how many minutes did ratliffe play?

i don’t think he ever even got a chance to get started. it was kind of baffling to me, though he didnt do much when he was in.

by mufaninkc on Jan 7, 2012 2:54 PM CST reply actions

ESPN's in-game box

is notoriously inaccurate. He MIGHT have had 14 minutes, but if you check back in a hour, it might be different. Might not.

The other night when Kimmie had 9 boards, the in-game showed him with 4 as time expired. Your mileage will vary.

by Bivouac77 on Jan 7, 2012 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

He gets discouraged when he doesn't touch the ball enough

And starts dogging it on defense; stupid fouls, trying to block every shot, etc. He has to realize that you always get the shitty end of the stick on the road in league play. I question his mental toughness.

That said, the guards pretty much just stopped looking for him on offense, so I can understand his frustration, to a certain extent.

by Bivouac77 on Jan 7, 2012 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

KSU is a bitch of a matchup for him

Their guys are at least as big and lots more athletic. He doesn’t get the same kind of looks. The best we could have hoped for is for him to limit his fouls. That’s my biggest disappointment.

they are a ton more athletic than steve moore then

might as well risk the chance that ratliffe fouls out and let him play as opposed to guaranteeing that he doesn’t play much at all

So based on CBS box score...Phil pressey led us in rebounding today.

He’s 5 foot 9 with shoes on. Thats a problem.

Not only would it be an incredible season for LSU, but I really don’t like Bama and don’t think they deserved the title game.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Jan 7, 2012 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

My take on the close games we have played in this year

It seems like in the close games we play, that our guards still penetrate pretty much at will, but instead of defenders from the wings coming in to help, they stick with denmon and english, so there is no one for our guards to kick it out to. If the other team doesnt have alot of height or a good shotblocker we score or get fouled. but if they do have height or a shot blocker, like ODU or KSU then we force up a bad shot. IS this just me or does anyone else see that.

by optiger on Jan 7, 2012 2:58 PM CST reply actions

Other teams have done a lot of that.

But when the big guy comes to help, Phil has been good about finding our open big guy (See why Ratliffe has 77% field goal shooting). Today it did not happen.

by Hapgrass on Jan 7, 2012 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

The road games you just can't lose:

OU, TT, OSU. That’s three wins. ISU won’t be as easy as some people think it will be, but I think MU can handle it. That’s four road wins. Take those and win out at home, and that’s enough for a nice seed (3-5 range, depending on conference tourney outcome) in the NCAA’s. But if you want to win the 12, you have to steal probably two more on the road. The most likely suspects would be A&M and Texas.

KU: forget it.
BU: Maybe, but probably not.
KSU: duh.

6-3 on the road is still a realistic goal. And 6-3 on the road would be a hell of a season.

One of the three toughest games on the schedule, they played really well, and we didn’t shoot lights out, which is probably what it would have taken. This game would have been gravy, but in many ways the ISU game on Wednesday is a much bigger game—definitely winnable, but by no means a cakewalk.

Unfortunately, I almost hit one trifecta

Friday I said I feared we’d shoot under 40% (check: 32.7), get outrebounded by 15 (almost: 14) and at least one of Ratliffe/Moore would foul out (Steve with 5, Cardo with 4).

And no, I’m not looking for any award. :0)

Basically, I kinda expected this. Not happy with it, but this was always gonna be a tough, tough game to play well in, let alone win. To me, the key is to just regroup and win in Ames. Don’t let a (typically) bad performance at Bramlage become a general road woe.

Take what I say in a different way and it's easy to see that this is all confusion.

It seems we stray from some things that work

When Flip had more assists than points, more side to side action, being patient, not forcing bad shots, things were flying. It seems like Mizzou is playing like last year right now.

I already have my Mizzou hating co-workers talkin trash.

“Told you so, this is just a self ran Mike Anderson left over team. Falling during conference play, just like last year”
“Told you, they were over-rated”.
We are now 14-1 and still in pretty good company with a lot of up side. Getting spanked by KSU is a lot better then Davidson, so go blow goats, KSU/Iowa/ku fans!

by McZou on Jan 7, 2012 4:15 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

As people have said above, it’s because the teams we’ve struggled against are equipped to MAKE us play differently. The normal pattern is that flip or dixon penetrate, and then you pick your poison because you can’t cover all of Flip going for the layup, Denmon & Kimmy waiting for a kick out at the line, and Cardo waiting for a close in shot near the bucket. Whichever one you leave open will burn you. But if you’ve got a good enough big, he can shut down flip at the rim on his own, and then you can leave everyone else covered with passes to them cut off, and then Mizzou is out of options.

Presumably we need to find more ways to have our perimeter shooters moving at the same time as the penetration happens so that it’s harder to cut off passes to them, and we need cardo doing things that will get him open just as flip arrives at the rim… But what do I know, I’m a basketball idiot.

My takeaways from today...

This is mainly to put my thoughts in writing, and is in no way meant to make it sound like I know what I’m talking about:

1. MU, kU, and kSU have the best home court advantages in the league. Each of these teams plays especially well at home, even in seasons when they are not that good of a team. We ran into the same buzzsaw today that OU ran into last week. I still think kSU has a solid team, but I don’t expect the same result when they come to Columbia.

2. If we worked the drive-and-dish to open shooters today, I think the outcome would have been a lot different. Maybe not a win, but at least a better showing. When our guards drove, it felt like 1 of 2 things happened. Either they threw poor passes that did not hit shooters in rhythm, or the ball ended up out of bounds. Or we drove too far, and the long kSU arms blocked a shot or deflected a pass. I figured our guards had enough experience to feel this out early on, and then make adjustments. But it looked like a broken record all game.

3. Our strength is ball handling. But the majority of the time our guards were starting the offense 40+ feet from the basket, and not making the effort to drive past a taller, slower defender. No way kSU plays good enough perimeter defense on a regular basis to knock us off our game. But their interior defense is tough.

4. Frank Martin is scary. If anyone else saw him at about the 17 minute mark in the second half. He grabbed a bottle of water, sat down on the bench, and then randomly screamed “aaaaaaaah!” I will have nightmares about that for at least a month.

by MUStL on Jan 7, 2012 6:50 PM CST reply actions

I mostly agree (and don't forget ISU's home advantage)

but I think KSU deserves a lot of credit for their D, interior and perimeter today. They played very tough, and when help defense came, the ball handler could not find the open man. They collapsed and recovered to the outside shooters like a top 5 defense today. If they played offense as good as defense today they’d have blown us out by 40+.

Woodley vs. Mein (pre-game)

Mein is only 22, extensive record of 23-7 already however from Canada. Woodley is 9-0 and has actually been able to open his own gym already (good for him). Mein is more of a striker (puncher), while Woodley is more of a grappler (no kidding) and looks for submissions. Mein is a good deal taller, but the reach is the same.

Woodley vs. Mein (round 1 of 3)

Both fighters throwing jabs early with no connecting. Woodley with a body kick that scores. Woodley kick to the leg hits as well. Goes for the head kick and misses. Woodley goes in for takedown but Mein is blocking it along the fence. Woodley looking for the single-leg finish and uses some knees to score while pressed along the cage. 2 minutes through the 5 minute round.

Ref breaks the hold and re-centers them. Woodley ducks a hay-maker and then goes back in for another takedown attempt which he eventually closes with a trip. Woodley on top with 2 minutes to go. Woodley not scoring much damage right now, but is controlling the action. Mein tries to get up and out, but Woodley brings him back to the mat. Woodley scoring a little more, but is just keeping Mein close and not allowing him to get anything going. 1 minute to go

Woodley not really working any sort of submission, but scores with an elbow. Mein is flat on this back and Woodley scores again and lets him to his feet. Low kick hits the shin for Woodley. Knee from Woodley looks good. Buzzer sounds and I have to go with Woodley 10-9. Mein did very little aside from an early uppercut.

Woodley vs Mein (round 2 of 3)

Mein comes out and as he did in the first, tries to move forward and back Woodley up, which he does a bit. Big right from Woodley lands hard on Mein. Woodley going for another takedown along the cage and scores it. Woodley once again in tight to Mein along the cage, giving Mein no space to move. Woodley pounding a bit to the body. Woodley’s wife can be heard yelling, “the boys are watching”…funny stuff. 2 minutes through the round.

Woodley still on top, still landing here and there, but just controlling the fight. Mein trying to land some elbows to Woodley’s head, but Woodley just has him planted on his back. Mein is landing elbows but it does not seem to bother Woodley, and they are close to the back of Woodley’s head (potentially illegal). Woodley may need to get busy here or risk the ref standing them up because Woodley is not terribly active on top. Crowd starting to get a little restless with 1 to go in the round.

Woodley scoring some body shots and still just controlling Mein, who continues to land the elbows to the top of Woodley’s head at times. Mein is probably hurting himself a bit because the elbows wont score enough (likely) for Mein to win the round, but it is keeping the ref from standing the two fighters up, which is the only way Mein is going to get up. Woodley keeps him down to ride out the period. I would go 10-9 again for Woodley.

Woodley vs. Mein (round 3 of 3)

Woodley catches a potential knee from Mein and takes him down inside the first 20 seconds of the period. Woodley moves him on the ground over to the side of the cage, and here is where Woodley will want to keep Main for as long as possible. Mein trying to get away from the cage as Woodley continues to score some to the body while Mein still lands the occasional elbow to his head. Woodley posturing up a little bit, but comes back down and resticks himself to Mein. 2 minutes in

Woodley not really trying to finish the fight with a potential submission, and seems perfectly content to control the action. Mein has landed a pretty significant number of elbow, but none really with any sort of real velocity or danger. Ref telling him to stay busy.. Fans getting a little bored as well. Action picking up a little bit as Mein is starting to get a little desperate from the bottom. 90 seconds to go.

Ref does stand them up and Mein goes for head kick and slips. Last chance for Mein here. Woodley goes for takedown and misses it, but Woodley locks up Mein’s body while standing, landing some knees to the body. 40 seconds to go and they are pushed up against the cage. Woodley landing inside knees here and there. They both fall to the ground and get back up in unison, still locked up. The match will end with them locked. the crowd wont like it, but it should be 30-27 Woodley and not really close.

As for the judging

I can MAYBE see the 29-28 Woodley because the 2nd round had Mein landing a lot of strikes/elbows from the ground. I really cannot see the 29-28 Mein however…that is a real stretch to me.

That was some brutal lay n pray

Woodley’s gotta know that’s not gonna cut it in MMA if he actually wants to go anywhere.

Not afraid to nitpick
