The alarm went off mighty early this morning ... but I guess that's alright since Mizzou won. Despite a general lack of aesthetics, Mizzou is now 3-2 on the road in Big 12 play this season. (Here's your reminder that they were 1-7 last year.)

One last thought on DGB: it struck me as I was perusing other sites last night that the last two times Mizzou fans got this confident/anxious/terrified about something on the Internet were MIZZOUEXPANSIONAPALOOZA™ 2010 and Paintergate. Both ended in crushing disappointment at the time for Mizzou ... but then Mizzou ended up in the SEC instead of the Big Ten, and they ended up with the front-runner for national coach of the year instead of Matt Painter. Losing DGB tomorrow would be disappointing, but if trends hold, Mizzou will just keep moving forward regardless. I'm still confident about DGB, but I'll move on with my life if it doesn't work out.
I'll be in Springfield tomorrow for DGBpalooza, but that's all I've got until then.

So we still have DGB's decision tomorrow
Which might keep us from giving our FULL attention to hate week.
But, I already have this semi-sick feeling about Saturday’s game. Our most hated rival coming to our place for what could be the last time. Most seasons I experience this condition to some degree, but this season’s game obviously has heightened ramifications.
Mizzou and kansas are battling for the final B12 conference championship with Mizzou as a conference member. From a conference standpoint, kansas might consider a win as a “steal”, and would make it very difficult for any team to catch kU in the conference. Mizzou really needs to win this one to stay even with kU in the conference standings. We all know that kansas has dominated the B12 basketball conference – they tell those of us in KC about it all the time. Should would like this final B12 conference champion to be Mizzou. Yeah, kansans will just shrug it off and tell us how they won X number of championships and Mizzou only won one, but at least we’d have the last one.
Mizzou and kansas are both ranked in the top 10 in the country. Gameday in Columbia, and such. So this game has a bit of a national eye, too. Want to beat our rival with the nation watching. And either team’s tournament seeding resume would be bolstered by such a win.
Always get a bit nervous before the kU game. Why is my mental well-being be affected by sports – something over which I have no control? (This would be a very interesting series of summertime blog posts – why do we care – from a sociological/psychological/human perspective) I don’t know, but I care a lot. I can’t help it. In past years the MU/kU game has typically had a lot riding on it. But we knew that there would always be next year. Not this time. No chance to play ‘em in Columbia next year. As a Mizzou fan, I’ve come to dread my team’s failure more than to hope for their success. Guess I’ve been witness to too many heartbreaking outcomes. They’ve been well-chronicled. No need to elaborate. Don’t want another one to live with after Saturday.
This game also represents a lot of history. I’m sure someone (Bill C.) with more eloquent writing ability will appropriately describe the historical significance of the game in the next few days – at least I hope. There’s no question that kansas has a more storied basketball tradition. If you’re not familiar with it, just ask any beaker about it, but be prepared to vomit. It’s a bit too rich for the average stomach. This is part of why beating kU is so great – they can’t stand to lose to us, and we love giving them that feeling. Let’s face it, Mizzou fans revel in kansas’ failure as much as we do our own success. So we must win this final game in Columbia. For all the Mizzou teams that beat the mutant parrot, for Peeler, Sunny, Stipo, NORM, for every Mizzou fan and Every True Son – we have to win this game.
My wife said it best. “We have to beat those bastards.”

It's actually a reference to the Civil War, originally.
From a reporter of that time: “Jayhawkers, Red Legs, and Bushwhackers are everyday terms in Kansas and Western Missouri. A Jayhawker is a Unionist who professes to rob, burn out and murder only rebels in arms against the government. A Red Leg is a Jayhawker originally distinguished by the uniform of red leggings. A Red Leg, however, is regarded as more purely an indiscriminate thief and murderer than the Jayhawker or Bushwhacker. A Bushwhacker is a rebel Jayhawker, or a rebel who bands with others for the purpose of preying upon the lives and property of Union citizens. They are all lawless and indiscriminate in their iniquities.”
Wikipedia!

Related, I stick with “Terrorist Chickens” when referring to our hated Border War rivals. Jayhawkers=terrorists, Jayhawk=chicken. Ipso facto cogito ergo sum Latin words, Terrorist Chickens.

No doubt he is in a funk, but how did the refs turn a blind eye to him getting pummeled by just about every Texas defender last night. He took hit after hit with no whistles. Talk about kicking a guy when he’s down.

Also, on Dixon, I call every one of his shots an FU Shot, it's like he looks at the defender, then dismisses him
Dixon does play FU basketball
I like that attitude. Kinda like Sutherland, right? It does get the best of Dixon at times. But we know that occasionally he’ll drive when he shouldn’t, unnecessarily foul, elbow to face, etc. Take the good with the bad. Love him for it.
How about Haith calling a zone defense to end the game.
That was an amazing call by a coach. Also I think getting Kabongo in foul trouble in the first half helped us tremendously.

The team has in the past seemed somewhat careless in terms of working clock, but last night obviously went too far in the other direction.
I had no problem with the stalling...

would have preferred Flip so he could create for Dixon.
What drove me nuts was when Denmon had it. They had shut him down all game and were in his head. Why we would let him hold it out top was beyond me. It lead to the over and back call and I think another offensive possession where we had to throw up junk.

I will refine my statement to say
That I think we waited too long to get into the offense when we were stalling, which led too to many empty possessions
the stall was as much to protect against foul trouble as run clock, imo.
it had to be done when it was.

I totally agree with you.
It was driving me nuts. More time than not this year, when they intentionally run down the shot clock, they appear to run it down too long and then take some crappy jumpshot with hands in their face.
Yes, it looked like it took them out of the flow of the offense, not to mention
that they were awfully close to half-court over and back violations. I hope we can end up in a happy median: neither taking ill-advised early shots nor stalling too long.

THE STALL works when you score at the end. Mizzou did, but didn’t do it all the time. The teaching moment is that even if you’re going to stall, you still need to work the ball around the perimeter. Perhaps not as close, but certainly not as far back. Hell, perhaps they should just run a weave in between the circles to “Sweet Georgia Brown”
Upholding fine Mizzou traditions in Maryland.

To me, the measure of it not working was that the Tigers coughed up a double digit lead.
I really hope Coach Haith takes a look at this and gets a chance to listen to some of Knight’s crtiique of it.
I like the strategy it's just that it was derailed by a dumb back court violation and an equally dumb elbow to the face.
I think there was another bad turnover in there as well. I guess what I’m saying is the strategy is sound as long as the guys on the floor take care of the basketball. we had at least 3 possessions where we didn’t even get a shot.
That's right Ice Man. I am dangerous

What was this all about? Do you'all recall one possession when Flip and Denmon
seem to be arguing with one another and waiving each other off? As much as I like Denmon, I think Flip is the floor general.

you think it was his night
or did you want him with the ball. If you wanted him with the ball, what had he done up to that point that made you think he was going to do something positive with it.
The kid is a great great player. But he was really off last night. Plus, the refs weren’t calling the contact he was drawing under the rim. I don’t think he should be benched or that the sky is falling, but part of being a leader is knowing when to step aside and let the others carry you home.

i'm saying a senior, especially one with his accomplishments,
doesn’t defer to a sophomore who still suffers from frequent brain cramps. denmon wasn’t trying to take the game over, he probably just saw a mismatch. i’ll ask you this: which player makes more head scratching mistakes?

Flip
but I think that question only matters in a static situation. I think basketball is about getting the ball in the hands of the guy who is hot.

We would only be guessing about the reason for their "arugment"
We don’t know that Marcus was wanting the ball, do we?
I'm thinking of when he waived Flip off holding the ball at the top
and then lost his dribble and it eventually because the back court violation.
The fact that Denmon had the ball and was waiving off Flip, who was coming to get the ball, makes it somewhat certain that Marcus wanted the ball. Possibly he just didn’t want to give it to Flip, but I believe he waived off Dixon a few seconds before that as well.

I remember one situation where Flip had the ball at the top of the key.
Denmon came over to get the ball, Phil tried to wave him to the corner to create more space and Denmon wouldn’t budge. Phil had a very frustrated look on his face at the time.

I just watched the first half again.
That was with about 4:45 left on the clock. That is the one I noticed.
I kind of liked the stall strategy
We’re good when Phil and Dixon drive to the basket. Usually open shots for others, a layup, or a foul on the opponent results. Tough on the road, though. We missed a front end of a 1and1, an uncharacteristic turnover or two, and the whole flagrant foul ordeal was kind of tough to watch. Usually we’d ice a game that way. Maybe just fine tune the stall, and I’m fine with it.
And we absolutely MUST have Ricardon on the floor when we go to it.
His ability play the two man pick and roll with the point is excellent. No offense to Moore but Ricardo plays it to perfection.

There were a lot of comments Saturday about the team being tired. There were a few instances in which Defensive rebounds may have gone to Mizzou if they had their hands up. A lot of knuckles were on the ground in the defensive sets. I wonder if Haith gives them the day off today.

Yeah, the Texas teams are far behind the old Big 8 teams to me
And the Oklahoma teams have kind of fallen in with the Texas teams. But I still feel a closer affinity for them than other conferences. All that will change next year, of course, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

It's sad because
I would actually have no problem cheering for Texas if they acted like decent conference mates. I like their football team and Mack Brown far more than I like Oklahoma and Stoops. But they’re just such jerks in the board room and they’re so dismissive of everyone else that it’s impossible to like them.

Obviously, you have the obnoxious, disrespectful fans, but they’re by far the vocal minority, and we have our own fans like that (fire Pinkel, start Berkstresser!), so I can’t blame them. Obviously administrators are businessmen making business decisions, just like ours are, and anyone can spin those narratives however they want.
But by and large, the majority of the students and fans that I’ve interacted with from every school have been pretty down to earth, good natured folks, so those are the people I try to judge the schools by.

it doesn't completely solve the problem, but it gives access to a slippery slope
fairly simple. kU and MU are not competing anymore. So it isn’t bad to cheer for MU right now. Plus, MU being good means that Kentucky will suffer. If Kentucky suffers, then kU can pull in front of them for all time wins. So really, cheering for MU is like cheering for kU.
Now, that is the twisted logic I will use. I would never ever ever tell her that. Just simply lead her along the path so she comes to the conclusions by herself.
I’m thinking 2016-17 I’ll have her actively rooting for Mizzou basketball. If I get that, I can get our children to cheer for Mizzou. If I get the kids, I win the war.

the move is definitely part of the plan. Kentucky is going to be a major part of it.
Busting Bill C since September 19, 2011 10:19 CST, 8:19 PDT.
the second part of the plan
involves taking her to a Mizzou bar or tailgate (tailgate is better) where she will get the exact opposite treatment. People give food, drink, smile and talk.

I do need to join in on a mizzou tailgate this year
She really enjoyed the home football game we went to this year.

we are trying to win fans here, not give them ammo to make fun of us with.

I guess I should just start assuming everyone on here is married and adjust my comments accordingly. I think Rugby is the only person on here that isn’t married at this point…

I had my time to make bad life choices (which resulted in some awesome stories). I’m comfortable with being old, boring and monogamous. There’s thin line between young, single and crazy and old, single and creepy.

Unfortunately for the Beakers … the result doesn’t ACTUALLY count towards the Border War standings and they are well on their way to losing once again.

I like the We Are Mizzou rap video.
I don’t like how they mention Jarrett Sutton but not Matt Pressey though. I think they caught all 7 players that actually play besides Matt. And if they had to choose a walk-on, they should have either mentioned all three or none of them.
