I was confused.

B/c after making the David vs. Goliath play … he mentioned a number of sporting events and NONE of them were David vs. Goliath matchups. Bjorg/McEnroe … Ali/Frazier … I think Musberger may have been hitting the sauce already.

Either that or they ran out of cliches with the first matchup between these two and so they’re reaching.

Well no, but all of those guys are first ballot.

A contemporary of Ozzie Smith isn’t going to win a lot of Gold Gloves.

If you consider WAR a useful stat, he’s 61st all time, just ahead of Tony Gwynn.

by Sheriff Blalock on Jan 9, 2012 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

Larkin's and Smith's careers don't overlap that much

Ozzie’s last GG was 1992, Larkin’s rookie season was 1986. Larkin won in ’94, ’95 and ’96. He played until 2004. What happened?

by ZouDave on Jan 9, 2012 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

That's five or six he could have won potentially

Isn’t it? What would eight Gold Gloves sound like?

He won his last Gold Glove at the age of 32, which seems very normal for a shortstop.

if his measure is offense, it's not even close

by MizzouRugby on Jan 9, 2012 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

The pain was pretty astounding, though brief

I hit an uneven piece of ground while running a sprint indoors and it jammed up and popped…because I was running, I had no chance to stop running until my leg came back around and went out from under me. While falling in a heap, it apparently went back in. The entire thing may have only lasted a second or two. The subsequent dislocations lasted longer, but were not as painful as I got further and further from the original injury. I dont think I have done it in maybe 5-7 years, finally learned how to avoid it (sitting with my knees above my hips and then getting up a certain way had been the culprit)

No...not typically.

My opposite knee is worse, so if I do, it is the other way. Honestly, when it pops out, I’ve been able to get it back in and it just ends up being sore for the “trauma” for a day or two, but like I said, I am a bit away from the experience. I will say of the 5-6 times I did it after the initial injury, I was probably drinking for 2-3 of them, so that made it hurt less :-)

the elephants are all in the Superdome

serious question, though, why is Alabama’s mascot an elephant?

by jschooltiger on Jan 9, 2012 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

from the interwebs

Reason the mascot is an elephant:

In the 1930 Alabama-Ole Miss game, Coach Wallace Wade started his second string in the first quarter. They were still bigger than the Mississippi first string but Ole Miss was hanging tough. Sports writer Everett Strupper, of the Atlanta Journal, wrote “At the end of the (first) quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped this Alabama varsity.” Several other writers referred to the Alabama linemen Red Elephants and the name stuck. That is how Alabama came to be associated with elephants. Now, the Crimson Tide mascot is an elephant fittingly named Big Al.

Don’t you need LSU to be winning to make it a valid argument?

by Team on Jan 9, 2012 10:00 PM CST reply actions

No.

It doesn’t matter. Alabama had a chance to beat LSU in the regular season. At home. One of the biggest “arguments” for the BCS is that it “makes the whole season a playoff!”, except …. when it doesn’t.

If you take that “regular season is like a playoff” argument that BCS backers use, that is one of the BEST arguments that there shouldn’t be a rematch in the national title game.

Plus OSU would have scored and allowed friggin touchdowns. This is ridiculous

The Alabama-LSU game would have mattered...

…had everybody else not also lost. Alabama was very much the most deserving (statistically) of the one-loss teams, therefore they got the first second chance of the BCS era. It took a lot for it to happen, but it happened.

by Bill C. on Jan 9, 2012 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

I really shouldn't even watch this game....

I’m implicitly endorsing this pathetic excuse for a playoff with my eyeballs. yuck.

And if there were a perfect, 16-team playoff...

…it probably would have still ended with these two teams playing this exact game. :-)

by Bill C. on Jan 9, 2012 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

Not a chance (well, figuratively)

You show me the last time that the two statistically “best” teams from a sixteen team field met in the championship and I’ll believe you.

Playoffs are too unpredictable. That’s why it’s so much fun.

make it similar, I don't care.

LSU wasn’t heads and shoulders above Oregon early in the season. If they had to play Stanford AND Boise State AND Oklahoma State… odds of winning all three are very low.

I know they're not YOUR arguments, so don't be offended: they are terribly weak arguments.

If they really cared about class time they wouldn’t have FCS, DII, DIII, NAIA or any other college football playoff.

Players get injured in practices almost as often as games, regular season might be shortened (unless it’s an 8 game playoff), and in an 8 team playoff only four teams would play more than one postseason game.

Don't patronize me, this is what I think

These guys don’t get paid, it doesn’t pleasure me to see them take on any more risk than necessary. I’d also like college football to graduate more than 70% of its players.

Even if only four teams are playing, a playoff is only going to further reinforce the monetary inequities that currently exist in the game. The regular season is good enough for me as it is.

by parliamentlite on Jan 9, 2012 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

But I think Alabama is better than LSU, the fact that they missed those field goals in the first game is no good. Given a playoff I think Alabama makes it easier than LSU does.

It used to be the exception that we got a matchup for number 1 in the bowl season

Okay. LSU's O-coordinator should be fired

Every time they have run the option, there have been FOUR defenders to meet the QB and pitch man.

1. don’t call the effing option
2. put blockers in front of the ball carriers.
