Mizzou 84, Texas 73: Pressey, Denmon And Tigers Move To 16-1

COLUMBIA, MO - JANUARY 14: Fans hold giant signs depitcing the faces of Marcus Denmon #12, Steve Moore #32, and Matt Pressey #3 of the Missouri Tigers as members of the Texas Longhorns walk onto the court after a timeout during the game on January 14, 2012 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

Phil Pressey (points and assists) and Marcus Denmon (points and rebounds) each recorded double-doubles as Mizzou moved to 16-1 with an 84-73 win at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers scored a knockdown midway through the first half, then attempted to coast the rest of the way. Texas cut the lead to five points in the second, but Pressey took over. It was Very, Very Good Flip today.

From Profootballtalk.com
With running back Pierre Thomas catching a short pass from Drew Brees deep in San Fran territory and instantly accelerating toward the goal line, Whitner flattened Thomas with a legal helmet-to-helmet hit, forcing Thomas to fumble the ball.

Both players were running pretty much parellel to the ground, there was no where to hit up but a head level.

Ejection is a bit far

But after more looks he certainly came in pretty high. Though the player was very low to the ground.

by shaffe on Jan 14, 2012 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

No way

Alex Smith got a tap in the face after Harper hit him right in the gut. Nowhere near the hit that Thomas got.

by shaffe on Jan 14, 2012 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

Even still,

any hit to a QB’s helmet is a flaggable offence whereas the hit on Thomas was “incidental contact” re: the rulebook definition of 2 players colliding head-2-head.

A couple others:

1. Return a fumble or interception on a 2 point conversion to the opposite endzone (the “defending” team might actually get 2 for this since it an attempt for 2).
2. Return a blocked or faked 1 point conversion to the other endzone.

North Carolina, Ohio State, Indiana, and Michigan State all lost this week. UNC probably stays ahead I suppose, but maybe tOSU finally falls some?

'Cuse, Kentucky, Baylor, Duke probably 1-4

big jumble after that, though UNC, OSU, and MSU will have 3 losses. IU now has 2.

Tip for the day

Do not count out San Francisco, even if they have to go to Lambeau next week.

Helluva game.

by shaffe on Jan 14, 2012 7:18 PM CST reply actions

green bay probably won't turn the ball over 5 times.

and rodgers is better under pressure than brees. i was very impressed with sf’s secondary for most of the game, though.

What do you have against the ring-tailed lemur?

by threadkiller on Jan 14, 2012 7:26 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe not 5 times

But SF had a ton to do with all 5 of those turnovers. I would be surprised if they don’t get at least 2 takeaways next week no matter who they play.

by shaffe on Jan 14, 2012 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

i mean, they had to make the play,

but 4 of those were boneheaded giveaways by n.o. i think we’d see a shootout, something sf’s not accustomed to (if it even comes to that. i like ny’s chances better than i would sf’s).

this is way more true about aaron rodgers...

but tom brady has a pretty good system to work with.

i don't like the aaron rodgers argument either.

matt cassel came in and went 11-5 in the same system. matt cassel isn’t THAT good.

yeah, i agree.

the chiefs haven’t had a good, young franchise qb to build around since i’ve been alive. that’s a few moons right there.

As a Pats fan, I have to inquire

What “system”? The Patriots have had about five different offensive coordinators during Brady’s tenure, and each of his Super Bowl series featured different approaches to the passing and running games.

one game from matt flynn against a miserable lions defense?

I don't get the angst

It’s a song. And a musically terrible one anyway.

It’s unpopular, but I don’t get our nation’s obsession with songs and flags. Clinging to symbolism is the recourse of nations with nothing meaningful to celebrate.

by MizKC on Jan 14, 2012 8:40 PM CST up reply actions

most nations take pride in their flag and anthem.

and you’re entitled to say chiefs at the end all you want. it is the land of the free and the home of the brave, after all.

From the Star message boards
Why do they let that jackas* Jon Sundvold into the Phog to call KU basketball games? He was practically screaming everytime Iowa State made a 3pt. He should be banned!

hahaha
