Dorial Green-Beckham Commits To Missouri; Tigers Ink 18
A four-year recruitment came to an end today when Dorial Green-Beckham committed to the University of Missouri at 9:17 a.m. today at Springfield Hillcrest High School. While Missouri's transition to the SEC (and the loss of Barry Odom) has resulted in a bit of an up-and-down class overall, the star power is strong with Green-Beckham, Evan Boehm, Maty Mauk and others.
If nothing else, this sends an incredible message that Missouri can continue to bring in the type of talent they need to continue a run that has included 48 wins in five years. The transition was awkward, and there were far more de-commits than Mizzou is used to seeing, but there is plenty of reason to be excited.
We'll have more to come later, of course, and there are a few more letters of intent expected as the day progresses.
Mizzou Signees, Class of 2012 (To Date)
OL Evan Boehm (Lee's Summit, MO)
DB Torey Boozer (Everman, TX)
DL Harold Brantley (Hershey, PA)
WR/DB Levi Copelin (Broken Arrow, OK)
DB Chaston Cuffee (Cleburne, TX)
TE Sean Culkin (Largo, FL)
DB John Gibson (Missouri City, TX)
LB Markus Golden (St. Louis, MO, via Hutchinson C.C.)
WR Dorial Green-Beckham (Springfield, MO)
RB Russell Hansbrough (Arlington, TX)
DL Rickey Hatley (Atlanta, TX)
QB Maty Mauk (Kenton, OH)
LB Donavin Newsome (St. Louis, MO)
LB Michael Scherer (St. Louis, MO)
RB Morgan Steward (Kansas City, MO)
DB Ka'Ra Stewart (O'Fallon, IL)
OL Jordan Williams (Denton, TX)
DL Evan Winston (Muskegon Heights, MI)

The crazy thing is that Sean Culkin
is 6’5" 226 lbs., and looking at their frames, they don’t look a whole lot different. There’s a chance our #1 TE and #1 WR could be darn near the same size.
by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 1, 2012 12:52 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah, I'm not really sure on how Mizzou does that
I know they have X, Y, Z & H receivers. Do players keep their designation and they have different formations that move them around, or do they have different personnel groups that give the same player a different designation?
by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 1, 2012 1:42 PM CST up reply actions
Second wa is way too complicated
First one is correct. Though if I remember correctly, when Yost drew up a play for ESPN, he used 1,2,3,4. If that was just to keep the designations of x,y,z a secret or if that is how they do it, I am not certain. Remember, coaches are supremely secretive about schemes
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
That's what I was thinking
But they have to have a personnel group that subs out a true TE for a WR at the Y position if that’s where Danario played.

The thing is, he’s not a game-changer for our program. No one player ever will be. We’re stacked on offense, we have a good recruiting class (that probably won’t be ranked very high, if at all… but check back in about 3 years when the classes are re-ranked), and, most importantly, we got some good defensive players… which is what will turn out to be a game-changer for us.

Moe is legit
Even if he is more of a Wes Welker type. Lucas, however, made great strides this year, and with DGB drawing additional coverage he is in a great position to break out.
And who the hell is going to cover Eric Waters or Sean Culkin?
Lucas showed flashes of being secretly awesome last year
Having two enormous receivers who can run is going to be quite a mismatch.

This made me think of a "conversation" I had with a beaker on FB after the UT game
Original post – I just want to point out Mizzou is now 3-0 against Texas this year.
Beaker – Not very tough to do this year Scotty
Me – apparently it is pretty tough to do when your football team loses 43-0.
Beaker – Oh ok youre talking football! Shocker! Lol
Beaker – Thought you were talking basketball since its basketball season. Weird lol
Me – Well, that’s what I meant by 3-0. Sorry, I forgot Kansas doesn’t believe in fielding a competitive football team. Also, I believe Kansas only won by three on the road against Texas so apparently it is pretty tough even for the greatest basketball team in the history of basketball to pull off.
Beaker – Oh now let’s not get butt hurt here Scotty I still love ya!
Me – Just stating facts.
Beaker – You’re stating facts about a sport that isn’t playing… All I hear is how Lu fans can only talk about basketball. Youre proving my point when I say all MU fans do is being up football!!! I can throw facts bout stats too and overall mu’s football team hasn’t been shit till the early 2000’s. Stay classy MU
Me – There are so many things wrong with that last comment I don’t even know where to start. I guess I’ll start with a simple math equation. 1 football win + 2 basketball wins = 3 wins against Texas. Not sure how that means I’m only bringing up football stats.
Beaker – [silence]

And I decided to find something to watch on demand. Turned on How The States Got Their Shapes in the History channel. And while that is indeed awesome, it’s also a pretty good illustration of why the history channel is worthless as education. Yeah, my generic advice for any of these things is read quite a lot of reviews (looking at what the bulk of them say, there will always be a few outliers at either extreme – whiners and enthusiasts), then take a test drive (the longer the better, when you settle into things it feels different than when you first climb in… then don’t get too carried away with any one shiny feature (it seems all important now, but you’ll adapt pretty quick)… then take a few days away to mull on it, and then after all of that go on your gut.
You have to do all the other stuff first to educate your gut so it can make smart choices for you.

My wife and I have had great luck with Hondas
Her mom has an Odyssey with 240k miles on it and is still going strong, her dad has a CRV that’s older and still runs well, and she’s on her second Fit, the first one got her through a pretty nasty accident with only minor bumps and bruises. Plus the new CRV looks pretty cool.
by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 1, 2012 12:22 PM CST up reply actions
My wife just got a Ford Escape.
I’m not a big Ford guy, but it’s actually really nice. They get decent gas mileage, are not tanks by any means, and even the loaded ones are reasonably priced.
My wife had an Escape before the Rav.
She liked it, but we had some issues. We had an electrical problem around 15k miles and a transmission issue around 30k miles. Then she was in a pretty minor rear-end accident and the tranny had to be rebuilt because there was a design flaw that allowed coolant into the transmission fluid if really any impact happened. They may have fixed that now, I don’t know. It was 500 miles from end of warranty, so we traded and got the Rav… it just didn’t seem reliable to us.
On the other hand, my brother-in-law has had two Escapes – put 200k miles on one and just traded it in for a new one. He loves them.

Ford got some BAD transmissions from China, I think.
They have had problems with them (manual ones) in the later model Mustangs as well.

Wife purchased it without me, so I don't know the full story :)
but I do know that we’re paying $530 a month on a 60 month loan on it after an underwhelming trade-in offer on our Honda Civic Hybrid. She got bells and whistles (integrated GPS, leather seats, etc.) because the CRV was cheaper than our other options (Chevy Equinox, Acura crossover, etc). More pricy than I would like, but anything seems to be that way right now.
Thanks for the info

If an American car company would make a damn diesel

yeah, something to the effect of "I'm glad we didn't get him because I prefer a better defense"
not exactly sure how that works, but I didn’t ask
I believe in the The Black & Gold Standard
A strong offense makes your defense better
Because it forces the opposing offense out of their game plan which creates opportunities for your defense.

Well...if you score too fast, your defense doesn't get enough rest...
…so you know the Arky posters just want to conserve the energy of their defense.
To SEC, or not to SEC, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous Texas,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?
The final two on the list...

Watching ESPNU...
and on the sidebar they are scrolling through all the BCS conference schools with their in conference ranking. For every school they show the top six signees. I had to laugh when they got to Kansas (ranked #9 out of 9 in the Big 12) and they only had four. They are the only school that I’ve seen so far and I’ve seen most of them in all of the BCS conferences that ESPN couldn’t find six kids to mention.

There must be a mistake
I don’t see arky listed and their recruiting class is so good they don’t even need DGB.
I know this is make fun of Arkansas day
But there’s actually a legit reason for this. Arkansas NEVER has a top 25 recruiting class. Many of their in-state recruits don’t get evaluated by the recruiting services b/c they play at a high school in the middle of nowhere. Arkansas is the classic example of “outplay your recruiting ranking”. Nearly every class (once reevaluated) is one of the tops in the SEC.

Rocky Balboa once told me, "Nothing is real if you don't believe in who you are."
Very much like them actually.
Plus you get the never ending loop of recruiting rankings also that will NEVER favor schools like Mizzou and Arkansas. No rating service can watch every high school kid so if a kid is being recruited by the top name programs they get a higher rating. Then since those kids get a higher rating the schools that recruit them (the name programs) end up near the top of the rankings.
I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!
I realize all of what you said
but if you talk to arky fans, they are now perennial national contenders and MU is just the bottom of the barrel. As others have put it, they are like nebraska fans without the actual national championships to back it up.
I hope they play like national contenders every game

I respond to all of that with a resounding "meh"
Right now we’re hearing the worst of their fanbase at their lowest point, and on the internet where there’s no personal accountability. Imagine the “fire Yost” crowd if he had gone to Arkansas. I’ve been to Fayetteville a couple times, and found everyone I encountered to be friendly and respectful.
by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 1, 2012 1:39 PM CST up reply actions 3 recs
You may be right to an extent
on the DGB angle but I am on other message boards that have arky fans and their belief of being a clearly superior program has been restated over and over again ever since the news of us moving to the SEC.
The difference
the “fire Yost” crowd doesn’t believe that Mizzou’s sh** doesn’t stink. It doesn’t insinuate that Mizzou is inherently better than all other programs. It doesn’t automatically make allegations that the opposing school is playing dirty pool.
For better or worse, Mizzou fans project their athletic department’s failures on itself, free of an aura of superiority. For example, we hate ku, love to revel in their losses…but not one Mizzou fan would ever claim that we have a better b-ball program than kansas. When we lost Ben McLemore, the chorus wasn’t singing about Bill Self’s shadiness…most Mizzou fans I saw were saying “if he doesn’t want to be here, we don’t want him anyway”. Which is a just fine attitude to take, if you ask me.
Do I like the “fire Yost” crowd? Not at all. We do have a lot of Chicken Little fans who overreact on the micro level without examining the macro level of our programs. But I would much rather deal with them than the arrogant jackasses that most Arky fans have exposed themselves as.

This article is an oustanding read.
In general, Green-Beckham went about the process the way you’re pretty certain you would have gone about it, if you were an oversized 18-year-old who had been relentlessly schmoozed by the media and a parade of millionaire head coaches since shortly after you hit puberty instead of, you know, you. There was no sense that he felt entitled to the spotlight thrust upon him, or even that he enjoyed it; for the most part, he seemed to tolerate it, at best.

The lanes were indeed awful. Even casual bowlers knew they were awful. The few league/serious bowlers who came in would just sigh.
That said, I miss the place like crazy. It’s the one thing the new Brady Commons is missing, in my opinion. Not the bowling alley necessarily, but the place as a whole. It was a part of my campus life. Of course, I suppose everyone pretty much has that of their own. I guess I still have Ellis and Memorial Union, since I worked there too.

Looking at the current roster and realizing we are losing 3 TEs
what are the chances that Sean Culkin (TE from FL) can come in a contribute his first year? I was watching his video (I realize this can be a little misleading) but he reminds me a lot of Egnew and he definitely has some speed. I’m hoping for good things from him.
Not as tall as Ego. We will just have to see what Waters does.
But if Pinkel wanted him, then I’m sure he wil be good enough for the system. Hard to consistently replace All American talent

But I do think he’s very underrated. Good athlete who’s great at bringing down the jump ball. He’ll be a great player down the line.

There is a kid named Stephen Drain on the roster.
It looks like he is a JR that transferred from Baylor. I doubt he is on the preview from last year. I’m going to to that one to read about Waters.
New favorite from Hogville
Bookmarked:
WTh are you talking about?? sure it will. He is going to mizzou. Who do they have at WR other than DGB? NO one! They have a weak OL. they have a weak DL. They have weak Db’s and all around weak defense. They have a running qb .
DGB is going to get doubled every play. He is not going to have near the stats he would have had at arkansas because opposing teams would not have been able to put two players on him. The way it is now, he has pretty much wasted his college career by going to mizzou. They are going to be down all 3yrs he is there. He will leave early just to get out and he wont be picked as high as he would have had he chose arkansas.
So yeah, it will affect his career going to a crappy team. Oh well. He’ll figure it out after Pinkel gets fired 2yrs into the SEC for having zero wins! haha
This is why Signing Day drives me crazy.
It brings out the insecure college football fan in everyone. But as my brother pointed out, it’s kind of singular in that it’s a sport where the ENTIRE OFFSEASON happens in one day.

Single-Synapse Analysis of a Diverse Synapse Population: Proteomic Imaging Methods and Markers
A lack of methods for measuring the protein compositions of individual synapses in situ has so far hindered the exploration and exploitation of synapse molecular diversity. Here, we describe the use of array tomography, a new high-resolution proteomic imaging method, to determine the composition of glutamate and GABA synapses in somatosensory cortex of Line-H-YFP Thy-1 transgenic mice. We find that virtually all synapses are recognized by antibodies to the presynaptic phosphoprotein synapsin I, while antibodies to 16 other synaptic proteins discriminate among 4 subtypes of glutamatergic synapses and GABAergic synapses. Cell-specific YFP expression in the YFP-H mouse line allows synapses to be assigned to specific presynaptic and postsynaptic partners and reveals that a subpopulation of spines on layer 5 pyramidal cells receives both VGluT1-subtype glutamatergic and GABAergic synaptic inputs. These results establish a means for the high-throughput acquisition of proteomic data from individual cortical synapses in situ.

My guess is
With the apes in the woods, the military would have been at a tactical disadvantage and it’s not like they could get away with firebombing the forest. By the time the virus took hold, I would think they would have bigger things to deal with than a few escaped apes.

It was a small number of apes. A few dozen from the sanctuary, a few dozen from the lab, and a few dozen from the zoo. Not really that many compared to the population of San Francisco. And no, snipers wouldn’t be that useful in the forest, especially given the apes ability to go vertical with ease.

the few escaped apes wasn’t really an allusion to the numbers, just saying that they seemed to be a force to be reckoned with.

Begin scene
A darkened office, the smell of cigar smoke is heavy in the air. Venetian blinds cast shadows across the room. A man sits alone, dressed in black and gold. He as not and will not move for some time. He is waiting upon a decision. Unlike those around him, he is not nervous. He never had been. In this man’s world, there is no room for fear, no room for weakness. He is waiting, EXPECTING the young recruit in question to make the right decision. As he swirls his early morning cocktail, he hears faint cheering from across the hall. David does not react. He does not stir. He slowly reaches down, and draws a single line through a list on his desk. The recruit has come through. He is pleased. No smile crosses his face. Only the slight softening of his withering glare hints at the change of emotion.

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

Jk man. Maybe not. Ok probably in 4 weeks.

We're in the SEC now
Stop. Smell the fresh, clean air. Watch the five star receivers go jogging by. If you want, pick up and eat one of those rocks — see! It’s made of delicious chocolate!

I do not know the sunshine and happiness you speak of. I know things like this. Things like this are not sunny! They are gloomy!

I think you vastly underappreciate the talent on the team
And Arkansas is as much a football giant as South Carolina (ie. NOT ONE).

Remember, kids.
Even with a 20 year head start Arkansas has as many SEC Championships as Mizzou.

And one less Cotton Bowl win
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
well...they won it this year, right?
They’ve been in it quite a bit, I bet they’ve won more than 1.
But…they certainly don’t have a head to head over Mizzou in the Cotton Bowl.
I was implying head to head
Haha I was too lazy to look up both teams entire cotton bowl histories. Though they only had 4 bowl wins before this season…

Go every year.
DGB needs a jumper. He was deadly in the lane, but that will change in college. I think he averaged 23 ppg in those 3 games, but I bet no more than 6 of those points came away from the lane or the FT line.
But boy can he dunk, and he plays really good defense.
