Oklahoma State 79, Missouri 72: Sports Are Stupid Sometimes

Sometimes things go as planned, and sometimes a 38-percent shooter makes 12 of his first 17 shots while your All-American candidate goes 4-for-16 on mostly good looks. Mizzou did plenty of poor things in this one, and we'll get to that tomorrow, but sometimes sports don't make sense. Consider this your "post pictures of puppies and babies to make yourself feel better" thread.

LeBryan Nash shoots 38% from the field and 23% from 3

Today he shot 12 for 18 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3, shooting what I’d guess to be 70-75% jump shots.

That was today in a nutshell.

Career highs by 2 freshmen

and they shot nearly 120% from the field. These things are anomalies.

That said, Denmon is starting to worry me a little and we saw some very inopportune bad Phil tonight that worries me about some of the more important games we are likely to play in.

All in all, let’s go home, let’s destroy TT, and let’s gear up for next week’s huge games.

Typical MU Athletics

We get a big road win at Baylor, then play like we never have been coached against a 9-10 team… so what if Lebryan Nash had a great game, we didn’t guard him at all, MU has done that alot this year (allowing a big scorer to go off) like Rodney McGruder and J’Covan Brown to name a couple…when we needed buckets towards the end Phil Pressey goes into the lane and falls down, English shoots an off-balance three, Mike Dixon gets called for a charge, etc…. just played terrible, also Steve Moore continues to just completely rail anyone who comes in the lane while giving them an And1, Matt Pressey continues to take horrible shots, Dixon continues to force shots, Denmon continues to disappear, the only guy who brings it every night is Ratliffe…MU better get their crap together if they want to go anywhere in March Madness

by ppbf25 on Jan 25, 2012 8:41 PM CST reply actions

We also don't guard players 50 feet from the basket

because they tend to miss a lot when they shoot from there. The same applies to letting LeBryan Nash take 15 jump shots.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Jan 25, 2012 8:42 PM CST up reply actions

he only had one three where he was way deep, but Denmon was waiting for him inside the 3-line if you want to get technical, even though Nash has shot a low percentage this year he was already showing a hot hand in the first half by knocking down several jumpers, and we continue to let him shoot uncontested in the second half…makes no sense

by ppbf25 on Jan 25, 2012 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

Stop settling for mediocrity!

I mean everyone was predicting Mizzou was going to be 18-2 and challenging for a national title after losing 5 scholarship players from last year and a new coach with a losing conference record. /smh

what im trying to say is that we could be even better if we use our head a little bit, cant the coaches see that everytime somone gets in the lane and steve moore is in he fouls the shit out of them

by Hapgrass on Jan 25, 2012 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

how am i seeing it differently than the coaches and players, im sure the whole team is more down on their effort tonight than i am being on them, frank haith is a demanding coach…idk how anyone on this message board can take a positive away from this game

by ppbf25 on Jan 25, 2012 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

It's not so much taking away a positive

It’s accepting that we tough losses on the road happen, and that while we had our chances, OSU played well enough to win.

by MU'97 on Jan 25, 2012 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

And in a 30+ game season, not every game ends positively

I understand people have raised their expectations for this season but we’ve played 2 poor games this season and both were on the road. Stuff happens and the big picture is that we are 18-2. One game isn’t going to ruin my day.

by Hapgrass on Jan 25, 2012 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

yes i realize we are 18-2 and will still be in the top ten, yet a loss to a 9-10 OSU team full of underclassmen is alot different than losing to a kansas state or baylor or kansas

by ppbf25 on Jan 25, 2012 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

I do realize that and considering I expected this team to lose multiple games like this season

and they’ve only lost 2 so far is pretty impressive. I’m going to be happy with how this team has performed for 18 out of 20 games than get bent out of shape over tonights game. This was a bad lose no doubt about it. But I’m not going to go apeshit and call out the coaches who have built this team out of the shambles of last year’s team that crumbled during conference play. I’ll be upset if they continue to play like this but these players and these coaches have earned my respect over the course of 20 games and I’m confident in them that they can improve their play on the road. Sometimes in College Bball teams have a bad night and the other team gets hot, upsets do happen especially on the road. This isn’t the first time a Mizzou team has stunk at Iba, fortunately it will be the last time

by Hapgrass on Jan 25, 2012 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

Good lord, calm yourself.

We only won 1 road big 12 game with this team last season. What made you think we wouldn’t have AT LEAST one of these this year? Oh ya, reading all the national hype that just started paying attention when we beat Baylor. Calm down – road big 12 is terribly tough, luckily March Madness is its own monster. (SEE: VCU, BUTLER)

by tigr on Jan 25, 2012 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

i am calm, im just criticizing our team after they lost a game to a crappy team that they couldve won despite Nash’s huge game, and their was alot of hype before the baylor game considering we were already number 5

by ppbf25 on Jan 25, 2012 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

Let's not go to town on each other

While I won’t go as far as the OP, the defense was disappointing tonight save for that 5-7 minute stretch at the beginning of the second half. And yes, as good as Phil can be, when he goes cold he goes really cold.

by threadkiller on Jan 25, 2012 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

And while we can console ourselves that every loses games like this

Dick Vermeil used to tell his teams “Keep losing teams losing”. This is a game Mizzou should have won, so I’m not going to harp on anyone for being more disappointed than if it was, say, Kansas.

One game, not the end of the season, perspective, yada yada yada.

Professor Chaos

put it best in the last thread after the jump link was put up. If Kansas can lose to Davidson and Syracuse can lose to Notre Dame then we can lose to OSU.
Games like this happen in college basketball. We need to regroup and not let road wins start piling up like last year.

by tigers-royals on Jan 25, 2012 8:42 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

the biggest downside is kansas is now MUCH closer to another Big 12 title

you simply cannot lose this game and expect to keep up with them…they’ve had their close games a passed. A lot of games left to be played this was bad…not just another road loss

Our defense was pitiful. You can speak to Nash making literally everything, but the fact is that they had WAAAAAAAAAAY too many open looks in close tonight.

I am alarmed by the lack of focus, and I assume that the coaching staff will fix that by Saturday.

Side note: eff OSU. First 2008 when we’re Top 3, then tonight when we’re number two.

I am glad the refs generally let them play the game

I know there seemed to be a few non-calls, but I far prefer this than the whistlefest you usually get in the Big XII. And it’s hard to complain about refs anyway when an oSu player is ejected for two technical fouls. The fact that Mizzou couldn’t capitalize on that is all on them.

OSU Shot lights out.

and were getting lucky shots to fall too. Plus Missouri seemed to slow it down and played to the pace OSU was wanting, in addition to the fact that nobody could hit a shot and they stopped crashing the boards hard.

The worst part for me was that this was team similar in size and depth to Mizzou. Nash only had an inch or two on English but a good thirty pounds. This is where I wish Haith would have tried to keep Green around and have utilized him against bigger athletic guards, who the regulars couldn’t stop, with his own height and purported athleticism…
