#Mizzou is No. 2 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN coaches' polls just released this morning.

Mizzou's No. 2 ranking is its highest [this late in the season] since the Tigers were No.1 in the 13th week of the 1989-90 season.

The Trib's Steve Walentik on Twitter. Rarefied air, to say the least.

Yep, I was in school for that season

I remember we swept Kansas, both times we played them we were in the top 5 and at least one if not both times they were ranked number one and we grabbed the top spot in the rankings after both of those wins that year.

I remember the t-shirt sales from that season.

Every week they had to update the backs with the poll changes and they sold out constantly. I am now wondering where that t-shirt went….

Me too!

The Roloff’s “Missouri’s Got Balls” shirt that the university wouldn’t let them make because it was offensive (two balls—either football or basketball—with one slightly lower than the other) got changed to “We’re Number 1!” with the same balls.

Those also constantly sold out, and Roloff had something in the Maneater saying “if you get on TV with one of our shirts, we’ll give you something”.

he edited it slightly

@Steve_Walentik: That last tweet should have said highest ranking this late in the season since 13th week of 1989-90. MU also got to No. 2 early in 2001-02.

by jschooltiger on Jan 23, 2012 11:50 AM CST reply actions

Blumberg tweeted about the 01-02 ranking, but I knew that was very early in the season

I would have guessed 90-91 for the last high ranking this late in the season, but I knew it was the year we traded back and forth with KU.

How high did we get in 1994?

Yeah, not sure what I think about that

it depends on his logic:
A) Kansas has a tough schedule and their 3 losses vs the toughest schedule in the country would likely be seen by the committee as more deserving of a 1 seed than Mizzou’s 1 loss against a relatively weak schedule.

B) Kansas is likely to beat Mizzou and win the Big 12, so they’re gonna get the #1 seed.

If his argument is A, then it’s logical and makes sense. If it’s B, then that’s crap. The whole point of his phoney baloney job is to look at the bracket if the season ended today, isnt’ it?

A follows, anyway.

although if you figure that the games between the big three will go a long way to determine the winner of the big12 regular season, mizzou probably has the upper hand with a win @baylor. the whole thing’s a little to speculative for my taste either way.

“have played a much better schedule across the board”
KU has the second-best (behind Syracuse) record against the teams in his field

In choosing tOSU over MU, he says it’s all nonconference schedule. “Historically … a sub-250 nonleague schedule … is very difficult to overcome in this kind of comparison”

thanks

don’t have insider, so couldn’t read his explanation. that all makes sense except that leading the conference after five games, especially having the easiest first five games of anyone in conference (according to kenpom), is a bit misleading. not having a loss puts you in the driver’s seat, i guess, but it’d be a miracle for anyone to escape big12 play without a loss or two.

by kevinf on Jan 23, 2012 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

KU has had a cakewalk so far in Big 12 play. No wonder they’re undefeated. They’ve yet to play a tough team on the road. Mizzou’s played 2 maybe 3 of those games already and has a 2-1 record in them (if you include Iowa State).

by planb247 on Jan 23, 2012 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

Texas is one of the tougher teams

and they might just give us our money’s worth next weekend but still we’ve played 3 of our 5 toughest road games and KU has only played 1.

by M Krip on Jan 23, 2012 10:48 PM CST up reply actions

I think the leading the conference after 5 games is a little bogus

Lunardi is projecting the bracket as though the season ended today, and as such, he’s identifying conference champions for automatic bids (this is why he has Bucknell coming out of the Patriot League). I don’t see why it should make much of a difference for major conferences.

My takeaway from the article is that the biggest distinction he’s drawing is that KU has 7 wins against teams in the field. Only Syracuse has as many. Missouri has 3.

by KSinDC on Jan 24, 2012 1:30 AM CST up reply actions

Correction: the record is against the teams being considered for the at-large pool

And MU has 5 wins, not 3

MU: 5-1 against the pool:
California (9 seed)
Illinois (7)
K-State (6)
Iowa State (12)
Texas (first four out)
Baylor (2)

KU: 7-3
Kentucky (1)
Georgetown (3)
Duke (2)
Long Beach State (13)
Davidson (13)
Ohio State (1)
Kansas State (6)
Baylor (2)
Texas (first four out)

by KSinDC on Jan 24, 2012 1:42 AM CST up reply actions

I'm guessing losing to Davidson at home...

Some WV blogger posted a totally unsourced, unverifiable

story that Four ACC teams were think Big XII. What made the story somewhat unbelievable — ahem — was that Pitt, which just joined the ACC, was allegedly among the schools. Combined with the recent imposition of increased buyout penalties and, well, the fact that the alleged problems in the ACC (Duke and NC running the show) are only magnified in the Big XII, and let’s just say I am not putting much stock in this.

by MU'97 on Jan 23, 2012 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

BOTC has a link from a WVU blogger saying that the Big 12 is ripe to attack the ACC

the theory being that the football-centric schools in the ACC would be eager to get away from the more basketball schools who tend to dominate the conference. The Big 12 wants to get to 14 or 16, and if they weaken the ACC, Notre Dame may be convinced to seriously consider the Big 12 when it’s forced to join a conference full-time.

Rational Mizzou Talk, whether you like us or not.

by Andy--01 on Jan 23, 2012 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

No way in hell

There’s a stability hierarchy.

At the top is SEC, Big Ten and Pac-12.
Right below them is ACC.
Below them is Big XII.
Below them is Big East.
Below them is MWC/C-USA/MAC.
Then everyone else.

S*&t flows downhill as they say, and universities trade up. There is no benefit to an ACC team moving to the Big XII. None. The ACC has a good, geographically relevant conference that’s strong in basketball and that has football teams. They are in a position to raid the Big East again if they want and the SEC is really the only conference that is in a position to grab ACC teams. I know everyone left wants to believe that the Big XII is a conference that everyone fights to get into, but they ignore the fact that the teams fighting to get in are in worse conferences.

The whole thing has been unpredictable in a lot of ways

But there are still ground rules to realignment. The assumption is that the Big XII’s media deal is going to be so huge that it will dwarf all other deals… but that’s what they said about the last one. Both the ACC and SEC will renegotiate their deals and a link shown earlier shows that Mizzou and A&M could be worth $114 million to the SEC if they set up a network. I don’t think the Big XII deal is going to be enough to lure away an ACC team. And besides, Swofford is a lot smarter and savvier than Marinatto.

Very good defense/goaltending

a few play-makers short on offense of being one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the league.

Had the Blues won in Detroit last night, they would have moved into the top-spot in the conference by 1 point with a game-in-hand on the Red Wings.

Kansas looking soft tonight...

I think this is a team that plays to the level of it’s competition.

Not good for us...

But great for TAMU

I guess we have to cheer for the Aggies huh? SEC! SEC!

NO

TAMU HAS THE MOST ATHLETICALLY GIFTED TEAM SINCE LAST YEARS TAMU SQUAD

yeah, but we beat them.

hence, they are just one more vastly overrated team we’ve vanquished on our way to the weakest 18-1 start since snakes started slithering.

What do you have against the ring-tailed lemur?

NO

THE COACHING WAS NOT UP TO TAMU STANDARDS. SHERMAN CAUSED THIS!

Seriously though, go Aggies. Beergut must be typing furiously keeping his 5 commentators up to date

2 fanbases that have never been beaten.

their teams simply give games away as a tax write-off.

I really believe it's the aura of Allen Fieldhouse.

Even if they’re beating or keeping pace with the chickenhawks, they expect to screw up sooner or later and lose the game.

Their offense goes through Taylor, not Robinson

T Rob can only do so much on his own, and if Taylor plays poorly, so does the rest of the team. With our PGs hounding him and his tendency to turn over the ball, I like our chances.

Careful...

Hounding could bring up some racist overtones… Hahaha jk

They get TAMU without Middleton and then foul the Aggies point guard (no call of course)

on the last play of the half and he gets hurt. Talk about catching some breaks.
