Rock M Nation's Guide to Columbia (Remix)

Here we go gang. This is my version of the revised Guide to Columbia. Since the idea of revising it has been kicked around on various threads, I figured I would take this snowy Monday to put everything else off and give it a go.

Some of these opinions are mine or shared from my friends, but I did try to stay in line with the picks from the previous guide. Explanations:

The most obvious question people may have is my selection of Lot X as the best tailgating spot. As we all know, if you don’t have a parking pass, prime tailgate spots, or spots with a lot of people congregating are pretty limited. I simply selected a large lot that has RV/Bus parking for out of town fans. Lot M is also a great lot to tailgate in. But if you are from a visiting school, you would have to make some new friends quickly to get the most out of your experience.

One of my friends told me the other day...

He thought Flat Branch was overrated, and said the food was no different from Applebees. Yeah. Applebees.

Shakespeares and Booches are crap

Best brew: Flat Branch. Best munchies: The Berg. Best Italian: The Rome. Best Calzone: Gumby’s.

by SEC Supremacist on Feb 14, 2012 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

Get the hell out!

How dare you sully the good name of Shakespeares and Booches, especially Booches!

That’s it, I require satisfaction my good man. Pistols at dawn…or something close to that.

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Feb 14, 2012 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

Booches just just like Krystals/White Castle, but with less flavor

Shakespeares is more overrated than crap. I can’t justify waiting an hour and a half for something that I could get in 15 minutes at Papa Johns and it’ll be just as good if not better.

And do you really want to challenge the Alabamia to a gun fight?

by SEC Supremacist on Feb 14, 2012 3:12 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

To each their own.

I’ve just never been impressed. Maybe I hit them up on a bad day or something.

by SEC Supremacist on Feb 15, 2012 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

Those comparisons just magnify how very wrong you are sir.

Yes, I have no problem challenging an Alabamian to a gun fight, I’m part Comanchie sirra, and blood must be spilled to slacken this most offensive situation.

:)

In all seriousness, people can like what they like but in no way are Booches like White Castle, and in no way Shakespeares should ever be compared to Papa Johns.

I can see not wanting to wait for a really long time for Pizza, that’s why you don’t go to the downtown one. Head west youngman.

by BillSelfsToupee on Feb 14, 2012 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

You are right...

…Shakespeares is way overrated…and so is Booche’s. Sure it’s a nice place with decent, half a palm sized burgers…but it wasn’t anything special in my opinion. But to be fair I’ve been there once, six years ago on my 21st and it’s where we started that night…er…day and we finished at McNally’s that night. They’re not bad…just not as great as some people tend to believe.

I had only been to the old Berg once before it burnt down.

It was really different afterwards however, they have some good wings. Not CJs level but…who is really.

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Feb 14, 2012 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

They had a tenderloin sandwhich that was bigger than my head. It was glorious.

Unfortunately, all of the grease that had soaked into the place caused it to go up in flames from an electrical fire. The new place is too clean and they changed the food somehow. The tenderloin just isn’t the same.

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Feb 15, 2012 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

Gawds, how I miss the old Berg.

My best friend’s sister worked there for years so when I was in town we always started and ended our nights at the Berg. I spent a substantial number of great Saturday nights sitting at the end of the bar, nursing a Boulevard and simply enjoying time with my CoMo friends. I don’t know how many times I lit out of work on a Saturday afternoon and hightailed it to CoMo for some time at the Berg. Good times.

The new Berg is nice enough but it still doesn’t feel right and most of the old gang that I used to help hold down the end of the bar have gotten old enough to spend more time at home on the weekends than hanging out in bars.

by GreenRipper on Feb 17, 2012 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

I went to the old Berg pretty much 2 times/week in the year before it burned down

I ended up moving to KC before it re-opened.

It’s strange to go in there now, because it looks like the old one, but a Hollywood version of it. Like, I still brace myself for the dip in the floor that isn’t there anymore.

Say what?!

Uh… when exactly did the Berg burn down?! I have REALLY got to get back to campus and actually tour all that has changed.
Last time I was in town, it was a quick stop to show off the quad, the J-school, the dorm I ’RA’ed in’ and a quick drive thru campus to my wife during a cross-country trip. We had lunch with my former on-campus boss at some 50s -style diner north of town on 63(?).

Understand, when I was there, the Shack was still standing (atleast for a couple of years), and they were about to start expanding the Student Center…

I think I’m scared to see all these new changes!

you would not recognize campus or Columbia if the last time you were here the shack was still standing.

Law school, B school, student center, science buildings, crazy rec center, athletic practice facilities. Unbelievable amount of change. Basically, only GCB hasn’t changed.

last time 2006

Oh, I’ve been back since the Law School, the new Student Center, all the ‘greening of the campus’ efforts, etc. — My post was poorly written.
I was “in school” when The Shack was still in existence. (I was also part of the group that brought the Antlers back to life in mid-80s [for better or worse — hee hee] — The best thing about that was mid-court seats and personal ‘off-the-record’ pep talks/meetings w/Norm!!! Those were good times —oh, and got our picture in S.I. when they did a story on Derrick Chievous!)

Last time I was in Columbia, though, was 2006 during a cross-country trip to show my wife what a ‘real’ university looked like! (She went to Pepperdine). The visit was only a couple of hours, so I missed all the detailed changes around town. I hope this coming year, I can make it to a football game, and spend an entire weekend catching up there… (and bringing my 4yr old twins who are now diehard Mizzou Tiger fans!)

Thanks for the input

I appreciate the additional suggestions. I have no problem updating this in the near future.

Some things to consider: Not everyone has the same tastes, and this is not intended to be an exhaustive list. If that were the case, I could have just linked to midmodiningguide.com , and moved on with my day. This list is intended to outline popular places in COMO and the surrounding area.

Some other examples: CC’s does have better food than Addison’s, but as someone touched on up-thread, is more on the pricey side. So Addison’s has an advantage there. I for one have eaten at CC’s twice, and at Addison’s 15+ times, just on price alone.

And I’m sure some people think Flat Branch is overrated, but the 45 minute wait several nights of the week, and longer on Friday/Saturday would suggest that it’s a pretty popular restaurant.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Get there EARLY

10-ish years ago (and I can only assume it’s gotten MORE popular since then) if you didn’t get to McNally’s by noon on St. Patty’s Day, you were lucky to get a place to stand, nevermind sitting.

On a normal Thursday, it got so crowded, it would take 10 minutes to get near the bar from the pool tables. On St. Patty’s day, that was more like 30 minutes – if you didn’t just give up.

Drive for Fast food?

Heck, some late nights, we’d make “White Castle Runs” from the MU Campus to Stl. Of course most of the group would be drunk and passed out, so they didn’t pay attention to how long the drive actually took.

But those sliders sure were worth the trip!

Day Trips:

Hermann is a lot close and worth the drive (incidentally, taking the river route from Jeff East is a very pretty drive, and won’t add too much time). Besides all the winery’s in the town, south off 100 is Adam Puchta. It’s small, but do a full tasting. They have a pairing for everything, and the folk down there know their stuff.

I've been to Adam Puchta once.

A friend recommended it. I was puzzled to see armed security people all around. I didn’t ask any of them about it. I asked my friend latter. He said they were not there when he went. ????

Did you go in October?

Oktoberfest can be crazy! There are a lot of off duty police working security then. Town of 2500 swells to at least 10,000 with visitors on October weekends and they can get drunk and unruly. Lived there for a few years and grew up around there. Also check out Oak Glen on 100 East just outside of Hermann. Best view in Hermann, on the bluffs overlooking the river and, as of a view years ago, the only winery to also serve beer.

I LOVED Chou's Buffet on Broadway across from the cemetary

but, the parents retired and the son didn’t want to run a restaurant, so he turned it into an auto shop.

I’m still sad about that, In my last 18 months in Columbia, I didn’t find a better buffet, though there are a few non-buffet places that are pretty good.

I've been meaning to mention this all week...

…after last weekend, I can say that the best Mexican food in town is La Terraza on Nifong.

http://www.ltmexican.com/

It’s tucked away between B&B Bagel (also awesome) and Trops, and it is a bit difficult to access, but it is incredible. The menu is huge, but they pull it off, and both the “street snacks” and the Chorihongos (an appetizer that is basically chorizo-cheese-mushroom dip) are just phenomenal. Mrs. Bill C. and I do the foodie thing and get multiple meals from a place when we’re trying somewhere new — over the course of the weekend, we had the Enchiladas Mole, the tamales, the Chimichangas Texas, the Tortas Pastor and the Enchiladas los Cabos, and it was all fantastic, as was the queso.

Here's my current diet

based upon 6 small meals a day, and try to cut out as much fat and extra sugar as possible. The absolute hardest thing to do is to stop thinking about food. After my ankle injury, I was extremely sedimentary, and when I got bored, I ate. Breaking that habit of focusing on what you are going to eat next was extremely hard for me. The reason the six small meals thing has worked for me is because it never lets me get hungry, which means I don’t start craving food. My schedule is like this.

Small breakfast before morning workout- just an apple usually
After work out it is two light yogurts and some coffee
Lunch 1 is usually a sandwich, like chicken salad or ham and cheese
Lunch 2 is something light like a side salad, with chicken
Dinner is definitely harder, but I’ve found that if I make a dish before hand, like soup/white chicken chili/regular chili/spaghetti, it is easier to split it up into lots of smaller containers and either freeze or refrigerate it and then reheat one container for dinner. Sometimes I skip second dinner, which is OK, your metabolism slows down at night anyway. I try to eat only chicken and lean beef, and it has really worked for me so far.

Thanks for the info

I dont think I ever stop thinking about food. It is always on my mind, and I think it makes it even worse that I am a good cook. I’ve thought about the many small meals before and I’m gonna look into it further.

Smaller meals with more in a day/night is key

Depending on your age/sex your metabolism can react to caloric intake or starvation within a 2 hours even.

As in, if you get your metabolism going with a small breakfast and you skip your 1st lunch (or first snack) then go ahead and eat a regular lunch your body could already be in starvation mode. (ie conservation of calories, and stores them more than burns them)

It’s really interesting.

This was the big thing for me.

When I eat at a restaurant (non fast food, though cutting that out helped a lot, too), I plan on getting at least one more meal from the food. That way I have an easy lunch that week, and it keeps me from eating the whole damned plate. Most restaurants overload them anyway.

Ummmm, guys

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that the RMN Guide to Columbia needs to be “reckoned” with. There are far too many conflicting opinions in the comment sections when it gets updated. I know there are enough foodies/barflys on here that if polled could give a true assessment of the top 3 in each class. I’m not in COMO enough to give any valid opinions to these arguments. This is a good start and thanks to MUStL for his contribution. We need to make an impression on or new rivals.

Shakespeare's should be the can't miss thing to do

Not only should it be can’t miss food item (travesty that it’s not even on the alternates list), but the should be #1 on “if you do nothing else, come here” list.

I really didn’t appreciate Shakes until I left. And it’s not just a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder, because it lives up to my expectations when I come back.

I’ve had a dozen burger places as good as Booches. It’s not a question that they’re not great, but it’s like trying to rate the best Mac N Cheese. Sure, you can make it with way better ingredients and get gourmet, but ultimately it’s got a ceiling to how good it can be. And Booches isn’t nearly creative enough to completely redefine a burger.

Shakespeare’s on the other hand is among the 3 or 4 best pizza places I’ve seen anywhere in the country, and that’s including some pretty famous joints. I put a lot of stock in doing something original and uniqe, because I can get Cheese on a good crust a lot of places. Shakes has a nice atmosphere and I love the pink napkins, but ultimately this is about the pizza. The whole wheat crust, pepper and the best pepperoni I’ve ever had make Shakespeare’s an experience that I haven’t been able to replicate anywhere else.

What’s funny is, is doesn’t seem like it should be that hard. I keep waiting for a pizza joint to be as good, but they never are.

As I’ve said many times here, Shakespeares uses by far the best ingredients in town. It’s an odd “college town” place in that it is not very cheap — our typical order is a large Pizza Lover’s Passion … which runs a cool $25 or so — but man oh man is it high-quality…
