team I run for supporting a close family friend who is now a 5-year survivor of breast cancer. Being out there for that event is one of the most humbling and inspiring events you could ever witness. August 12, 2012 INFO HERE

The Smithville Dam Run is great because it’s really easy. The last 1/4 mile is all downhill. The Smithville run in 2010 is still my PR (around 28:30) and the only time I’ve medaled for my age group. INFO HERE

And the last one I recommend is the John Glaser Memorial 5K. John Glaser was a Shawnee fire fighter who lost his life in action about 2 years go. This 5k raises money for the fund that supports the families of fire fighters and police officers who’ve been lost in the line of duty. It’s tough to run with a lump in your throat, but this will make you do it. INFO HERE

Thanks for a great year!!

You guys kept me positive (for the most part) when some rocky times in MU athletics popped up this season.

Resolutions:
1) Join the 73,000 club – That’s 200 push ups a day for 365 days. I plan to at least average 200 per day to get to that goal, since sometimes stuff gets in the way.

2) Increase my dontation to the TSF. I promised if we made the switch to the SEC, I would support the University better financially. Its time to put my money where my mouth is.

3) Obtain my CCW permit, and see to it that my wife does as well.

Best wishes to you all in obtaining your goals for 2012!!

200 a day...

Do you worry about injury? I’m 35, and have been slowly building up to where I can do 35-40 at a time, but if I overdo it, I’m sore for days. So I haven’t pushed it too hard.

Did you come up with this idea from people who’ve reported good results, or is it kind of a wild hair?

by ngh9bc on Jan 1, 2012 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

It's all about the pace.

You can break it up as much as you need to. I’m 31 and work out 3+ times a week. Lately there have been more distractions keeping me from the gym. But push ups can be done anywhere and any time. I’ve been doing push ups to supplement my gym workouts, but now I’m putting a number to it.

by MUStL on Jan 1, 2012 10:15 PM CST via Android app up reply actions

The best resolution I've ever accomplished...

…was the Tommy Saunders “100,000 pushups in a year” goal. In 2007, I think. I started slowly, then bumped it up by the end of the year (I think it was like 400-500 a day at the end). I have slacked in that regard in recent years, in part because I don’t think I stretch very well, and shoulder stiffness doesn’t mix well with “I have terrible posture when writing” issues. But I’m setting some sort of goal like that for 2012 … just haven’t figured out what yet. I do much better when there’s a number involved.

For this year

1. Get some kind of job agan. It’s funny how when you stop working, you realize how much you actually miss it. I miss going into an office and actually accomplishing something. Hopefully I can accomplish this within the next couple of weeks.

2.Finish writing a novel. I have about four that I’ve started and let go. I need to go back to one of them and commit to finishing it.

3. Start working out regularly. I’m not even going to focus on the weight loss aspect, but I need to become active again. I have a nearly five year old I need to be able to catch without being winded within 30 seconds.

4. Become a better contributor to Rock M Nation. I am grateful that Bill and RPT thought enough of me to give me a chance to be an author here, and it was fun this year. Now I need to become a stronger more creative writer to keep up.

it seems like i get a lot of leeway around here for my sometimes idiotic rants.

for that i am thankful, and will try to minimize some this year. more importantly, i need to concentrate more on the positive aspects of my wife and son. we would all be happier if i would start actively trying to make them feel better about themselves as human beings and family members. i think if i can accomplish that, other “resolutions” will fall into place naturally. thank you to everyone here on rmn for always being interesting and accommodating. happy new year, RMN!

Mrsjst and I are planning on a triathlon this year. We did a half century bike ride in the fall and really enjoyed it. Current plan is a sprint tri in march or april and the real thing a couple months later. That’s going to accomplish a lot of other goals (cook more at home, drink less) for us too. Also, she’ll never see this, but I’m ridiculously proud of mrsjst, who is finishing up her supervision to become a licensed professional counselor and a registered play therapist. So this fall it’s possible she’ll be out of the public schools, which would be really good for her. Other than that … SEC away game sounds like fun. Happy new year, everyone!

Thank you..

After graduating in May 2011, my interest in this site has only grown. I don’t comment on a ton of stuff and I’m usually at work (like I am now) when I do, but I visit the site probably 2-3 times a day to see RockM’s opinion, as well as everyone who comments opinions. Honestly, RockM has become a vital part of everyday routine and I want to thank you for having what I would consider one of the premier college blog sites. I cannot thank you enough for keeping us in tune and up to date with all mizzou athletics. When you say it has become somewhat of a family, I believe that. I feel I may be that relative that’s somewhat quiet in the corner at family gatherings but will try to add his two cents in when it seems appropriate.

We are lucky to have RockM and here’s to a 2012 that only looks up for the tigers..

Happy New Year to all the RMN community

And thanks to everyone for a great 2011!

I have a handful of things I’d like to get done this year, but I wouldn’t call them resolutions, per se. I’m planning on starting my PhD in the fall, I have a lot I’d like to get done on my house (time allowing) and running a barefoot 5k would be pretty cool, but we’ll see how that goes. Mostly I just want to try to be a better husband, son, friend, etc. Not that I think I’m a bad one now, but there’s always room for improvement.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Jan 1, 2012 9:41 PM CST reply actions

I'm nerding out on this thing

and doing a strategic plan rather than just resolutions. Basically I’m going to try to quantify things and set deadlines and such in hopes of actually accomplishing them rather than blowing them off like usual. Here are some of my general ideas:

1. Work on my songwriting. I just got my first album made, and I’m really happy with how it came out, but I want to be more deliberate about improving my craft as a songwriter.

2. Lose more weight. I lost 50 pounds two years ago, and plateaued when I started law school, and I’ve probably gained 15-20 pounds of it back this semester because I got out of the habit of working out. I want to get back on track working out regularly, being aware of what I’m eating, and lose some more weight. The ultimate goal: a two-syllable damn. If I weigh what I think I do, I think another 40 or so pounds will probably put me in full-on MMA fighting shape (except that I don’t know how to MMA fight). I may reinstitute an old life rule of no more than 2 beers on weeknights to aid this goal as well.

3. Be more proactive in my personal life. I used to do well keeping in touch with my good friends who all dispersed after college, but it fell off a lot when I hit the Second Semester 1L Depression last spring. I want to get it back together. I also want to date some. It’s been a while since I dated anyone, and I’ve used the fact that I don’t have much opportunity, since law school is basically all I do. No more excuses.

I’m not setting any goals regarding Mizzou sports, but I hope that both it and this community will continue to be inspiration and motivation to do things the right way.

We all understand what being a Mizzou fan is like. That’s no excuse for being a douche.
