So my fiance and I made the game last night (props jbecking)

It is a nice pat on the back to RMN when other sites on SB Nation and other sport blogs pale in comparison.
In terms of content and contributions. Go on many other sites and they are lucky to get a handful of comments. RMN seems to blow up on a regular basis in the volume and diversity. The fact of the level of class and intellect is nice and welcoming.

well, I'm one of 'them'
and very much understand what it takes to do something. Plus can state what exactly that means to a non-technical person in an understandable manner, which many technical folks can’t or don’t care to do.
Call me crazy, but requirements and design left purely to technical folks yields some really crappy products. As does doing zero business testing, which must be what many big companies do, as I continually see things that either don’t work or don’t work right. Have no clue how some of the things I see get out there- nobody bothers to test them in the end product. Which is CRAZY.
end rant—- :)
And we’re much cheaper than developers, even if the tech folks are good at the communication things too, it makes more sense to have us do the writing and business testing.
Just for comparison
at my company, we have engineers who specialize in requirements (integrators), developers, and testers (though most testers are developers). So technically, we’ve got technical people doing all of those, and we turn out relatively bug free products.
/exception, rule, plural of anecdotes, etc.
But a business analyst isn't a requirements analyst
At least not in my world. It is a much broader role that includes internal account management, developing business cases, connecting the dots across business units, etc.
A good business analyst has to understand both technology and the business and be an excellent communicator.
And that's what our managers handle.
Thus, the boring stuff. They take care of all that so I can focus on the fun stuff. It’s a great arrangement.

Just start nodding now
On who would win a fight between a great white shark and a grizzly bear in waist-deep water.
“Let me see. That brings up an interesting point. I read somewhere that a bull has never lost to a lion or a tiger.
“If it’s fresh water, I think grizzly bear. If it’s salt water, I’m going to go with a great white. Grizzly could tap that joker on the head pretty good. But those great whites can get 10 yards long. That would be fun to watch. Can you arrange that? We’d all like to check it out.”

Never forget Wolf Island, or pie! #AHAMF, it's vaguely sordid.
by Spider_Monkey on Jan 4, 2012 9:17 AM CST up reply actions
It seems like depth would matter more than salinity
Unless freshwater would somehow kill a Great White, which I am pretty sure it wouldn’t (as they have wandered into brackish rivers and ponds before. And even if it did, than you;d have to give the victory to the fresh water, rather than the bear.
a little
I think he changed the question to limit it to a great white. A bull shark can survive in fresh water for a few days, so I don’t think a bear gets a huge advantage in the fresh water.
Also, what type of bear we talking about here? Black, Grizzly, Panda, Polar, Koala?
I think the question was too vague and the answer too specific.
Busting Bill C since September 19, 2011 10:19 CST, 8:19 PDT.

by Spider_Monkey on Jan 4, 2012 9:22 AM CST up reply actions
Great whites attack from below, not the side.
Therefore I’d imagine shallow water gives the grizzly the advantage, not the great white’s natural hunting strategy.
/toomuchsharkweek
by SEC Supremacist on Jan 4, 2012 9:23 AM CST up reply actions
the question referred to Grizzly
I think it depends on who win the initiative roll. Grizzly could swat down, stun the shark, perhaps deathblow on the natural 20. But if Shark wins, the first bite is pretty much going to hamstring the bear.

Never forget Wolf Island, or pie! #AHAMF, it's vaguely sordid.
by Spider_Monkey on Jan 4, 2012 9:43 AM CST up reply actions
yes I do
Piranha 3D wasn’t trying to be anything other than a cheesy b-roll film. It wasn’t trying to develop characters. It didn’t try to involve you in the story. It just said, “these piranha are going to kill people and the people are going to try to kill the piranah.”
Star Wars was trying to develop one of the greatest villains in cinematic history. And it came up with that garbage.
Transformers wanted me invested in Sam witwiki, it wanted to do cheese ball crap like Prime giving that ridiculous speech about humanity and being the guardians at the end. It tried to frame the fight as something more than it was. With stupid lines about how humans are alwasy starting wars, etc etc.
If you want to make a movie that is nothing but eye candy, then just make it. Don’t try to blur the line. I don’t need a 10 minute scene of autobots being clumsy and hiding from his dad. Just have them fight.
Don’t bother with the sub-plot of the secret agents tracking these people. Or, if you really feel that’s what you have to do, then tell a decent story.
Piranha 3-D had a goal and it achieved it. Those other movies did not achieve their goal.

My biggest issue with the transformer movies
is when they would try (unsuccessfully in my opinion) to inject humor with the family or whoever else. Just made it awkward and ruined whatever flow there may have been.
Big explosions were good though.
Top Heavy Beer Drinker
exactly
There was a cool thing going on. robot fights, special forces, the simple good v. evil story. But then they would cut away from that for like 15-20 minutes at a time to make me painfully aware what was happening.
And I’m not even sure who the humor was related to. A masturbation joke followed immediately by a “big robot is clumsy” joke? One is for (presumably) the older crowd, the other for the younger, but both crowds have at least one joke that falls just incredibly flat.
Also, how about you make the CGI Transformers very distinctive when they are in robot form so it is easier to figure out who is winning or losing the battle?

It's not the use of the MacGuffin
I liked the Harry Potter story and it was essentially just one MacGuffin after another. The difference being there were CHARACTERS in those stories. They developed. They grew. They learned. They changed.
Characters drive stories, Sam Witwiki is the flattest character imaginable. In no way shape or form is he different at the end of the 2nd one as he is at the start of the 1st (except for he’s been to robot heaven, I guess and now he dates Meghan Fox’s character).
The Star Wars plots weren’t exactly brand new. But the characters mattered. Luke and Han hated each other to start and they developed into friends. Chewie went from being annoyed with 3PO to sort of looking out for him.
Leia and Han grew into a relationship. Luke learned the flipping force. And Darth Vader found the good still in him.
The plot was the formula for almost every space movie (small rebels, giant imperial force, insurmountable odds, victory). But the characters mattered.
If you are implying the Dresden Files has the same type of characters as Transformers, I’m glad I didn’t take up your recommendation.
Busting Bill C since September 19, 2011 10:19 CST, 8:19 PDT.
Oh not at all.
And I totally agree about characters driving stories. If I just wanted a generic urban fantasy story, I wouldn’t be reading Dresden. I read it because Harry’s Sherlock Holmes crossed with “Gandalf on crack and an IV of Red Bull, with a big leather coat and a .44 revolver in his pocket.” And the side characters of course.
Side note:
I’ve gone back and tried to re-read Jurassic Park (first read in middle school) and I’ve found I can’t finish it due to the fact that I have no picture of Alan Grant (book). It took me forever to figure out that Chrichton just wasn’t delivering an interesting character, and that the books I’d picked up since then had headed steadily towards the more character/characterization heavy side of the spectrum. It was a neat realization when it happened.
Interesting
I haven’t read JP since middle school either. I remember bits about the book that weren’t in the movie (the T-Rex and the waterfall) but, now that I think about it, I don’t think I could describe Alan Grant in any meaningful way. I remember he survived in a desert for a while on his own, but that was just something the reader is told.

I thought the book
had him as a severe academic, and his quest to save the kids wasn’t as nearly as emotional as it was in the movie.

Maybe that's right
I just don’t remember him as a character. I know what he did, but not who he was.

Yup.
And that’s why I can’t get into the book anymore. Dresden, Honor Harrington (most Weber characters for that matter), hell, half of the Star Wars EU are more developed than Alan Grant was in the book. Maybe Malcolm or one of the other characters in JP was better, but Malcolm annoyed me and I don’t remember any of the others enough to tell (a bad sign).

I'm voting Shark and Cake.
Seeing a shark EAT a cake would be very funny. One bite, even a Costco sheet cake, and it would be gone.
Also, as proof of cake’s superiority over pie, when they want to catch a bear they bait the trap with honey glazed donuts and beer. Since we have established that donuts are in fact a derivative of cake (as tarts are to pie), this clearly shows most wildlife that matter (because they kill people) eat cake.

It drives me nuts
It’s ESPN sports-shock taken local. Nothing substantive. And more ammo for the KU and Purdue fans.
Yeah I agree mostly but
Jack keeps it local which is nice and it’s usually something about Mu being better than ku so as it goes in KC that’s nice to hear anytime.
Anybody who could be driven nuts by Jack Harry was done so long ago
Jack’s Smack is about as informative as the KC Star’s comment sections. Actually, it would be pretty fun to secretly switch his text with a comment from the Star one week and see if he (or either of his viewers) noticed.
I don’t know if we’ll win the conference again (if it was our birthright, we wouldn’t make such a big deal out of it), but saying we’re lucky to finish in the top 5 just marks him as a loon. I don’t think we’re as good as the computer rankings say, but we’d have to drop about 70 spots to fall out of the top half of the conference in either kenpom or Sagarin predictor
"by KSinDC"
I wish that would be put at the top of your comment. I was confused about “we”
Top Heavy Beer Drinker
You know, I promised before that I would start doing that, and then I promptly forgot
I will renew that vow, for what it’s worth.
And I missed Oklahoma (currently 6th in the computer rankings under both KenPom and Sagarain Predictor) in my first glance, so I overstated how far KU would have to drop to be out of the top 5 in the conference: from 6 to 55 in Sagarin Predictor, or from 6 to 69 in the KenPom rankings.

I have to say it's been fun to watch him take some heat over there for it
Although he continues to pretend like I was some kind of crazy repeat troll, which is demonstrably false. He should just man up and admit that he banned me because I was ruining the acoustics in his echo chamber.
You now what else is kinda strange
In its original form, the post-game wrap-up referred to the live thread, but it has since been edited to take out that reference.
There was really nothing embarrassing about the thread, and no reason to troll it or anything (which I hope no one did). You can imagine how frustrating it would be to watch a game like last night’s from the opposing perspective, and it was just kinda funny to see jtesooner come to grips with it over time.
I didn't see anyone trolling and the thread seemed pretty tame
I wonder if it just smarted to see it show up here.
We are DAVIDSON City!
Yeah, really odd
I wonder if someone made some sort of “let’s burn this thread and never speak of it again” reference late in the game and jtesooner obliged.

this sucks
i really love meltdown threads. It’s been boring lately as many losing teams don’t have good SBN sites with commenters.
Even if the purple kitties beat kU tonight, there are only a couple people who use RCT so that wouldn’t even be fun to read.
Anyone suggest a good meltdown they saw recently? I guess I never checked the DWAGS site…

If you like a good meltdown thread, you can head over to Clemson's page and read their live Orange Bowl thread.
Supposedly Coach Dabo said this before the game was played, “They’ll be talking about the Clemson D after this Game”.
Here’s a link to their live game thread.
It starts off okay, there are a couple of people who are a bit offended that anyone would think that WVU has a chance in this game. By midway through they are seriously worried WVU might score fifty on them. Boy, were they in for a surprise.
Here's a couple quotes from before the game started,
I want it over by half time! GO TIGERS…
We’ll crush these guys. I’m not worried at all
To decry someone for picking Clemson when they’re the obvious favorite is just them doing their job. They recognize greatness when they see it. WV is going to get their ass whipped.
I felt sorry for these guys.
they are lucky Bob Stoops wasn't coaching WVU
because he would have kept his foot on the gas and laid a bill down on them
