Mizzou Links, 1-10-12
First things first: Mizzou's 2012 Hall of Fame class was announced yesterday.
Ben Askren (Wrestling 2004-07). A no-brainer if there ever were one.
Don Chadwick (Football 1956-58). An All-American in 1958, Chadwick managed to be coached by three Hall of Famers in three years: Don Faurot, then Frank Broyles, then Dan Devine.
Tom Heckman (Baseball 1978-81). Led Mizzou to a conference title in 1980.
Max Scherzer (Baseball 2004-06). Went from low-control reliever to dominant ace in a heartbeat. Incredibly dominant in 2005-06.
Russ Sloan (Football 1958-59). A two-way threat for Mizzou's 1960 Orange Bowl squad.
George Williams (Virtually Every Sport 1920-21). One of basketball's first dominant big men ... how in the hell was he not in already???
Congrats to all. More from The Trib and SimmonsField.com.
Mizzou Football Links
So it appears that Donald Hopkins did officially decommit yesterday after about two or three months of rumors suggesting he would. There is still one other "soft commit" on the board -- Waco's Will Hines; we'll see how things go with him. Meanwhile, things are looking pretty good with four-star OL Jake Meador, and Mizzou evidently continues to have at least a fighting chance for DGB. With football officially over, we move straight into Football Recruiting Season. Should be fun.

Brent Mussberger said "Honey Badger"
At least 14 times last night.
I tend to enjoy his enthusiasm and passion, but it was the death of that meme.

My ears are still ringing from that.
The worst part was that Mathieu wasn’t even doing anything big to contribute.

I kept hoping he would get a strip or an INT
just so I could hear them yell “Honey Badger takes what it wants!”

This statement does not belong in a football broadcast.

The video was definitely funny.
The fact that people have completely overused it has kinda killed the comedy of it for me. #hipsterproblems

according to youtube about 2% of the voters didn't like it
so you’re not the only one. But you are in the minority.

I heard a lot of wrangling about the difficulties of a plus one model on the radio this AM
what’s so hard about it logistically? It seems simple…
1. Add the Cotton Bowl as a BCS bowl and keep the BCS at 10 teams.
2. On a rotating basis, use two of the BCS bowls as semifinals. The bowls that will be semifinals must be played before January 2nd, optimally on New Year’s Day. Each bowl will host a semifinal twice every five years.
3. Continue the BCS Championship game as a rotating entity, now split between five bowls instead of four, a week after the semifinals are played.
It literally took all of five minutes to think through that plan. Really tough.
but, but, but
BOWLS!

I'm not sure Jarret Lee would have done any better than Jefferson
but after he threw that weird-ass sidearm interception and then yelled at his receiver, I would have pulled him. It seemed to me at least that he’d pretty much completely lost his composure at that point.

Yeah, I'm not a fan
But I don’t like the set-up of the SB Nation homepage either. I don’t understand why they can’t keep it simple like the individual team pages, but whatever. I’m sure they did some sort of statistical study with chimps.

29th
Being just outside would make more sense to me. Mizzou looked good in the Indy, I don’t care what anybody says. Apparently that strength of schedule hype was crap too. It will probably take a few years to shake that Big 12 stink out of our perceived hydes before being in the SEC shakes some reality into the media. Kick’n butt next year will help too.

Totally agree.
Everyone’s eyes are glazed over from these 500 point games. That annoys me worse than a defensive struggle.
by CapnCribbs on Jan 10, 2012 11:09 AM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
I had just read this yesterday
And I kept thinking about it during the game. I think ESPN and sportswriters know that casual fans want to see passing and touchdowns, because it’s easy to follow without putting in the effort to really understand it, so they cater to that. It’s much harder to convince casual fans how interesting run blocking schemes, grinding out drives 3 yards at a time and playing smothering defence can be, so they create stories to make the sport as much like a drama as possible.
by Damnatio Memoriae on Jan 10, 2012 11:23 AM CST up reply actions
I didn't like it
because I didn’t think it was a defensive struggle. Bama was moving the ball with ease. Then they would stall out around the 25 yard line and kick a field goal. It was a blowout that wasn’t a blowout. At no point in the 2nd half did I ever think that LSU was going to do something to allow it to win the game. Bama smothered LSU and took all the drama out early. It wasn’t the score (or lack thereof) it was that the game wasn’t really in doubt.

I got to see two great defences
And one offence that is very good at what it does. The lack of drama doesn’t really bother me. I still can’t figure out why Miles didn’t at least give Lee a series though.

A bit OT...
but the recent rash of kids named “T-Bob” (as in T-Bob Hebert – the real cause of Bobby ripping into Miles, perhaps – not to mention a guy on Swamp People last year also named T-Bob) makes me wonder if the kids are named after the M*A*S*K robot of the same name.

KSU looks real good so far.
I’ll take the Cats, just think an already iffy Baylor offense will struggle against this energetic defense.
by CapnCribbs on Jan 10, 2012 7:27 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
they could conceivably go undefeated at home this season if they could beat the bears tonight.
especially with ku a bit down this year and of course, already beating us. come to think of it, if they win tonight, i’d be surprised if they didn’t go undefeated in the geometric shape.

But I agree, not sure if KSU needs this boost any more.

10 minutes ago i looked and ksu was up 7.
i come back and baylor is up 4. good game indeed. i thought maybe baylor would be mourning the loss of rg3.

poking the ball out of bounds on a certain ksu layup. baylor holds on for the win. bears are for real. doesn’t look good for us winning either matchup with them right now.

No, the rules state when you're down by two with under 15 seconds to go...
You HAVE to shoot a three, as long as the game is being played in the state of Kansas on a Tuesday night at least one night after a full moon. Bet you he feels stupid now. /rulebook’d

re: the subway domer piece
i am not on any of the social media outlets, so maybe i just don’t get the fascination, but everyone knows there will be losers trying to influence kids. nobody is forcing these recruits to be ont he facebooks, twtters, etc.maybe the thing to do would be for the kids to drop the social media during their recruitment. i mean, no, they shouldn’t have to, but if these friends or followers or whatever are such a problem, that sure seems like the easiest fix. something about that column just rubbed me slightly the wrong way.
