Tuesday Night Live Thread!
This isn't a "give us some roundtable questions!" thread, since there will be no roundtable tomorrow (since I'll be on my way to and from Wednesday). Instead, simply consider this a Nervous Energy thread in anticipation of what is a pretty big day for recruiting tomorrow. Have any sins you want to confess (that can't wait until the August karma thread)? Go for it. Anxiety? Confidence? Anger? Bluster? Bring it on.

Mike Onuohu (SP?), DE from OK, and

I want to start by saying that DGB seems like a helluva kid with a solid support staff and a good head on his shoulders.
Full Disclosure: I grew up an Arkansas fan. But I never became the psycho Hog fan that we’ve all seen on the interwebs this week. Unlike our brethren to the South, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish DGB the best no matter what he chooses tomorrow.
I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!
I've been so busy at work this week
that I haven’t had time to be too nervous about this. Also, the fact that I’ve worked so hard this week in the field of social welfare means that I should have accumulated a LOT of good karma for Mizzou.

People are gonna have to bring it hard in the DGB thread tomorrow,

CONFIDENCE.
For once, I am confident in our chances to have something monumentally good happen to us!
by CapnCribbs on Jan 31, 2012 5:42 PM CST via mobile reply actions
So am I! BIG TIME!
…which kind of hurts my confidence, actually.
"KU, you're nothing to me now. You're not a rival, you're not a friend. I don't want to know you or what you do."
If it helps....
I once took a crap in a dudes swimming bag I didn’t like and then told the life guards at the local pool that I saw another kid I didn’t like doing it…
I was believed and the kid didn’t come to school again because his dad beat him so bad he was put in the hospital for a LONG time…. I wish I could take the beating the kid took to get over how guilty I feel..
That is my confession and knowing I am doing it to help recruit DGB seems lame but if it helps I’ll take one for the team
It was his step dad and he did go to jail..
if i remember right it wasn’t for very long though… And the kid had two broken ribs but one of them hit a kidney or liver or something… James Latempt was his name. I tried finding him on Facebook or on the interwebs to see how he ended up turning out but I must be spelling his name wrong or something
wow, that is seriously some my name is earl type stuff there.

this is just sad
As you know, there are many of us on RMN that have young kids. The talk of child abuse is deeply disturbing to me. I know this is just the internets, but I don’t feel so good anymore after reading your post.
Irish provenance of the schwa pronunciation of vowels in weakly stressed syllables -> Missoura
So...
Am I the only one that is really looking past the DGB thing and ready for the kU game?
DGB would be awesome, but spanking the jhawks would make me 100 times more pumped
kU = present
DGB = future. We want to have more of these big moments, which signing DGB potentially allows us to do.
Try not to take me too seriously
No
DGB would be awesome, and gives me hopes for something really special… but beating KU this year in this game at home is about as big as big gets… until we go to Kansas and beating them at their home in our last game would probably taste better than beating them at home.
Actually
Beating them in both games would possibly feel better than winning a National Championship (though it is really close)
No. they've got stuff to brag on
(winning last game at Hearnes, having huge advantage in all-time record, etc)
As nice as sweeping them in the men’s major sports would be this year, winning a NC is SOOOO much better.
Not only is it a National Championship, which is something Mizzou hasn’t gotten in any sport in most of our lifetimes, but it takes away 2 of our rivals’ chief smack-points: Never won a title, Never been to a FF.

Yep. Winning a NC is bigger than beating kU.
However, I still want the Mizzou BB team to unleash hell to the point that it results in a win, at least at Mizzou Arena.

Football.

by galactahack on Jan 31, 2012 6:34 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
getting DGB would be fantastic
but beating KU twice would be better… beating them 3 times would be amazing… beating them 4 times would be the holy grail
I'll tell you after the basketball season
by itself, beating KU isn’t as good as getting a long-term bonus to one of our programs.
But, if beating KU twice gets us an undisputed B12 title and a #1 seed, it’s better.
As great as future success is, it’s not as good as current success.

Sweeping Texas was like redemption for destroying our conference
Sweeping ku will be a the perfect way to end this rivalry as we walk tall into the SEC. Getting DGB and all these other good recuits may allow us that next step up we are looking for but whooping ku on the field AND on the court will be savored and relived for years to come. The rivalry has become a part of who we are and it will be nice to close that chapter with a win over ku.

When Gary Pinkel retires in five years or so...
Who would you like Mizzou to hire?
"I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order. Like they should be."
I think Christensen would be ideal
But Eberflus, Steckel or Yost would all be fine in my mind. I’d like to see Mizzou build an in-house coaching pipeline that they don’t have to go outside of, so we wouldn’t have to go through a whole-sale coaching change and force the whole team to learn a new system, new terminology, etc. while still bringing in new ideas.
by Damnatio Memoriae on Jan 31, 2012 6:43 PM CST up reply actions
Thing is, Christensen is only 9 years younger than Pinkel, and Steckel is only 5 years
And if Yost is serious about not wanting to be a HC, that cuts the home-grown options down considerably. Downside of having such great continuity I guess.
Eberflus is a lot younger, but he seems content to be a pro position coach. And honestly, I’m not super enthused about him as a successor at this point.
by Transmogrified Tiger on Jan 31, 2012 7:08 PM CST up reply actions
Well, I think it's kind of a flawed premise to being with
I think Pinkel will coach longer than that, unless coaching in the SEC is so much more stressful that he burns out. And Christensen has the head coaching experience now, and if he coached as long as Pinkel that means he could give us 9 solid years. And in 5 years, maybe Eberflus will have made DC somewhere, and HC won’t be as big of a jump.
Heck who knows that the landscape will look like in 5 years? Maybe by that point Steck and Yost will have moved on, and Odom will be head coach at a smaller school and looking for an opportunity. I’m just idly speculating.

After spending my work day listening to all my Big 12 coworkers telling me that last shot was a foul
I’m going with 2 of them to watch ISU-KSU tonight (one from each school). My office has a representative from each Big 12 school except the 2 Oklahoma schools and Baylor. It makes conference play pretty fun (especially this season).
you should just admit that it was a foul
and then tell them it just further highlights how inept the Big 12 conference is. They can’t even get officials who know how to protect their flagship school and who give the benefit of the doubt to the school that is leaving them.

So I didn't think I was getting over-anxious about recruiting and DGB, then I had a dream...
I woke up at 9:30 (supposed to be at work at 8) and before calling into work to tell them I overslept I checked Rock M Nation and Bill already had a post up about why we would be alright without DGB. So I kept reading because I didn’t see where he signed. Then I saw it…..Ball State. Which would be awesome. But then I actually woke up this morning and it was Tuesday.
The only way my brain made that connection is a couple years ago I made Ball State into a powerhouse on NCAA on my PS3 and would have the leading receiver every year.

My confession
Getting DGB would be great for the football program, but this basketball season and Frank Haith’s figerprints on the basketball program mean much more to me. This team is special.
by CBonerfied on Jan 31, 2012 6:52 PM CST via mobile reply actions
I can see that
This is going to sound mercenary (because it is) but from a program perspective, DGB is important because he gives us a better chance of winning games. The basketball team is winning games, which in the end is what really matters.

Winning a NC
And supporting both Mizzou football and bball is important. In either one, it is all about one game at a time until we win a NC. The next game at this time is getting our recruits tomorrow and then focus on bball, one game at a time.

I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!
That can't be true, Sir
They won the Nat Titile with Cam, and we all know the spread CANNOT work in the SEC. They must’ve just been copying Arkansas or something..

UK runs a "Yahtzee offense"
They run a lets scrambled it up and toss it on the field and see what happens. I guess you could say it was more (at least this past season) “pro style” under center type offense. But they did run a WR AT QB AND STILL WON AGAINST TENNESSE!!!! Seriously don’t know if that’s how bad UT is…or how good UK is with a WR at QB

ok, watching the michigan state illinois game
are the Big 10 schools actually good at defense, or is this just offensive ineptitude? 38-37 with less than 3 minutes left?
I watched a Wisconsin game a decade ago...
I think the final score was 48-27 or some such nonsense. Full court press all game, and a horrifyingly slow offense. It was great to watch, cheering for Wiscy. Otherwise I’d have clawed my eyes out.
I mean like mizzou used to when chase was taking snaps.

Hmm.. Auburn may be the only one.
Florida a few years ago.
We resemble both of those highly successful systems right now right now by the way. Running QB, great running backs, up and coming wide receivers. Bend don’t break defense. BUT DONT GET EXCITED. We suck and always will.

With another year to keep deepening his understanding of the offence
And building a relationship with the other players, I think we can expect more from Mr. Franklin. He won’t look like a pro style QB doing it, but with his talents, he will create the same foils that helped similar QB’s win a NC for both Auburn and Florida

on tuesday i walked onto the field and and saw some doosher with a blue shirt that said ‘ku football’ on the front. i chuckled to myself at his poor life choices and started talking to someone else. a few seconds later, he turned around and the back of the shirt says ‘believe’. by this point, about half the guys are looking at me because of my uncontrollable laughter.
then i told the head trainer to charge that dumbass triple and walked back to my office.

mizzou vs hogs
I was recruited by Mizzou and Arkansas. I was from Springfield, Mo. Visited Ark first and Mizzou last. This is probably where our paths diverge. Arkansas started recruiting me my junior year, they would call me all the time. MU started the recruitment my senior year . None of what you think mattters(coach, record, distance from home) mattered. What really made my decision easy was playing for my home state. The MU campus had a sense of history, academics, familiarity…U of A felt foreign(maybe it was the accents). I hope DGB will feel the same way and come home to play in front of people that will celebrate his journey. I didn’t take Mizzou to the promise land but saturday afternoons sure felt like it and wherever and whatever choice he makes I’m sure we’ll at least share that feeling. Best of luck to you DGB. MIZ!

This argument between Hogville and TB...
Is HILARIOUS! Both claim to have concrete sources saying he’s going to Mizzou/Arkansas!
12 hours away
and I just can’t hold it anymore. As many of you may have figured out, I am originally from Springfield. One of my buddies is a teacher at Hilcrest. He told me that DGB asked Franklin to do the Superman gag on TV. Apparently they really hit it off and are e texting all the time. Anyway, this guy tells me that DGB’s dad told him that he was a lock for Mizzou. No questions asked.
Also, I’m a wizard. And you should send me your bank account numbers so that I can free up some cash for you from Nigeria – where I’m a prince.

So I have been trying to lose weight.
And in the process of that, I have tried to cut out carbs and fat. So when I saw that they made surgar/fat free pudding, I scooped some up to help with the sweet tooth cravings that always come. I dumped the powder in a bowl, put in the milk and stirred, and into the fridge it went. 2 hours later, still just chocolate milk. Read the directions, saw it had to boil it (What???) So I did. Put it back in the fridge. Half our later, chocolate milk, maybe like half the consistency of real pudding. Now I’m eating it like it is melted ice cream and upset that I can cook a restaurant quality roast, but fail at making a two ingredient dish…

Based on very little other than personal experience
Your best bet is just to not buy the stuff at all. When I had to change what I was eating after I started working and didn’t have tons of time to lift and run anymore, I just used up the food I had and replaced it all with lean protein and vegetables. You won’t find a processed carb or fat in my house (except for a few things my wife keeps around for baking). It took awhile, but like breaking any habit, I really don’t think about them or crave them anymore.

general point being that MSG isn't nearly as big a deal as it was made out to be
and the vast majority of people who have issues controlling their weight have them for fairly simple reasons (the two I mentioned, fried stuff dipped in ranch f**king dressing, etc).
I believe in the The Black & Gold Standard
Agreed. But I've had to break an addiction before, and it's tough.
So anything that can cause that is something to be avoided.

and in all honesty, if one is to really consider what goes into their food
it’s really important to look at where your meat comes from.. the vast majority of meat in grocery stores (especially chicken and pork) are pumped so full of drugs and chemicals it’s disgusting.. and that’s usually after living truly horrible existence.

if you care about quality of food and/or feel we have some kind of obligation to treat animals in a humane manner
it’s a sorry state of affairs.. I love eating meat, and I think that’s okay as long as the animal lives a decent life (it’s not like cows were immortal before humans started killing them for meat, after all). But I would suggest buying as much local, free-range, and organic meat as possible. Better for you, better for the land, better for the animals. Sure its typically more expensive (unless you find a good way to buy direct, or raise the animals yourself), but personally I think it’s worth it.
I believe in the The Black & Gold Standard
If it was possible on my budget...

it is tough
and I’m by no means perfect on the subject, but often times it’s just a matter of eating a little less meat or using it differently (buy, cook, and use whole chickens, for instance)
I believe in the The Black & Gold Standard
Ha I buy the precooked whole chickens at walmart
and snack on it all week. Helps keep a lean source of energy at hand, and the more little snacks you eat and less big meals, the more fat you burn, or so ive heard

they have bred and drugged those chickens into a state where they grow so abnormally large so fast that they live their entire lives essentially on their knees (if you buy whole chickens, you can often see ammonia burns on the knees from where they’ve knelt in their excrement). That and they basically live their whole existence in a space the size of a textbook.

I have to disagree on a certain degree.
Yes, people do not know moderation any more but I suggest to not dismiss the effects of MSG on our bodies. If MSG is not a big deal, then why is it not allowed in baby food? After all the studies I have been reading, all the medical research, the results lead me to believe it is worse than what is being portrayed.

Want to try to lose 100, but honestly that’s probably far, far too much (I’d be down to about what I was when I graduated high school in 1994). If I can lose 60, I’ll be happy.
Still…aiming at 100.
That is a great goal!

Not going to let that happen again. I’m also going to continue running 5k’s like I have for the last 2 years. Need to be healthier.

Do sprints
I don’t like running distance, so I do a lap or two to warm up, then 5 laps sprinting the straightaways and walking the curves, then another lap or two to cool down. If you push yourself on all 10 100s, you’ll feel like you’re going to hurl by the time you’re done, and it won’t take more than maybe 15-20 minutes.

We are doing the show over at the Clinton Club, and will have a sit-down with Coach Pinkel.
Anything you guys want to ask him (not wine-related)?

Actually yeah
What is he most excited about with the move to the SEC besides the new competition
What are some of the new improvements/things the administration is doing that he is most excited about
When will the new uniforms be released, and maybe two or three words to describe them?
Can the rugby team practice/play on Faurot?

How does he see the coaching effort levels in recruiting in the new SEC states
in terms of payoff level?
(ie how much harder are they going to have to work to get the level of kids they get now, and also increase the talent level)

How is Josey doing?
Will he be ready by the AZ St. game? Feelings on the signing class? Which signees will be expected to contribute immediately? With only two returning TEs on the roster, will we see more 4 WR sets? I would have more, but it’s late and the old brain is grinding to a halt…
