While I think Bomani takes it a couple of steps too far with the "human trafficking" part, and while I always get queasy when we start talking about student-athlete compensation (I really hate when we pretend a free education doesn't really count as compensation), he makes a very good point about a plus-one and any other development toward a playoff in college football: every single entity that has a bad influence on college sports, particularly college football, will have more influence with an expanded playoff format. That alone isn't reason not to pursue it, but it certainly refocuses the argument a bit. (And I loved the "need" versus "want" part.)

Loved this quote from Coach Haith. Keep it real.
They’ve bought into playing together as a team. We’ve got a lot of guys that can score. But we don’t have a lot of guys. It’s no secret. We’re not going to get any taller between now and the end of the year. We’re not going to add any dudes. This is what we got.
I made a similar comment last night
We can’t afford to have anyone disappear on any given night because if the conference play continues as it has, we are going to constantly be flirting with our two best big guys fouling out.
You either die a Tiger, or you live long enough to see yourself become a Jayhawk.

it's a gov job
but I just saw something that can put in the GS-12-14 level, so around 80-100K, depending on experience, education, and the like. Depending on where you’re at (Virginia or Maryland) and what you feel about commuting distance, you can live rather well on that. Housing is rough out here (prices are starting to go back up, and they didn’t drop that much), but there is a lot of demand for this type of work. If you have a lot of experience, you can do rather well for yourself.

not meant to be political.
Why shouldn’t I work for the N.S.A.? That’s a tough one, but I’ll take a shot. Say I’m working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I’m real happy with myself, ‘cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never met, never had no problem with, get killed. Now the politicians are sayin’, “Oh, send in the Marines to secure the area” ‘cause they don’t give a $&%. It won’t be their kid over there, gettin’ shot. Just like it wasn’t them when their number got called, ‘cause they were pullin’ a tour in the National Guard. It’ll be some kid from Southie takin’ shrapnel in the ass. And he comes back to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, ‘cause he’ll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile, he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And, of course, the oil companies used the skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them, but it ain’t helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. And they’re takin’ their sweet time bringin’ the oil back, of course, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and f&$(‘n play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain’t too long ‘til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now my buddy’s out of work and he can’t afford to drive, so he’s got to walk to the fuckin’ job interviews, which sucks ‘cause the shrapnel in his ass is givin’ him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he’s starvin’, ‘cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat, the only blue plate special they’re servin’ is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what did I think? I’m holdin’ out for somethin’ better. I figure f it, while I’m at it why not just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president.

We’ve built up all this angst that universities are profiting from the student athlete but we like to completely ignore the fact that the same can be said for the grad students slaving away in a lab for projects that millions of dollars in income for the school.
I’d have a lot more respect for this subject if the people calling for paying students weren’t simply using it as a way of ‘fixing’ the corruption issues that exist in college sports. As long as human nature remains the same (it will) that stipend is a joke that will do nothing to combat the issue of players selling gear and autographs for those things they want be they cash, cars or tattoos.

Terran Petteway from Texas Tech may be my new hero.
http://www.kansascity.com/2012/01/11/3365732/ku-leads-texas-tech-35-20-at-halftime.html
Later in the first half, Petteway hit Conner Teahan in the lip with either a fist or elbow. Teahan wasn’t sure.
"We were both getting a little physical under the basket," Teahan said. "I don’t think he punched me. I think he turned and pushed and came in a little higher than he expected."
I choose to believe he punched him … but mostly b/c I can’t imagine anybody not wanting to punch a beaker.
I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!
KU fan here
He’s my hero too. That flagrant 2 woke up the Jayhawks and turned a close game into a rout. If any MU players want to take a swing at Teahan in Columbia, they shouldn’t hold back.

That doesn't make any sense
I’m not actually sure what you’re saying, but as best I can make out, you’re saying I’m willing to use others’ definitions of words in discussion with them, even if I wouldn’t define the word that way. Yes, I am. The alternative is a fight over the definition. Some people choose to pick that fight. I try to resist that urge
Either way, regardless of the meaning of the word “hero,” the point here is that the man caused no harm but woke our team up and led to a win. That’s a positive for me. If some MU players want to swing and miss at some KU players and get themselves thrown out of the games later this season, that will also be a positive for me.
Again I would have to think that
“caused no harm” would be subjective, as asking Teahan would probably result in a different answer than yours.
But to each his own.

Teahan said so after the game
There’s no doubt there was contact (right before the punch/push/elbow the guy grabbed Teahan and tried to throw him), but Teahan said there was no harm done.
But you can also see from the video that there was barely any contact (Intent is what matters for a Flagrant 2 foul, not damage done). Is there really some dispute whether Teahan was injured?
here
Ingredients
1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
8 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced
Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

We really are an SEC team!

It's asinine
I really don’t understand how CoMo can completely lose its sh*t over an inch or so.

Springfield area had only about 1 inch. Still have school.
Como needs to get in the game here.
That's right Ice Man. I am dangerous
Pie Forever!
St. Louis
is having issues with <=1 inch. It’s kinda sad, really. I’ve seen salt only right next to the door I use at work. None on the roads or at my apartment complex. I’ll give em this snow to get everything sorted out before I start seriously complaining, though.
Single digit temps causing more problems than anything
But what do I know, I’m just sitting at home while the rest of the fam has to go out in it. Such is the sweet life of a college student
270 was a catastrophe
Going up the hills before the 70 and 370 interchanges on 270 north bound there were cars stuck spinning their wheels and fishtailing.

See,
I slid right up 270 (from Dorsett) and got onto 70 pretty easily. There was a semi blocking both the 70 exit lanes, but traffic was at least moving. 70 was kinda painful until Lindbergh, but nothing I haven’t dealt with w/o snow. 64 is apparently miserable, though. A coworker’s wife has been in traffic for like, 3 hours.
It took me an hour to go from Manchester on 270 on to 370 and out to 94
I’m kind of amazed how many people thought it would be a great idea to drive their rear-wheel-drive cars today.

Kansas City got about an inch...
In overland park the highways are dry, primary roads are wet, residential streets are barely slick. All had been treated by 6:30am
"I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order. Like they should be."
That's because JOCO has the money to treat the roads.
Actually my drive to work this morning on the KCMO side was just fine. They treated this like it was a major storm.

Pretty sure they're still trying to make up for the absolute debacle in KC a couple years ago
…when they failed to clear the big snow on Christmas, then all the snow got packed into ice, then it snowed again, and Funkhouser said they weren’t going to clear the new snow because the loose snow on top was safer to drive in than the hard-packed snow underneath.

Post victory links - always more fun!
Saw one of my favorite license plates today. KS plates with a MU fake plate in the front (they only have one license plate in KS) and a Mizzou face plate on the back license. Love those people. That lady is probably held hostage to KS in some way and shows her Tiger pride.
And if KANSAS City is really a Beaker city, then it’s not showing itself right now. Downtown KC is Tiger Central with lots of people in Tiger gear. Love it!

Is no one going to metnion flip trying to hang out in ISU's huddle and the mayor pushing him out
That was awesome, and to see flip laughing as he walked away showed just how confident that kid can be. I love it!

Re: Bomani Jones -- The "free" education isn't free. It's just low-cost.
I understand your objection, that the education often goes unacknowledged in the debate. I think we can (and should) all acknowledge that T.J. Soyoye, to cite just one example, should be on a Mount Rushmore of ideal student-athletes. So I’m not (nor do I think Bomani is) arguing that athletes get nothing out of the deal.
But we both know that a common misperception about the “full” scholarship is that it is some sort of coupon covering any and all costs associated with the degree. In truth, scholarships operate more like insurance, where there are limits to coverage that vary depending on the carrier. Most athletes on full scholarship will come out of pocket at least some for pretty standard expenses. Remember, there are 120-something FBS schools and lots more Cal-State Santa Barbaras, Missouri States, and UMass-Lowells than Alabamas and Notre Dames. Many kids at the non-glamour programs are coming out of school with debts comparable to non-athletes (and far too often, with no degree).
Athletes get a substantial reduction in the cost of education to be sure (and I’m ONLY talking football, leaving non-revenue/women’s sports out of the equation where scholarships cover far less), but that makes it a “low cost” education. Not free.
The point isn’t to quibble. Rather, it’s to say that it’s logical a stretch to characterize playing sports for a scholarship as any sort of proper exchange. That people who should know better continue to perpetuate this misnomer is infuriating. (I’m looking right at you Doug Gottlieb.)
Contrast that to a story a colleague told me a few years back. He was at one time the faculty representative to the SEC from my school. He told me that Mike Slive granted his four top lieutenants $250k bonuses each one year at the SEC championship because they had a million dollar overage in their budget. They had to spend it or lose it. (My colleague knows this because the faculty reps had to approve the expenditure.)
So, at one end of the spectrum you have kids who know they’ll never play a down in the NFL walking out of school with injuries that make them almost impossible to insure (read: pre-existing condition) and health care costs that will rival the average cancer patient. And, a bill for a degree—albeit a smaller bill than most—that they may not have earned when their scholarship runs out. Then at the other end of the spectrum four guys take home a million bucks because, literally, it was give it away or lose it. Something has to change.

Aren't pre-existing conditions for insurance purposes eliminated under Obamacare?

Assuming it stays in law, yes
Individual insurance policies would have to switch from individual underwriting to a so-called ‘community rating’ model where everyone with the same characteristics (I know they can consider age, can’t consider gender, and can’t consider most other things, but I’m not sure of the list) gets the same price on the same policy, regardless of the individual’s health status.
Won't take effect for a bit though, iirc

I think a large part of the problem is that everyone wants to oversimplify this issue.
On one hand we like to color the schools as being opportunists because they are making a profit on their sports and some feel that the scholarship isn’t enough. I take issue with that at a basic level simply because I don’t hear those same voices speaking out for the kid on an academic scholarship that is scraping by and could use a pay increase. I also don’t hear a lot of calls to take care of the athlete’s in non-revenue sports, for that matter. Does a football player have it worse than a kid on the track team or a girl playing tennis? No, the difference is only that football brings in money and diving, softball, lacrosse and their ilk do not. Until these students are included this has nothing to do with players who are scraping by because we’re only talking about those students playing revenue sports.
Now, to be fair, that comparison between the football player and an academic student isn’t exactly equal. The athlete has NCAA regs to follow and some of those are huge hindrances. Jobs are a problem between practice and studying and those regs can be a problem here. But let us remember that the regs came into effect because boosters and schools tried to game the system. In the end this all comes back to a ridiculous attempt to solve the corruption problem and that is going to continue as long as one player is considered more valuable than another. This is an economic certainty and well-wishing and a laughable payment isn’t going to change that.
What I take umbrage over is the fact that so many people act as if it is unfair and that the universities are holding a gun to the athlete’s head. If an athlete doesn’t want to play, he doesn’t have to. I know, “If they want to play football its the only real option!” If that is your complaint I direct your complaints to the NFL who, as far as I am concerned, has the largest share of the blame in this situation.
just had to share this with everyone
